ABC has opted not to renew for a second season The Company You Keep, its new drama series starring and executive produced by Milo Ventimiglia.
The Company You Keep, produced by Disney TV Studios’ 20th Television, did not perform as well as ABC’s two other midseason 2023 entries, fellow drama Will Trent, which has been renewed for a second season, and comedy Not Dead Yet, which is looking good for a renewal.
Still, Disney has longstanding relationship with Ventimiglia, who segued to The Company You Keep following his six-season starring turn on 20th Television’s hit NBC drama This Is Us. Based on that and the fact that The Company You Keep only premiered in midseason, there was talk that ABC may give the series a partial second season order to give it more time to find an audience.

With ABC’s “The Good Doctor,” which is now rounding out its sixth season, Gratitude Productions’ Lindsay Goffman was one of the first executive producers to turn to Korean formats for English adaptation, well ahead of the explosive interest that followed with series like “Squid Game,” “Pachinko” and “Extraordinary Attorney Woo.” Now, the prolific producer is setting her sights on optioning a Korean novel for a new show, the first such deal in the industry.
“I feel like there is a real want and hunger for K-dramas,” Goffman told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View. “People are seeing they work.” AI, she added, could ease the burden of translation.
Goffman, who launched her independent banner in 2018 and has developed projects across Apple, FX, Amazon, Justin Lin’s Perfect Storm, Universal Television and more, opened up to TheWrap about her approach to acquiring IP that is “quality” but often “overlooked,...

If you thought Milo Ventimiglia was charming as a Ptsd-ridden dad with an alcohol problem on “This Is Us,” wait ’til you get a look at him on ABC’s “The Company You Keep.” He stars in the new drama as Charlie Nicoletti, a con man with a heart of gold, a guy born into a family of criminals who engineer elaborate heists to steal from the uber rich. The Nicolettis are the kinds of thieves for which you can easily fall, which is exactly what happens when Emma Hill (Catherine Haena Kim) crosses paths with Charlie. They both jokingly tell the truth about their professions. He’s a criminal, she’s CIA, but haha, just kidding, he runs a bar and she works for a logistics company. Their chemistry is immediate, and they quickly whisk each other away for a weekend of hotel room shenanigans. Neither knows the truth about the other,...

After six seasons, Milo Ventimiglia — a star who began his career as Stars Hollow’s resident hellion on “Gilmore Girls” — is freed up from playing the benevolent patriarch on “This Is Us.” And, at least in theory, his new series brings together the two halves of his TV career. On ABC’s “The Company You Keep,” based on the Korean series “My Fellow Citizens,” Ventimiglia plays a con artist, but one who’s utterly committed to his parents (William Fichtner and Polly Draper) and adult sister (Sarah Wayne Callies). The conflict between obligations to loved ones and the desire to get out of the game creates tension and interest in the show’s first two episodes, as does genuine chemistry with co-star Catherine Haena Kim.
It’s less a critique than a simple description of the network-drama form to note that the relationship between the two leads is a tidy double game.

There's been a dearth of sexy shows on television. That shouldn't be conflated with the number of skin-baring scenes that any given series might sprinkle into their narrative — but a genuinely sexy show, consisting of a fun, engaging dynamic between the romantic leads, believable chemistry, and all the plot obstacles that contribute to making the potential of their new relationship that much thornier. Enter ABC's new heist drama The Company You Keep, based on the K-drama My Fellow Citizens and developed by Julia Cohen and Phil Klemmer, which feels blended from equal parts Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Leverage and served up smooth for what might be one of the most surprising network TV contributions of 2023 so far.

ABC said Monday that it has picked up The Company You Keep, starring and executive produced by This Is Us alum Milo Ventimiglia, to series. The drama, produced by 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios, was the last remaining “second cycle” pilot to learn its fate, but was a consistent frontrunner and a move to a series pickup always looked promising.
Like drama pilot Will Trent, which was picked up to series this month, The Company You Keep had started a writers room in anticipation of a series order. The project also had brought on seasoned writer-producer Phil Klemmer as co-showrunner. It will debut at midseason on ABC in 2023.

With the conclusion of This Is Us in sight, the cast is moving on to new projects.
Chris Sullivan, who has been a part of the NBC juggernaut since the beginning, has been tapped as the lead of ABC's new comedy pilot, The Son in Law.
Deadline first reported the news, revealing that Sullivan will play Jake, a salt-of-the-earth man who finds himself seeking the approval of his new "fiancée Asha’s sophisticated parents, even as he is a difficult-to-impress father-in-law to his daughter’s longtime boyfriend."
"Sullivan’s Jake, divorced, with one 21-year-old daughter, never thought he would love again, until Asha came along," Deadline adds of the show.
"The problem is that Jake, a hard-working plumbing contractor, is solidly middle class, while Asha hails from the equivalent of uber-wealthy South Asian royalty."
