Story rights acquisition were announced by Amblin in 2019. Filming began in 2020. Released announcements were made for the film's release to be March 11, 2022, then September 16, 2022, then January 27, 2023, January 19, 2024,. Released in Vietnam on July 12, 2024 by CJ Entertainment - the only release and public showing of the film. No release of DVD, Blu-Ray or online/digital VOD has occurred. At this point (Jan. 2025) there is no way to watch Distant in the US.
The artifical intelligence names were Leonard and Amii. Both of these first names coincidentally are the names of Leonard Hoffstater (Johnny Galecki) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Miyam Bialick) from the sitcom Big Bang Theory.
