Disturbing lack of big irons

I was hoping this movie would be about an Arizona Ranger riding into the town of Agua Fría to engage in a gunfight with an outlaw whose kills numbered one and nineteen more.

Considering the budget, this seemed to really stretch every dollar. An overall great film.

The photography was wonderful. The scoring actually pleasently surprised me at times.

The acting was up and down. I felt a few actors did really well while others not so much.

If the budget was doubled, I'd invest in higher quality sound equipment for less reliability on ADR. Sometimes it's very noticable when lip reading dialogue doesn't match up.

Also more atmosphere would help, especially in the woods. The sfx can be costly, but it would really help the picture.

Was worth the watch. Have no clue why some of these people feel the need to give this 1 star and be nasty. This really was a good film!

Umm the review below is inaccurate this movie had nothing to do with the plight of buffalo soldiers. This movie was about a black man being hunted in mississippi for standing his ground; which historically happened many times.

Amazing True Story
larryjudkins12 March 2021
Great Cast and a very good movie. Filmed in Mississippi where actual events happened. Don't miss this little bit of history of 1940 about a man they called Texas Red. Very good acting by the Cast.

Don't be put off by the low budget, if you just need 'a watch. I thought it was ok.

Warning: Spoilers
THIS IS NOT A WESTERN, AND DOESNT PRETEND TO BE SO STOP COMMENTING THAT IT ISN'T A WESTERN! WE KNOW!!

Seriously, there's references to WW2 in this movie so stop your whining and appreciate there's some people on planet Earth who still live and who were around when this movie is set.

That aside, I'm normally quite brutal with low budget films (especially the seriously hard-core 'no-budget-whatsoever) English and Scottish movies that now pollute the movie-buffs outskirts.....

That said, I actually sat through this short film without a break and enjoyed it. It's about as predictable as they come - the actors were ALL unknown to me (as an ignorant Britisher) and 60 seconds into the film you KNEW exactly what was going to happen to everyone involved.

Poor Red.

I stuck with it and it was pretty good as far as LB movies go - it gave a good representation of the era, the actors and actresses were all fairly competent given what they had to work with and it most certainly did not look like a totally amateur iPhone movie. Some people might say 'did you really need to watch the film to know what was going to happen?'

Well yeah. Only thing I've noticed with low budget movies like this, and this IS a criticism - GIVE THE MAIN CHARACTERS A BACKSTORY! In this film there was absolutely none whatsoever. Not even a belch on anyone. Not even the main protagonists.

Other than that, I'd watch it again in the future. Its certainly not Roots or Mudbound, but I wish genuine success to the writers, directors, actors, and all involved. As I say I'm very unforgiving but this gets a thumbs up from me.

6/10.

Deep South Western
WalterOtsego5 February 2021
It's interesting to me how broad the Western genre can be. In this case the film is based on the true story of Texas Red. Even though it takes place around 1940 in the Deep South, it still feels like a Posse Western, and still challenges our views of civil rights. This is well shot and directed. Several actors like Burnside, Johnson, and Hall give believable, emotional performances.

Masterful Storytelling
jpmills-3566628 February 2021
Sometimes, a film that reminds you of other films, makes it just another copy of those originals. But, then, sometimes, a film that reminds you of the greatness of other films, makes it an original great of its own. Texas Red is the latter and had me thinking of films like Braveheart, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Cowardly Robert Ford. This is not to say that Texas Red is not unique. Texas Red, even in the beginnings of the opening scenes, with clips of African Americans dancing and singing freely, draws you in to the story laid before you. The music, the introducing of characters, setting ,history, the culture, instantly has you hooked. I could write a paper on this film, but you only came for a review. The story, people, cinematography of Texas Red are all compelling and well communicated. Texas Red is a masterpiece of storytelling, using elements of the old outlaw from beloved westerns (a gunfight between law and the "outlaws" occurs, but the line between the two is almost reversed and very blurred) to elements of the legend and myth (Texas Red, himself, has moments of William Wallace, becoming a legend as word spreads and truths are stretched, both for good and bad). The acting from such a diverse cast and collection of characters, never came off weak. What a feat for ALL who worked on this film. From Cedric Burnside, who played Texas Red, and had never acted before, his somewhat guardian angel wife (Anquanizia Hall), Oklahoma Kid (Herman J.R. Johnson) to the law (a range of actors here), the "bad guys", and the tracker who has some kind of morals, non were forgettable, all felt fleshed out and very real. To make an already long review short, believe me, when I say, you have not seen a film or a story like this before and you will be sorely missing out if you do not give it a watch. You will leave it having been told a compelling, moving, even uncomfortable and convicting story, not because the filmmaker forces these emotions on you as many films try to do these days, but simply because they tell the story well and you can't help but feel in response to this glimpse into history, culture, and man.

Cedric Burnside!!
nick-murphy-449769 February 2021
Let me repeat, CEDRIC BURNSIDE! I enjoyed working on this film tremendously. I was surrounded by excellent actors, crew, horsemen.... somehow Travis Mills attracts magic. Texas Red is based on true events in the winter of 1940, Franklin county Mississippi. Another part of the 12 Westerns in 12 Months project, this film is a testament to what a motivated director and talented actors can do with a shoestring budget and less than 30 days of filming. I am very proud of this film...my fellow actors, and the film community that came together to make it all happen!

Yup to me a 10

So I'm looking for " westerns " my wife was in the mood for some. Ok is it one not really but who cares !!!!Damn from the opening of the juke joint your interested. This movie is excellent in all its raw tones of 1930s and 40s race relations, the Blues of the mississippi as a musical back drop along with great acting and dialog and man Cedric as Red is a great choice. This is a piece of relatively unknown history a you'll never forget it believe me . It really makes me want to check out the other 11 westerns for 12 months. Was it a western not in the traditional sense but in the posse , horses and guns sure but like I said who cares.

Powerful! Folklore, legend, truth, ?justice?..."You gotta know when to run"
rfms-3702610 February 2021
We watched Texas Red play the cards dealt him. So many players were in that game; maybe only Coochie wore a poker face, but Dolly's tears will remind you of what it can cost to love someone. The Oklahoma Kid was his friend to the end, but he couldn't stop Red's fate. Was Red the victim of the hand dealt him? Did he stand or take a card? We'll never know, as the truth and the lore are as a scrambled egg, never to be separated.

Dragging your feet to ratify the 13th Amendment until 2013...yes...not a typo ladies & gents everything's connected + perpetuating obsolete hate during filming in 2020. Tsk tsk! We've moved past obsolete thinking, it's past time to climb aboard the fast rolling wave of change humanity is creating towards our coexistent, peaceful FUTURE of HUMANITY MISSISSIPPI! Unpleasant histories are difficult to relive. Travis Mills and the entire cast take the viewers back to one of these unpleasant histories, and they presented the story honestly.

Travis Mills Proves That Imagination Can Make Up For Budget
cwjohnsonjr25 August 2021
Far too often low budget films suffer from a lack of imagination and feel like tutorials in camera placement. Travis Mills proves that imagination can substitute for a large Hollywood budget. His storytelling keeps the viewer engaged. One cleaver scene features a statue. As our protagonist is sneaking into the woods, the camera lingers on the statue although it is watching him, and then pans over to reveal the police investigating the sighting of Texas Red.
