“Khakee: The Bengal Chapter Leaves Bihar Far Behind” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Neeraj Pandey’s Khakee: The Bengal Chapter would have been the perfect crime thriller were it not for a couple of incongruous performance which impede the other-wise pitch-perfect crime thriller, arguably the best we have seen in ages. Khakee: The Bengal Chapter boasts of razor-sharp writing and unexpected twists and turns all through.

A coiling-recoiling raga of rage plays itself out in the combustive length and breadth of the lengthy parable on crime and violence in the ‘City Of Bhoy (fear)’, as a character describes the crime situation in Kolkata.

The series kickstarts in a stunning swirl of bloodshed and deceit when an honest cop, Saptarishi (Parambrata Chatterjee), is slayed by the goons of a gangster, Bagha (played by tonally attuned Saswat Chatterjee). The ensuing bedlam in the City keeps up the cops all night, as we, too, sleepless until the lengthy but never dull episodes are done.

Embracing the...

“Amazon’s Bandish Bandits Season 2 Keeps The Gharana On Its Toes” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
There is an abundance of activity in the second season of the well-regarded Bandish Bandits. Director Anand Pandit and screenwriter Amritpal Singh Bindra dive into the debate on shastriya versus modern sangeet with just this much of a penetrative gaze as to ensure that the viewers’ interests remain unflagging.

The series not keen on exploring the debate on classicism and modernity at length. What Bandish Bandits wants to do, and does with much charm and some sensitivity, is to tell a sturdy attention-holding story.

When we meet Radhe Rathod this season, he is at the crossroads. The Gharana no longer commands the respect it once used, though luckily the series still does.

The crumbling climate of the classical legacy propels Radhe’s journey away from home in Season 2. It is a tumultuous journey in search of a befitting climax to the show.

On the other side, the contemporary singer Tamanna Sharma...

Image
In Bandish Bandits season 2 we see the marriage of old and new, traditional and contemporary, and how they can harmonize together. The series takes off with the death of Pandit Radhemohan, the original “Sangeet Samraat.” His successor is his grandson Radhe, who must now take on the responsibility of keeping the “Rathod Gharana” alive. While initially, Radhe has many plans, like participating in Jodhpur’s annual music competition to remain the “Sangeet Samrat,” the family ends up in murky waters when a book is published tarnishing Panditji’s legacy and the future of the “Gharana.” It’s up to Radhe and his family now to keep the music alive while also understanding how to develop it in a way that will appeal to the new generation of listeners. Rohit Shetty filled in for Salman Khan in Bigg Boss 18 Weekend Ka Vaar episode this week, and oh, what an episode! While Ekta made sure that she proved Sara Arfeen Khan’s gameplay to instigate Avinash, hitting him along with Eisha Singh and Alice Kaushik in the most pathetic and derogatory way, Rohit Shetty took the matter into his own hands and suggesting that the the two girls owe an apology on the National Television.

The Great Indian Kapil Show S2 Ep 8 Review Ft. Deepinder Goyal, Sudha Murthy & Narayan Murthy (Photo Credit – Instagram )

The eighth episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show welcomed two huge entrepreneur couples – Narayan Murthy and Sudha Murthy & Deepinder Goyal and Gia Goyal. While the show offered little humor and some giggles, it however, was another failed attempt to entertain!

In fact, the show fell flat brutally when Krushna Abhishek and Kiku Sharda arrived with their spoofy characters of Kim Kong and Donald Trump. Now, while this was a fresh attempt in the beginning, it has become monotonous, with the sketch offering nothing!

It was followed by Sunil Grover’s Dafli act, which added nothing worth watching for the first time. It seemed to be an act without a script, probably, or a weak script, probably. But the entire show shattered apart barring 10 minutes when Sudha Murthy took the reign in her hands.

“Bad Newz Is Buoyant, Bubbly, Bouncy & Fun While It Lasts” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Katrina Kaif makes a guest appearance in this crazily evanescent comedy. But don’t get excited. She is just a poster on the wall, and a dial-a-direct-reference gimmick for Vicky Kaushal who is clearly the star attraction here. Again, don’t get excited, unless you relish the thought of Kaushal doing a Govinda on speed.

Directed by Anand Tiwari (who in the past has done the well-received series Bandish Bandits) the ‘romp’-com has those joyful Karan Johar vibes stamped in every frame. It is idyllic to the eye and serves as fast food, ingested off paper plates, digestible for those who are into sprightly storytelling about badly behaved people who have never been told the difference being demanding and annoying.

So we have Saloni Bagga making the best of her role as a chef who vents her frustrations on her husband Akhil Chaddha (Vicky Kaushal) when things don’t...

‘Shehar Lakhot’ Review: A Compelling Neo-Noir That Explores The Stories Of Small-Town Rajasthan
Image
Lately, there have been many television shows that are set in the heartland of Rajasthan. After thoroughly exploring stories from the Hindi heartland, a lot of filmmakers have shifted their gaze towards Rajasthan that focus on the kind of illegal activities that are being carried out. Since the state shares a border with a powerful pesky neighboring country, in and out of contraband is bound to happen. Manorama Six Feet Under, Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo, Aarya, Dahaad, Gulaal, and Thar are crime dramas that explore the dark underbelly of the state. Meanwhile, Bandish Bandits and Mismatched showcase the vibrant and colorful side of Rajasthan, which the people are used to seeing. Shehar Lakhot is yet another addition to the neo-noir crime drama genre that explores the marble mafia in the state of Rajasthan and the politics that looms around it. Created by Navdeep Singh and Devika Bhagat, the show is a Prime Video Original,...

‘Dahaad’ (2023) Review: An Underwhelming Serial Killer Story With Social Commentary Not Living Up To Its Mark
Image
The recent trend in the Hindi film industry seems to be bringing out stories from gritty and arid Rajasthan. It looks like stories from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, and Bihar regions that focused on gangsters and the mafia are on their way out. We saw the colorful and vivacious Bandish Bandits from a few years ago. We had Thar last year; this year we already have Saas, Bahu aur Flamingo. Two out of the three films were based in the desert-covered state and were about the sort of nefarious activities that take place there, and with the state bordering the infamous neighboring country, there’s a wide selection to choose from that not many films have covered in the past. The dry aspect of the weather adds a layer to the stories, but overusing geography to talk about what exactly is happening in the state is what will lead to nothing narrative wise.

The series features 30 to 50-minute episodes, which clocks in at about 7-ish hours – I was all in for it and in fact, I would have watched even more.

The director crafted the series so well.
