From a 70s trekkie...
no_spirite28 October 2021
... it got me. Thought I would hate this and watched out of pure curiosity (I really wanted to hate this) and after watching the first episode, I now can't wait for the next. Love the plot, characters are good, even got me jigging about on the final "death star" sequence when the phasers kicked in. Good showing guys. Worth a go. Don't get the initial bad ratings. People just don't have enough joy in there hearts nowadays.

Great stories, adventures, Sci-fi, exploration. This is Star Trek.
PaxD7529 November 2022
This review is for the first 10 episodes of season 1 only:

Pleasantly surprised at how good this turned out to be.

I thought the show was trying to appeal to both kids and adults through their choices of characters. The writing style and story-line worked well enough that I found that they succeeded in connecting me with the younger characters in a mostly nostalgic way.

I really liked that it was the older characters, however, that drove the core of each episode. It helped maintain the seriousness of the evolving story.

I'll admit that I have a preference for serious storytelling. The plot for this series definitely leans toward a more adult mindset within a coming of age framework.

The serious overtones, good Sci-fi elements and the way the story is organically growing made a huge difference for me. I'm very happy with the way this series started because Star Trek can be 'hit or miss'. This one hits the bullseye.

I also love the addition of Hologram (Captain) Janeway. Everyone has their favorite captain. Janeway happens to be my favorite post-TOS captain and Kate Mulgrew has delivered on the role once again.

After a few episodes it's GOOD!
tom9921 February 2022
I see some comparing it to star wars... They probably haven't seen a single episode. After episode 3 I was hooked, it's star trek all the way. It's more star trek then any other recent live action series. Having Janeway there and having so many other star trek cameo's makes it awesome to watch. It's also fast paced and some Great adventures. And yes it's made for kids but its enjoyable for adults too! Give it a go! Also why does it have as 6.7 rating while the episodes all have an average of 8/10???

An entertaining quality made show even if directed more towards a younger viewer
RainerJohns29 October 2021
Though it is difficult to judge with one episode out. But I love the essential "exploring with a ship" foundation and looking forward to what happens. The characters seem interesting and the animation very nice. The storyline so far seems pretty basic but we'll see.

Despite it might seem it will be more of a kids show it still has many elements that are enjoyable for any ST fan. Give it a chance!

Kids will love it.
neil_schaler30 October 2021
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the shows animation and story, especially with all the bad reviews that came out even before the show did.

As much as I enjoyed the Original Star Trek animated show as a kid do I think this generation will enjoy this show.

It is Trek, viewers saying its mindless dont get it
chrismholmez19 November 2021
This will get new Trek fans in earlier. This is the Delta quadrant and there are many episodes to link the Trek ethos from the Delta quadrant. The visuals are outstanding, the stories are wonderful for kids and enjoyable for adults to watch with them. It is perfect. If I had a particular nitpick I dont love Dal, seems a bit useless and whiny right now... but its literally 3 episodes in.

Enjoy it for what it is.

I am kinda hooked
kk-yanakiev3 November 2021
Watched the pilot episode. I am not really sold on the main protagonist cockiness and the constant jokes, breaking every possible moment, but what got me is the bond between the misfits cast. I felt like I am watching a story. I really hope they do make something with that story, that it goes somewhere by the end of the season. That the characters evolve, create relationships. And have an ending...actual ending. I don't find "smart", endings like Nolan's spinning top, still casing arguments. That ain't clever, that is "I don't know what to say", so let me leave this cliffhanger.

The best star trek since the 90s
jonathanmarklund29 December 2022
This show is not perfect.

But it is really good.

Lower your expectations and just enjoy it for what it is. It's a nickelodeon show about the star trek universe with 6 completely new members and a brand new ship.

It doesn't follow the normal star trek set-up, it's obviously made with children in mind, so don't expect anything to deep, or too dark.

And in this lies the charm. It just feels like good old charming star trek. There is enough here for old fans, and enough here for new fans.

And I promise you, the characters will grow on you. What felt a little bit awkward and stiff in the beginning soon melts away and you'll come to love this crew just as much as previous crews.

I really hope we get more seasons of this. Because this is the best star trek since the 90s.

Way better than I was expecting
Mcduff360128 August 2023
I wasn't really interested in this title in the Star Trek catalogue. It looked childish and not for me. But I forced myself to watch it so I could say I 100% the catalogue. Glad I didn't skip it.

Yes it is targeted to older kids but it is still really enjoyable to watch and quiet frankly after slogging through Discovery and Picard I needed some reasonably decent Trek.

This follows a ragtag bunch of characters that find themselves on a lost Federation ship. A familiar character from a previous Star Trek is there to help the crew along their journey.

This is only two seasons and they seemed to have known it was ending so there is an actual ending which closes out the show in a satisfying way. Would recommend to any Trek fan or olders kids into sci fi.

To boldly go where and so forth
Rastifan4 November 2021
The show is a little tame for older Trekkies like myself. It is "very" family friendly. But the younger audience which this is aimed at might find it worth while. Let's hope future episodes justify it's existence.

Finding it's Trek legs finally
syncopatedrhythm28 January 2022
Laughing at all the early reviews that complain that it's not Trek. It seemed far off for the first few episodes to set it up, but then we get the Kobyashi Maru, Time distortions, Ferengis, now finally uniforms, and Trek like moral decisions. So Trek like now that maybe the other current series writers should take note. Holo Janeway is amazing, but Kate Mulgrew is an awesome actor. If you got turned off by the first few episodes you should give it a second chance. Hey we still get to look forward to Chokatay making an appearance in the second half of the season, after all it is his ship.

Fun and emersive - love it!
sboslayer22 November 2021
It's just so much fun and has Janeway to boot. I think younger audiences will love this series. It's a great introduction to trek with stellar graphics. I actually think other than Picard it's the best so far. Lower Decks is also awesome, but all these shows are in their own lane. Disco is good, but I'm its way more fun watching Prodigy. There might not be too many trek references yet, but that's the idea... introduce to the next gen of people.

Not sure it deserves all the bad reviews. Personally, it always seems to be the hard-core TNG (or pre) fans that want the same format. Always complaining for the same, gets boring. At least this is a different spin and take it for what it is. I'd not write it off until you watch thr first 5 eps as let's face it most 1st seasons are about getting the audience on board and building the foundation. Giving tons of trek lore will make it hard to follow.

Strange New Murfs...
owen-watts1 January 2023
I wasn't immediately convinced with Prodigy smashed onto our screens in late 2021 and feeling like a tonal mash between Clone Wars and Trollhunters. It was felt a bit bombastic and heavy-handed, but honestly it really began to grow on me and by the time of the wildly canonical "Kobayashi Maru" episode I was fully on board. With some beautiful backgrounds, dynamic set pieces, respectful references and a strong focus on character Prodigy ends up as one of the strongest entries in the recent Trek canon and easily my favourite set in the post-Voyager era. Hopefully it will do what it was built to do and give whole new generations of Trekkies a strong grounding on which to boldly go.

Surprisingly good
mattdsnider14 January 2022
It's not that I expected Prodigy to be bad, I just had no real expectations. It was specifically marketed as a way to get a younger audience interested in Star Trek and I can see how it would. But it's honestly better written than some of its recent live-action peers. It strikes a nice balance between the chock-full of callbacks nature of Lower Decks and covering new ground that still seems recognizably situated in the same universe.

"Together, your potential is infinite. Now, go boldly."
gettodamoofies3 June 2023
SEASON: 7/10.

Star Trek: Prodigy burst onto the scene in 2021, marking a fresh and exciting addition to the beloved Star Trek franchise. The first season of this animated series may have a weaker start, but it quickly finds its footing, solidifying its unique feel before progressing to a strong and satisfying finale that truly embodies the essence of "true" Star Trek.

One of the standout aspects of Star Trek: Prodigy is its strong voice acting. The cast brings their A-game, immersing viewers in a diverse array of compelling characters. Each voice actor delivers their lines with conviction, effectively conveying emotions and nuances that add depth to their respective roles. It's a testament to their talent that the characters feel so real and relatable, drawing viewers of all ages into the story.

While Prodigy primarily caters to children and teens, it still manages to offer value for adult viewers. The series strikes a balance between entertaining its younger audience with action-packed adventures and incorporating themes that resonate with older fans. It tackles important topics such as friendship, teamwork, acceptance, and the pursuit of freedom and justice. This multi-generational appeal is a testament to the show's ability to bridge the gap between various age groups.

One of the highlights of Star Trek: Prodigy is the inclusion of the iconic Kate Mulgrew as Janeway. Her return to the Star Trek universe is a delightful treat for longtime fans. Mulgrew brings her signature gravitas and charm to the character, injecting the series with a sense of familiarity and nostalgia. Janeway's mentorship of the young crew members provides a strong moral compass for the show, guiding them through their adventures while imparting valuable life lessons.

Although the series starts with a few bumps, it quickly finds its stride, culminating in a gripping and emotionally resonant finale. The later episodes embrace the true essence of Star Trek, exploring ethical dilemmas and societal issues in thought-provoking ways. The finale serves as a culmination of the character arcs and storylines, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating what's to come in future seasons.

Overall, Star Trek: Prodigy's first season is a joyous addition to the Star Trek universe. With strong voice acting, a multi-generational appeal, the inclusion of Kate Mulgrew as Janeway, and a progression from a weaker start to a compelling finale, the series demonstrates its commitment to delivering quality storytelling. It's a must-watch for the young and more than passable entertainment for the old, promising an exciting future for this new chapter in the Star Trek saga.

9yo boy & mom both love it
anabel-neri16 October 2022
Hey y'all. My 9yo son and I have watched Prodigy since it came out, and we've both enjoyed it immensely. There are times when the references go over his head but I catch them, and there are times that he spots them (to my surprise).

I love the way they've built the core themes of Star Trek right into the material, giving kids some basic background before ever making it to Federation space, but it doesn't feel overdone. Like, when you read a book series and the first chapter of every subsequent book is a rehash of the previous book? Or the way Doctor Who rehashes who the Doctor is every time there's a new companion? Prodigy does it with a gentle touch, and even when it's happening, they manage to make it fun to watch anyway. Murf trying to eat a holographic star while Janeway is monologging? Adorable and brilliantly placed. The bit about Klingons just slipped in on that one planet? That was a very slick maneuver.

It does have some of the style and pacing as the Clone Wars, but I would disagree with folks who think they're trying to make Star Trek like Star Wars. It's a whole different universe, and while the characters are often dealing with ethical issues, it's not light vs dark, and it's *really* not not as gritty and as in-the-trenches feeling as Clone Wars (or Picard).

If you're thinking of trying Prodigy, do, and bring kids along for the ride. Age-wise, my son was 8 when we started watching it last year, and while it gets intense sometimes, it's all been fine. That's a contrast with Strange New Worlds, because the Gorn episodes got too intense for him. He can also handle most episodes of OS, TNG, Voy, and some DS9, and he really enjoyed the first movie in the Kelvin universe. In the Star Wars universe, he can handle most of it, but backs out of Ep. III, Rogue One, and the Mandalorian (we haven't watched Boba Fett or Obi-Wan yet). :)

Thanks!

Not sure it deserves the bad reviews
Killerb4430 October 2021
While I get that it doesn't have a true Star Trek storyline, I like the fresh take. I have a feeling the crew will continue to grow and who knows who or what they will encounter from the Star Trek universe. The animation and voice acting are top notch and it has an element of action that I feel sometimes Star Trek lacks. I am on board to see where this takes us.

Good Start For a Kids Program
chuppacabbra7130 October 2021
So I have read the reviews both negative and positive and I have to say that some have merit while others do not. Let us remember that this is considered children's programming and is not intended to be HIGH BROW like Picard or the fun science lingo of Generations and Discovery. Plus EVERY pilot episode is designed to introduced the characters and I would love to see how their story develops. Will they become more complex to satisfy adult viewership or will they keep these kids continuously fascinated by what is out in the cosmos like all children that look up to the stars each night. Time will tell. Now as for the animation, wow! I can't believe there is some much movie quality animation in this episode. Some scenes were brighter than others but over all it does go way beyond most others. Lots of fine details in the background, foreground, and effects. Now I enjoyed this and my wife (not a Star Trek Fan) really liked it but our most discerning critic in our household is our six old son who said,"Is that it? Where are they going? I want to see more!" After all what is Star Trek at it's core but an adventure to inspire the future...

oh my gosh, I love star wars
marc_to28 October 2021
This is by far the best new episode of the clone wars I have seen to date. Those crazy battle droids are just up to their usually hijinks and I gotta say General Grievous is looking pretty intimidating in that black cloak. I'm always impressed by the accuracy of droids in this universe, 100 shots at stationary targets in the open, and not a single hit. Those crazy droids just can't catch a break.

Again, best new Star wars show on tv. Oh, wait... I've just been informed... this is a Star trek show? Hum...

Episode one : Feels like a clone war episode with a star trek brand pasted over it.

Next Episode : stand by for some star trek!

YA Star Trek? Yes, it works
suncountee28 November 2021
I initially wasn't sold on the premise of this show. It starts on an alien mining planet where almost no one has heard of the Federation, and not a uniform in sight until Hologram Janeway shows up. But watch the first 5 episodes, trust me. The kids start out rough and unsure how to work as a team, but Janeway shows them the ropes of Starfleet and they slowly become a crew who set a course for the Alpha Quadrant. We are on a journey with these kids... and I'm looking forward to it.

Good for your kids if they love Star Wars
redn_path0129 October 2021
... and if your kids have never heard of Star Trek.

The visual and technical production quality is excellent for a TV show, really nice.

It does not have anything going for adults though, and I'm truly wondering why it is called Star Trek, when every single bit in it is literally Star Wars-like. From the villain tropes right down to the sound effects and aliens.

The inclusion of Janeway in the whole mix feels like an arbitrary last minute decision to justify wedging this into the Star Trek 'Franchise' (apologies for having to use that term) and to try to get original 'Trek fans to take a look.

Well I took a look. You need'nt bother unless of course you'd like more Star Wars material!

Star Trek or Star Wars?
rickpen28 October 2021
This felt a LOT more like a Star Wars universe story. The visuals were over saturated with bright colors, leaning on the red spectrum, making it rather unpleasant from me to watch. About the only big plus for me was Kate Mulgrew. Popping up at the end. Perhaps this was their children's story line in opposite to lower decks which is more adult oriented. The "evil" characters seem a bit too dark for children though. Hopefully it will improve with time.

Star Trek, pure and simple.
chrisles-3503029 December 2023
I was born in 1959 and saw this when I was 64.

I thought it would be kids stuff. But if you're writing when you can't have gory nasty stuff you have to wright a good strong story, and this is a good strong story. I loved it.

If you have never watched a single Star Trek episode or film this is a great way into the franchise. It is heart and soul Star Trek. You feel better for watching it. In an ideal world this is what humanity should be striving for.

If you have watched Star Trek before you won't be disappointed. Do not let the Nickelodeon brand put you off. This is not sugar coated. It deals with the very core of Starfleet and the Prime Directive. There are also plenty of Easter Eggs for the hardened Trekky.

Quit a refreshing surprise and well worth watching.

Great production value marred by childish dialogs and poor writing.
foxcool28 October 2021
It's visually great but with unlikable lead and immature story.

The lead was supposed to be a slave but behaves like a regular awkward kid in the class, too cheerful and talk way too much.

It just feels like lost potential. The show could have been clone wars or the bad batch that transcend age demographics, instead they just made another kids show.
