During a Q&A at the 2020 Mammoth Film Festival, Peter Facinelli said that the film had two other scuttled locations before they found the filming sites they ended up using in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They were first supposed to film in Ohio, but the tax incentives fell through; then they were prepared to film in Selma, Alabama, before finding the locations in Tuscaloosa. Facinelli said that Tuscaloosa "was the most beautiful one out of all three, even nicer than the one in Ohio. So somehow, God kept giving us these little gifts along the way."
During a cast and crew Q&A at the 2020 Mammoth Film Festival , director Peter Facinelli said that the original title, "Hour of Lead," was taken from an Emily Dickinson poem. He said, "for me it meant that hour of heaviness when you've had something really harsh happen in your life...this is [the main characters'] hour of lead."
