Big Wave

It was very cool. And the one liners were funny. Fishermensmell is wrong.

I watched this solely to hear the music of Tatsurô Yamashita, who creates a soundtrack of city pop and yacht rock with plenty of Brian Wilson-inspired sounds alongside covers of Beach Boys classics such as 'Girls on the Beach' and 'Darlin''. The film is dedicated to the memory of Dennis Wilson who had passed in December 1983. The soundtrack also features music by the Pineapple Boys. I really enjoyed this aspect.

If you consider the film, then, as a long-form music video it's fine. But really it's very cheesy with the way it's edited and the narration is littered with terrible unfunny one-liners. Kamasami Kong sounds like an American Alan Partridge. Case in point: a montage of hang-gliders falling and crashing is accompanied by a soundtack of overdubbed comedic 'boings' and 'bombs aways' whilst the voice -over asks "is it a bird...is it a plane... no it's an idiot!" This all became very tedious.

The beach shots of women are very leery, although not moreso than any other TV show or film of the time. In that regard this really is a strange time capsule of the West Coast (from California to Texas) in the mid-80s and the lifestyle of those attracted to surfing, skating, hang-gliding, BMXing etc.
