Don't you know, a magician never reveals their secret.
cgvsluis27 February 2021
"The only thing that would surprise me about you is if you had no surprises."-Logan to Tess

This episode of Crossword Mysteries entitled Abracadaver starts with Tess taking a slight of hand class at the Mystery Manor in New York. As a student, Tess is allowed to celebrate her birthday at the Mystery Manor where normally only members are allowed. We and Tess get a sneak peak of a new trick someone is testing out in one of the "practice" rooms...and then we see the same Magician, "the amazing Alastair and his assistant Bianca" perform on the night of Tess's birthday. Tess ends up with an extra seat at her table, so she invites the new crime writer at the paper...which is how she ends up seated between him and detective Logan for the show. Logan gives her a cute bracelet with a crossword charm for her birthday...and the new crime writer red roses, making you think there is going to be a little rivalry set up for Tess' affections.

The Mystery Manor is in a gorgeous old mansion and the evening's magician performs a disappearing watch with an audience member for his first trick and works up to a trick involving a revolver that Tess gets pulled in to helping out with. She writes her initials on the bullet that will be used in the "bullet catch" trick, the same one Tess witnessed in practice. The magician ends up dying in the performance of the trick and Logan ends up investing...telling Tess to leave it alone, of course!

"I just happen to be here because it's Tess' birthday and we're friends...you know that."-Logan to his partner Winston

Before Tess leaves for the evening to let the police do the investigating, she sees a beautiful woman ascend the staircase alone and Tess follows her, but looses her in a hallway to no where filled with props and historic posters.

"How many times do I have to hear your, 'Tess stay out of police business' speech?"-Tess "As long as you keep disregarding it."-Logan "You're like a paper that keeps printing the same puzzle, day after day after day..."-Tess

Tess goes down the rabbit hole to find an engineer of illusions named Sinclair, using a series of clues. Sinclair was larger than life and fascinating! But the real wonder of this episode is that Logan knows how to tango and there is a great twist with the mystery!

This show continues to get better and the chemistry between Logan and Tess continues to grow. Another solid entry in the hallmark movies and mysteries channel.

Hallmark mystery franchise
SnoopyStyle4 October 2020
Tess Harper (Lacey Chabert) is taking magic class at The Magic Manor. She attends a show where the magician Alistair is murdered on stage. NYPD Lt. Logan O'Connor (Brennan Elliott) is assigned the case and finds that Tess is doing her own investigating again.

Hallmark is making this a mystery franchise on its channel. Chabert is a great lead to do one of these harmless murder mystery series. There are a couple of problematic issues. First, the series needs to manufacture a more compelling reason for Tess to keep getting involved in these crimes. It would be easier if she gets a column to write mysteries for the paper and she convinces Logan to be her source. Without that, she becomes Angela Lansbury serial killing across network TV and nobody has figured it out yet. Think about it. Everybody around her keeps dying and she gets the glory of solving each case. She's the killer.

The other issue is a lack of intensity. It's a matter of writing and directing. Of course, this is done on the cheap and one must excuse it to some extent. It takes a more imaginative mind to give this series some better action and thrills. Maybe it can add thrills through other means like a love triangle. It has the ingredients but it barely has a love duet. This is another aspect that desperately needs developing before this franchise can truly be successful.

The House of Magic
bkoganbing30 January 2020
Our Crossword mystery girl Lacey Chabert is trying to create a crossword puzzle with a magic theme. She and her detective friend Brennan Elliott go to a place advertised as The House Of Magic where a David Copperrfield type magician entertains and holds court for aspiring magicians.

In a performance where magician Noam Jenkins allegedly catches a bullet with his teeth it goes wrong and the illusion goes wrong. With a homicide cop on the scene, the investigation begins right away.

All I'll say is that Jenkins had some interesting and illegal sidelines. And the assistant for him that night Kaitlyn Leeb finds herself in danger.

A nice plot with an interesting twist at the end.

Why was the last mystery of the year not shown!? I am so tired of 3 months of the same cheesy Christmas movies when the channel clearly states it is "mysteries" I am furious they took away our last mystery for this crap. The guide said it was Abracadaver. Boo on Hallmark!

I came here to solve a mystery
rebekahrox27 October 2019
I couldn't figure out why I didn't remember watching this movie, because I know I would not have missed it. I really like the crossword mystery series and have it set up to record. Well now I know I'm not crazy. What the what Hallmark? **finally saw it, after a 3 month delay. This was a disappointment although in general, I think the Crossword series is going to be my favorite mystery series by Hallmark. Brennan Elliot's investigative skills leave a lot to be desired. They consist of asking everyone in sight, "did you see anything unusual/out of the ordinary/strange?" Lacey Chabert is really starting to get on my nerves with her little "Heh-Heh" giggle after what seems like every other line she delivers.

Abracadaver

When a famous magician drops dead in the middle of a performance, in front of a packed crowd, could this seemingly natural death actually be murder? Tess Harper (Chabert), the New York Sentinel Crosswords editor is once again teamed up with NYPD's finest detective, Logan O'Connor (Elliott). The two have to find a way to work together to uncover the challenging clues to solve this murder.

Strange how Logan repetitively tells Tess to not get involved in the case, despite the fact that she has solved the case a few times already. Does Tess listen? No- and thank goodness for that or else the case of magician's catching the bullet trick wouldn't be solved, but after the usually nosing around by Tess and Logan. It's a good mystery, boosted by the world of illusionists. Mystery and magic work hand to hand I think. Love the title!

Poor ratings here are NOT about this movie
chickory711 January 2020
The low ratings are due to anger at Hallmark promoting this like crazy and then switching at the last minute to one of their endless supply of Christmas movies. The audience for the mysteries is most likely not the same audience for the Christmas movies. Hallmark! Start a Christmas channel and keep your mysteries channel!! Have mysteries set at Christmas if you want, just give us mysteries!

The Crossword Mysteries is one of Hallmark's better mystery series. I've watched them all, love many of them, like some, tolerated some, etc etc. Here there is a really nice chemistry between the leads. Also they are both intelligent and thoughtful characters. Although all mysteries require a suspension of disbelief, this is so much less ridiculous than so many out there. In fact, in the world of mysteries, it is just about realistic. I grew up watching and reading mysteries with my Mom, so I have seen and read a ton. I really love Crossword Mysteries and look forward to the next!

Find her characters extremely annoying. It's a shame because her supporting cast is usually pretty good. Move on Lacey.

Very Disappointed
brendadukebluedevil21 October 2019
I love watching Crossword Mysterious and it was advertised so many times that it build me up, to be just let down. I never seen anything saying that the show was cancelled. This is sad not to see the last episode of the year.

Not bad.

Not the best in murder mystery dramas but certainly not the worst. I enjoyed it. The mystery was intriguing enough for me to keep watching. I hope I can find the other episodes in the series.

All that giggling
LtlHippo13 April 2020
I know Lacey is a favorite along with Danica and Candice but Hallmark needs some new ladies. This movie was rather boring and it got annoying with Lacey giggling all the time like a school girl.

NYC - haha. Not even an illusion
cjlakecontact27 June 2023
20 minutes into this I realized they were supposed to be in Manhattan. No garbage, taxis, busses, or randos on the sidewalk. 90% caucasians without New Yawk, Bhruklyn, QWEENS or Bronks accents? Characters are bland. Zero personality. Zero snark or attitude in the News Room. Come on. Should have set this in Ohio.

Then. There's hair and dress curtesy of J. Crew catalogue 90s. Very amusing Hallmark. Very amusing. You're a real card.

Plot: I do appreciate the attempt to weave the "puzzle" of solving crosswords and solving crime. Give you that. But Detective character Brennan is giving Darren in "Bewitched" 1970s with his annoyance of Tess using her brain power to crack each case. Same character Marco does this in the "Flower Shop Mysteries" too with Brooke shields as Abby. Whose fantasy is this? A make-believe world.
