Glad this was aired
dlmvegas25 April 2019
The episodes for this show have been exceptional. This one was above that bar even. Glad they had the guts to show how our veterans are treated by the our disgusting government after being wounded in the service of this country. They put their lives on the line for their country and to get treated like this is disgusting. It does happen and I have heard many stories like the one told here in this episode. My hats off to the writers and the producers of this episode.

Teams endure much more beyond the mission.

Excellent dual storyline showing how the cost of freedom isn't tallied solely on the battlefield. As a country, we should be ashamed at the level of healthcare we provide for those who gave so much. They should not have to suffer through the lame politics of VA healthcare. Well done! .

Hard to Watch But a Great Episode
mike-954-40482730 April 2019
"Medicate and Isolate" is the perfect tag for what the VA does to veterans like myself. I have had PTSD since 1976 and it went diagnosed until 2014. They prescribe pills to make you a zombie so you won't be trouble for anyone. Pills for the pain and pills for the brain. "Have some candy, hero." and out the door you go. Thanks for showing America what the "system" is really like. Too many of my brothers are committing suicide because getting anything done is impossible. The pills make you crazy. And you options are limited - a strait jacket or a body bag.

Entirely too accurate
HelloBlockbuster1 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As a veteran with severe mental health issues this episode was difficult for me. It took me two days to watch. QUITE ACCURATE. Ever wonder what happens to veterans at the VA? This is a good example. If documentation wasn't properly kept/recorded and the injury isn't rated as "service connected" (or meeting the criteria to be fully covered regardless) then they are only able to treat symptoms and not the underlying non-service connected injury. This is what we call red tape. This is why 22 veterans commit suicide a day. This is why a good portion choose to do so in a VA parking lot. This episode is entirely too accurate. You want to help a veteran? ADVOCATE FOR ONE because they advocated for you when you didn't even know you needed advocating for.

PRETTY ACCURATE VA EXPERIENCE
corey-hawn26 April 2019
What hurts the most about being a veteran and watching this episode is knowing how similar my own experience had been to the story. Taking 6 pills a day at the age of 29 instead of actually treating anything, and then if you didn't think to complain about it while you were still active and there is no record of the incident then your lying and we can't help. Although, the only explanation for your issues could military service related to combat. Let the VA health care system be an example of what health care in America would look like if it was ran by the government. There is no improving it because there is politics involved no actually cares just about the health of the soldier. There a president right now who wants to try and fix the VA or at least let us go see our our doctors and the VA pay for it. But since he is one party and the other side didn't come up with it they oppose it. This was a great episode to show people a day in the life of a veteran at the doctor (because it does take a day) the only thing it does show is the 1 month or to prior that it took for him to schedule those appointments and wait till the day came. Very accurate and very sad to say that it is.

It was very sad. I had a good cry. I hope the VA isn't that bad these days. It was nice that the team didn't leave the soldier behind.

An amazing episode highlighting the challenges experienced by wounded we military. The uplifting part was how the American military never leaves a man behind

Oh my gosh! How do we abandon our brave and those who have fought so we don't have to. Excellent episode from an excellent show. I hope CBS renews it!

Very sad, probably accurate

Warning: Spoilers
I found this episode very, very depressing, but probably quite accurate from a mental health perspective. As someone who has never faced combat in the context of war, I can only imagine the trauma, both physical and psychological. On the bright side, I found the retrieval of the fallen soldier quite wonderful. And that air support scene was magnificent. The dedication to one another and commitment to the very end is incredible and highly laudable. The suicide was something I saw coming, unfortunately. I was expecting to see the gunshot from a distance as Clay approached the vehicle. Intense episode, overall.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is an excellent example of how we Vets are 'accommodated' by Our V A System. Long waits, shoddy care - in many instances- Lack of Real help often times. Come in, 10-20 min appointment, 'take a pill' and come back in 6mo or a year or two...Specialty docs are not too bad but 'Primary care' is a total abortion (SNHC,LasVegas). Doctor/Patient relationships are non-existent because the doctors seldom last even 1 year before quitting. It is sad. (think of this when debating government single payer healthcare) Medicare is the same, long waits, shortage of any, much less qualified doctors and persistent problems.

Spot On VA story line
fleck05IMDB9 February 2020
There are a lot of caring healthcare workers at VA's - this episode was not about running them down - it was about the bureaucracy that's killing vets. Like the line in this episode - imagine if the post office ran healthcare. This episode was an accurate reflection with many of my friends. This isn't a problem of a political party, it is a natural bureaucratic outgrowth of any large government organization.

Good and bad

I loved everything about this episode except how they were hating on the VA healthcare system. I know the VA healthcare system is far from perfect everywhere, but where I live it's nowhere as bad as how they portray in this episode.

Exaggerated and inaccurate VA portrayal
peabody00012 May 2019
My mother, brother, and I all have VA healthcare. Yes, specialist appointments do take a long time to get in, that's true. The more budget cuts there are, the worse that gets. But primary care in our experience is good, mine is better than any private insurer I ever had. I find that even though they're overworked and underpaid, the staff at the clinics and MCs are caring, compassionate people who want to do a good job. Except for that one guy in pharmacy that really pisses me off. :) BIG INACCURACY - saying they can't treat TBI because it isn't combat related. That's BS because that's not how VA healthcare works. You go in and get treated for whatever you have. I fell down a flight of steps in September and they treated the torn MCL that resulted. They didn't refuse my care because it happened in my living room. Veterans who never saw combat have VA health care, so I don't know where they came up with that crap. The VA can do better, but still does a better job than any other healthcare system would if working on such a moving target of a budget.

This hit so close to home. Wow
steve-victory-sv6 May 2019
I really do enjoy this show very much and have considered it a pretty decent reflection of the effects the military can have on life and families. This particular episode matched my experience with the VA in my case as well as other family I got to witness first-hand. I can only hope more people become aware of the ongoing insanity that so many people are going through in order to try and serve their country only to be forgotten when they are hurt and need our help the most. Contact your state and federal representatives and urge them to increase funding for our VA system.

This episode was truly heartbreaking, yet also very important. The American Public needs to know how horribly the VA Hospitals treat our Veterans and Soldiers. The end scene with Clay crying after finding Swan was just so sad.

Another brilliant and powerful episode

Reality of what vets face on their return to "normal" life.

Not only action but this show continues to to delve into the personal lives of characters and the team.

Warning: Spoilers
This is such a great episode, the two story lines, Bravo team on a body retrieving mission and Spencer with Swanny at the doctor's, while seemingly not so relevant at the first, they really corresponded perfectly to each other for the theme in the end. The scene where Swan walks past the long hallway alone, and the Bravo team sees the body of the Captain covered in American flag off, with the end song is really very touching and thought-provoking. Our freedom is at a cost, not only those heroes who past away, but also the injuries of the survived. Got you think about our system, the politicians, government, the hospital/medication system. Maybe with a better system and policy for the veterans, Swan may have a different ending; and who knows how many are there just like, if not worse than him?

Veteran's Affairs accuracy 8
dncorp25 April 2019
Nope Accuracy 0

Since the Vietnam War, in Command of a Platoon of U.S. Army Special Forces Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol, 5 Squads of 12 U.S.A.S.F. L.R.R.P.s per squad, Squads 1 thru 4 were divided into 4 Team Member L.R.R.P. Teams, 5th Squad was the "Crash the Party" Squad as armed with M-60 Machine guns with a Rucksack (Alice Pack) full of linked together 7.62mm ammunition belts, .45 caliber M-2/3 submachineguns, M-79 Grenade Launchers, Four UH-1s and Two UH-1 Gunships on standby, their Mission exfiltrate any of my U.S.A.S.F. L.R.R.P. Teams.

Procedures (minus the classified) since the Vietnam War. Also Lessons Learned from the Disaster of the Battle of Mogadishu.

U.S. Army Special Forces Teams, ODAs and ODBs, on standby as a "Mike Force" with Helicopter Transportation and Helicopter Gunships. Mission large U.S.A.S.F. Force as a Response Force. see 1968 movie "Green Berets".

Since the invention of the RQ (Reconnaissance "Drone") and MQ (Armed "Drone") these usually provide "Overwatch" 24/7 as electro optical, thermal imaging. U.S.A.S.F. Team Members are equipped and trained to paint the targets with laser designator, handoff from MQ of launched Air to Ground Missile (A.G.M.).

During the 2001 Overthrow of the Afghan Taliban Government became Standard Operating Procedure (S.O.P.) to have U.S. Air Force AC-130s in orbit around Mission Area. Any known Enemy getting near the Mission Area is killed by U.S.A.F. AC-130s.

At the Mission Area, ODBs provide Perimeter Security if ODBs not available then U.S. Army Rangers like what happened during "Blackhawk Down" the small part of the Battle of Mogadishu. U.S.M.C. MARSOC were not trained nor equipped for this, only Direct Actions (DA) Missions, like the U.S. Navy's S.E.A.L.s, Ancient History one of my Missions was training U.S.M.C. Force Recon to become more like U.S.A.S.F. as today's U.S.M.C. MARSOC.

Rescue, Recapture, Recovery (bodies), "Triple R" Missions, must occur within minutes to an hour, not the over 20 hours to get from CONUS to where ever. The others we trained to do "Triple R" Missions were the U.S.A.F.'s Para Rescue Jumpers converted to be more like Us, U.S. Army Special Forces, as U.S. Air Force's Special Operations Wing's Special Tactics Teams.

Accuracy 8 Facts

Ever since Veteran's Administration became Veteran's Affairs with most of Veteran's Affairs no longer being U.S. Military Veteran Doctors and Medical Professionals, U.S. Military Veteran Administrators as replaced by U.S. Civilian Contractors, Civilian Doctors and Medical Professionals the Standards of Care of U.S. Military Veterans decreased, as just another Civilian job, no more sympathy nor empathy for U.S. Military Veterans from U.S. Military Veteran Doctors and Medical Professionals.

Democrat President Obama's U.S. Laws 2009 to 2017 Cut the U.S. Defense Budget not only cut the Budgets of U.S. Military, U.S. Intelligence Agencies, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers but also cut the Budget of Veteran's Affairs. His 2011 "Obama Nuclear Option Automatic Sequestrations" U.S. Law further Cut the Budget of All U.S> Government Agencies. Today Republican President Trump can do nothing to reinstate the Obama Budget Cuts as Democrats have controlled the Chairs of the Most Important U.S. Congressional (Budget, Finance, and Appropriations) Committees since 2006. I watched the Veteran's Affairs with lack of funds here turn to _________!!!!!!

Unfair Portrayal of VA
bill-21581 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I get treatment at a VA Hospital that is not ranked as one of the best in the USA. It does take about 2 months to get an appointment. You do wait a long time to get a prescription filled if you wait for it. However, I never had to wait all day to get seen, or was told I couldn't be seen once I was there for an appointment. Also, I'm not sure if any VA Hospital is as paper-based as they portray here.

I receive treatment for things that have happened to me since leaving the navy. Disability compensation has to be related to an injury or medical condition received during one's time in the military, but the VA does treat you for conditions that happen after the military.

I also don't like how stupid they made the one vet in the waiting room. When he asks Clay where he was injured, Clay answers, "The Philippines". The vet responds with, "You're a little young to have fought on Guadalcanal". Really? You have to make the vet stupid enough to think the Battle of Guadalcanal was fought in the Philippines? For this reason alone, the episode gets 1 star.

Maybe I'm just lucky with the VA Hospital I go to. Otherwise, this is an unfair portrayal and more stupid writing.

This episode and series is watchable, but these stupid mistakes and ignorant writing make the episodes hard to watch.
