Eimi Imanishi is thematically expanding her Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival winner, “Battalion to My Beat,” as a narrative feature film titled “Doha – The Rising Sun.”
The film, written and directed by Imanishi, will follow Mariam, a young woman who is forced to return home to Western Sahara when she is deported from Europe. Adrift in the very place that was once her home, she desperately searches for the means to assert agency over her own life.
Imanishi participated in Film Independent’s directors lab, followed by the Sundance Institute’s screenwriting and directing labs in 2018. She then met New York-based producer Shrihari Sathe who came on board to produce “Doha.” The producing team has since expanded to include Eric Dupont (“Last Film Show”), who was Oscar-nominated for “Ave Maria”; Virginie Lacombe (“Port Authority”) from France; and Barcelona-based Belén Sanchez (“Tobacco Barns”). Post-pandemic audiences are much more open to different cultures, thanks to streaming and exposure to new types of content, but some of the world’s biggest film industries are still figuring out how to adapt in a rapidly changing landscape, said speakers on the ‘Cinematic Crossovers’ panel in Red Sea Souk.
Leading producers from three industries with an international footprint – Woo-sik Seo from Korea’s Barunson C&c, a subsidiary of Barunson E&a (Parasite), Dheer Momaya from India’s Jugaad Motion Pictures (Last Film Show) and Jadesola Osiberu, founder of Nigeria’s Greoh Studios (Gangs Of Lagos) – compared their business and funding models with the old world system set up by France’s Cnc and the nascent film industry in Saudi Arabia.
But they concluded by saying that, despite their success in achieving global impact, the current systems face some challenges – particularly in terms of censorship and IP ownership.

Indian Contender ‘2018’ Director Talks Oscar Campaign, Unveils New Missing Ship Thriller (Exclusive)
Jude Anthany Joseph, director of India’s international feature Oscar contender “2018,” has started work on his next film.
The untitled investigative thriller is being written by the filmmaker alongside journalist Josy Joseph. The film is based on the true story of Kerala Shipping Corporation’s cargo ship Mv Kairali that disappeared in 1979 with a crew of 49 and 20,000 tonnes of iron ore on board while sailing from Margao, India to Rostock, Germany, via Djibouti.
“It’s really fascinating to learn the historical importance of this incident and how the investigation never succeeded. As a filmmaker it is a challenging subject to execute,” Joseph told Variety. Production is due to commence in the last quarter of 2024.
Meanwhile, “2018” screened at the ongoing International Film Festival of India (Iffi), Goa and the producers threw a lavish party to celebrate the film’s progress. The survival drama based on the climate change-caused floods that...

It’s not uncommon for seasoned filmmakers to, at some point, turn their lens towards their own love for cinema. Steven Spielberg recently treated us to The Fablemans and in the same year, Pan Nalin delves into his personal narrative to gift us Last Film Show, a tale about the essence of life in cinema and life through cinema. The heartwarming story unfolds in a rural corner of India, where traditional movie theaters are becoming scarce. It centers on a young boy named Samay (reminiscent of François Truffaut’s The Wild Child), who, despite lacking the means, is determined to create cinema of his own.…...

Two movies which come in on immigration from vastly different angles – Laura Ferrés’ “The Permanent Picture” and Ken Loach’s “The Old Oak” – won big Saturday night at Spain’s Valladolid Festival, walking off with its main competition Golden Spike and the Spanish event’s best actor (Dave Turner) and Audience Award plaudits respectively.
The prize ceremony also saw Charlotte Rampling, star of closing film “Juniper” from Matthew J. Saville, accept an enthusiastically applauded Honorific Spike for her career achievement.
Though decided upon by independent juries, Valladolid’s prizes say much about the new-fit festival after a first-year reboot by new director José Luis Cienfuegos, previously a Gijón and Seville fest head.
Under directors Fernando Lara (1984-2004), Juan Carlos Frugone (2005-08) and Javier Angulo (2009-2022), Valladolid has consolidated as one of Spain’s biggest festivals, after San Sebastián. and a bastion of auteurist, arthouse independent cinema. Few figures in Europe...

Last year, as movies conceived and shot during the Covid-19 pandemic began to be released, we saw a sudden influx of films rejoicing in the act of moviemaking and movie-watching. From Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” to Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon,” from Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light” to the Indian Oscar entry “Last Film Show,” a surprising number of films bred during pandemic isolation were movies about movies.
And a year later, during the final days of the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, another movie that belongs in that company had its world premiere. “The Movie Teller,” a Spanish-language film set in Chile and made by a Danish director with a cast whose biggest names are known for French and German movies, puts an international spin on the love of movies and embraces the art of storytelling in a way that is at times profoundly moving.

Tech developer Barco has brought its new Hdr Lightsteering cinema projector to Cannes, previewing the system for filmmakers in advance of a rollout that is expected to begin in early 2024.
This “lightsteering” technology is an option that Barco believes would give moviegoers a brighter, Hdr image — therefore a wider creative palette for filmmakers — compared with most of today’s laser-projection systems.
The tech effectively throws more light at parts of the image that require high brightness, but not the darker areas, which the company contends makes their system a more efficient user of light and therefore more cost effective than proposed Hdr-capable LED cinema screens.
The company has been presenting this system for more than a year at a bespoke setup in Hollywood to filmmakers and studio execs, after first debuting what was then-developing tech to a limited number of guests in private demos at CinemaCon in 2018.

’Rrr’ has struck a chord with foreign audiences and its song, ‘Naatu Naatu’, with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which awards the Oscars. Wish there was a category for choreography as well at the Oscars, for, I think, that has created the magic that ‘Naatu Naatu’ has become known for.
We had Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ and, later, Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, both of which made it big at the Oscars. We were thrilled about it. But they were not the products of any of the Indian film industries. They merely had India-related stories.
Quite a few other filmmakers tried for nominations at the Oscars
The earlier one was Mehboob Khan’s ‘Mother India’. They probably did not identify with a woman refusing to compromise even while her kids were starving. It was the post-World War II era and there were stories about women known to compromise...

Slumdog Millionaire also got Resul Pookutti the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing, while lyricist Gulzar and Ar Rahman jointly won the award for the Best Original Song (‘Jai Ho’), taking India’s count for the movie to three. Streaming giants like Netflix and Prime Video have made it even easier for American movies to gross huge numbers globally, and they’ve made it easier for foreign films to garner more widespread attention in the United States. The hugely popular Indian film Rrr is the latest success story in that vein: It was a commercial hit in its home country and picked up steam when it was dubbed in English for distribution through Netflix in mid-2022.
The film, an adventure epic from Indian filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli, began drawing comparisons to Parasite for its ability to attract large worldwide audiences. It was a hit at the box office and on the streaming platform for months. Despite its large fan base and commercial success, Rrr hasn’t earned the attention from the Academy Awards that many think it deserves. There are a few potential reasons why, which fans and film critics have explored.

Watching The Fabelmans takes you back to India’s official entry to Oscars – Pan Nalin’s ‘Chhello Show’, which is alleged to be similar to ‘Cinema Paradiso’. Chhello Show tells the story of a 9-year-old kid Samay. His parents take him for his maiden movie experience that gets him absolutely mesmerized by films and filmmaking, to the point that he decides to become a filmmaker, unaware of the heart-breaking times that await him. Samay leaves his parents and moves with his uncle to pursue his passion for films like Samuel Fabelman whose parents separate, his heart is broken but life goes on.
The Fabelmans is a coming-of-age family drama directed by Steven Spielberg, who co-wrote it with Tony Kushner. The film is a semi-autobiographical story loosely based on Spielberg’s adolescence and formative years as a filmmaker, told through an original story of the fictional Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel Labelle), a...

Rrr was the biggest surprise at the movies in 2022. Its wide global reach as a Telugu language film went well above expectations and it proved to be a major boon to Netflix’s movie slate, which in recent years has been putting an increased focus on international film.
The movie is a sweeping epic, packed with action and violence. But the scene with the most buzz is the “Naatu Naatu” sequence: a massive dance number buoyed by an infectiously catchy song. And according to those who worked on it, the seemingly complex scene was built around a philosophy of simplicity.

On Jan. 24, India had three reasons to celebrate: an original song Oscar nomination for “Naatu Naatu,” the showstopping tune featured in the film Rrr; a documentary feature nom for All That Breathes; and a documentary short nom for The Elephant Whisperers — a respectable showing for a country that takes great pride in its cinematic output. But if leaders of the nation’s film industry had played their cards differently a few months earlier when deciding which film should represent India in the best international feature Oscar competition, there could have been even more cause for celebration.
For that Oscar category, a country can submit only one title. There are no exceptions for countries with vibrant film industries that produce multiple worthy candidates each year because, as it is, Academy members who volunteer to evaluate the submissions barely have time to consider that many. Indeed, 92 countries and regions entered a title this season.

In the past 55 years in which India has been sending entries for the Best International Feature Film Oscar, it has been on just three occasions that the selected movies, despite some of them being critically acclaimed both in India and abroad, have made it to the nominations shortlist.
A dismal record, if any, calling in question the selection process.
The three films on this rather bald list are the Nargis-Sunil Dutt classic “Mother India” (1957), Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay” (1988) and Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Aamir Khan-starrer “Lagaan” (2001).
This year, the official selection — “Chhello Show”, Nalin Kumar Pandya aka Pan Nalin’s Gujarati film — again lost out to a strong field comprising, among others, the German World War I drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” and the Golden Globe winner, “Argentina, 1985” (the historical drama from Argentina around the fight waged by a group of lawyers against the South American’s...

Indian filmmaker Pan Nalin’s Gujarati film ‘Chhello Show’ or ‘Last Film Show’ lost out in the 95th Oscar Awards race as it did not make it to the final nominations. ‘Chhello Show’ was selected as India’s official entry in the Best International Feature Film category at the 95th Academy Awards, but in the final nomination list, it lost to ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ (Germany), ‘Argentina, 1985’ (Argentina), ‘Close’ (Belgium), ‘Eo’ (Poland) and ‘The Quiet Girl’ (Ireland).
Directed by Pan Nalin, ‘Chhello Show’ is a Gujarati-language coming-of-age drama about a nine-year-old boy, Samay (Bhavin Rabari), who’s ensnared by the magic of cinema and sets forth to fulfil his 35mm celluloid dreams.
It stars Bhavin Rabari, Bhavesh Shrimali, Richa Meena, Dipen Raval and Paresh Mehta. The film had premiered at the 20th Tribeca Film Festival in June 2021 and was theatrically released in India in October 2022.

By now, on the eve of Oscars nominations, there are many prospective nominees that read as sure bets.
For example, given all the recognition they have received from awards bodies that include Academy voters, it would truly be a shock not to see “TÁR” star Cate Blanchett or “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star Michelle Yeoh nominated for Best Actress. Prognosticators may not be able to predict what the second half of the Best Picture nominees will be, but all feel comfortable saying “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “The Fabelmans” will get in there.
To get a better gauge on what will be nominated and likely win every category at the 95th Oscars, read IndieWire’s predictions here. However, we thought it would also be fun to anticipate some of the biggest reaches that could still come true, as far as nominations in the above the line categories go.

As was the tendency in the last years, South Indian films continued to dominate the box office in 2022, with “Rrr” and “Vikram” being some of the highlights, and the former actually getting international recognition, as the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu highlights. In another international success for Indian cinema, Pan Nalin’s “Last Film Show” was shortlisted for the Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category, while Pan Nalin documentary “All That Breathes” won the Grand Jury Prize in World Cinema Documentary Competition in Sundance, before it was also shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature for the 95th Academy Awards. If you add to all these the fact that local movies seem to find more space in international festivals, it seems that finally Indian movies are getting the recognition they deserve. The feat can be attributed to both an “opening” from the West towards...

The entertainment industry in India seems to be in a celebratory mood. So much seems to be happening with it, all at the same time. Last week, a song from S S Rajamouli’s ‘Rrr’, ‘Naatu Naatu’, won the Golden Globe. Besides this, the film has been a hot favourite on the awards circuit. ‘Rrr’ has caught the fancy of the western audience, the media as well as the film fraternity there. What is good about ‘Rrr’ is that it is not an imitation of any Hollywood film, nor does it lift western culture as if it has always belonged to us.
The films we send officially as Indian entries to the Oscars are always pathetic. An example is ‘Gully Boy’. Now, what was Indian or original about it? It looked like a coterie was at work – the kind that often decides which film wins popular awards, but it still...

Park Chan-wook’s noirish romance “Decision to Leave” makes the running in the Asian Film Awards by collecting ten nominations, including best film and best director.

Zhang Yimou, the acclaimed mainland Chinese director of “One Second,” “Hero” and “Raise the Red Lantern,” will head a seven-person jury that sorts through the nominated films and decides the winners.
Organizers said that a total of 30 films from 22 countries or territories received 81 nominations in 16 categories.
The final awards will be presented at a ceremony that relocates to Hong Kong, after being held for two years in Busan and was omitted entirely in 2022. If one’s diet of international cinema were to consist only of Oscar-shortlisted titles, they would be missing out on some of the best of what filmmakers around the world have to offer. That’s not a knock at the academy’s taste. After all, it can only consider one submission per country. Nevertheless, this system of selecting nominees could use a facelift, if not to acknowledge the increasing prominence of multinational films then to at least shed light on suppressed art like Jafar Panahi’s “No Bears.”

The shortlisting of the ‘Naatu Naatu’ song picturised on Ram Charan and Jr Ntr from ‘Rrr’ for the Oscar in the best original song category has come as another major achievement for S S Rajamouli’s epic adventure film.
The frenetically fast-paced ‘Naatu Naatu’, composed by M M Keeravani, and sung by Kala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj, already has a Golden Globe nomination. Keeravani also got the accolade for best music director from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
Also, on the shortlists are ‘Chhello Show’ (The Last Show), the Gujarati film by Pan Nalin selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars, in the best international feature category, and Shaunak Sen’s documentary, ‘All That Breathes’, which won an award at Cannes earlier this year.
Being on Oscar shortlists, which are released in phases, is not the same as a nomination.
