I reckon there is a literal black beach (so obviously no pun intended with the title), but there is more to the movie than a landscape ... a location if you will. I reckon the beach can stand for something - the title can give you a clue of the darkness of fate and the struggle to do the right thing.

On the other hand you can also argue that that would be reading too much into it. And you probably would be right with that. The acting is good, the script is or rather seems tight. Still I can't help but feel that there could have been more ... I can't put my finger on it (and I rather wouldn't want to do that anyway, no pun intended) ... but there seems to be some untapped source here ... again no pun intended.

Still the movie has tension and it holds up from start to finish. Even if you feel that certain decisions may not be the wisest ... life is live as they say (they do say that, right?)

Interesting and provoking thriller with noisy action , pursuits and thoughful events
ma-cortes27 May 2023
The film directed by the Spanish filmmaker Esteban Crespo who takes us to the deepest Africa through a story of action and international entanglements . Carlos (Raul Arevalo) is a Spanish CEO who lives in Brussels (Belgium) working for an important USA oil company. He is a businessman who gets a request to intercede on behalf of a US engineer in the oil industry who's been kidnapped. Married with a 8-months pregnant Susan and with his mother Elena (Paulina Garcia) who works as a veteran United Nations' diplomatic, Carlos' lives in a upper-class full of luxury hoping to turn in associate of the company and with plan to move with Susan (Melina Matthews) to New York City to get a better life. Carlos decided to undertake a perilous mission but her own spirit and mind will take on an ominous reality. His plans turn bad when his bosses chose him to negotiate in a remote African island country where he lived time ago after to know that Steve Campbell, an American engineer, has been kidnapped by Calixto Batete (Jimmy Castro) , a former Carlos' friend. In the belief to be a fast and easy work, Carlos back to the country living in a house property of LeónLeón Ndong (Emilio Buale) , son of president Gregorio Ndong, and meeting again Alejandra (Candela Pela) , a Spanish NGO cooperator who lives in a boat with her friend and assistant Eva. However, troubles starts to appear by everywhere: Carlos learns that Ada, Carlos' former love interest, married Calixto and she was arrested and imprisoned in the Black Beach jail. Then we live a segment of the film where Carlos goes to visit his old girlfriend who remains locked up in prison. Black Beach is a prison in Equatorial Guinea where human rights are not respected and which gives the film its name. Carlos' attempt to know the truth causes that General Mba, Black Beach's warden, moves his soldiers following Carlos in idea that he find the files by him. Carlos visits Ada's mother Claudina in the desire to save Calixto before he be killed by Ndong's henchmen, but according time passes, Carlos finds himself in a race against time to locate the files with horrible consequences. Not finding the papers, Carlos escapes and returns to visit Mama Claudina to learn horrible happenings about all the residents of her building .

Brooding and thought-provoking flick concerning interesting themes, such as : Multinational corruption , illegal activities of oil companies , genocide of a local tribes, human exploitation by extreme labouring , horrible African conditions where life has not value and death shows up in every corner of the way , violent African wars causing massacre, destruction and chaos. Although the country Carlos is heading to is never mentioned, it can be concluded that it is Equatorial Guinea and we assume that due to political problems, Black Beach has been filmed on the coast of Ghana . Nothing to object to the chosen locations as they are excellent , they place the viewer inside and at the center of the plot , from now on , events precipitate in what already becomes a fast-paced action thriller, adding an impeccable technical wrap with an exciting musical score by Arturo Cardelús and a colorful cinematography by Ángel Amorós. The filmmaker's story already opts for only two options. The personal merges with the professional and Carlos faces the biggest dilemma of his life . He will have to choose between selling his soul to the devil or being able to look his son in the face tomorrow. The viewer will get involved depending on his ability to delve into a script that exudes a certain artificiality . Black Beach (locally also known as Playa Negra) is the name given to a prison located on the island of Bioko, in the capital city of Equatorial Guinea, Malabo. It is one of the most notorious prisons in Africa. Maln and support cast are pretty well. The best of Black Beach goes through the stunning actors in which Raúl Arevalo shines with his own light, playing Carlos , a businessman discovering a reality more dirty than he expected , as he finds out some grisly events more dirty than any remote African island country. A character very rich in nuances as a honest man who sacrifices himself for the unfortunate African people and achieves a good evolution thanks to the script written by Esteban Crespo himself and David Moreno. A script that is also right with the character of Ale interpreted with the usual sympathy by Candela Peña who steals the show. She is an old friend of Carlos and helps him move around the country with the mission of unraveling why and how the businessman everyone is looking for has been kidnapped. The other characters are at the service of the main protagonist. The presence of Melina Matthews stands out as Carlos's wife. She is about to give birth and represents the grieving wife. Another interesting character is the son of the president of the African country. He receives our starring with luxury cars, women at his disposal and cocaine served on a silver platter. Giving a good performance Emilio Buale who was already nominated for Best New Actor at the Goya for El hoyo . Along with a nice support cast such as : Paulina García as Elena , Babou Cham as General Guillermo Mba and Jimmy Castro as Calixto.

The first thing that surprises in Black Beach is the absolute change of register of its director. It should be remembered that we are talking about the second film by Spanish filmmaker Esteban Crespo. In his previous film, titled "Love", the intimate side with which he focused on love in adolescence prevailed. Estebán Crespo is a good craftsman , a writer , director known for Lala (2009), Nadie tiene la culpa (2011) y Aquel no era yo (2012). Black Beach(2020) rating : 7/10. Better than average.

It's not always an easy task to decode about powerful people at powerful places
ridi-arahan10 February 2021
What worked: The strongest aspect of the movie that caught my attention has to be the African culture that I was able to discover, at least superficially. Around half the movie is in Africa and that's fun to watch. The movie has an interesting screenplay that has a scope for a fine movie, if not a great one. What did not work: Screenplay was okay and the movie started fine. It went downwards afterwards. The narrative gets corrupted and mingled in between making it messier and unattractive. I think the movie could have been a better watch if the execution was done better. The editing and action sequences in Africa were not well choreographed. The movie had mediocre acting, an average plot execution making it a superficial project wanting to be smart and intelligent. The movie is not without plotholes. Final verdict: it's an okay movie about something familiar in an unfamiliar settings

To spend the afternoon.
faer_kr5 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A drama with touches of a Spanish thriller. It has no action, the only action is that of the trailer. It is about a Spanish businessman who goes to Africa to look for a kidnapped person and fix a problem that leaves them money, but what he finds is far from that. Quality. Entertaining. Good effects and shots, only in two moments they are fully achieved. Good performances. A Spanish-African mix like "Adú". It has some slightly confusing moments so you have to follow it all. The ending is disconcerting and somewhat abrupt for the entire sequence that it takes. Talk about corruption, power, the corrupted politics of countries, how the system deceives us and does not let you climb. The only problem is a chase scene where they can't stop the protagonist and everyone has guns. To spend the afternoon.

Definitely under-rated. To be watched.
yves-burger6 November 2021
No, it's not fast and furious 8 in Africa. It's more a Constant Gardener type of movie (though not as good). It's realistic regarding the cynical attitude of developped countries, big trusts and even international organizations toward Africa. The story is pretty clear (I did not understand some comments) and actors are good.

What Was That All About?
packmanproductions19 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Black Beach is like showing up for a movie twenty minutes into it. Some guy from Spain is supposed to go to an African country to try and get a kidnapped American engineer back. Some people he used to know were the kidnappers. The country's army gets involved trying to get some documents back to prevent a corrupt government from taking over. The guy's wife is almost nine months pregnant. His mom works as a diplomat in the United Nations. A lot of people get killed. The guy decides to raise the kidnapper's son whom he may have fathered. There's is so much going on that by the time it was done I didn't know what the hell I'd just watched. In the end, all I know is that the guy is unemployed, he has a new daughter and the boy he brought home likes to take baths. If you feel the need to be confused, then, by all means, watch this movie.

Underrated...
fornaris8 February 2021
Being spanish, I appreciate this kind of movies coming from our end, even if the approach is still hollywoodish... Arévalo is one of our best actors and directors nowadays. Even if the script and pace has some flaws, and even if the soundtrack is completely absent (I agree with other comments about it)... this deserves at least a 6 or 7 just for him being there. Btw, Candela Peña is always great too!

Script Writing OUCH.
kevinmaclellan011 February 2021
Poorly written and confusing story. Difficult to follow. Difficult to feel empathy for anything. Action was just a slow burner, lots of mafia style killing in one part but no real explanation. I think they were trying to portray the brutality of the military. But I failed to understand its purpose to a very weak plot. Yeah, the movie deserves low ratings and should even be lower. Don't waste your time. I think you can find better ways to waste time than Black Beach.

Slow.....
elainagray8 February 2021
Good grief this is dull. 40 mins in, it's just full of uninteresting characters and over explaining dialogue about lots of other characters who we haven't met so it doesn't make sense. Classed as 'action and adventure'.....I've seen more action in the Antiques Roadshow.

Surely underrated, but worth a watch !!!
ngbrice2 February 2021
This movie deserves WAY MORE than a 5/10. It clearly points out how worthless african lives are, to corrupt politicians and unscrupulous multinationals. I wish we had more movies of this kind !!!

Just... don't.
giorgiobonfiglio11 February 2021
Confusing plot, mixed with unexciting action. Concept could have been interesting (hence why I'm rating 4 star) but it's poorly developed, with a lot of missed opportunities.

Great political comedy.
pawelpap8 February 2021
Particularly amusing is The Guardian, the lefty newspaper in the role of a beacon of truth. Note the movie is about power of special interests, but the producers tell us the very same journal that did everything in its power to overthrow the first POTUS in generations not indebted to special interests to be a the arbiter of objective truth. I haven't laughed so heartily in years!

Totally Unbeliveable story and
bshaef13 February 2021
Bad acting. The lead actor apparently thinks scowls get his message across. They don't. After a while it was sort of comic. In real life he would have been killed ten times over while in the third world country. Not worth my time.

I don't know why the low rating?
gizmo-030949 February 2021
5.2? That seems extradinarily low for an entertaining, tense and decent budget Netflix movie. Ok, the first half is slow, admittedly, but from then on you have a very exciting and tense thriller, up there with Hollywood production quality. The story is basic, as one might expect with a thriller, but the characters are decently acted and the script is enough to keep your attention, without any boring bits. I would give this a 7.5, but as halfs aren't allowed, I bumped it up to an 8. It is worth a watch.

Poor acting
ahs438 February 2021
Great concept, but poor acting, and very predictable.

The concept is good and it shows some realities of Africa in a way that is just to historical context. However, the plot is predictable and the acting is forced similar to the Wasp Network.

Waste of time!!!
neshane19 February 2021
What a useless movie. Just wasted my Friday night with this. Why do people even make such meaningless movies anymore? Can't they really think this is a flop while they are writing it? Waste of time!

Black Beach could not be saved by it's White Star
fmatt-8898010 February 2021
While I found this international look into the African diaspora cinematically beautiful in its realistic portrayal of how things really are in this mythic African country, the reason for our heroes' trek to the motherland became lost in the director and producers determination to make this just another "kill everybody " movie. A lot of time was taken in dubbing to English with voices that bore no resemblance to the faces on the screen. It's a shame ; this tome about oil, dictators, racism, corporate intrigue,, and a Black child ending up in the care of a white Belgium family just doesn't work. Jack Ryan this character is not! And even then this movie would not end.

Not worth watching!!! Badly filmed. They could have gone to Equatorial Guinea to film, that's where the movie should have been based firstly, not in ghana or Spain.

Worth watching the story unfolds very well
traceytak3 February 2021
I'll admit for about the first half hour I was thinking to myself do I want to continue as I am watching Spanish films to learn the language (I'm English) but I followed this film through to the end and was engrossed the more the story enfolded. I m glad that I didn't get put off by the rating, hence the score. Underrated, the main actor had me rooting for him which says to me that he was very good.

I never listen to 'professional' critics, as I feel they are up their own egotistical a**holes. Not a fast moving movie but still interesting to watch and get caught up in. I liked it.
