More and more shows and movies based on existing franchises are being released, but that might not be in the best long-term interest of media companies.
When the announcement of casting for the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione for the new “Harry Potter” TV series hit the internet last week, it kicked off the inevitable firestorm of controversy from viewers outraged that fictional characters were to be portrayed differently from the image they’d created in their heads. But zooming out from that debate, the news highlighted a trend in entertainment that has been impossible to miss over the past decade: the increased focus on franchises as a source for content. While much of the handwringing over Hollywood’s lack of original ideas has been focused on the movies, the streaming industry is leaning into this trend as well. So, I thought now would be a good time to...

With less than a month until the premiere, Netflix is starting to unveil more information about its upcoming thriller series The Waterfront. This week, series creator Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries) talked to Entertainment Weekly about several aspects of the show and singled out one character — Grady, played by Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3). The new series is set to premiere on June 19.
Grace is widely known for doing comedy — especially the long-running sitcom That 70's Show — and, even though he's done drama and thrillers in his career, you don't necessarily think of him when imagining a character that can give you chills. From the looks of it, this is about to change with The Waterfront. During the interview, Williamson talked about Grace's approach to the character. He stated:
"He brings sort of an unexpectedness to the role. He feels unpredictable. And so we were able to write toward that. So...

The third season of Star Trek: Picard memorably brought back the majority of the cast of The Next Generation, a move that was celebrated by fans. Season 3 drew a near-perfect score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, which was firmly the highest of all three seasons.
There was a downside to bringing back the stars of The Next Generation, even if it resulted in very high acclaim. Per ScreenRant, Terry Matalas was doing an interview for The Sackhoff Show when addressed becoming sole showrunner for Season 3 after serving as co-showrunner alongside Akiva Goldsman for Season 2. He remembered having a vision to make Season 3 feel more like The Next Generation, and from there, all it took was getting Patrick Stewart on board. Unfortunately, the budget would not allow for Stewart's co-stars from the first two seasons to return, meaning that "sacrifices" had to be made.

Michelle Yeoh has her next project. The Oscar-winning actress, who played Emperor Philippa Georgiou on Star Trek: Discovery and the recent spin-off Paramount+ movie Star Trek: Section 31, will star in an action film titled The Surgeon. It will be produced by Thunder Road, the company behind the John Wick saga and its assorted sequels and spin-offs. Roshan Sethi, a physician and co-creator of the Fox television series The Resident, is set to write and direct The Surgeon.
Given Yeoh’s status as an international action icon, she will surely be called upon to beat up more than a few bad guys. According to the entertainment site Deadline, “The film will follow a retired surgeon (Yeoh) who is abducted and forced to operate on a mystery patient. Though greatly outnumbered, her captors have overlooked her greatest weapon: 35 years of surgical experience, leading to an explosive and brutal confrontation during which...

Held under clear skies, Canneseries kickstarted Thursday with much panache via the out-of-competition French premiere of Paramount+’s ‘”The Agency,” a remake of the French hit thriller “The Bureau.”
For its eighth edition, the festival was slightly overshadowed, however, when jury president Norman Reedus of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” fame had to cancel at the last minute for other work commitments. He was replaced by jury member Jeff Russo, Emmy-awarded composer of “Fargo,” also credited for “Ripley” and “Star Trek: Section 31.” Co-jurors of the main competition remained “Pachinko” showrunner Soo Hugh, actors Louise Bourgoin, Lola Dueñas and César Domboy, who walked the pink carpet on Thursday evening.
Crowd onlookers who expected “The Agency” stars Michael Fassbender and Richard Gere or the aforementioned Reedus to share a selfie with them were perhaps disappointed, such as a young Thea, in her 20s, who was coming from Nice to have a...

The so-called Mirror Universe from the "Star Trek" franchise was first glimpsed in the original series' 1967 episode "Mirror, Mirror." That episode saw Kirk (William Shatner) and a few of his Enterprise crewmates accidentally beamed into a parallel dimension thanks to an ion storm. This parallel universe was similar to Kirk's home, only everyone was evil. The U.S.S. Enterprise was now an imperial ship of conquest, and it was common for underlings to assassinate their superiors in order to advance their careers. Starfleet officers were also all equipped with widgets called Agonizers, which their bosses used to inflict painful punishments.
The Mirror Universe wouldn't be seen again until the 1994 "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Crossover." There, it was revealed that the Imperial Fleet had been overrun by Klingons and Romulans in that alternate reality, leaving humans enslaved by a new Empire.

The Star Trek franchise has existed since 1966. It started with a humble television series that proved extremely popular over the decades. The original show’s syndication success led to the first feature film based on it, which was released in 1979.
Since then, the franchise has been rebooted and later expanded on television with multiple spin-offs. However, for years, the William Shatner-directed Star Trek V remained arguably the worst film entry, which nearly ended the expansive franchise decades ago.

After almost 26 years, Shatner’s film can finally have some reprieve as the Michelle Yeoh-led Section 31 movie has broken its record because of its poor reviews. Many fans will agree that it has now taken over the fifth installment as the worst Star Trek movie, and here’s why.

It's time for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to boldly go further into comedy territory.
Per Popverse, Uhura actor Celia Rose Gooding appeared at Emerald City Comic Con's Strange New Worlds panel, where they talked about the show's love of genre pastiche and what genre should be parodied in future seasons. Specifically, Gooding wanted to see Strange New Worlds tackle "Reality. Like, very Abbott Elementary, St. Denis Medical, The Office, just something like that." When the moderator asked if that meant applying The Office's signature mockumentary-style format to an episode's cinematography, they responded, "Sure."
Among Strange New World's most acclaimed episodes last season included a crossover with Star Trek:Lower Decks -- utilizing both animated sequences and casting Lower Decks' actors as their characters -- and a musical storyline where an "improbability field" causes the USS Enterprise crew to break into song and dance.

There's no denying that Star Trek: Section 31 left a bad taste in the mouths of many die-hard Trekkies thanks to what they feel was a film filled with weak characters and an even weaker plot that didn't seem like a Star Trek movie. However, actor Rob Kazinskysays the film wasn't made for the hardcore fan base, and that if the franchise is to continue into the future, you have to try and make "different flavors" that will appeal to everyone to prevent it from "dying."

In the 2025 TV movie "Star Trek: Section 31," Starfleet gathers a loose-knit group of freelance criminals and mercenaries to retrieve a doomsday weapon from a mysterious rogue a-hole. The mercenaries don't know the true identity of the a-hole, but they do know that the doomsday weapon was constructed by their own leader, the vicious tyrant, Empress Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). The character of Empress Georgiou first appeared on "Star Trek: Discovery," and she has been repeatedly established as a horrid monster. She has murdered literally billions of people, tortures people for fun, and is a cannibal. Despite this, she is presented in "Section 31" as a roguish loose cannon, capable of leading a motley crew of sci-fi misfits on a mission of heroism.

At this time last year, few likely had heard of Richard Gadd or Jessica Gunning, and the term “baby reindeer” didn’t immediately call to mind a harrowing exploration of sexual abuse and codependency. Yet, within a month, Baby Reindeer became one of last year’s most widely seen shows, and when the Emmy Awards announced its winners in the limited series and movie categories in September, Gadd, Gunning, and Baby Reindeer won. That’s illustrative of how quickly fortunes can change in the limited series race, which typically resets each season (save for an anthology series like Monsters or Fargo). Ahead, the early 2025 Emmy Awards odds in the movie/limited series categories.

In 2017, "Star Trek" returned to the small screen after a 12-year hiatus with the debut of "Star Trek: Discovery," a big-budget show with slicker production values than the franchise had ever seen. It debuted on Paramount+ (still called CBS All Access in 2017), and it was to be the first of many new "Star Trek" shows that the streaming service would debut over the next few years. It was followed by "Short Treks," "Star Trek: Picard," "Star Trek: Lower Decks," and "Star Trek: Prodigy." The original U.S.S. Enterprise would also make a guest appearance in the second season of "Discovery," inspiring an Enterprise-set spinoff called "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds." Paramount+ also recently debuted the TV movie "Star Trek: Section 31."

It was almost a decade since a feature film was released under the Star Trek umbrella, which isn’t surprising as Star Trek Beyond, despite being a critical hit, was considered a commercial failure due to its massive budget. For better or worse, the wait finally ended with the Michelle Yeoh-led Star Trek: Section 31, which was released as a Paramount Plus exclusive in January.

Fans and critics alike haven’t been kind to the newest Star Trek original movie Star Trek: Section 31. The film is currently sitting with a 19% Tomatometer score and an even lower Popcornmeter rating of 16% among fans, making it one of the worst-received Star Trek projects in franchise history.
It seems no one wants to give the film credit, but it seems that fans of the franchise were more than willing to give it a try given the recently released streaming figures from Nielsen!
The Michelle Yeoh-led original film managed to rack up 170 million minutes viewed during the week of Jan. 20 - Jan. 26, helping it land at the No. 8 spot on the weekly Nielsen Top 10 streaming chart for films. While No. 8 might not seem notable, it’s important to point out that Star Trek: Section 31 wasn’t even released on Paramount+ until Jan. 24 meaning it pulled in 170 million...

Star Trekfans are curious about the very first streaming film in the franchise, Paramount+’s Star Trek: Section 31.
Per Trek Movie, the film, starring Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh, has ranked in the Nielsen Top 10 for the week of Jan. 20 to Jan. 26, 2025. The story focuses on the black-ops division of Starfleet, known as Section 31, which was first introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in the 1990s. The streaming movie premiered on Jan. 24, and for the first week, held the number eight spot with 170 million minutes streamed.

The Star Trek movie franchise is in a current state of flux with the cast of Star Trek Beyond (2016), led by Chris Pine, tapped to return for “Star Trek 4”. Given the understandable concerns about the cast’s age (after nine years since "Beyond") with reprising their roles in “Star Trek 4”, combined with the disappointing Paramount+ movie “Star Trek: Section 31” – the franchise needs to consider changes to reignite their fanbase.
Star Trek creators should completely flip the canon on its head with an entirely new approach. There was somewhat of an attempt at this in “The Burn” storyline in the series "Star Trek: Discovery" with the sudden act of Dilithium (the element needed for warp drive propulsion) becoming inert and destroying most of Federation starships across the galaxy. This rendered Starfleet and space travel obsolete and on a path of rebuilding the Federation.

The success of The Night Agent is apparently not a one-season phenomenon.
The Netflix thriller recorded its biggest week to date with the opening of its second season. The show amassed 3.11 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Jan. 20-26 (season two premiered Jan. 23), according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings, topping its previous best of 3.06 billion minutes in March 2023.
Nielsen says viewing of season two accounted for 76 percent of the weekly total, which works out to about 2.36 billion minutes.
After making its debut on the streaming charts a week earlier, Apple TV+’s Severance improved a little on that performance with 622 million minutes of viewing (a gain of about 6 percent week to week). That’s the highest weekly total for any Apple TV+ show since Ted Lasso in 2023.

There have been 14 Star Trek films released since 1979. Those films have covered four distinct periods of the franchise while highlighting distinct crews across that time period. We started with William Shatner's James Kirk and the rest of the original series crew for the first six films. Then we jump to Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard and the rest of the core Next Generation cast across the next four. After that, we return to James Kirk but this time featuring Chris Pine and the rest of the aptly named Kelvin crew. Finally, in what is likely a one-and-done situation, Star Trek: Section 31 featured Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou, likely closing out her run with that character.

Time waits for no one, not even the powerhouse franchise that is Star Trek. The franchise continues to roll along, even after the failure of Star Trek: Section 31. The failed made-for-streaming film disappointed across the board, severely impacting future plans for other films of its type. Made-for-streaming films however may be the future of the franchise, whether fans want them or not.
That means that Star Trek needs to try again, and again if they have to. Having an avenue that can generate buzz and interest and continue stories that diehard Star Trek fans want to see is imperative for the further growth and development of the franchise. However, That only happens if we can do this on a relatively tight budget.

Stuart Baird's 2002 film "Star Trek: Nemesis" was one of the franchise's several death knells to come during the early 2000s. "Star Trek: Voyager" came to a close in mid-2001, ending a long-running period of Trek ascendancy. "Star Trek: Enterprise" debuted in late September 2001, and it served as a prequel to the original "Star Trek," set a century before the days of Captain Kirk. It looked different, had a different tone, and aimed to bring Trek to a new generation. Sadly, because of the 9/11 attacks, the world was no longer in the mood for a long-in-the-tooth sci-fi franchise that focused on diplomacy, making peace, and living in harmony. Audiences were now more intent on war, retribution, and violence, and "Star Trek" no longer had a place in the world.
In 2002, "Star Trek: Nemesis" was released to unenthused audiences and low box office receipts. Made for a budget of $60 million, "Nemesis" only earned $67 million worldwide,...

Master Replicas, a UK-based toy company, has, per Trek Core, announced a new licensing deal with Paramount Consumer Products that enables the company to bring the modern Star Trekera to fans in the form of action figures and accessories. Master Replicas tends to be a more affordable option than high-end Exo-6 museum grade replica collectibles.
Also announced, along with the deal, is a whole new line of 4.5” action figures - the same size as the popular Playmates figures from the ‘90s. Master Replicas’ new licensing agreement includes current and past Paramount Trek shows like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy and the new Star Trek: Section 31 Paramount+ film, as well as the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy show.

The overwhelming financial success of "Star Trek" can only be ironic. "Star Trek," after all, takes place in a post-capitalist utopia wherein money has become a thing of the past, and want has been largely defeated. Reallocating resources is easy in the world of "Star Trek," as they have faster-than-light starships that can bring medical supplies to the sick, and matter replicators can instantaneously create food and clothing for the hungry and cold. Here on Earth in the year 2025, however, the makers of "Star Trek" are rolling in gold-pressed latinum. The ubiquity of the popular franchise across multiple streaming platforms has continued to generate huge amounts of revenue for Paramount, its holding company, for the last few years.
The Wrap has reported (via the Parrot Analytics streaming economics platform) that "Star Trek" has — from January 2020 to December 2024 — raked in $2.6 billion worldwide.

In the coming months, we hope to hear news about the next two Star Trek films. We're supposed to get two of them and while neither have official names yet, we've been referring to them as Star Trek 4 and Star Trek: Origins. However, both names will likely be changed in time.
The theatrical films have long been a source of enjoyment for fans, with the series producing more good films than bad. Albeit the film franchise is far from perfect. Still, the last three films were successful to a degree, with it peaking financially with Star Trek 2009, only for things to come crashing back down with Star Trek: Beyond. The latest film in the modern franchise was praised for a lot of reasons, but the trailer did seem to turn off a lot of potential fans before the film even came out.

It’s not every day that you get to boldly go where no one has gone before with the cast of a Star Trek movie. The latest film in the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Section 31, is out now, and we’re about to beam up with the rag-tag crew for an intergalactic heist and campy science-fiction goodness. Ahead of Section 31’s release, I had the pleasure of discussing the new film with two of the film’s leading players: Humberly González and Kacey Rohl, who play Melle and Rachel Garrett, respectively.
While speaking with Humberly and Kacey, we discuss their personal Star Trek history and the thrill of joining the legendary science-fiction franchise. We also discuss Humberly’s opportunity to play characters in the Star Wars, Avatar, and Star Trek universes and whether she’s setting her sights on The Lord of the Rings franchise next. The story of the making of "Star Trek: Discovery" is well-known to Trekkies with a smattering of inside-baseball knowledge. Bryan Fuller was asked to create a new "Star Trek" series by the higher-ups at CBS, and he was eager to do so. He loved "Star Trek," having written scripts for "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: Voyager." He and Alex Kurtzman began assembling a new series, as CBS didn't yet have an idea of what they wanted. Fuller had a novel idea: a "Star Trek" anthology series. He envisioned a series of multiple 10-episode seasons, each one set at a different time within the future history of "Star Trek." The first season would take place shortly before the events of the original "Star Trek," the second would run concurrently with the original "Star Trek," the third during the age of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and so on,...

The following reveals spoilers for Star Trek: Section 31, now streaming on Paramount+.
Star Trek: Section 31 takes place in a very specific point in the franchise's complicated timeline. The early 24th Century, about thirty years' after the end of the original crew's final adventure together, represents a rare blank spot for the producers to take advantage of. Colloquially referred to as "The Lost Era," the era contains just a tiny handful of canon events, leaving it well-positioned for further development. Section 31 has struggled since its release, but its embrace of that potential carries important lessons for Star Trek.

One of the most interesting by-products of the animated workplace comedy Star Trek: Lower Decksis it filled the canon with some wild and unorthodox ideas. The idea of "canon" only existed when writers and archivists in charge of Star Trek in its first ten years tried to organize the universe's many ideas.Because Star Trek canon is anything that appears on screen, Lower Decks has had the opportunity to change it in some major ways.
Taking Star Trek seriously is partly why the universe still exists today and means so much to people. However, Lower Decks empowered writers and fans to laugh at it, too. Even though it was funny and unorthodox, series creator Mike McMahan also deeply respects it. Any changes Lower Decks made to Star Trek canon were done with love and a fan's sensibility. The following reveals spoilers for Star Trek: Section 31, now streaming on Paramount+.
Star Trek: Section 31 is basically a caper film in outer space, with a team assembled under Michelle Yeoh's former Mirror Universe Empress Philippa Georgiou to stop an apocalyptic device from falling into the wrong hands. The movie has great fun with the squad, constituting various little-seen species from the Star Trek franchise, as well as legacy characters like Rachel Garrett in their younger days. That includes a turncoat, working with the villains, and giving the protagonists a mystery to solve before they're betrayed.
In this case, it's literally the smallest member of the group: a sentient parasite named Fuzz controlling a robotic simulacrum of a Vulcan. He stands as one of the film's most original choices, which makes it a reasonably bold choice that he should prove a villain. It also allows actor Sven Ruygrok to continue in the role,...

The following contains light spoilers for Star Trek: Section 31, currently streaming on Paramount+.
There is no studio franchise like Star Trek in terms of its longevity and capacity for storytelling. First created by Gene Roddenberry in 1964, the first series took two years (and two pilot episodes) to debut on television. The most recent release, Star Trek: Section 31, is wildly different from anything that came before it, and as a fan for more than four decades, I believe it's just what this universe needs.
Section 31 is different by design. It tells a story set far outside the reach of the Federation and centers on a motley crew of misfits and outsiders tasked with saving the galaxy. Some have compared it to Star Wars or Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. While the film doesn't "feel like" traditional Star Trek, I'd argue it doesn't feel like anything else either. For better or worse, Star Trek: Section 31 is officially in the books. The final verdict? Maybe the worst piece of property Star Trek has ever produced. It's the truth, as fans, both old and new alike, have rejected this film. Even divisive series like Star Trek: Discovery have a strong, but small, fandom. There are people who will argue in defense of that series.
They'll cite season three as a high point, and with that, one more positive than Section 31 will ever have. That's because there's very little if anything at all redeeming about the film. At least on screen. To such a degree that, while it has some who liked it, the film is universally panned. There's a fan or two across the board who like it, but there isn't a sizeable community like you'd see for Discovery.
So, thankfully, the film is done and no sequel should ever be made.

Star Trek media is soaring to new heights in a medium that other shows and movies can often struggle to find success in. Monetary success on streaming platforms, like Netflix, Prime, and Hulu, is not guaranteed, so the high numbers the Star Trek franchise has been able to amass over the last four years is impressive to say the least. Moving on can be a wonderfully cathartic experience and one that brings peace and joy. This is why I think it's time for Star Trek to move on from Section 31, for good.
Yes, the made-for-streaming movie, Star Trek: Section 31 was bad, and no matter how much you put Michelle Yeoh all over the marketing, that's not going to change things. The film was bad and it wasn't just bad because of the writing and directing; though those played a huge factor. No, the film was bad because its concept, following Section 31 in its early days, was a failed and flawed concept.

Omari Hardwick (Power) and Dana Gourrier (P-Valley) have been cast as leads opposite Jaalen Best in The Greatest, Prime Video’s limited series about the life of Muhammad Ali, from executive producer Michael B. Jordan and executive producer/showrunner Ben Watkins.
The series will feature the defining moments in Ali’s life and career — both in and out of the ring — that have been well documented as well as moments that took place outside the spotlight. The world remembers an icon, but The Greatest is about a man, a husband, a father, a brother, and a son.
Best will play the boxing legend. Hardwick will play his father, Cassius “Cash” Clay Sr. Gourrier will play his mother, Odessa “Bird” Clay.
The Greatest is produced by Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society, which has an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios, Watkins’ Blue Monday Productions, Authentic Studios, Roc Nation, Polygram Entertainment,...

Star Trek: Section 31 remains the biggest debacle of content creation that the franchise has ever created. It is a universally reviled piece of entertainment that fails to appeal to the target audience (non-Star Trek fans), as well as the audience who would still give it a chance (Star Trek fans). It's an absolute waste of money and time.
If you didn't find one good thing in this film, you aren't alone. This film is utterly unwatchable. It's not even a subjective opinion. This is as close to a fact as we can get when we talk about quality in entertainment. There isn't really anyone defending the film and the rare few who do seem to like it in spite of what franchise it's supposed to be from.
Despite all that. Despite its terrible writing, horrible set pieces, and woeful attempts at being something other than Star Trek, there...

John Cena's Matchbox movie has added a third actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to its cast. Corey Stoll, who portrayed Darren Cross/Yellowjacket/M.O.D.O.K. in the Ant-Man movies, has become the latest actor to join Matchbox.
Deadline was the first to report Stoll's casting. At this time, his role remains under wraps. While he is perhaps best known on the big screen for his villainous MCU role, Stoll's film credits include Non-Stop, Driven, First Man, The Many Saints of Newark, West Side Story, and Rebel Moon. The actor also has quite a few prominent credits on the small screen, including starring roles in Law & Order: LA, House of Cards, and Billions. He also recently wrapped opposite Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks on The Better Sister, a new thriller series for Prime Video, based on the novel by Alafair Burke.

Olatune Osunsanmi's new TV movie "Star Trek: Section 31" was originally intended to be a full-blown TV series and a proper spinoff to "Star Trek: Discovery." The show was to follow Michelle Yeoh as the villainous Empress Philippa Georgiou, a bloodthirsty tyrant from another dimension, as she was recruited into a super-secret black-ops organization embedded deeply inside Starfleet. Although the Empress had murdered untold millions of people and regularly ate the flesh of her enemies, she was presented as somewhat sympathetic, having undergone a very mild personal redemption.
Starfleet understood Georgiou was morally bankrupt, but it required her brand of bankruptcy to commit acts of covert terrorism to keep the Federation's utopia maintained. Plans for a "Section 31" TV series stretch back as far as at least 2019. By 2023, however, the "Star Trek" franchise had entered a state of widespread contraction, with most of the property's then-ongoing shows being canceled one after the other.
