A heart touching storyline with a strong message
anshu_09814 December 2020
This movie demonstrated how indian judicial system scrapped a law where widows were forbidden to live like a normal human being. Great storyline, and amazing direction.

Missing the momentum but superb performances
samabc-3195223 January 2021
He is a Michelin-star chef, a judge on MasterChef, cookbook writer and a humanitarian. He is also a writer and this movie is based on his book by the same name. This is Vikas Khanna's directorial debut. A 60+-year old widow, a 9-year old untouchable girl and a transgender..the movie raises the questions about the retrogression that prevail in the most religious city that has a rich culture and history.. I have not read the book but at times it does seem to deviate from its focus... the fragments and scenes do ooze the essence of the storytelling but still do not seemingly fit well into the frames, there are few repetitive and redundant sequences too... However, commendable and subtle performances by Nina Gupta and Aqsa Siddiqui not only manage to keep it afloat but also help upraise ...it was named for academy award ... a good watch..

White for widowhood, pink for liberation from life
madanmarwah7 March 2021
This film speaks of the oppression and suffering faced by a girl child and woman in India. The setting is in the ghats of Varanasi and there are 4 central characters around which the story revolves. The first is an elderly widow Noor ( Neena Gupta) who leads the life traditionally laid out for her doing puja and penance. Next is young wife of a policeman who is regularly physically abused since she cannot bear him a male child. The third is a transgender Anarkali who is used as a sex slave by the policeman even though she resists strongly. Lastly we have a 9 year old motherless girl also called Noor who is friendly with the widow where she gets a much needed affection. This little girl is a tightrope walker. ( A symbolism there ? ). Director Vikas Khanna has made a sensitive film focusing on the plight of these women and the scenes are convincing. He is helped by some superb cinematography and the Varanasi ghats are very well captured. The loneliness , hurt, humiliation and helplessness of these characters have been portrayed well. Acting by all is top class. Neena Gupta is superb as usual.

Most beautiful inde-art
webberzinternational14 December 2020
One of the best Inde-art movie I ever saw. The story of Noor in the backdrop of old Hindu practices is amazing. The way director weaves the story around a real time law is brilliant.

I was fixated to the screen all the time. The captivating story and performance of seasoned star Neena Gupta and new kids will surely make it to Oscars.

A beautiful movie
mbhide9914 December 2020
I saw this movie when it premiered in DC in 2019. It is simply glorious. The quiet strength of Noor is captured beautifully. I wept, I applauded, I prayed and hoped... how many movies can make you experience so many emotions all at once!

Well-done! Cannot wait to see what Vikas Khanna comes out with next.

THOUGHT PROVOKING. MUST WATCH.
MandalBros-510 January 2021
Director Vikas Khanna in his debut film has already won everyone's heart. Now, can't wait to see what Vikas comes out with his next. First of all highly highly recommending everyone to watch this film. This kind of films should be watched by all.

Cinematographer Subhransu Das captured every frame beautifully. BGM is heart touching. This is the best performance of Neena Gupta I've seen till now. The child actor Aqsa Siddique as 'Chhoti' is just brilliant. Her chemistry with Noor is adorable to watch. Rudrani Chhetri as 'Anarkali' is also very good. This is one of those film that can change your thoughts about various things of society. The movie will stay with you for a long period of time.

raises some uncomfortable questions
beevenkat14 December 2020
Vikas Khanna deserves a round of applause. It was so much simpler to make a quintessential love story featuring obnoxious star kids. Instead he chose to create #TheLastColor which raises some uncomfortable questions. Should widows continue to lead an ashen existence in a dilapidated ashram? Should they always don white robes? Should they eat bland food? Are they not allowed to socialize? What prevents them from playing 'holi'? Is it their fault if their husbands died before them? This film needs your love n support, do watch it in theatres. Rating 3.5/5.

Message is very nice. But after you see the movie, lot of things you just keep on wondering how they could have happened and director did not care about showing it.

A rare gem amongst the clutter
diyathelight15 December 2020
The Last Color - This film by first time director Vikas Khanna totally stumped me. I did not have very high expectations from the film but was proved totally wrong. The film touches many aspects of our Society which most of us are not comfortable in discussing. But the Director has put it out there in a subtle way with a positive note. The film talks about the taboo around widows, street children and marginalised communities. The story weaves around these people and how their friendship grows over a period of time. The film is about keeping your promises. Shot in the ghats of Varanasi, you see the city through a different and beautiful lens. Neena Gupta's performance is brilliant backed by the child artist. Overall a must watch for anyone who enjoys meaningful cinema.

Now, go and explore it yourself

KJo and his cronies should learn how to make good movies from Vikas Khanna

Love gives you strength to go beyond your fears
mamtabora24 January 2021
I always loved neena ma'am. She is so natural in the entire movie. The bond between her and the little girl is so moving. I felt worried throughout the movie for the 2 and anarkali. It is so scary for a little girl to survive alone. The treatment a widow gets in backward regions is harsh. These practices should not be allowed, everyone should have a right to live happily. The end was so heart warming. Guys please watch this movie if you believe in realistic cinema.

Best watch for the proponents of Humanism, Existentialism, Individialism, empathy, human rights, Intentional living.
richajan-6159122 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I felt so many things deeply and cried almost throughout. Here are the things I developed deep regard for ( I paused the movie every time I wanted to make a note):

1) After 24 years, chhoti hadn't forgotten those words that left greatest impact on her "they call you untouchable right, you rise so high, scale such heights that these people can't even touch you."

2) 24 years ago, the grit and determination chhoti shown while telling chintu that "we will manage to earn some how just don't get into wrongdoings" reflected her values. World would be so much more beautiful if people are admired for the kind of person they are and not for their community, marital status, gender or any other thing.

3) when bittu's father said that he will make his wife drown into that stepwell and let her die if she doesn't give birth to a male child. I felt deeply moved.

4) when Anarkali told chhoti that you get love as a right, never beg for it. I always wanted to know what kind of struggles transgenders go through. And I knew some of them (prior to watching this film, by reading stories about them) but from this film, I learned one more - that they are fetishized by policemen.

5) How innocently chhoti narrated that Bhura started crying because of not being used to being loved. I could feel her.

6) chhoti presented an analogy that street dogs don't have a name, when that widow asked what's her real mame. This hit me hard.

7) when I saw Noor was being yelled at when she was fondly remembering chhoti. That movie shown how one of those widows was big time into chanting prayers and following traditions but she seemingly forgotten that widows too, are fundamentally a human. She stopped giving rice and dal to noor when she felt that noor didn't belong to her community, where are the basic human rights, I was questioning in my head.

8) when Raja's wife asked for money with so much hesitation, the money that she needed to pay fee of their kids. I was thinking, if she was financially strong and independent, wouldn't her situation be different.

9) The way chhoti bonded with Anarkali and widow, touched my heart.

10) It was not surprising but disappointing to see that in the name of tradition, how noor stopped admiring something as innocent as a color.

11) I loved seeing how chhoti made noor travel back to that time in her mind when she danced like Radha. Noor ate less but she was happier because of the care chhoti shown.

12) When chhoti could build up some confidence to throw a cow dung on that man who wanted to spit on her. The way anarkali tried to hide the reason behind her scars from chhoti. How noor kept Tagore's book with her despite the fact that she didn't know how to read - these scenes filled my heart with a bunch of feelings.

13) When chhoti asked noor why you called me moon what if I had believed you? shown that how important it is to be mindful of what words adults say to kids, and how deeply kids feel.

14) when chhoti was crying after seeing that police threw anarkali into the river, I was imagining how hard it must have been for chhoti to live in so much fear.

15) Family is more than a DNA, this film one again restored my faith in this narrative. The timing - when chhoti found an escape, noor' funeral was being arranged, was also nice.

16) When raja's wife disclosed why she never taken a bath in that stepwell - so that another raja isn't born. This scene was also very telling.

17 How chhoti walked on the rope in the end without any stick in her hand and splashed a color on noor's dead body, to fulfill her promise. This was also brave of her.

18) How chhoti internalized noor's words and lived upto them and changed her name from chhoti to noor.

19) How chintu felt proud of chhoti in the end. Chhoti saw noor too in the end, suggesting that the memories of our loved ones who are dead, remain in hearts forever.

I was happy to learn in the end that Supreme Court passed the orders in 2012, for Upliftment of widows, but I was disappointed at such long wait. I also felt nice when I saw that credits were given to everyone, even the names of 'interns' were shown in the end.

I think I could feel so deeply also because I consider myself an empath (in the sense that I feel others deeply) and visualize myself doing things for the world and its people, especially marginalized people, till the end of my life.

Non realistic Cinema
rahuldev70428 January 2021
With the promising start, movie lost it's credibility by featuring non-existent Indian behaviour. Like a policeman openly abusing and exploiting small Children, small kids are heckled by locals, Hindu bashing. To please the western audience everything featured like how ugly is India and how regressive all the persons around.

This movie has all signatures of western portrayal of India and its people, without even having the slightest touch to reality. They try to create another low budgeted Slumdog Millionaire.

Very beautiful movie!
jayshreepakhuri17 January 2021
It's a beautiful movie. We need to support new comers like Vikas Khanna Sir in this industry. We people are his power because some critics are planning to make it a flop by using their PRs and by giving it a poor IMDb rating and bad reviews. Let's flop their plan together. Give this movie 10 Rating even if you haven't watched it yet because He is not only the best chef but also a very nice human being. His works in challenging times like covid is amazing.

Story of gumption, survival and loss
richasaini-4852724 January 2021
A recommendation- The Last Colour on Prime A great watch with a simple, subtle ,grim and hard hitting tale of a unrelated characters on the banks of holy city- Varanasi. A widow- Noor, an untouchable orphan girl - Choti and her partner in crime -Chintu and a transgender - Anarkali. The story travels through the eyes of Choti and how some tragic and unfortunate incidents lead her to shape her character and personality to become a Supreme Court judge and how she restores the right of transgender and widows and celebrates holi with the widows of Varanasi in the very ghats where she spent her childhood. Must watch for the sheer spirit and survival gumption story by Vikas Khanna

Heart touching.
manigarg000028 January 2021
It is a very beautiful film. It shows the discrimination against people who are thought to be different than most on the basis of their gender, cast etc. and how they are as human as can be probably more. One should definitely watch it.
