To look good and lose weight your life is sucked out! And the champ monster comes alive!
blanbrn2 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode 6 from the "Shudder" series "Creepshow" features two interesting tales with gore and revenge as the stories "Skincrawlers/By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain" are tales that any horror anthology fan would enjoy.

The first tale "Skincrawlers" is a modern tale of wanting to look good, thin and beautiful as in today's culture that's the thing, however like anything else it comes at a high cost. A young hotshot doctor has a new method for weight loss, however it's sticky and a little bit of a blood sucker once the procedure goes inside the stomach. This procedure backfires and the one's who took treatment await a gross and bloody sucked up death! A real shocking twisted tale!

Then "By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain" is set upstate in the area of where the legendary sea creature "Champ" is set to roam. A family who often goes by the lake has memories of sightings as once dad has passed the feelings of the monster becomes stronger only upon the next visit "Champ" comes out to help and so nice as the daughter gets rid of mother's new boyfriend! Overall two good tales with gore, twist, revenge, that was a treat for any horror fan.

Thank goodness for the old-fashioned "Save the best for last" principle!

Like probably several horror fanatics with me, I looked forward the most to the "Creepshow" segment directed by make-up wizard, horror icon and all-around cool bloke Tom Savini. Whether or not deliberately, the producers kept us waiting until the last segment of the very last episode. Was Savini's contribution worth the wait? Probably not, but it was a likeable and charming homage to sea/lake monster B-movies (type "Monstroid", "The Crater Lake Monster", "The Loch Ness Horror", ...). The biggest and most pleasant surprise of the entire season, however, came whilst waiting for Savini's tale!

"Skincrawlers", the second story directed by Roxanne Benjamin (following the strictly average "Lydia Layne's Better Half"), unexpectedly turned out the best and most entertaining one of the whole show! Obnoxious TV-doctor Sloan discovered the ultimate breakthrough in battling overweight, namely with rare South American leeches that suck the fat straight out of obese people. Just when the reluctant patient Henry Quayle is about to give a demonstration on nationwide television, there's a solar eclipse to which the little creatures react rather ... psychotic. The short tale is delightfully over-the-top, with extreme gore and nasty monster transformations. The make-up effects are insanely gooey, with a sublime tongue-in-cheek tribute to classic scene of "Alien".

I knew what skincrawlers was about before i watched it and immediately knew it would be great and it did not disappoint. The suspense and horror is on point and the same goes for By the silver water of lake Champlain

Scariest Thing? That This Episode Made it to Air
jadgrace-181625 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Aside from the antagonist stepfather, the acting is sub par, that's being polite, and the script was even worse. The dead creature is 3 feet in front of the boyfriend and when he's told it's "Champ", he'd rather believe it's a "messed-up whale"? Definitely the worst episode so far. If this episode begins, just press that little arrow pointing to the right on your remote. You're welcome.

Champi doesn't make sense at all!

Warning: Spoilers
I am not the person to write reviews but the second segment, "the Silver Water of Lake Champlain" urges me to write one.

The story has so many logical holes that I'm sure I'm forgetting to mention half of them.

First, the girl takes *two* photos, the second of which is destroyed by her nitwit stepfather. Why doesn't she show the first one to prove her point?

Then, when her brother goes to get their mother, it seems that they don't live more than a couple of hundred feet from the lake. You can hear people by the lake talking when him and his mother are standing right in their yard. Yet they don't hear that big ass dinosaur roar? Oh please!

And what about the proof that the mother wants that nobody seems to be able to give her when they're all at the lake? Doesn't a puddle of blood suffice or do they need for the second dinosaur to come back for a second photo shoot?

I usually enjoy the Creepshow episodes - as long as they make a little sense. This one fails to do so.

Terrible writing

Warning: Spoilers
In the Lake Champlain segment, why did the writers even bother giving Rose a camera if she was only going to take ONE SINGLE PICTURE? She seriously had SEVERAL opportunities to take multiple pictures before her mother's boyfriend showed up, and plenty more after the 2nd monster ate the guy. Yet, she only took ONE picture that got destroyed. Good job, writers!

Headline: KNOCK OFF ANTHOLOGY HORROR SHOW KILLS SELF IN FRONT OF 50 WITNESSES

Warning: Spoilers
Headline from the day after this originally broadcast: "KNOCK OFF ANTHOLOGY HORROR SHOW KILLS SELF IN FRONT OF 50 WITNESSES"

This last episode proved Nicotero simply doesn't understand the genre. Horror needs new blood I guess, cos the old guard is too rich to bother trying to understand how families, young people, or POC think. Like, broh, do better.
