Serviceable enough as is but not really much else

Warning: Spoilers
While filming a near episode, the team for a cryptozoological and paranormal reality series head into the woods to get the scoop on their latest episode about a strange box buried in a local mine, but when they arrive discover that something far deadlier is lurking in the woods for them.

This was a pretty serviceable if unremarkable found-footage effort. Starting out like numerous other entries in the format with the introduction to the team getting to the house for their next story, that this one goes into an even more familiar route involving the typical backwoods personalities with the questionable informant that creeps everyone out, the town of locals offering friendly warnings to stay away through stories of questionable logic, and the setup of the group intending to look into the history of a piece of folklore that's covering up a deadlier truth are brought up rather early in this one. This gives the film a rather solid background into their quest out into the woods but also doesn't bring anything new or original into the genre. With this build-up employed quite nicely, there's some genuine fun and creepiness to be had once they get to the woods to finalize their plans for the documentary. The scenes involving him trying to get everyone to follow his plan of trying to push forward towards the deepest part of the woods where the stories bring about a series of generally enjoyable confrontations with them out in the middle of nowhere are inherently fun and somewhat chilling. The descent into the underground tunnel and the chaos that unfolds once they get down there as well as the interactions once the discovery in the cave has been unleashed are solid enough with some interesting ideas and concepts being utilized taking place throughout the woods. It's what makes this one a bit better than expected here. There are some big issues to be had here. The aforementioned overall familiarity with the series of genre tropes utilized here is the main issue, but the next one is the utterly unlikable main character that's part of the usual tropes and expectations found in the style. All he does is constantly force others into dangerous situations without any hint of personal safety merely for personal glory and forsakes everyone else to continue on that path. Hardly any of it makes for a compelling time following him or the group. More problems emerge from the night-time found-footage camera work that renders a lot of what's going on way too difficult to see what's happening which is rather unfortunate due to this being the best part of the film where you want to see what's happening. These factors all bring this one down.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language and Violence.

Decent but nothing new
thedarkestshadow-3278520 August 2023
Just gonna say this now: The majority of the cast has decent acting skills. Marissa Kaye, however, is downright terrible. Easily the worst part of the movie. Even her facial expressions are fake as hell. She must be related to or in a relationship with someone on the crew. She really drags the movie down every time she opens her mouth or tries to convey emotions.

Sarah VanArsdal is the best. I gave this two extra stars just for her. She's gorgeous and probably one of the better actors.

The story is nothing new. A group of people go into the woods poking around where they shouldn't and ignore all the warnings of the locals and the warning signs in the area.

I'd say it's worth a watch once.

Bumbling, amateurish clichè...
Barebower20 March 2023
You've seen this 'movie' a thousand times before.

There isn't one shred of originality in the 'movie'. Every horror story clichè is trotted out again by largely talentless actors performing a largely talentless script in front of a largely talentless director whose film has been cut together by largely talentless editors... The storyline is completely incoherent and you get the feeling that some actors left the set at various points... probably because their pay cheques bounced... or they just got bored.

Nothing worthwhile has been added to world as a result of this 'film' having been made...

What happened to this movie?

Watched this one on you tube last night and came away thinking that I did enjoy it until they actually found the chest, this is what the movie is meant to be about.

Once they found the chest, this film went down hip very fast, in fact the movie became stupid and ruined the movie.

Usually films are the other way round, they are boring before the title of the film happens and then get better but this time it was the other way round.

I was enjoying the film more than I thought I would until they found the chest and then as I stated above the film went down hill and stupid.

I am a a little stuck a what star rating to give this movie but as I enjoyed it up until they found the chest I am going to give this a three star rating.

I would overall though not recommend this film. A total let down and let me just say, I know this movie was made cheaply but interviewing the suspect in what looked like an abandoned building was just laughable. And the ending itself was so bad, yes it was that bad, I can't put into words.

So overall a great start to the film but twenty minutes from the end the film was ruined.
