Dwighty Boy's Back
ninjaboyballer17 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This for is me is easily the best out of the first 3 episodes so far. It's more fast paced then the first 2 and had the return of another familiar face we haven't seen in a while: Dwight. He is for me honestly the best part about this episode. Austin Amelio is a great actor who can show so much just by the look on his face and his struggle feels real, having not been able to find his wife Sherry since the end of season 8 of the walking dead. And John and June's interaction with him is a great one which is not only entertaining but also drives Dwight forward in his journey, having that talk on the walkie with John and June. I also enjoyed the stuff with Luciana, Alicia, and Morgan, but I felt like they didn't have enough of it in the episode. What I really liked was Morgan and Dwight's little exchange at the end. Even though I don't think they met on the walking dead, they must have heard of each other. I can't wait to see what's up the people who took Rick and the kids too. I just wish we could see what is going on with Logan and Charlie back at their place and with Daniel and Strand. But it looks like we'll be getting that next episode, so can't complain.

Overall, this is the best episode so far for me this season with good character moments and a solid return for Dwight.

Final rating: 8.2/10

Still going strong

Warning: Spoilers
Aren't walking dead fans the worst? Never happy when its character driven and slow paced and when it's inventive and zombie heavy they still rag on it. Fear has surpassed the orignal and continues to be very good. Yes its a bit far fetched but it definitely beats the find a safe haven, have safe haven threatened by evil humans, repeat formula that has been going on for 7 seasons with Rick and co and caused it to become a snoozefest. More of this please

Fun, zombie bashing thrills.

Fear the Walking Dead

Episode 5.03 (4 out of 5 stars).

The episode delivers heart pounding zombie thriller. With the characters still searching for Maggie Grace's character. John and June get stuck in a small town infested with undead as they meet an unexpected return from Dwight. Who is on the search for his wife. It is fun to see the characters interact. There is lots of action. And a mysterious motive from the villains that have the undead tied up and blocking roads using the intestine. Which is disturbing and gory but hopefully foreshadowing for something more to come.

Well directed and incredible episode with great character development and memorable moments with a well done crossover
Holt34417 June 2019
There haven't been a single bad episode yet and this is again a great episode which is directed by Colman Domingo who plays Victor Strand and he did a phenomenal job at this episode, having improved a lot since last season. The episode is full with emotion, good drama and character development, western vibes and amazing sets. The zombie kills with the Western Era guns was entertaining and a dream come true for me as a big western fan, even the silly but cool San Antonio Split which I understand people hate about but it was incredible in the way that it was intended, a nice zombie kill.

The ensemble cast was great in this episode, focusing on Morgan's crew that is currently on the road trying to help the kids but John Dorie and June ultimately finds the crossover character Dwight in the western town that they have teased, three of the six of my favorite characters on Fear is together and the trio didn't disappoint, chemistry on screen and behind the scenes. Great reintroduction and it gave the character justice, giving him a bigger and personal role which can lead to some interesting and exciting character development which makes me look forward to what the showrunners has in store for the character. It was an incredible episode and overall stand-alone experience, similar to episode 4.01 and 4.05 as we follow almost only John Dorie and June but they mixed the other scenes perfectly with the episode, great editing.

Undead Nightmare, SPOILERS!!
Nick6315516 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Just kidding... but the reason why I bring it up is because we get to see John Dorie go full on cowboy against walkers with (his partner) Dwight and his lover June. So it was a great introduction to Dwight in the Fear series where he's still on his mission to find his lost wife Sherry. As he begins to lose hope and just want to go the easy way out, John and June come to his aid. The western vibes were really cool as they were very frequent throughout the episode giving walking dead universe something new and exciting. I see this season potentially being one of the best ones but I still have a bit low expectations only because of season 4b but anything can happen. Can't wait to see Daniel again!

Ashley Cardiff knows how to write a good episode.
Rob-O-Cop25 June 2019
Finally they lucked on a good writer who knows how to construct a story and make it entertaining. We've still got the paid reviewers in here but they look like they might be up for unemployment if they keep Ashley on as series writer. No need for fake high score reviews when they deliver like this episode does. John Dorie center story, delivering some great throw away lines. san antonio split, only the second time he's pulled it off etc, and the western theme, an obvious winner I mentioned way back in my review from Dorie's first appearance. We love the cowboy mystique and why no writer bothered to pull this through to the screen in the last season shows how inept last seasons writers were in general. I'm going to go ahead and assume Ashley read my suggestion of focusing on this and incorporated it in her winning approach. She's not here to say she didn't so we'll leave it as fact until she challenges it personally. Great to see Dwight back again, and delivering some serious deep thought and emotional content aimed for our brains and not zombies. No one else was too annoying which has been a common problem, we don't need to have the story cluttered up with stupid and annoying parts just to fill up an episode, Ashley show's there's plenty of decent content to fill the time. Ashley mercifully didn't use the annoying trope of smart people doing stupid things to move the script along (ok Dwight jumping off the roof etc, but that's nothing compared to what we've had to put up with), and some touching well paced character moments. I see Ashley is listed as writing a large chunk of this season. eps 1-8,10, and 16. Let's hope who ever fills in the gaps doesn't blow it. I fear ep 9 and11-15, till we see who writes them.

You've got my attention, please use it wisely.

Warning: Spoilers
5x3 rating: 8.5/10

Storyline: The group kills several walker barriers on different roadblocks in an attempt to find Althea as they cross off circles on a map, forming a perimeter.

On the road, John and June drive out of walkie range and find another walker roadblock. They approach it and immediately come under fire, forcing them to retreat in their van and drive through the barrier. They arrive at a ranch called Humbug's Gulch, which John says it's similar to his old stomping grounds and claims they can find guns there. They make their way inside one of the buildings and find a locker full of guns and ammunition.

Elsewhere, Luciana finishes marking the locations on their map. Alicia apologizes to her about her injury, but Luciana says she doesn't feel bad about it. Alicia then overhears the kids talking over the radio, with Dylan giving away their location. She tries to talk to them but the feed cuts off and they decide they need to find them.

Back in the Gulch, John and June go outside in the middle of a windstorm so they can return to the van. Suddenly, a stranger approaches and starts shooting at them, causing them to retreat. He shoots one some of the tires but John clips the stranger with his gun. John runs over to find him and is held at gunpoint by Dwight. "Where is she?!" Dwight demands but is knocked out by June from behind.

Inside the building, they tie Dwight and rummage his stuff, finding maps from other states and notes from Sherry. June treats Dwight's gunshot wound as he finally wakes up. He yells for John to put down Sherry's notes and John tells him they just want to help him. He insists no one can help him. John asks about the walker blockades but doesn't get an answer.

On the road, Alicia and Luciana pop a tire and swerve into a ditch. They investigate and find makeshift spikes laid out on the road.

Meanwhile, John and June barricade the doors with furniture and decide to head to the roof and get out of the town on foot. Dwight offers them his car but they insist he will come with them. He finally reveals that his name is Dwight and tells them about his mission to find his wife. They shake hands as John introduces himself and June. Dwight laughs at their names and John finally unties him.

The walkers break into the bar as they escape out the second-floor window. However, Dwight jumps from the roof, forcing them to follow him. He reveals to John that he calls the dead "walkers" and they make an effort to get away. They start making their way to the car but Dwight goes the other way. He makes a break for their van, frantically searching through the glove box.

Dwight scans at a car registration with Sherry's forever symbol on it and a message to go "West on 30". He radios John and June to explain how Sherry has been leaving him messages for him in her travels and how he thought he'd find the next one in the car, but there isn't one. "I've been looking for Sherry for, I don't know, at least a year", he says. June ultimately tells Dwight they found the van without anyone alive in it but offers hope that Sherry could be alive.

Dwight explains that he doesn't deserve to find Sherry. "I'm never going to find her", he bemoans as he cocks his gun. June tries talking him out of killing himself, saying Sherry is still out there and that he can't do this to her. Dwight lays down his gun and sobs, telling them he can't get back to them. John says to leave that up to them.

Meanwhile, Morgan catches up with Alicia and Luciana on the road and encourages them to keep trying to contact the kids. Alicia radios them again and tells them about losing her mother and how she relates to them. They don't receive a response, so they head out.

Back at the Gulch, John shoots most of the walkers, leaving Dwight a path to finally escape. He barely makes it out before being tackled by a walker. On the ground, John tells him to raise his axe, and John shoots it, causing the bullets to split and kill two walkers at once.

That night, John explains to Dwight that the number from the car doesn't match the registration, meaning Sherry could still be out there. He then thanks June for talking Dwight off the ledge and confesses it made him reconsider how he was showing his love for her. They hug and kiss.

Suddenly, Morgan, Alicia, and Luciana arrive at the town. Dwight walks up and calls out to Morgan. They are shocked to see each other and Morgan explains they come from the same place. Dwight explains his mission and tries apologizing for what happened with the Saviors, but Morgan assures him they can talk later. "We're trying to start over", Morgan explains. Alicia asks Dwight about the walker barricades, so Dwight takes them to one.

On a roadblock, the group is about to take it down when Max radios Alicia and says they're headed to the truck stop. On the way, they find a van stalled on the road. Inside, they find a bloody Dylan crying in the backseat. Alicia tries calming him and asks where Max and Annie are, but he won't answer.

Elsewhere, Annie and Max set up another roadblock and discuss how they left the trap for the group to make sure they never get bothered again.

Far Fetched Cowboy Gunslinger Action
scottmannen122 June 2019
This episode is entertaining, it's the third episode into the season and they have all been good episodes! They must have fired last season's writers and replaced them with some good ones because they have essentially pulled this show out of the chess pool that it has been drowning in ever since they killed off the main characters!

Splitting a bullet up the middle and each half of the bullet killing a zombie is ridiculously far fetched, but I don't really care if they make this show a little crazy like Z Nation! The majority of the plot has slowly moved forwards letting us know that the children are the ones behind the zombie borders and heads on spikes. Those evil kids are up to no good and are likely going to try to kill the group, but I am sure that they will screw it up and the group will somehow have to save their lives.

I rate this episode 7/10 and it's worth the watch. I didn't care much for Dwight showing up only to spill his emotional guts all over the silver screen. Now that everyone is done crying over Dwights sad tragedy of a wife story and how he is chasing her, we move on to see the entire forest has zombies chained up everywhere, but they have to deal with these pesky kids before they do anything, and it's cleark some kin$ of trap.

S5.E3 - Nice to see you Dwight [7/10]
panagiotis19933 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S5. E3) My Reaction / Review for Fear The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 3 ''Humbug's Gulch'': Episode 2 was mediocre and I gave it a rating of 6.5/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. The team is still not together, that sucks. I wish they would show us where they find food and water to make the whole thing more realistic but they don't. I guess food and water magically appears to them. Who is shooting at John and June? Is that Dwight? Now that's a crossover. Some cool action scenes with Dwight and John. It's sad that Dwight cant find his wife. They should stop using guns so much, it will get the attention of the walkers. So now we have kids as villains? So dumb! Overall a decent episode, my rating is 7/10.

The episode effectively uses the setting of Humbug's Gulch to drive its narrative, blending Western genre elements with zombie fiction to create a unique viewing experience
fernandoschiavi22 April 2024
John and June take shelter in Humbug's Gulch, a ghost town that once acted as a theme park attraction similar to the one John once worked at. They encounter Dwight, a man desperate to find his wife Sherry. After convincing him that they are not a threat, he agrees help them get passed the Walkers. Dwight, trapped in a car, soon contemplates suicide after believing he'll find his wife until June talks him out of it. The trio escape and find Morgan where they learn Dwight and him know each other from Virginia. Later, the group finds a bloodied Dylan while Max and Annie set up another walker roadblock and plot to use Dylan to find out why Morgan's group is in the area before making sure they are not a threat to them.

Season 5, Episode 3 of "Fear the Walking Dead," titled "Humbug's Gulch," plunges viewers into a setting that's both nostalgic and eerie - an abandoned Wild West theme park. This backdrop serves as more than just a location; it encapsulates the idea of the Old West's lawlessness mirrored in the post-apocalyptic world the characters are surviving. John Dorie and June find themselves trapped here, navigating both the physical and emotional terrain of their past and present lives.

The episode effectively uses the setting of Humbug's Gulch to drive its narrative, blending Western genre elements with zombie fiction to create a unique viewing experience. The dust and decay of the theme park reflect the desolation and degradation of the world around them. The highlight is undoubtedly John Dorie's gunslinging skills, which are not only pivotal in their survival but also pay homage to classic Western films, providing a thrilling spectacle amidst the bleakness.

Throughout the episode, themes of trust, redemption, and survival are explored. John and June's relationship undergoes further development as they confront the fears and insecurities brought on by their precarious environment. Their conversations, filled with vulnerability and revelations about their pasts, add depth to their characters and underscore the human emotions at play, even in a world overrun by the undead.

In conclusion, "Humbug's Gulch" stands out for its clever integration of Western motifs into the series' established narrative, offering viewers both excitement and introspection. However, while the episode excels in atmosphere and character development, it occasionally lapses into predictability with its plot progression. Nonetheless, it maintains the season's momentum, continuing to challenge its characters while engaging and expanding its audience's understanding of their motivations and fears. The eerie replication of a world gone by, contrasted with the stark reality of their current world, allows "Fear the Walking Dead" to keep redefining its boundaries within the genre.

It was nice to see you DWIGHT
eberkerbatur1 July 2019
My favorite event of this episode was definitely DWIGHT to be included in the series I think even in very good places TWD was a character. I think it will stay in this series for a long time because it is a remarkable character. but the scene in the car was really bad I didn't understand how the zombies couldn't get into the car with the rear window open. The episode was not good overall but I think you would come to good places player quality started to improve.

Splitting a bullet?

Really? That's Z Nation stuff without it being actually funny. Ah, and an overly complicated scheme by the kids just to know what they want? They already told you.

Fear the Walking Soap Opera! The Z Team Strikes Again. These characters are too stupid to realize how stupid they are.
Bababooe17 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
They're too dumb to help anybody, including themselves.

The dumbest part of this episode is when Lucy and Alyc are having a little conversation while driving. Alyc says something to the effect that she's sorry for the plane crash. Lucy, says she's not. Let's not forget Lucy was impaled (Vlad III), she's not only not dead but walking around. Don't worry it's just a scratch. Maybe she's too stupid to realize that she's already dead. She should be dead from the blood loss alone. How is she in any shape to walk around? No, she's not sorry. She asks after a plane crash, what could happen to them? How about getting eaten by zombies, or killed by bad people, or killed by the stupidity of jumping onto another airplane with someone who doesn't know how to fly a plane? You ever jump in a car with a new driver that maybe is overconfident, and arrogant, and hits the highway speeding? I hope not. That's how stupid these people are. For what, to help people. How about helping themselves? These people are too stupid to realize they are stupid.

And we are stupid for watching. I find the ridiculousness too much to even laugh at.

We get the Cowboy Couple (John Wayne Dorie and Nurse June) hitting an old west town. They get shot at by Dwight. At least Dwight does a great Rick impression, low voice, head tilted to the side. Problem is he shoots at them. They shoot him and help him inside to safety and patch him up. Cowboy Couple just happened to be riding in Dwight's wife's car. They become friends. After some zombie attack, Dwight is in his wife's car and is suicidal. Nurse June on the walkie talks him down. So much nonsense. We later get a bullet split from John Wayne. Just cliché garbage.

Lucy and Alyc crash the car. Morgy the Savior finds them and they head into Wild West Town, and find Cowboy Couple and Dwight. And here my friends is some of the lamest acting I've seen ever. Ever. Dwight walks out of a building, Morgy sees him, and double takes. He sees Dwight, turns his head, and looks back at him again. Incredible garbage writing. Then Dwight wants to explain his bad ways. Morgy says no need.

Yes, Morgy needs no explanation. And neither do we. This show just throws garbage after garbage.

First off, the Cowboy Couple should have killed Dwight. That's realistic. Someone shoots at you, you kill them, not patch them up. When Rick and Morgy gave their word to the Hilltop Savior Prisoners then backstabbed them. That showed how bad they could be. It's not nice but at least it was plausible. Here we have implausible.

At least we didn't see Vic Strand and his BS, Oh hey, I know you don't like me, but can I borrow your airplane that I don't know how to fly and I'll bring it right back. Or Fashionable Haircut Al SWAT Commander Videographer, going on her own endangering herself, and others trying to find her. Or the Trucker Twins, Wheelchair and His Sista still hanging around for who knows what. Or Backstab Charlie, redemption project, adopted daughter of Cowboy Couple.

Is it too much to ask for plausibility?

Worst episode of the Fear series...
kattringo17 June 2019
Boring, lame and I thought I was watching a soap opera. How is anyone watching this show and giving it 8 stars? Oh and now we know how Garret made his cameo in the Deadwood movie. How is this series still on? Ever since getting rid of Kim Dickens' character the show has gone downhill. She was the reason I started watching in the first place and now well it's completely over for me. No more watching this crap of a show. Still can't believe how bad this episode was. Bad writing, worse directing and just all around awful. Good bye walking dead franchise. I hope you put all of us out of our misery soon and cancel both of these shows.
