Not Bad
bgautham15 August 2019
I liked this Director's Sudheer Varma's previous movies specially "Swamy Ra Ra" and "Dohchay", in this movie Ranarangam, Director did a mistake of taking back and forth with Present and Past scenes too often, Sharvanand is a very good actor and the Director used him well in this movie and could have done more, songs are not so good, Action scenes he could have done more.... 6 Stars because i also like Godfather type of movies!

A stylish and violent gangster flick

7/10

Plot: A ruthless and powerful gangster makes a new enemy over a 1500 crore land deal. As he tries to deal with the situation an old enemy resurfaces.

The film starts in present day Spain. We see that our protagonist Deva is a powerful man who is feared by others. After 10min the film goes back to the past where he started his career in crime and met the love of his life. After 30min or so we are back in present, this back and forth between past and present continues till the ultimate climax.

First 35min is unnecessary. The real part of the film begins after the first 35 minutes. I only heard and later watched the film because of Kajal Aggarwal. Sadly she does not have much screen time. And her role did not have much to work with but I still liked what little screen time she had. Most of the actors and actresses did a great job and in terms of acting this is a polished and well-made film. Ranarangam takes itself seriously. I was afraid that it would lose its pace but till the end Ranarangam kept its integrity. The director wanted to make a serious piece of gangster drama and he did it.

The best part of the film is it's commitment to violence. There were lots of head shots, bloods and violent deaths. Some were hard to watch. There were few scenes that looked like it came straight out of a graphic novel. The film looks sleek especially the present day scenarios.

With this kind of story I think the lead actor was a bad cast. Nothing wrong with his acting, he did great in his role. Lots of swag and mass appeal is expected to pull off a character like Deva which Sharwanand lacks. Kabali had Rajinikanth, Raees had SRK and Sarkar had Amitabh Bachchan. All things being same if a mass star was cast, Ranarangam would have fared better.

This is a violent gangster flick with strong acting. Ranarangam starts slow and gets better than loses its way again. But finds its way in last 30 min. I liked the climax. Though I expected the twist but not entirely. There are some cool moments that makes up for its long run time and lack of emotional connection with viewers.

#Ranarangam

Okish 1st half with Teriffic BGM by @iprashantpillai. Unnecessary songs & few sence and dragged 1st half # Ranarangam Didn't reached the expectations (average)

Routine story easily predictable and too slow story naration which irrirates a lot in 2nd half. #Sharwanand rocked in aged & young gangster. @kalyanipriyan steals the show. @MsKajalAggarwal is jst okay.

Disappointing gangster movie
maestromanohar18 August 2019
The movie was predictable right from the start. Sharwanand was good as past rowdy but bit odd as a modern gangster. Kalyani was decent and Kajal was completely wasted. The screenplay was devoid of any twists ,making it bore to watch. Also, back and forth of timeline was a big mistake as didn't create any impact on the outcome of the movie. Music, Cinematography is decent, production values were apt and editing could have been better. Overall, disappointed.

Underrated movie
atj-1932026 February 2021
It's an entertaining movie for sure. I like the directors movies in general, so this was pretty good. Cinematography is next level, really. Like, u can watch the movie solely for the visuals itself, that's how good it is. Sharwa acting is always good. Action is good. Screenplay is good. BGM is amazing. Backdrop is really well done as well. Won't feel bore. Overall it's a nice watch

Super screenplay and excellent performance
asinmoviecreations16 August 2019
The director has chosen back and forth narration which I liked personally. The flashback version is portrayed very nicely. Stylish taking of the shots is very much a Sudheer's mark. These so called critics from websites are corrupting/scarring the directors in expressing their thought freely. I have seen interviews of Sudheer who is very honest and genuine in accepting the reality. It looks like Sudheer has not yet fallen to this trap of fear from these paid critics from websites.

RANARANGAM REVIEW
Magow-Intermean24 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Ranarangam is a film that's not hard to describe, plain and simple, it's the story of a gangster who rises to power and ends up making numerous enemies along the way. The difficult part is when it comes to moving past all that mind-bending swag the film has on full-display and realising it's nothing but the same old liquor in a shiny new bottle. This is not the kind of film you go to for its unique story that will surprise you with its twists and turns, it's the kind of film that allows you to soak in its mindless beauty much before you realise it's heading in a completely predictable direction. Deva (Sharwanand) is a rich man living in Spain, busy being a single father to a teen he dotes on. Despite keeping a promise he made years ago, he leaves some loose threads dangling and his past soon comes to haunt him. Ranarangam keeps switching between his past in Visakhapatnam and present, not always nailing the transition. Deva was once a black movie ticket seller who's aided by his friends (Raja Chembolu, Aadarsh Balakrishna, Sudhardhan). He decides to take advantage of the liquor prohibition imposed on the state under the NTR regime, smuggling in alcohol from Odisha in innovative ways and selling them for a profit. He also falls heads-over-heels for Geeta (Kalyani Priyadarshan), whom he tells the truth of his profession. Ranarangam packs in even more characters played by Ajay, Brahmaji and more. Kajal Aggarwal too exists in this tale for no reason, while Murli Sharma breezes through and brings some delightful nuance to his role of the token antagonist. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, time for the nitty-gritty. While Sharwanand and Kalyani Priyadarshan pour life into their roles and give it their all, Kajal Aggarwal has very limited scope to perform, the ones seemingly having the most fun in the film seem to be director Sudheer Varma, cinematographer Divakar Mani, stunt coordinator Venkat, music director Prashant Pillai and dialogue writers Arjun-Carthyk. The colour red tinges numerous scenes, lending not just a jagged kind of beauty, but also an atmosphere that makes one feel like they're watching a home-grown neo-noir film a la Sin City. The colours and frames used also remind one of a graphic novel, almost as if Sudheer and Divakar hand-painted the whole film together. Prashant Pillai's music is a delight but his BGM elevates many key scenes. Thanks to these intricacies, the film manages to stay with you despite the frustrating narrative which never allows you to truly connect to the characters. The dialogues by Arjun-Carthyk too don't end up being overtly melodramatic and hit just the right note. This is where Ranarangam truly shines.
