Sex & Nudity

  • A character looks at and is called out for looking at a female character's breasts multiple times. Used comedically.
  • It is referenced that a young character is being paid by a man to commit sexual acts, although it is interrupted before anything happens. This can be confronting for some.
  • Two boys take a bath together in a hotel (this is Japanese tradition, so no sexuality or nudity of any kind), shoulders and heads are shown but everything else is obstructed by water. A girl then goes into the bath alone, showing bare shoulders and her head as well. Scenes are foggy and short, non-sexual.
  • A young boy is shown flirting with two young girls in quick succession on a bus; used comedically.
  • A young boy and young girl remove their clothes together as they are swapping their outfits (cuts away as they are changing, nothing shown).
  • Several men try to get a young girl to join their sex club

Violence & Gore

  • A character finds a gun in a paper bag after knocking over a rubbish bin. The gun is shot twice but never hits anyone.
  • Police are shown forcing younger characters to the floor, a boy is slapped by two different men, a boy bites an adult's arms, a boy is held to the ground and is punched causing a bruise, multiple characters aim guns at each other, a boy is shown with bandages and patches from injuries, a man tackles another man and punches him, a little kid knocks over an adult and people fall from heights multiple times. Overall, violence is infrequent, but it is realistic and can be brutal.
  • A boy has a deep cut on his face, dripping blood as he runs.
  • Lightning strikes a truck, causing it to explode.

Profanity

  • Bullshit and bastard are said twice each, some minor obscenities, nothing too vulgar.
  • "Goddamn" is used

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Characters are seen smoking and drinking multiple times. One character is passed out and is awoken by another.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • In the beginning of the film we see a young girl in a hospital with a patient in a bed who is using multiple breathing apparatuses and other medical devices. Can be confronting for some.
  • Overall, this movie is increasingly intense and emotional, not scary but can be confronting and hard to watch.
  • There are scenes where a dark side of a developed city is shown. This may be too serious for kids to know. There are some assault scenes too, nothing too serious.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • Hina removes her robe in front of Hodaka while inside a hotel room, showing her shoulder and chest, although her chest is transparent. No nudity is shown, but can be surprising.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Mr. Suga is recovering from a nicotine addiction throughout the film, but he eventually breaks a cigarette in half and disposes of the pack.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A boy finds a girl who is being taken by a man who intends to sexually assault her, the boy intervenes and they run, the man catches up and forces the boy to the concrete and hits him multiple times. The man says he payed for the services and the boy pulls out a pistol and fires it into the air. The man loosens his grip and the boy and girl run.
  • Hina confronts Hodaka in a hotel that she is dying. Every time she makes the rain go away a part of her disappears. She explains she will sacrifice herself for the weather to forever be clear and both cry immensely. They hug and sleep and Hina suddenly disappears. This is one of the most intense and emotional scenes in the film, very shocking.
  • Hodaka is teleported into the sky and is seen flailing searching for Hina. He cries and screams for her. This may be emotional for some.
  • The third act is very intense, as it features the main characters running from the police. This is where most of the emotion and drama occurs, which greatly contrasts the comedic and lighthearted first and second act. The last act can make viewers feel hopeless, but the act also has a great deal of catharsis.
