Since the movie is all about complex programming and its manipulation, its title alludes to the "Hello World" program which is often used to represent the basic syntax of a programming language.

Warning: Spoilers
No matter how bad the world breaks, I just want to see you. I use ten years to save you in the dream, you use ten years to wait for me in reality, love is so. Like each other, save each other, redeem each other, each time and space of their own are from the pain to maturity, and then because of the maturity of happiness. Really like this kind of drama, sometimes clearly feel their efforts are not useful, but in unexpected places.

It can be better
sonicz-2120920 April 2020
You must watch the 3 episodes before the movie to understand what's happened and why . The first half was good but the problem is that they tried to show alot of things related to quantum physics, and the last quarter was too complicated and not very stable. Nice movie but not great one.

Hello to you as well
Horst_In_Translation28 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
"Hello World" is an award-nominated Japanese animation movie (i.e. Anime) from 2019, so this one is not super new anymore, but still relatively new. It runs for briefly under 100 minutes, so you could say the same there again that it is not a super long movie, but also not too short. I remember this was shown here at one of my regular movie theaters in summer, but I did not watch it there, so this time it was a good occasion to catch it on the small screen two days ago. Overall, I was glad I watched. The director is award-winning filmmaker Tomohikô Ito who launched his career approximately 15 years ago with the television series "Death Note" that was such a triumph and is still appreciated by many. Quite a way to get going. He stayed for a while with television series, then also worked on television movies before he finally made the transition to the big screen and if I see it correctly, then this one here was his second theatrical feature film release. The first was from 2017. The writer is Mado Nozaki. Not too many information to be found there. I see only one other credit for a television series, but it was not one that Ito worked on as well, so that the connection happened there, but looks like they did not know each other before this project here. Good for Nozaki though if the second career project (if the listing on imdb is correct) is a film like this here. Quite some prestige to it, even if it did not score any award wins apparently, but at least a couple nominations. I am sure that Ito will sooner or later be able to add more award wins to the one that already happened by now. I cannot say anything really about the voice actors because I watched the German dub, but the quality there was relatively nice overall I would say. Dubbing has really become so good in recent years. Not only in animation, but also with foreign films. At least here in Germany. I have stepped away from restricting myself to only seeing original versions a long time ago.

Now let's talk about the film at hand here though: There is a great deal of drama here, lots of science fiction and at the center of it all the romance element is dominant. Here and there, we also get a dose of comedy, but it is really nothing too common at all. Pretty much the way it is handled usually with anime movies as none of them are ever comedies, but they do get in a few inclusions that will make you smile or even laugh. One good example of that is at the beginning when we see the male protagonist and how he is asked by some other students if he wants to come with them to a karaoke event. His reaction was quite funny and about the same how I would react as well. Then there is of course the scene in which some dirty magazines fall out of a drawer or so and this was used by one character to show another character that he is really the other's future self. Only he himself would know where they are. There you also have a reference to the science fiction element. There is some time traveling going on here, but this is not totally at the core, even if at the other hand it really is because as always in these films there is major focus on how you are not really allowed to change the course of events. Or at least not change it crucially. As a consequene we have these kitsune character or call them fox masks or whatever. Characters that did not do a lot of talking, but went against the main character's older version and his attempts to change events the way he wanted to. As a consequence, I did not see these creatures as something evil really in the first place, but the longer the film goes, the more sinister they become you could say, even if their acts and looks never seem totally threatening. It was more about their quantity I suppose. Towards the end, when they all melt into this gigantic character, it was quite something and seems that with its actions and how it causes mayhem there, they forgot about their original mission to not mess too much with the events that happened in the past.

In any case, this is a film you have to watch more than once to really understand it. Maybe watch it more than five times even and there will still be a lot unclear. It's impossible to mention it all. Just take the older protagonist's initially hidden main objective. Take what happens when the two guys meet again after their initial meeting. Take the twist at the very end then when we see how the older guy wakes up somewhere totally unexpected. And so on. One of the maybe most emotional moments was when the older self decided to sacrifice his life to protect the other two. It is a bit melodramatic perhaps, but not bad in any way and worked nicely with the movie. I also liked his words that all he wanted was to see her smile again or something like that. Some may found it gooey, but I thought it was sweet and in a way he (through his other self) will stay there to see her smile a lot in the future. His sacrifice there (which was not really too much a sacrifice as we see in the end) was also pretty much worth it then because the film ends with a happy ending between the two main characters, the boy and girl, and that was kinda sweet how they had each other eventually. I surely like the entire film there more from this perspective, but I have never been too big on science fiction anyway, so it makes total sense. How they got to know each other, how they got closer here and there, how they talked about the books (sale) etc. Was sweet to watch. His initial doubts that he would rather be into girls cuter than the female protagonist were blown away fast. Was also kinda nice to see the two sit next to each other on a park bench and how one moves closer to the other on one occasion while they were talking and it was maybe to show each other something. The film reminded me a bit of some other movies. The romance had a touch of "A Walk to Remember", but maybe I was the only one thinking so and the science fiction elements, especially the frequency of the antagonist(s) reminded me of "The Matrix" and the guy there with the suit and black shades and how he was everywhere at some point too in terms of quantity. Of course, I cannot say if Ito was inspired by these films, but it is what came to my mind. If he was inspired, then probably it was rather by "The Matrix" than by "A Walk to Remember".

In any case, even if we got to witness great animation on so many occasions lately, no matter if we are talking about Japan or America, it should not be taken for granted how amazing this film looks at times. Some beautiful shots in here and the music is fine too. The character animation is another success. I also liked the supporting characters that we do not know too much about honestly and they added their share too. Just take the girl there that is the epitome of cute and the one the main character was referring to a bit when he talked about how he is more into cute girls in general than into the one who turned out his actual love interest not much later. Also the other kids watching the two main characters was kinda cute and funny on a few occasions and how they react to the two growing closer. It was these scenes that included a bit of the aforementioned comedy. In general, there are definitely not many comedic inclusions in here compared to other anime films. In the second half, they are pretty much gone altogether and it is about nothing else anymore except the romance and science fiction drama you can say. The antagonists and tension of the whole situation there makes it impossible to get in a few laughs I suppose. You could even call it an action film there. The girl when her brain works again and she wakes up from her vegetative state becomes also a bigger player than she was before that when we only saw her when the two got together and she had no idea about the big fight about to happen. Maybe it was even a bit unrealistic honestly that our two/three protagonists ended up defeating the bad guy(s) if you look at this villain's strength and power overall. I did like the element though that it was a completely silent danger and had no lines or dialogues.

One thing that others maybe liked more than myself was the inclusion of bright colors in the science fiction context. On quite a few occasions when something major was happening in terms of time shifts, we saw these really bright and really colorful special effects, brighter than any rainbow honestly, and that was a bit too exaggerated for me. This is only personal taste though. At least it felt memorable, which is never a bad thing I suppose, but for me it did not work too well. This is just minor criticism though and you see if that is what I complain about, then the film overall cannot be too bad. Except that it was really difficult to understand on a few occasions what was going on. You had to fully concentrate really and that was not even enough here and there. Perhaps not all of Ito's vision and ideas made it to the screen in a really understandable manner. Pity. Then again, I am talking as somebody struggling with science fiction here and there anyway, so this is just my biased perception. Huge genre fans may have an easier time and those who do not only adore anime (like myself), but also adore science fiction should really not miss out on this film. It is even close to a must-see for those perhaps and I think it could very well happen that this movie is again shown on the big screen at some point and then it might be an even better watch for them. For me it was a good film with here and there also a great moment, but overall I would say that seeing it on a television or laptop screen is enough for me with my background, so I would also not call it a must-see in general or great movie. For my very individual taste, a little less science fiction and a little more reality would have turned this into a better watch even. The positive recommendation was never in doubt though. Give this one a chance if you like anime. It is worth it.

Underappreciated
zerodeaths43424 April 2020
A really stunning movie with a great concept. I'm surprised that there are only 3 reviews as of now. This movie deserves more attention. This is a Sci-fi movie intertwined with a love story . I've seen people complain about the ending but that's the part I liked the most. It lets the viewers formulate their own theories and conclusion. This movie enables you to think. The visuals were good too.

Hello world is an okay movie. (NO SPOILERS)
bastigonzales20 April 2021
POSITIVE: The animation looks stunning, the art style is pretty unique for an anime. The characters are cute especially the main 2 character. The movie reminds me of Doctor strange which is good and cool.

NEGATIVE: The plot is messy its just the writers are doing too much to the plot and its messy in my opinion (I fully understand the movie so everyone who reads this can't blame me for rating this movie on average score)

Clearly Underrated
mamad-kt24 July 2020
As a Sci-Fi lover, Hello World was an unexpectedly great experience for me. As it goes for most recent anime films, the visuals are fantastic and spice up the experience the film delivers. Although, as few as they are, the characters are not deep and certainly needed more development. The way the plot is explained is also not very clear and may leave the audience baffled. These two points are probably why it is rated as it is, since probably most people didn't really understand what was going on.

But Sci-Fi-wise, the story is quite brilliant. At first it starts like a run-of-the-mill high school romance drama, but soon enough it changes with the appearance of the future Katagaki. And as the film gets into the second half, with some quick hints here and there we realize the story is more complex than what we thought it was. Saying anything further, borders on spoiling the story, so if you like Sci-Fi stories, give this one a try and enjoy.

Should have been awesome

Nice science fiction story with a cute romance and an amazing twist leading to a somewhat tragic conclusion. 10/10.

Unfortunately it was less then an hour of running time by then, and they wanted to charge full admission, so they added more movie. Everything that comes after that is filler.

Inception Love Fantasy
kosmasp16 August 2020
This is bananas as some might say. A movie that defies a simple explanation. But my summary line above should give you a clue. And still there are so many things that will surprise you, because they are coming from so far left field ... it's amazing what kind of fantasy the writers had who came up with this. It surely could not be one mind could it? I actually didn't check.

Now if you've seen Animes before you may be aware that they are quite complex and this is not different in that regard. It will not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you cherish and indulge the craziness that unfolds, this will be quite engaging. It is hard to capture what happens here in words - so it is better to watch it and get the whole thing.

Great concept, somewhat poor execution.
trevorbarten4 September 2020
WATCH THE 3 EPISODE OVA ANOTHER WORLD!! I didn't know this at the time of writing the review but this 3 episode ova not only shows helps you feel more for the other Naomi, but also is just more of the great first half of the movie. The first half was really well done, the second half was a bit sloppy. The movie looks really good, the sound design is mostly decent excluding some very underwhelming voice performances. The story while interesting as a concept was poorly explained and didn't really make too much sense (though the ending could technically explain most of that away.). It's a bit too middle of the road. I feel like it could have been great if it decided to either be a romance drama or a sci fi movie, but it's lacking in both parts as it is now. Still a fun a watch nonetheless and definitely one of the more unique anime movies to come out in recent times.

Waste of time
lilianabulnes-353772 March 2021
I think if you gave 9 stars to this is because you haven't watch a lot of anime. The story is boring, is like they made it for the new "aficionados". The coulours are badly combined too drastic. Dont bother, waist of time.

If you want to became an anime lover, start with Ghibli, and evolve from there.

My opinion, anyway.

One of the best sci fi anime made with the heart plot and twists. The last scene will change everything you thought you know. I would definitely recommend to watch it. Perhaps two three times is must to understand it fully and completely. Recommended 100%

More than Tenet
jwuczdv28 January 2021
The story involved at least 3 up to n worlds (real & virtual). It was a bit confusing while watching, but took hours to digest and analyse the storyline. The deeper you analysed, you will figure out how complicated the whole story was!

ps Tenet is too easy compare to this.

This movie is ahead of its time!
jazthefeline29 September 2020
I never expected anything when i first watched it but it turned out to be one of the best anime films i've watched so far! I think this is the type of movies that you need to rewatch again and again especially this is kinda confusing because of its "inception-like" thing. I like how the story was able to incorporate quantum physics and computer science futuristic stuffs here. The soundtracks are the BOMB. When i first watched it i also noticed something odd in the animation but it has an explanation related to the movie. I also wish that it will receive the same love how the world loved your name/kimi no nawa last 2016 because it is such an excellent masterpiece.

What a disapointment
michael-0256914 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The story had very strong beginning and the graphics was very fine, too. Unfortunately lost me the story at the half of film and dropped me.

What happens? A guy from the future appeared to help his former self to save his great love but the guy isn't from the future. He enters a kind of matrix and everybody there is just a recording. So, would the mission fail, reset...reload the backup and start again. And thats the problem, during the second half of the film I don't care about the characters because they were just recordings. Sure at the end is a turn over, but it couldn't compensate the former 40 minutes.

Conclusion: 3 stars, because I watched the entire film without skipping to get to the end.

Past and Future
fsucci30 January 2022
It tries to play with "time" like Steins Gate, Her Blue Sky, Your Name and Back to the future (to include also a not japanese film), but the result is terrible compared to the other titles. Confused, characters just sketchy, ridiculous situations and a plot that cannot be followed. It has the same review level than Her Blue Sky but in my opinion this one is really worse and maybe it may be suitable only to teenagers or kids.

One of the best anime movies
junfan-447698 June 2021
At first, I was attracted by the name of this movie. After I watched the first 10 min of the movie, I was still not able to get used to the 3D model used in this movie. But as I kept watching, I noticed that the story this movie was trying to tell was so brilliant that I could barely pay any attention to those 3D models. Overall, I could say this movie is one of the best romance movies I 've ever seen, and probably could be one of the best anime movie that is telling a sci-fi romance story. This movie is definitely worthy of re-watching.

An overpopulated world
politic19836 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ahh, the annual Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme once again, though it's a little different this year. Being busy and essentially out of any sort of social loop, I was late to the party with booking, didn't get to see any Japanese directors in the flesh and missed out on the opportunity to win £100 pounds-worth of cosmetics...for my wife.

This year, therefore, I essentially had to go with whatever was left from the strangely limited, free, online booking system, where access to the films self-destructs. Why? Probably licensing laws and copyright protection, or something like that.

Tomohiko Ito's "Hello World" is a film that seems to follow the rules of many recent internationally successful anime in that it is a love story with a sci-fi leaning, with all the visual detail you need. But, while starting off as an interesting idea, this world gets a little too overindulgent and all feels somewhat familiar.

Set in present day Kyoto, Naomi is a boy who likes to read and live an orderly life. Low on friends and confidence, his is a fairly lonely existence. A self-help guide he uses is snatched by a bird, so he gives chase to retrieve it. But it is here that he meets a strange man, claiming to be himself from the year 2027. The man wants his help, help that means that young Naomi may finally find himself some company.

His older self tells him how constant surveillance and the collection of data has meant that the future Kyoto is more a matrix-like virtual world, within a world. His first love, Ruri, suffered an accident, and so was not captured for this virtual reality. So, guiding his younger self, he sets about winning Ruri's heart and hopefully prevent the accident from happening, thus preserving her smile for all eternity.

Or, something like that.

The plot builds nicely in the first half, with the romance the main element of the story. Despite the assistance of a man from the future with endless data at him hands, it is in fact the mere physical object of books that draws Naomi and Ruri together naturally. Focusing on how the natural and physical world is more heartening than the more dangerous world of the digital would have been a direction I would have liked the story to go, but instead it goes more into the sci-fi, perhaps becoming overindulgent in its need to out-do itself as action constantly switches to yet more action.

The second half perhaps needs to pause for breath a little more, becoming an endless visual barrage of movement and colour. While essentially there is nothing wrong with that, the velocity of this, combined with the increasingly complex plotline can easily lose its audience midway through.

Visually, "Hello World" is very impressive, with a detailed recreation of Kyoto, though this has become something of a standard in bigger budget anime now. Stylistically, this does feel like the work of someone who worked on Mamoru Hosoda's "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time". But much feels familiar. Ideas feel like the sort you would expect from the aforementioned Hosoda work and other contemporary anime, as well as the likes of "Inception" and "Black Mirror". There are, therefore, maybe too many ideas crammed in here, feeling as much a music video promo as a well-paced and developed film.

This is a shame, as "Hello World" could have worked well if sticking to its first half pace, though rather than developing like a good novel, it ends favouring the fast-paced demands of the digital age.

This is a bit overrated.
rainrain_desu4 July 2021
The story remains nothing in me, the plot was too easy to be predicted, there are not many impactful plot twists. Sci-Fi lovers may love this, but I am more a supernatural lover, I cannot count how many times I yawned while watching Hello World. What is more, the romantic details have been pushed too far, they have destroyed the whole world for the girl they have just met.

There is something I really concerned. The come-from-2027 one met her by chance, but the present main character met her by an instruction. I think this complicated content made me want to rate it 8.
