Lynda Gravátt, the Harlem-born actress who starred on New York stages in such productions as 45 Seconds From Broadway, Doubt, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Old Settler and Intimate Apparel, has died. She was 76.
Gravátt died Friday at a hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, her son David Gravátt told The Hollywood Reporter.
A founding member of Robert Alexander’s Living Stage at the famed Washington-based Arena Stage company, Gravátt received a 1999 Theatre World trophy for her performance as 1940s Harlem resident Quilly McGrath in The Old Settler and a Audelco prize in 2004 for her turn as the bossy landlady Mrs. Dickson in Intimate Apparel.
On Broadway in 2001, she stood by for Leslie Uggams as Ruby in August Wilson’s King Hedley II and portrayed Bessie James in Neil Simon’s 45 Seconds From Broadway, then appeared as Mrs. Muller in 2016 in the original Broadway production of John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt.

It's something most sleep-deprived parents can relate to: their child wakes them up in the middle of the night with the insomniac claim that there's someone in their room. Thankfully, usually it's just a figment of the imagination, but for the mom and dad in Nicole Taylor Roberts' short film Go To Bed Raymond, it's a frightful fact that they'll soon come face-to-face with themselves.
Part of last year's 20th Digital Studio’s Bite Size Halloween celebration on Hulu, Go To Bed Raymond recently screened at the Overlook Film Festival in New Orleans, and I caught up with the short film's writer, filmmaker Casimir Nozkowski (whom I had the great pleasure of meeting at Overlook), to discuss collaborating with director Nicole Taylor Roberts, seeing an audience's reaction to the short film, plans for a feature-length version of Go To Bed Raymond, and more!

The casting branch of the academy is only eight years old and doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society of America has been handing out the Artios Awards for 37 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”).
Nominees for feature films were announced on February 1 (the last day of Oscar nominations voting). Many of the leading Academy Awards contenders reaped bids across the various categories according to production cost. Winners will be revealed a virtual ceremony on March 17, which is the first day of final Oscar voting.
Last year’s big budget winners were the comedy “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and the drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7 ” while “The Forty-Year-Old Version” and “One Night in Miami” took the equivalent prizes in the independent division. “Minari” won the low budget and “The Surrogate” the micro budget prizes while “Soul” claimed the animation award.

Photo: ‘The Outside Story’/Samuel Goldwyn Films With its initial world premiere in August 2020, but not ultimately released until March 30, 2021, ‘The Outside Story’ is a love letter to getting out of your comfort zone, while not-so-delicately romanticizing polyamory and blind forgiveness. Starring Brian Tyree Henry from Emmy award-winning ‘Atlanta’ and Oscar-winning ‘Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse,’ this story follows Charles, a video editor who has become a little too comfortable at home. Always opting for food delivery and spending the night in, Charles’ girlfriend, Isha, played by Sonequa Martin-Green becomes seemingly bored and resentful and winds up kissing another woman. After she reveals this to him of her own volition, Charles decides to break up with her. His path of understanding his relationship and where things went wrong is driven by the cast of characters he meets on his very block in Brooklyn, New York over the span of one long day.

It’s the cardigan that’s the giveaway. For the duration of “The Outside Story,” Brooklyn filmmaker Charles (Brian Tyree Henry) wears the kind of roomy, shapeless, porridge-colored knitwear item that is established movie code for a hero in dire need of a full life reset. Thirtysomething and recently separated from his more glamorous girlfriend, Charles has settled into a schlubby, hermetic tailspin, poring obsessively over editing work and leaving his apartment only to collect takeout delivery. Casimir Koznowski’s lightweight character comedy is set in a pre-pandemic New York, when such behavior wasn’t universally familiar, and we weren’t all clinging to some food-stained version of that same cardigan: Everyone’s advice to Charles is go outside, not to stay in, which gives this modest enterprise an unintended wistful kick.
Or perhaps that’s simply the power of Henry. An actor who can magic personality and purpose from...

Since 2017 Brian Tyree Henry has shown a good nose for great films: From the tidy indie “Crown Heights” to the blockbuster hit “Godzilla vs. Kong,”— his supporting performances often shine brightly in these packed ensembles. But directors rarely afford the charming, jovial actor with the leading roles his talent so richly deserves. In his feature directorial debut, the modest comedy “The Outside Story,” Casimir Nozkowski allows Henry to stretch his romantic muscles for a brisk tale of jealousy, missed chances, and rediscovering the best life can offer.

Charles doesn’t see much reason to leave his sunny second-floor Brooklyn apartment. Everything can be delivered, he can do his video editing at the desk that’s right next to his kitchen, and after his recent break-up, he’s got little interest in human interaction. What could possibly entice him to leave? In “The Outside Story,” Casimir Nozkowski’s ambling, rambling feature directorial debut, the answer is “bad luck” and “narrative necessity.”
In his first lead role, Brian Tyree Henry brings nuance to Charles, the introverted homebody at the center of Nozkowski’s . Meant to debut at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, one of the first major film events to be cancelled last year, Charles’ quest to get out of the house now takes on an unexpected tone. The true pleasure of The Outside Story doesn’t come from its heartwarming message about community or its nostalgic rendering of a mask-less, pre-pandemic New York City, but from Brian Tyree Henry’s exceptional performance in his first big-screen lead role.
A few years ago, Henry awed viewers as Paper Boi, the moody, low-key rapper in Donald Glover’s FX hit Atlanta. He’s continued to excel, stealing scenes and flexing skills in supporting parts in movies from Widows and If Beale Street Could Talk to, more recently, Godzilla vs. Kong. Now, with The Outside Story, Henry not only proves once again that he has range, but that he can carry an entire film.

One of the few good things to come out of the coronavirus pandemic is the re-emergence of the drive-in, an entertainment experience that was lost to two generations with the advent of movie megaplexes.
With health and government officials continuing to promote social distancing, studios are utilizing drive-in theaters to draw audiences.
Here are some of the more notable events being held in August.
Kevin Smith’s Drive-In Birthday Bash (Los Angeles)
In honor of the director’s 50th birthday, a special pop-up will be held on Monday, August 3 at Paramount Drive-In Theaters. The event will include a screening of the “Jay & Silent Bob” reboot as well as a Q&a with Smith himself. Catering and merchandise from his popular Mooby’s pop-up restaurant will be served (the physical carry-out location has been extended through August). If you don’t live in L.A., Mooby’s meal kits are also available through Goldbelly.

As the coronavirus crisis continues, most film festivals are being forced to postpone, and many have opted to launch online versions of their events. But as these new versions of film festivals keep popping up, I am getting asked by filmmakers: “Should we participate in this?” Or, more often: “Am I missing something? Why would we do this?”
My answer is always the same: If you are launching a brand-new film that is still seeking distribution, no. If you have a short, or an older film, or one where you have locked in distribution (and if your distributor agrees), or one where you are doing a Diy release — sure, consider it.
