Details have been revealed, outlining how the government’s new initiative – aimed at revitalising the UK independent sector – will work for smaller film productions.
Just last week it was announced that the UK independent sector would be able to tap into further tax relief, something that struggling producers had been requesting for a long, long time. Although the UK film industry is generally booming things aren’t as rosy for the producers looking to get smaller British films off the ground.
Last year proved that British, low-budget filmmaking can compete with cinema from any territory, thanks to high-quality releases such as Rye Lane, Scrapper and Polite Society. However, getting projects such as these off the ground is incredibly difficult given that UK studio space, crews and costs are at a premium thanks to the huge influx of business from Hollywood and across the world.

For lots of professionals in the UK screen industry, the work simply hasn’t come back since last year’s strikes. Bectu is calling on the government to step in.
Last year was a difficult time for people in the UK screen sector. Lots of talented people found themselves out of work, given that so much of our service-based screen industry is dependent on investment and projects from across the Atlantic, where a series of damaging strikes shut down the US industry for months on end.
As if the shutdown wasn’t bad enough, the knowledge that these strikes would in no way improve the pay and conditions for these British workers was a source of further frustration. If that wasn’t bad enough, the creative sector trade union Bectu has now revealed that the majority of these UK professionals are yet to find work, months after the strikes have ended.

What a difference a few years makes.
At one point, it seemed like Lori Loughlin wouldn't ever be on a Hallmark project again after the cabler cut ties with the actress amid the college admissions scandal.
At the time, she was edited out of episodes of When Calls the Heart that were about to air and lost her role in the Garage Sale Mysteries movies, including completed but unaired mysteries.
As you'll recall, Loughlin and husband Mossimo Giannulli both pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges for securing admission to the University of Southern California for their two daughters.
The Full House alum served two months in jail and was ordered to pay a $150,000 fine and complete 150 hours of community service.
Mossimo served five months, paid a $250,000 fine, and was ordered to complete 250 hours of community service.

Republican presidential candidate and former governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley posted on X a picture of a bird cage and birdseed. She said the Trump campaign had left it outside of her hotel room door – clearly a reference to Trump’s previous insult.
Haley captioned the photo, “After a day of campaigning, this is the message waiting for me outside my hotel room,” followed by the hashtags #PrettyPatheticTryAgain and #YouJustMadeMyCaseForMe.
Donald Trump had previously called Haley a “birdbrain” after the GOP second debate, in which many pundits had declared her the winner.
The debate was last week at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California.
While many across the internet have accused, Haley of fabrication journalists confirmed the Trump campaign was responsible for the stunt.

Before John Lennon realized his songs could include meaningful lyrics, he used poetry as an outlet for his more personal, introspective writing. He sent poems to his friend, Stuart Sutcliffe, and used them as an outlet for his emotions. When a friend accidentally threw out a book of his poetry, he was, naturally, devastated. She explained that he immediately broke down into tears.
John Lennon wasn’t happy when a friend threw out a book of his poetry
When Lennon learned his girlfriend, Cynthia, was pregnant, he began spending long nights at bars, drinking away his fear and resentment of fatherhood. He also poured his feelings into notebooks full of poetry. His friend Bill Harry, the creator of Liverpool music publication Mersey Beat, saw firsthand how much Lennon’s poetry meant to him.

Louisville Metropolitan Police released 911 calls from frantic witnesses of a mass shooting at a downtown bank, revealing new details surrounding the horrific event. The mass shooting occurred on Monday when 25-year-old Connor Sturgeon, who live-streamed the massacre, used an Ar-15-style rifle to shoot his co-workers at Old National Bank in Louisville, Kentucky, 30 minutes before the bank was set to open.
He killed five co-workers and injured eight others, including 26-year-old rookie police officer Nicholas Wilt, who was shot in the head after only just graduating from the police academy 10 days prior to the shooting.
According to the 911 calls released on Wednesday, the first caller was from an Old National Bank employee who worked at a different branch but witnessed the shooting on video during a morning staff meeting. “I just watched it on a Teams meeting. We were having a board meeting,” she said sounding distressed. “I saw somebody on the floor.

Netflix viewers have drawn uncanny parallels between a recent film and the chemical spill that took place in Ohio earlier this month.
On 3 Febuary, a 50-car train derailment in the small town of East Palestine caused a leak of chemicals including vinyl chloride, butyl acrylate, ethylhexyl acrylate, and ethylene glycol monobutyl ether.
More than 2,000 residents were ordered to evacuate nearby buildings due to health concerns over the leak but have since been allowed to return.
White Noise, starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig, was released on the Netflix late last year.
Adapted from the acclaimed 1985 novel by American writer Don DeLillo, the film follows a death-obsessed academic (Driver), and his family.
One of the biggest plot points in both the book and film concerns a train crash which release a huge cloud of toxic chemicals into the air, referred to somewhat euphemistically as the Airbourne Toxic Event.

New Delhi, Nov 21 (Ians) Reacting calls to reinstate American far-right radio show host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, Elon Musk on Monday categorically denied Jones’ return to Twitter, saying he has no mercy for those who use the “deaths of children to gain fame” and fulfil their political ambitions.
A jury in the US state of Connecticut last month ordered Jones to pay 965 million in damages to the family members of victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
The families sued Jones after he claimed the shooting on December 14, 2012, at the school in Newton, Connecticut, was a hoax staged by US authorities to impose gun control measures.
Amid calls by his followers to reinstate Jones like former US President Donald Trump, Musk said: “My firstborn child died in my arms. I felt his last heartbeat”.

One of the most common (and overused) setups in horror has to be a young babysitter fending off a killer. The trope existed on and off screen before Halloween, but there’s no denying the 1978 movie influenced countless people to make their own comparable stories about imperiled caregivers. Now, readers will take one look at HarperCollins’ 1995 young-adult series Baby-Sitter’s Nightmares and naturally think these terror tales are nothing more than rehashes of old slasher movies. Looks can be deceiving, though.
Bill Schmidt’s artwork for the first two Baby-Sitter’s Nightmares books show the main characters, both young and attractive teen girls, in familiar scenarios. On the cover of Daniel Parker’s Alone in the Dark, the babysitter clutches a phone handset, mouth agape with fear, and staring out the window. The art for M.C. Ben Foster, Charmaine Bingwa, Gilbert Owuor and Mustafa Shakir have joined the cast of Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming thriller “Emancipation,” starring Will Smith.
Smith stars as Peter, a runaway slave who flees Louisiana in hopes of traveling north to freedom. “Emancipation” is inspired by the true story of “Whipped Peter,” an enslaved person who emancipated himself from a southern plantation and joined the Union Army. In 1863, photos taken of Peter during an Army medical examination first appeared in Harper’s Weekly. One image, known as “The Scourged Back,” shows the scars from a whipping on Peter’s bare back, illustrating the true cruelty of slavery and ultimately contributed to growing public opposition.
Fuqua will direct from a script by William N. Collage. Fuqua Films and Smith’s media company Westbrook Inc. are backing the project, which sold to Apple Studios for a reported $120 million.

At this year’s MipTV, The Wit hosted its first-ever presentation for a Fresh TV Lab, hosted by CEO and co-founder Virginia Mouseler and focused on Esports, podcasts and brands.
“Esports is a growing entertainment option, not only for younger people but with a wider and wider audience. Of course, Esports is primarily about online gaming and streaming platforms, but it’s not generating its own game show formats. Are they imitating TV, or should TV imitate them?” Mouseler asked.
Starting in Spain, the presentation kicked off with “Top Gamers Academy,” from “Operación Triunfo” producers Gestmusic, an Endemol Shine Iberia company. An early transmedia phenomenon, the show is broadcast on linear network Neox, streaming websites Twitch, YouTube and digital streaming platform Atresplayer, with Banijay handling distribution. From “Evil Dead” to “Don’t Breathe,” director Fede Álvarez has frequently delivered terrifyingly tense moments between characters on the big screen. But his latest project, “Calls” for Apple TV Plus, taps into that same level of emotion without showing even one frame of his actors’ faces.

The whole thing’s a big Rorschach test and you will see what you think you see, but I don’t want to show you anything literal, and even the storytelling is like that,” Álvarez tells Variety.
