It's watchable, just don't expect too much.
Sleepin_Dragon17 April 2021
Young student Julie falls in love with a handsome, older Policeman, David, who isn't quite what he seems to be.

I don't think it's quite as bad as some would have you to believe, I have seen much worse, and I've also seen much better, worth remembering that the events here are loosely based on real life events.

Ok, some of the acting is a little dodgy, but young Amber Midthunder was really good I thought.

The parts that work, Julie, Amber is good, she'd pretty, she has a vulnerability, her character is sincere. David, Zimmerman is very well cast, handsome and charming, he's a bit hit and miss, I also think the story is good.

On the debit side, it's a bit cheap looking, it doesn't flow well, the cutaways are jarring, and some of the acting is very ropey. The ending is a little silly, but always good to see the shoe on the other foot. 5/10.

Potential untapped
I_Ailurophile3 July 2021
I'll watch just about anything: highly acclaimed award-winners and tacky creature features or Lifetime originals alike. Sometimes that works in my favor, and sometimes it doesn't. I decided to watch 'Only mine' simply because I enjoyed star Amber Midthunder's performance in 'The ice road' and wanted to see more of her work.

Was this worth it? That depends on how open-minded you are to a wide variety of storytelling styles.

Director Michael Civille has few credits to his name, and writer Matt Young fewer still. This is no particular indicator of quality, as many outstanding features have been made by first-time film-makers. Camerawork, lighting, set decoration, music, the production generally - nothing is all that remarkable here, but that's fine; plenty of captivating movies have done more with less.

That leaves us to assess the acting, the screenplay, and the narrative.

When a film falls below our expectations or standards, the actors - being most visible - are the first targets of our criticism. But I don't necessarily think that's fair. Maybe a performer is genuinely incapable, but it's just as if not more likely that they're simply following the cues they are given in the screenplay, or from their director. The best actors in the world can still only work with the material they're given. I think the performances in 'Only mine' are fine - just not especially remarkable, not even that of Brett Zimmerman, exuding every ounce of sleaze and psychopathy that he can as antagonist David. Of course, I sat to watch this based on Midthunder's involvement. I do like her performance here, but what I especially see is potential that Civille's direction didn't fully allow to flourish, and which was limited by Young's writing. I mean to keep an eye on Midthunder still, with hopes of in the future seeing more of what she's capable of.

The screenplay is direct and forthright, with little nuance to speak of, and little room for the cast to exercise their craft. The flow of the narrative bounces between interviews with characters after the fact and a plainspoken portrayal of the course of events. Consider these aspects together with the mildly fantastical, somewhat overcooked accentuation of vengeful empowerment, and the result is a picture that bears no small resemblance to a Lifetime original movie. That aligns neatly with Young's most notable prior writing credit for - yes, a Lifetime original movie. In fairness, however, I earnestly think 'Only mine' is a slight cut above the average TV movie; take that as you will.

At length, that brings us to the narrative, which dovetails handily into the film's style. The premise, while accurate, is also misleading, because for 77 of the 84 minutes of story, what 'Only mine' is, in actuality, is a portrait of domestic violence and partner abuse. It's all here: toxic masculinity; a sense of entitlement; stalking; masterful manipulation of the victim especially, but also everyone around her; the ease as a third party of seeing how despicable the abuser is, and a misguided sense that "the victim must be so stupid to have not seen it." But that's exactly how these scenarios evolve in real life; for naivete, or for unwillingness to believe it whether conscious or subconscious, a person becomes incapable of seeing what is right before them.

The ultimate act of revenge promised by the most basic premise is gratifying, with violence exceeding our expectations for any feature of a similar bent. On the other hand, the short denouement is perhaps a bit too forward, meeting those expectations precisely. When all is said and done, there are no surprises here. We get exactly what is promised: no more, no less.

Is 'Only mine' an outright bad movie? No, I don't think so. I see the possibilities of what it could have been, both in the narrative content and in the cast assembled. I think what it comes down to is that Civille and Young just weren't quite up to the task. Maybe that's unfair, but that also doesn't mean they can't surprise us in the future with unanticipated delights.

It's striking for the stark, harrowing portrayal of the victim and her abuser; regrettable, for the potential that wasn't unlocked; and a tad tedious, for the notable similarity to a niche genre of TV movie. I judge this to be of fair quality - a passable way to spend time, so long as you're not especially picky about what you watch. Opinions will vary; this is only mine.

Bad, But Not That Bad
Mehki_Girl9 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The movie wasn't particularly good and a little corny with the talking heads.

However, people complaining about lack of buildup, while that's true, these types of guys are telling you by the second date how much they are in love you and you're soulmates. There's actually a name forfor that - love bombing. Cults do it to. As soon as they have you in their clutches, the control and violence escalates.

Garbage

Warning: Spoilers
This movie is garbage wtf. It went 0-100 real quick . Hardly showed any of their relationship or them getting to know each other. Literally, one date, kissing. Fine. Next date at the cabin, "oh I like you so much blah blah". Then out of nowhere, BOOM, he's crazy and stalking her at her house and the babysitter's. So much left out. So many questions. Waste of time. Horrible movie.

Don't bother! The acting was awful as was the way they laid the storyline. Sad this was based on true events and they didn't give that poor girl justice by making a decent movie.

The acting was SOOOOOO bad!!!
yarixac23 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had potential, it was based on a true events of a woman who suffered a great ordeal at the hands of an abusive man.

The actress was SOOOOO bad it made this "suspenseful" movie a comedy. This entire movie was rushed. I mean.... David telling her that they were a match made in heaven after the first date? Come on! Give me a break. The only time the actress was good was when she was playing dead.

Horrible acting, horrible portrayals.
cuzicantstop26 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is the type of movie that panders to the lowest common denominator of people watching NetFlix movies on a chilly Friday night.

From what I understand this movie is based on a true story. If the movie had been more interesting, I would probably look up the backstory that this was based on. Either way, it's glaringly obvious that they took extreme liberties in adding drama to it. The saddest part is that the actors and actresses do such a bad job with it that it's next to impossible to get invested in the story.

Fellas. When your girlfriends or wives decide that this is the movie that she'd like to watch, I'd advise putting all of your veto powers to use.

Afterthought: I read into the real story a little bit after writing this, and I realized just how much creative liberties they took with the story. Using the "based on a true story" tag is reaaaalllllly stretching the term. The stalker in real life was not a police officer, and was not killed by the girl as they claim in the movie. The real life man turned himself into police and took them to where he had shot "Julie". The stalker in real life sure as hell didn't shoot the police chief, either.

The real life "Julie" had to learn how to walk again after her ordeal. She definitely didn't get up and exact revenge on her stalker right away. Maaaaaaan, this movie blows so badly.

There are ways to embellish a movie based on a true story and still have it be entertaining (See Alpha Dog). This film fails at it so horribly. I would rather have Fran Drescher sing me to sleep than ever watch a film like this again.

Pretty decent thriller
misselissa24 January 2019
Is it kind of like a typical Lifetime Movie? For sure. But im a sucker for lifetime movies and I know im not the only one. There's alot of people saying the acting is terrible. Meh. It's not the best, but I honestly didn't think it was as bad as alot of people were making it out to be. People were also saying that the progression of the relationship was too fast to be realistic. Uh, yeah, it was too fast to be a healthy relationship. That's the point. It was the farthest thing from a healthy relationship. I see people on social media who date for a week and are already spouting sonnets as ridiculous as it is. So yeah, it's not that far fetched. And I don't find it that far fetched that possesive behavior from a psycho could start that quickly too. All in all, I thought it was a pretty decent cheap thrill.

Why did David left her half dead? he is smart and he already shot her with police gun. he never thought her dead body could be found? i don't understand why film makers make movies if they can't use any logic.

Wow has America become so frucking critical and NEGATIVE!! Watch g8 film gr8 story!!!
joiningjt7 September 2021
1st off I'm a 60 year old man married 32 years and my wife lived through a similar situation she was lucky I met her and I let her ex know his abusive days were over. I was quite crazy back then and I scared the crap out of that coward. This woman didn't have any support, the story shows in detail how these control freaks work. It has a phenomenal story and I liked the ending. Dont listen to probably a bunch of abusive cowards who had their little egos hurt. This film will teach some people to watch for the warnings and then jump to their rescue and help .

Questionable Film. Unnecessary Negative Reviews.
payasoingenioso11 August 2020
It's not a trash movie.

The 10 year age difference looks cringeworthy since he even older, and she looks even younger.

The movie is barely based on a true story. The real story is...

The acting is decent. I believe the negative reviews are due to a white male being the antagonist against a Native American protagonist female. I notice negative reviews often flock to movies that question white male superiority.

Also, this could have been a Lifetime movie.

Way too fast-paced. And acting sucked for all actors. Didn't get the point of the whole interview/documentary part... the main character really doesn't know how to act.. I would act better than her lmao.

Had Potential (Spoilers)
rayvenrenai-622-3300320 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is about a girl who meets an officer and immediately they began dating. After, a few dates, we notice the cop is possessive. He randomly in her home, shows up to her friends house while she babysitting, corners her with a rack and tells her to keep their conversations to herself because people are starting to talk. However, she told her mother who told the police who did absolutely nothing. So people in the town turn their back on her because they believe she's starting rumors about the cop. Cop ends up shooting her in hopes he left her for dead. She survived on a mission to get "revenge" that she did.

There was no build up to the relationship of the lead actress and the cop. They went on a date and next thing you know he's a stalker. Also, you do not know how old she is. We just know that she applied to college. She look about 16 or 17. While the cop look like he's in his late 30s.

It's about the story
christinapetalwti11 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Most of the bad reviews are written by men. One specifically said "it doesn't make sense how they believed him over a girl they knew and cared for".

But that's what happens.

The movie portrayed exactly how manipulators act and convince everyone, how the victim becomes unreliable and not trustworthy over the abuser's words.

Many women have experienced relationships with guys like this and it is exactly as shown in this movie.

Maybe not the best acting, but a great story about abuse, femicide and strength that needed to be out there.

TERRIBLE acting
chandlerpayton-756-52180920 January 2019
Other than sounding like a total typical lifetime movie, the plot of this movie could have been made into something good. But I have to say, this is probably the WORST acting I have ever seen- and I watch a lot of movies. It actually made me uncomfortable to watch in some scenes because the emotions did not seem realistic at all. I mean, I think I could fake cry better than that chick.

Not as bad as some are making out
johnjanis16 March 2019
If people honestly think this is one of the worst or even the worst movie they've ever seen then they mustn't have seen many movies. I have literally seen hundreds of worse ones. I've seen hundreds of better ones too but it's worth watching if you have nothing else to do. Is it memorable? Not really. Is it Orginal? Of course not, but it's certainly watchable.

What a terrible movie. Not worthy of your time at all. Mainly because of the bad acting, but also because the story went from zero to 100 in a split second. No background, no real storyline.

A new age Fear
kulgan5817 January 2019
This movie was a surprisingly interesting movie to watch. Midthunder most notably from Legion delivered a strong performance. Zimmerman struck a nice balance of initial charm while building to the inevitable crazy needed for the character. Supporting cast including the chief, detective, and friend from the diner all delivered. The main opportunity in the movie was the various jumps that occurred in the story which could have taken more time to build the characters and relationship/tension as David became more obsessed. Overall a good flick with a nice twist at the end.

You must have dozed off near the end, but who could blame you. The guy dead inside is David (I think that's his name), the bad guy. The guy on the ground outside, in uniform, is his boss, who David shot during the night.

Perfect portrayal of an obsessed man
mandokal5 October 2022
Amber Midthunder is excellent as always. She was believable as a young woman who is strong but realizes that she is in over her head.

The psycho boyfriend was so spot-on that the last time I saw such a scary character acted out was Mark Walburg in Fear.

Maybe the directing wasn't superb, but the dialog was believable and the storytelling was purposeful. For such a low budget, they made wise use of props and locations. The camerawork and music were excellent. Even the use of colors added to the moods of each scene.

If the actions of this movie made your blood boil over and over again, then the movie did exactly what it set out to do.

ANYBODY CAN DO ACTING - 0/10 STARS!
feryalmahmud26 January 2019
Honestly I've seen some pretty terrible movies but this is by far the worst. Predictable plot but worst is the acting. The main girl is terrible literally cannot act for her life, her reactions do not make sense. I would be scared for my life if my boyfriend did the things he did. Just awful. Whoever casted her must be blind. Horrible movie overall could not finish!
