A chapter finally closed
Kingslaay13 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This was a decent episode but most importantly the Mary Winchester story is closed out. Mary, despite being one of the shows foundations, never made a splash. The only thing she added was the shock value when she was brought back but she has just 'existed' rather than wow us. Even though John Winchester was great in the show SPN got it right by not bringing him back except for a family reunion. I hope the writers learnt a lesson that bringing a character back from the dead without any real purpose is pointless.

The show gave her a quick and fitting end. She is at peace so are some of the fans. What is more interesting is what this means for Jack and the Winchesters, this is new territory. Not your traditional new foe, Jack was a Winchester and he just killed Mary. Be interested to see how it plays out.

Overkill in overreacting...
billyllewis25 May 2021
Huge SPN fan that's watched every episode and most all episodes 2-4 times. Lol. Jack did a mercy killing on a snake. (Snakes are a reference to evil in the Bible ya know but that's actually besides the point.) Dean flips the flip out that Castiel didn't tell the brothers that Jack is struggling with things inside his head. The Winchesters has been struggling with "inner voices" and/or "inner demons" for years and most times keeping them from each other over and over and over again. Jack didn't completely lose it until after he killed Mary because he knew he hurt the brothers. I simply can not understand why the writers/producers had Dean being so hard on Castiel especially how loyal he's been ever since he exploded after taking in all those souls years back. Yes, Jack did kill Mary and Dean shutting out Castiel the way he did still today makes no sense UNLESS they ran out/couldn't think of a direction to take after Mary's passing. Again.

"What's dead should stay dead"
StorieLuver12 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It's been 12 long years since Dean stated those words after John brought him back in Season 2 as the show's first major resurrection. The Winchester brothers have actually known this basic truth even longer if you consider the Season 1 episode "Faith" where there was fallout after Sam messed with their first reaper to heal a mortally injured Dean. Death himself reiterated this to the Winchesters in the Season 6 episode "Appointment in Samarra": the boys need to stop messing with the natural order. When Bambi Boy was resurrected in the first half of this season, I had a feeling it wasn't going to end well, and this episode was proof of that. It's too bad the brothers didn't just leave well enough alone back in "Byzantium." Of all the new characters the writers have added in the last few seasons, Mary brought more to the show than Bambi Boy, and given the choice between them, I'd have rather kept her around than Jack. As Dean pointed out at the beginning of this episode, the nephilm has basically become their "Get Out of Jail Free Card," an easy way to solve all of their (and the writers') problems, and Sam notes that Dean is disappointed in that (rightfully so, the "nephilim-ex-machina" makes things far too easy). Given that the title for next week's episode is "Jack in the Box," I'm guessing that the Malik Box that Dean built in "Damaged Goods" is going to come back into play, but this time to hold Jack instead of Dean, which is NOT a direction I would've predicted after "Prophet and Loss," so good on the writers for keeping that ace up their sleeves. Final thoughts on the best scenes in this episode: 1) After all of the flashbacks throughout the episode showing what Mary has meant to Jack, Cas and Sam, the best one was the final, wordless one with Dean, where nothing needed to be spoken, the smile on Dean's face with his mom was at his side says it all. 2) During Mary's funeral at the end, Cas looks over at Dean, and seeing the turmoil on his suffering friend's face, starts walking toward him, presumably to attempt to offer comfort. And Sam holds him back and shakes his head "no" at the angel, knowing that his brother is in no fit state to talk to the friend he feels has let them down so badly. (I'm actually a little worried for Sam, I think he's going to be so busy dealing with his brother's grief that his own will get overlooked, the same thing happened in Season 2 when they lost their father, it took several episodes before Dean even acknowledged "He was your dad, too"...)

Powerful and Intense moving episode!
skip-9875614 April 2019
This episode and the one before it was some of the most powerful episodes of the series...I was riveted to the screen. How will the characters who love each other and are a family deal with the tragedy that occurred? How can you undo what cant be undone? the show has stepped over a line that makes for some powerful explosive and dramatic television! I loved this episode and the one before it..THIS is what i like seeing on the show...real acting, strong emotion, and heartbreaking choices as oppossed to monster of the week silliness...It looks like the season is moving towards a sunami of epic proportions as things wind up to their ultimate ending...im excited!

So happy that marry Winchester died
strpiyush10 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Marry Winchester is tha most boring characters in the supernatural. I'm so happy that she died, i literally hated her. But this season was just too straight, no twist at all. Bit disappointed with this season. 10 stars just to end the marry Winchester.

danceman-4177614 April 2021
Two kill a character bring her back and kill her again is insane. They made it work in my opinion. This is whats amazing about this show the off the wall things they can pull off that no other show can.

Character Redemption
stielperdr11 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Nothing stays dead in the world of Supernatural. When Mary Winchester was brought back it wasn't so much for the benefit of Sam and Dean, despite what Amora said. I believe Mary was brought back for her own redemption. She was full of regret for making the deal She died in pain and agony while her family watched her burn.

Mary being brought back allowed her to see how Sam and Dean grew up and the difference they make in the world. Mary Campbell started their path with her own history of hunting. Despite her deal she was given the chance to see her boy's success as any mother wants in life....

Same "Lucifer in the head" thing again
sloopnp22 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Remember when Sam lost his soul, then had Lucifer in his head? It's happening again, but to Jack. Running out of ideas, guys? Should have kept Michael in the mix. At least he was new and interesting. I'm not going to miss Mary. She served no purpose and should not have been back on the show this long. Losing both parents made the Winchesters' who they are. Stop bringing everyone back.

This Again
charkolet31 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This honestly wasn't a bad episode but I don't want to give it higher rating because it doesn't deserve it. It's the same repeated the-writers-don't-know-what-to-do-with-this-character-so-lets-kill-them-off thing they do and it truly gets old. It gets difficult to even feel for the character who has died because they hardly stick around that long and will possibly be brought back again anyway. One of my least favorite things about the show.

Low point this season...
songod-9500314 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This season had been moving so well I suppose a clunker was to be expected.

Castiel has been an issue with me for a long while; as in I do not understand why after getting his grace back he is not zapping himself around but instead drives. That is an example of what I was thinking this ep, not about Mary, not about Jack's soul, the snake, or anything. There was Jack winging it all over the world and Cas is driving a pickup. I wrack my memory to see if I can recall why he no longer can or will fly\zap; but no. I remember his grace restored in the old library and remember his wings returning; but why he's still half an angel I do not know.

As for the rest I knew either a demon Mary would come back or the spell would not work. It sorta kinda turned out with a shell coming back but no life in it. Still fairly bland. I got no connection emotionally with Sam and Dean over losing their mom again. Maybe they as actors never got along?? Regardless, her passing is sort of like an "Oh well" rather than the punch it should have been.

People are predicting Jack will be the enemy now. Sure, like how could they defeat him any more than they could have Michael? Supernatural, of course... Rowena, Cas, maybe some surprise visit from God... Hope the last few eps put us back on course.

Scratch horror from the genre add soapopera
shwetafabm15 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Can you remember any episode that spent this much time mourning one mediocre ill placed boring character for this amount of time while nothing happened? Maybe its just me but Mary as a character had no emotional connection in the show, sure the situation was pretty intense but the flashbacks and pretty much nothing of substance was a drag and boring. Also the only good thing being the spell and what it would bring back... Was expecting something...lamest thing ever.

There's too much plot in this episode
CubsandCulture8 November 2021
The writers really needed to cut back on the moving pieces of this story. Rowena/Necromancy could have easily been cut. The episode would have been far better served by having the characters wrestle with their emotions as opposed jumping around playing cat and mouse.

Also it was just a snake Dean!

It was a really good episode, but
marykaycamp27 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
On second watch it reminded me of why I stopped watching it a while ago. To have Mary come back and then be taken away all over again broke me so completely. I just feel like it was wrong for whatever reason was wrong to the boys and to the fans. 💔

Almost gave up
bomiranda223 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Too much Mary. Too much whining too much talking. Funny how the writers can make you sick of characters you loved. Deans a jerk, Cass is a domestic pet and Sam is in a perpetual state of confusion. The Lucifer character is nauseating the only good one left is Rowena I will hang in there cause I've come this far but I don't know why!

Morality?
supermaggie27 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Sure, killing a human is never okay, but that the Winchesters all three go bonkers about Jack killing Nick (leading to the tragic death of Mary) is completely ridiculous after Dean killing Germans and celebrating (himself) for it (or in the case of the poor uninvolved son Sam and Dean are fine with him being chased and probably killed for helping them) - why care, it is just (quote) germans, but why care, hate is so great, makes you forget your own sins, makes up for the lack of creativity (finding other plots than WW1 or 2), but a (pretty much) monster like Nick - well, since he is , it is a sin to kill HIM - the premise of the show in the beginnig brought to absurdity, I am so happy it is gonna end soon, and I used to love the show, but it was destroyed completely by hateful people lacking creativity and morals.

Stupidnatural Lucifer Lingers On As Imaginary Friend
Johnny_West12 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Mary Winchester, the unfriendly, miserable, alcoholic absentee Mom mouths off to Jack after he kills Lucifer, and she becomes a puff of ash. Her loss is our gain as fans of better TV. Jack had just killed off the most annoying character on Supernatural. After ten years of his boring taunting of the dumb Winchesters, it took Jack to finally kill off Lucifer. Jack has now killed Nick-Lucifer-Mark twice. Once at the end of last season, and now again.

Unfortunately, Mark Pellegrino is dead as Satan, and dead as the human version of Lucifer, but he keeps coming back thanks to the lazy writers of Supernatural. Now Lucifer is Jack's imaginary friend and advice buddy.

Meanwhile, when the Winchesters and Castiel discover the burned up body of Lucifer, they act as if they had just discovered their best friend had died. They actually show more concern for the dead Lucifer than for their dead Mother Mary. The Winchesters just get dumber and dumber every episode.

Once a great show has disappointingly faded fast
stevegallagh10 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The writing on this show has fallen off a cliff. That's a few episodes now and it keeps going.

Why did Mary push Jack when she suggested going there and guess what was going to happen, yes he was always going to do Nick in, would you blame him.

Doesnt help that Dean is becoming more one dimensional.

Thankfully Cas is still there.

Bad episode, Castiel again trying and trying
arzenium13 April 2019
I'm a big fan of Supernatural. Not a fan of Castiel after seeing all his fails and mistakes . Now it's so bored because that character never learns, he wanted to fix this problem with Jack, and he failed and when there's concequences, he just says "sorry" again and again, after this, for a balance: Sam and Dean says they are guilty too. This history is not interesting anymore. They show us how Castiel is a dumb, there's not sense and the writers are using his stupidity to try to create something. There's not evolution about the character and the history. It's moment to end the show.

Dabb and crew are done
Tawrens25 April 2019
Unlike some posters claiming Mary or John an alcoholic um no neither were alcoholics. Mary like John is a basis of the show, both had amazing scenes with the boys.

That's why I'm pissed Dabb took a lesson from Carver the butcher and screwed the pooch. Pushed Mary aside and tried to cram down our throats as family idiot Jack. His ego was amazing, slamming humans, getting people killed and then murdering Mary and yet he never learned anything from any of it., and it was murder not a accident

Please tell me Jack will suffer a long painful death then be repeatedly revived to be killed again and again. The character as they say lather, rinse and repeat. His ego never let his brain (if he had one) get a word in edgewise and all the teens trying to make excuses for an egomaniac murderer disgust me.

I'm so tired of wunderkind Jack who has taken over the show and left the Winchesters as after thoughts on their own show.
