Welcome to September, ladies and gentlemen. With the summer coming to and end, the fall almost upon us, and the Covid-19 pandemic still very much impacting the industry, much is still up in the air. Such is life with the coronavirus holding up much of the film industry. As fitting this weird year, not much has changed since July when I looked at the best of the first half of the year. Mostly, this just means the best is (hopefully) still to come here. We shall see, but just keep in mind that the midpoint of 2020 has been somewhat of a holding pattern, for obvious reasons. Let’s get right down to it. Below you’ll find my top ten of the year so far, along with my awards for the first two thirds of 2020. Here you go folks, and enjoy: 10. Crshd 9. The Outpost 8. Although it still has a long way to go to catch up to Netflix, HBO Max is gradually building a reputation for both an impressive library of content and its own original programming. Created by Adam Guzikowski, the program could be one of HBO Max’s first big hits with critics and audiences, and is set to arrive on September 3rd. This week looks to be the biggest yet for original feature films debuting online. We don’t have data for “Greyhound,” the Tom Hanks World War II drama that Sony sold to Apple for $70 million; ditto Sundance hit “Palm Springs” on Hulu, or what traction “Hamilton” had in its second Disney+ weekend.
In a business-as-usual world, those would be significant players. Of even greater note: 10 VOD originals filled 50 percent of the four top 10 VOD lists we track. This weekend reflects a shift to newer titles, rather than those that received a theatrical release.
Rod Lurie’s “The Outpost,” set during the Afghanistan war, is #1 at Apple, and #2 at FandangoNow and Spectrum in its second week. It seems to have staying power and has received endorsements that can help more than reviews, including this one from someone who was there:

Well, we’re halfway through one of the strangest movie years we’ve ever had. For someone who sees more than 300 films a year, not having been in a theater since early March is insane. Still, as you all know, I’ve still been seeing plenty of things, so my film count is over 180 overall for 2020. That being said, for most, that’s not the case, and that’s a shame. Still, with it being July 1st, it’s time to look back on the first half of the year, honoring the best movies and performances that I’ve seen. This year, I’m being very open-minded (minus two specific titles), so if I’ve seen it, it’s potentially on the list. Basically, there’s a few festival titles or July releases that I normally would have held back on, but I figured…why not? Let’s get right down to it.

It seems like every other week brings a new streaming service with it, but the May 27 launch of HBO Max is, indeed, a potential watershed moment. While presented as a branch of the existing HBO brand, it’s more accurately a WarnerMedia behemoth effort that unites the conglomerates many properties (plus a few original efforts) in one convenient place — that is, if you can figure out how to get it, let alone whether or not you already have access to it.
On its debut day, Variety’s chief TV critics Caroline Framke and Daniel D’Addario took a look through the new service to discuss its library, interface, and overall potential.
Caroline Framke: The first thing I did this morning was figure out how, exactly, to access HBO Max at all. In the months, weeks, days leading to this moment, the seemingly simple question of “how do you get HBO Max?...

TruTV’s flagship series Impractical Jokers is getting a remotely filmed offshoot, Impractical Jokers: Dinner Party, amid the coronavirus-related Hollywood production shutdown.
The new, six-episode half-hour series is set to premiere on May 21. Starring Joe Gatto, James “Murr” Murray, Brian “Q” Quinn, and Sal Vulcano, collectively known as the comedy troupe The Tenderloins, the show virtually reunites the long-time friends, forced apart for the first time in over 25 years by the pandemic, as they sit down to break bread in their respective homes. Fans will see the group like never before, with an up close and personal glimpse at their lives while they practice social distancing. (Watch a promo above)
Impractical Jokers: Dinner Party marks the latest extension to the Impractical Jokers franchise. It follows the February release of the feature-length Impractical Jokers: The Movie, which had the highest per-screen average of all major theatrical openers in its first week.

A third of the way through the year, it’s safe to say that 2020 is unlike any we’ve ever faced. Cinemas are shut, large scale wide releases are on pause, and the only things being put out are independent titles, through Video On Demand services. Still, there are a great deal of quality films have that come out, along with several award worthy performances. Today, much like we did last month, we’re going to focus on these movies and acting turns, as a way of keeping a positive frame of mind. To be fair, a lot of these flicks and acting jobs will be repeats, but we’re just in a sort of holding pattern right now. Still, superior cinema is superior cinema… Let’s get right down to it. Below you’ll find my top ten of the year so far, along with my awards for the...

For almost all of us, being stuck in our homes has led to mass amounts of boredom. For those like myself, not being able to go to the movie theater is a huge change from what we’re used to. Luckily, a number of films that came out just before the Coronavirus pandemic broke out have gone quickly to Video On Demand, allowing audiences to still indulge in their offerings. One such title is Impractical Jokers: The Movie, one of my favorite comedies of 2020 so far, and a perfect tonic from all of the world’s stress right now. Film wise, there are few options more determined to put a smile on your face than this one. For those who still don’t know about this team, a quick refresher is in order for you. The Impractical Jokers are Joe Gatto, James Murray, Brian Quinn (Q for short), and Sal Vulcano.

In some ways, it feels very silly to do this annual look at the best of the first quarter of the cinematic year. After all, the world has changed and the film world especially has come to a screeching halt. At the same time , a sense of normalcy however possible is always good. So, I’m pressing on and listing my favorite titles and work from the first three months of 2020. Obviously, a lot of high profile flicks were delayed, so whether I saw them or not, I’m not including them here. Still, including things I saw late in 2019 but hit this year, I had over 90 options to pull from. So, hopefully this is a Farley exhaustive list, even if it’s very much skewed by my personal taste. Let’s get right down to it. Below you’ll find my top ten of the year so far, along...

TruTV’s surprise winter feature sleeper Impractical Jokers: The Movie will be available on Wednesday, April 1, April Fool’s Day, just five weeks after its theatrical play due to the national shutdown of cinemas during the Covid-19 pandemic. Again no shocker here about the early home release given how all current theatrical releases such as Onward, Sonic the Hedgehog, Invisible Man and more have to take refuge in homes so that they can keep accruing bucks, especially when the entire nation is self quarantined.
The comedy stars James “Murr” Murray, Brian “Q” Quinn, Joe Gatto, and Sal Vulvano, aka the comedy troupe The Tenderloins, who play themselves in a fictional story of a humiliating high school mishap from the early ’90s. Paula Abdul, Jaden Smith, and Joey Fatone make cameos in a feature that combines the fictional narrative with real life footage of over-the-top punishments and callbacks to classic moments from the series.

Two new releases made noise this box-office weekend while another film rode a nationwide expansion to a place on the top ten as well. The latest Disney/Pixar production, Onward, led the weekend box office with an opening weekend debut of $40 million, easily besting the second-place film by nearly $25 million.
Last week’s number one film, The Invisible Man, dropped to second place this weekend with $15.2 million, giving the horror film a two-week total of $52.7 million. In third place was the weekend’s second new film, the Ben Affleck-led drama The Way Back. The film inspired enough people to see it that it managed to pick up $8.5 million during its opening weekend.
Meanwhile, Sonic the Hedgehog fell from second-place to fourth making $8.0 million. Still, the film has made $140.8 million through four weeks, so the little guy probably doesn’t feel like he’s spinning his wheels too badly at this point.

Welcome back one and all to the weekly box office report! As is always the case, each and every Sunday you can expect a look at what made the most money in theaters, as well as just how all of the new releases fared. Once again this week, we have a rather small batch of of new releases opening, mainly consisting of Onward and The Way Back, at least in wide release. They both went up against the second weekend of horror hit The Invisible Man. How did they all do? Read on to see how the weekend turned out… Taking the top honors this week, though with a muted haul, was Pixar’s Onward. The likely Academy Award player in Best Animated Feature made an estimated $40 million, which isn’t bad. However, probably in part due to the Coronavirus scare, some families opted to stay home. Kelly Reichardt’s ‘First Cow’ Opens Strong as Specialty Box Office Fans Leave Homes and Show Support
This weekend, the specialized world showed no signs of public resistance to moviegoing. That so much of the audience is older, and perhaps more wary, is encouraging.
The successes include the opening of the acclaimed “First Cow” (A24), a couple of niche limited openers (“The Booksellers” from Greenwich with the best per-theater number), the successful expansion of “Emma” (Focus), and decent continued results for two offbeat wider and younger-audience titles: “Impractical Jokers” (truTV) and “My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising” (Funimation).
However, the complete failure of two higher-end titles — “Wendy” (Searchlight) and “Greed” (Sony Pictures Classics) — as they expanded in their second weekends showed audiences are picky and the success rate remains challenging.
Specialized distributors are as concerned about possible theater shutdowns as anyone in the business. At this point, no changes have been made, but sources say this has gone from a day-to-day review to an hour by hour.

Disney-Pixar’s fantasy film “Onward” is dominating North American moviegoing this weekend, opening with $40 million at 4,310 locations, estimates showed on Saturday.
The figure is at the low end of pre-release forecasts, which had pegged “Onward” for a launch in the $40-45 million range. The movie centers on a pair of teenage elf brothers — voiced by Chris Pratt and Tom Holland — on a quest to resurrect their deceased father with a magical staff. Opening day audiences gave “Onward” an A- Cinemascore.
“Onward” is delivering results in the same neighborhood as Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur,” which opened with $39 million in North America and finished its run with $123 million domestically and $332 million in worldwide box office for the lowest total of Pixar’s 21 titles. “Onward” is the first Pixar movie to debut during the March/early spring corridor; all other Pixar titles have been released in the summer or November.

A new film not only led the weekend box office, but it also displaced the former number one film by $13.0 million. The horror film, The Invisible Man debuted over the weekend, earning $29 million. The film seems to be a hit with both critics and audiences and could possibly enjoy a healthy stay in the top ten. But, only time will tell.
With a strong opening weekend, The Invisible Man easily bested second-place finisher, and former first-place film, Sonic the Hedgehog, which only brought in $16 million. Despite finishing in second-place, the film has managed to earn $128.3 million in its first three weeks of release, so it’s doubtful anyone is too upset about the fall from the top spot.
Similarly dropping a spot over the weekend was the Harrison Ford vehicle The Call of the Wild, which added $24.8 million to give the film a two-week total of $45.9 million and a third-place finish on our countdown.

The weekend box office brought both good and bad news. Universal’s “The Invisible Man” exceeded expectations with a $29 million opening, but the overall box-office total fell under $100 million, a rarity between Super Bowl Sunday and Labor Day.
And strangely this weekend, both “My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising” (Funimation) and “Impractical Jokers: The Movie” (truTV) showed up in the Top Ten.
Meanwhile exhibitors are facing rising concerns about the coronavirus pandemic and its possible impact on public activities like moviegoing ahead. The case for some impact comes from recent declines after a strong start to 2020 that left the totals up 6% after two months. That’s down sharply from initial weeks, and comes with the bonus of the leap year Saturday that accounts for 40% of the higher number. So the bloom is off the rose.
However, results for the first two months are usually not a good guide for a full year’s prospects.

“Emma” (Focus) had a strong initial second weekend expansion, but the top news comes from two unexpected niche releases. The top 10 successes of “My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising” (Funimation) and the second weekend of “Impractical Jokers: The Movie” (truTV) suggest new paths to theatrical success.
An exclusive date for “Saint Frances” (Oscilloscope) stood out in a weekend that saw poor initial play for “Wendy” (Searchlight) and “Greed” (Sony Pictures Classics) — films with top directors and mediocre or worse reviews.

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising (Funimation) – Metacritic: 71
$5,109,000 in 1,260 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $4,054; Cumulative: $8,482,000
Where did this come from? This second film from the popular Manga action comic opened on Wednesday from Funimation, a Sony Pictures-related company, with the top gross opening day. But rather than just play like an event as similar films, it continued its run to end up as the surprise #4 film overall this weekend.

Impractical Jokers: The Movie isn’t pranking us when it comes to their box office performance. After having a stellar opening last week, the big-screen adaptation of WarnerMedia’s truTV prank show expanded from 357 to nearly 1,800 theaters and earned an estimated $3,545,000, to bring its cume to $6.6 million. The movie has now cracked the top 10 at the box office, right behind Birds of Prey and ahead of 1917.
The pic debuted to an impressive $2.6 million and had the highest per-screen average among major releases at $7,302. The audience response gave it enough of a boost to expand in its second week out, adding 1,493 theaters in 210 markets. On Friday, it slipped 6%, but then jumped a massive 51% on Saturday from last week.

After several months of weak numbers for horror movies at the box office, Universal/Blumhouse’s “The Invisible Man” has broken the slump with a $29 million opening weekend at the box office, the largest for the genre since “It: Chapter Two” six months ago.
Released on 3,610 screens, “The Invisible Man” had been projected by trackers for a $23-25 million start, but estimates have inched up as the weekend has gone on thanks to strong word of mouth for this terrifying #MeToo spin on the H.G. Wells novel. The film has a 91% Rotten Tomatoes critics score, while audiences gave it B+ on CinemaScore and 4/5 on Postrak. Age demographics have been fairly even with 18-24 accounting for 29% and 25-34 accounting for 32%.

Elisabeth Moss’ “The Invisible Man” scared up a solid $26 million opening weekend at 3,610 North American locations, estimates showed Saturday.
Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog,” which had led for the past two weekends, will finish second with about $15 million at 4,177 sites for a 17-day total of roughly $127 million. The sophomore frame of Disney-20th Century’s “Call of the Wild” is heading for third with $13 million at 3,865 venues and is nearing $46 million for its first 10 days.
Universal-Blumhouse’s “The Invisible Man” dominated Friday’s moviegoing with about $9.8 million and generated a B+ Cinemascore from opening-day patrons. The thriller is coming in above studio forecasts, which had been north of $20 million this weekend.
The film, made for a modest $7 million, is written and direct by Leigh Whannell, co-creator of the “Saw” franchise. Set in the San Francisco region, the movie is a modern take on Universal’s 1933 Claude Rains film, which...

Eight weeks into the year and we've already seen six films released that fall within the horror and/or thriller genre category and of them only Sony's two entries -- Fantasy Island and The Grudge -- have managed to deliver double digit openings. This weekend, Universal and Blumhouse's The Invisible Man looks to not only top those marks, but deliver the highest opening for a horror title since last year's It Chapter Two.
Following the disappointing debut of The Mummy back in 2017, a film intended to serve as the first film in Universal's proposed Dark Universe, the studio quickly shelved that idea and now, with the release of The Invisible Man this weekend, the studio offers a standalone feature in which writer-director Leigh Whannell brings his own spin to the story. Starring Elisabeth Moss, the film arrives with strong tracking and the studio anticipating a debut in the upper $20 million range,...

It’s not as if Universal and Blumhouse anticipated the opening of its gaslight thriller The Invisible Man to coincide with the guilty verdict handed down this week to movie mogul Harvey Weinstein in his sexual misconduct trial. But the Leigh Whannell directed and written feature arrives in cinemas at a moment when the #MeToo movement again occupies center stage.
Tracking has been seeing this R-rated thriller starring Elisabeth Moss in the mid-$20 million range for quite some time, but coming away from the ravenous response of Monday’s Hollywood premiere, it’s clear that Universal and Blumhouse have another socially conscious genre film on their hands that could hit a nerve and send this film into Get Out box office territory. That Jordan Peele Oscar-winning blockbuster opened to $33.37M. Interestingly enough, Invisible Man is opening in the same final February weekend spot as Get Out did three years ago.
