"Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" is an animated spin-off of "Cyberpunk 2077," a blockbuster sci-fi dystopian video game that itself was made in a pretty dystopian manner. It's also the newest show by Hiroyuki Imaishi, the director of "Gurren Lagann" and "Promare."
Imaishi started as an animator and director at the legendary studio Gainax before co-founding Studio Trigger with fellow Gainax staff including Yoh Yoshinari. His work features bombastic action, rude humor, and enough lens flares to give J.J. Abrams a headache. Imaishi's work is popular among international fans, some of whom were inspired to become animators themselves. Others argue that Imaishi's descendants, such as Yoshimichi Kameda and Imaishi's protege Akira Amemiya, have long surpassed him as animator and director respectively. Even so, "Edgerunners" holds its own in what is set to be a very busy fall for the anime industry.
Imaishi crams his animated works with references to shows, movies and comics he likes.

The duo of director Hiroyuki Imaishi and writer Kazuki Nakashima, along with Studio Trigger seem to produce only masterpieces, since their three works include “Gurren Lagann“, “Promare” and the present title.
The story takes place in Honnouji Academy, a high school in Tokyo Bay, where Satsuki Kiryuin is the head of a rather powerful council governing over hundreds of students. Just below her are the “Four Devas”, a quartet of also quite strong students, who are dedicated to her, despite having their own agendas, on occasion. What is the unique thing about Honnouji, however, is that the students are wearing Goku Uniforms, special suits created from a material known as Life Fibers, which are bestowed to them based on their skills and accomplishments. Furthermore, the better suit a student wears, the better situated in the area is his/her family, in a society that is rather segregated.

It’s been nearly a year since the last info dump for the highly-anticipated “Cyberpunk 2077” video game. Polish developer CD Projekt Red unveiled a suite of new information about the upcoming game in a 25-minute video on Thursday, including a new gameplay trailer and a surprise announcement that Netflix will premiere an anime based on the game’s world in 2022.
“Cyberpunk 2077,” which features Keanu Reeves in a starring role and hails from the developers behind the popular “The Witcher” video games, has been billed as a sprawling, gritty open world adventure set in a futuristic dystopia where people modify their bodies with cybernetic implants. Players will play as V, a customizable mercenary who is on the hunt for an implant that could offer immortality. “Cyberpunk 2077,” first announced in 2012 and based on the tabletop role-playing game that was first released in 1988, has been delayed multiple times but is scheduled to release on November 19 on Windows,...

The first of the three masterful collaborations the duo of Hiroyuki Imaishi as director and veteran playwright Kazuki Nakashima as script-writer gave us (“Kill la Kill” and “Promare” are the other two) was a truly game-changing title, which reinvigorated the rather preterit at the time mecha genre in ways no one could have imagined.
The main story, which is not based on a manga in another unique aspect of the title, takes place in a fictional future where Earth has become an almost complete dystopia, ruled by the Spiral King, Lord Genome, who has forced mankind to live in isolated subterranean villages for generations. To achieve that, apart from spreading lies about the surface of the earth being extremely dangerous, he also uses his beast men, who, using mechas, terrorize anyone who dares actually leave the underground villages. Gkids has acquired the North American distribution rights to the film “Lupin the 3rd: The First,” a Japanese anime film based on the long-running character and franchise from the Monkey Punch manga books and many animated films.
“Lupin the 3rd: The First” opened in Japan last December and will get a 2020 theatrical release from Gkids in both its original Japanese and in a new English language dub. It’s notable as the first film in the “Lupin III” franchise to be animated in 3D CGI rather than hand-drawn.
Lupin III is a “gentleman thief” character who dates back to 1967 and has spawned manga books, TV shows, video games, a theme park ride, musical adaptations and feature films. American audiences might recognize the character as the subject of the debut film from animation master Hayao Miyazaki, 1979’s “The Castle of Cagliostro.”

In today’s film news roundup, box office reporting is going away temporarily, Hollywood Teamsters have job opportunities, comedy “The Incoherents” finds a home and Fathom Events postpones more than a dozen releases.
Box Office Reporting
The coronavirus pandemic and the closure of most movie theaters has led to a temporary suspension of North American box office reporting by Comscore, the industry’s box office tracker.
The decision came after Disney announced it would stop global box office reporting, given the current large number of theater shutdowns around the globe.
“Due to this unprecedented situation, Comscore will be temporarily suspending our usual Sunday North American Top 10 Estimates, Global chart and commentary,” Comscore said in a statement. “We will update the status of studio reporting on Monday.”
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, told Variety that there will be some revenues this weekend, thanks partly to drive-in movie theaters that have remained open.

The Annies, started by animation organization Asifa-Hollywood nearly 50 years ago as a dinner to honor toon veterans Max and Dave Fleischer, has today morphed into a major awards season event, honoring achievements in 32 categories as well as a number of juried kudos.
“We keep growing every year,” says Frank Gladstone, executive director of Asifa-Hollywood. This year it will be held on Jan. 25 at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus, its home for the past several years.
“Every year, for the last few years, we’ve had between 10% and 20% growth. Not only in how much it costs, because that’s true too, but in the amount of submissions. This year, we had almost 2,000 submissions. That’s a lot of submissions!”
More entries, more award categories, more impact, more cachet.

Hong Kong’s highest-grossing film director, Dante Lam, returns this 2020 Lunar New Year with Eddie Peng-starring action-thriller, “The Rescue.” With over 700 million Rmb (100million Usd) and film locations in both Xiamen and Mexico, “The Rescue” claims to be the biggest Chinese production set at sea. Despite the impressive titles however, what should be a two-hour-long, tightly-choreographed dance with death slips up at the seams.
“The Rescue” follows the story of the captain of an Emergency Response Unit of the Chinese Coast Guard, Gao Qian (Eddie Peng). After years of peacefully leading his all-male troop, his team suddenly gets shaken up when individual members leave, one by one — allowing beautiful, but outspoken female pilot, Fang Yuling (Xin Zhilei), to substitute them instead. While Gao must balance this new voice on his team, the single father must also care for his shy, musically-gifted son CongCong (Zhang Jingyi). Though poop jokes, bubbling romantic tension,...

In the innovative Netflix animated film I Lost My Body, a severed hand skitters across the streets of Paris trying to reunite with its missing anatomical companion. Whether that hand winds up grasping an Oscar is up to Academy voters, in a year when a record 32 contenders qualified for the Best Animated Feature race.
I Lost My Body is an original film, but more than likely a sequel will come away with the Oscar: either Toy Story 4, Frozen 2 or How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, the third and final film in the Dragon series.
Walt Disney Studios once again finds itself in prime contention, with the fourth installment in the Pixar Toy Story franchise, which saw the addition of a new character, the spork Forky, voiced by Tony Hale, and an expanded role for Bo Peep (Annie Potts). Toy Story 3 (2010) remains the only sequel to win...

The delicate dance between fire and ice spins out of control in highly-anticipated animated film “Promare” (2019). Director Imaishi Hiroyuki and well-beloved animation Studio Trigger (“Little Witch Academia”) have blessed the film with their characteristic low-frame, extravagant poses, sharply defined character designs, and of course — its self-indulgent giant mecha machines. While the film is sure to please loyal fans, “Promare” fails – at the same time – in truly creating something new, and instead falls back on a hackneyed script sadly telling of the film’s low budget.
“Promare” is distributed by Gkids in the United States, and Anime Limited in the UK. “Promare” opens in UK cinemas on 26th November (dubbed) with subbed screenings from 29th November

From the moment Studio Trigger first unleashed “Kill la Kill” on the world, we’ve been enthralled by their unique mix of intense, flamboyant action and well-developed characters that have made it and the likes of “Ssss.Gridman” such celebrated fan favourites. Anyone already familiar with their work may have had an idea of the undiluted joy that awaits them, yet Studio Trigger’s first feature film exceeds expectations as a culmination of Imaishi’s work that needs to be experienced sprawling across the big screen.
Burning bright at the core of “Promare” are its two central characters, the self-proclaimed moron Galo, and the terrorist leader Lio. Fuelled by passion and a tendency to act without thinking, Galo’s mix of charm and macho charisma makes him the perfect pilot for this adrenaline rush of a film, and a compelling contrast to Lio’s cool, androgynous persona. When their fates...

Clang, clang, clang went the box office! The Roadside Attractions’ musical biopic Judy starring Renee Zellweger had an over-the-rainbow debut this weekend to the tune of an estimated $3,091,417. Even more good news — the stellar opening landed Judy in the #7 spot in the top 10 movies for the weekend.
The Rupert Goold-directed film based on the life of the legendary Judy Garland premiered on 461 screens and had an estimated per-screen average of $6,705 in North America. Of those screens, 376 were in the Us, and they netted a higher estimate, with a per-screen average of $7,334. We are hearing the film brought in solid numbers in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, DC, Atlanta, Phoenix, Miami and San Diego, making it a strong start for the film.
Roadside Attractions co-founder Howard Cohen told Deadline that you never know how films in the specialty box office space will perform, even if they have strong buzz.

It was a record weekend for Focus Features that saw Downton Abbey not only top the weekend box office, but it became the studio's largest opener ever, topping $30 million. The weekend's fellow new releases — Ad Astra and Rambo: Last Blood — delivered on expectations and are in a neck-and-neck battle for runner-up position and we'll have to wait for actuals to tell the full story on Monday afternoon.
With an estimated $31 million, Focus Features's Downton Abbey topped the weekend box office, giving the studio their largest opening weekend ever. Previously, Insidious Chapter 3 was the studio's record opener with $22.7 million followed by London Has Fallen, also making this their first release to ever top $30 million in nearly 20 years of film distribution. The film played to a crowd that was 74% female and of the total audience, 60% were aged 35 or older. Working in the film's favor was a positive, "A" CinemaScore from opening day...

All was fairly quiet on the specialty box office front this week, with the debut of just a handful of films. The most notable of the bunch was Matt Tyrnauer’s riveting Where’s My Roy Cohn? Other openers this weekend included a Loro, as well as Gunpowder & Sky’s horror-comedy Villains, starring It Chapter Two‘s Bill Skarsgård and Kyra Sedgwick, which had openings that were decent, but nothing earth-shattering.
Sony Pictures Classics feature documentary Where’s My Roy Cohn? opened exclusively in New York and Los Angeles on four screens, and is estimated to rake in $42,364. Deadline learned that it performed better in New York than it did in Los Angeles — which is probably because the ruthless Donald Trump mentor was more of a New York figure. Nonetheless, Spc hopes to add to its box office stack once Roy Cohn continues to expand next week.

Anime maniacs have been waiting for this day: Eight years ago, Hiroyuki Imaishi co-founded Studio Trigger with the goal of one day hatching a feature as wild and innovative as his TV series “Gurren Lagann” and “Kill la Kill.” Now he has. Hiroyuki Imaishi is–in the very best way–one of animation’s finest ambassadors of Adhd. His 2004 directorial debut, Dead Leaves, is a masterpiece of sci-fi action insanity: 50 minutes of delirious stylized motion, featuring ultra-angular “superflat” designs combining the most expressive deformities of Eastern and Western comics and cartoons; a psychedelic adrenaline rush that diffuses the full density of a pulpy jailbreak action flick into half the running time and several times the visual scope. It is the pure cinematic embodiment of a film viewer, and filmmaker, whose bountiful imagination strikes dynamite creative synthesis with a short-fuse attention span. Dead Leaves was a minor event at the time, consigned to direct-to-dvd release overseas and ultimately, perhaps, too aggressively weird and explicit to capture the fancy of either mainstream critics or otaku. But 15 years later, Imaishi–who found breakout success in TV anime and co-founded his own studio, Trigger–has become...

All cinema is wonderful, but there’s a certain wonder that’s only possible through animation. We have almost grown numb to how realistic computer-graphic animation has advanced, but there are few things akin to the experience of being transported to a dreamworld that lets its colors wash over and swallow you whole. Similarly, anime has reached some staggering heights of what’s possible through traditional animation, and in many ways Promare sets a new standard in that area, delivering visuals that will be discussed for years and strive to be matched and surpassed. It’s a gorgeous, fun fever dream of a movie that captures the exact spirit of what makes anime so magical and powerful.

Launched in 2006, the Cine Fan Summer International Film Festival (SummerIFF) premieres new films with an added appeal to the younger audience in Hong Kong. The screenings of around 30 titles from pop Asian fare to restored classics to award-winning titles freshly from world-class film festivals are held in August every year. SummerIFF arouses the interest of public in watching films and continues to develop new audiences for Hkiff. Filmmakers and critics are invited to attend meet-the-audience sessions to facilitate cultural exchange.

Injecting an intoxicating shot of frantic energy and sleek color directly into your pupils, the postapocalyptic sci-fi action saga “Promare” plays like an anime-induced euphoric trip.
Marking the first feature release for both Japanese outfit Studio Trigger and its co-founder and director Hiroyuki Imaishi, this visual potion spiced with fiery duels and supernatural machinery is at its most potent when taken without much concern for its bewildering mechanics.
Imaishi is best known for fan-favorite shows “Kill la Kill” and “Gurren Lagann,” works that feature campy erotic innuendos mostly missing from “Promare.” And he carries over the vividly graphic style of animation and fast-paced editing from those episodic hits into his theatrical debut, based on a screenplay by longtime collaborator Kazuki Nakashima (“Batman Ninja”).
