As Klaus Voormann recalls, the bass player, artist, and friend of the Beatles had no idea what was about to hit him when he arrived at Emi Studios (later known as Abbey Road) one day in late May of 1970. All he knew was that George Harrison was about to start a new project and that Ringo Starr would be drumming. Before he realized it, Voormann was rehearsing a bunch of unheard Harrison songs — one after another, 15 in all, including “What Is Life,” “Awaiting on You All,” and “My Sweet Lord.

Do not adjust your WiFi settings. No, you are not experiencing a severe case of Deja Streaming-vu. HBO Max’s list of new releases for May 2021 are indeed highlighted by two very recent WarnerMedia hits.
For starters, Tenet finally makes its long-awaited HBO Max this month. Mark your calendars as May 1 is the day that you can finally watch Christopher Nolan’s latest cerebral thriller. Of course, Tenet already had its theatrical release, but obviously that was not really an option for many of us. In addition to Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984 makes its triumphant return to HBO Max this month on May 13. The Wonder Woman sequel already premiered on HBO Max this past December, now it’s getting a second run on the streamer.
In terms of newer originals, May is relatively light for HBO Max. The Jean Smart-starring comedy Hacks premieres on May 13. The latest Adventure Time...

A world of vampires, werewolves and wizards is on its way to screens big and small.
Married writer-producers Eric Heisserer (“Shadow and Bone”) and Christine Boylan (“The Punisher”) and production company Hivemind have partnered with game publisher Paradox Interactive to develop the World of Darkness story universe for film and television.
Launched in 1991 with the tabletop roleplaying game “Vampire: The Masquerade,” the World of Darkness universe includes other properties like “Werewolf: The Apocalypse,” “Mage: The Ascension,” “Orpheus,” and “Hunter: The Reckoning,” and has expanded to video games, comic books, novels, virtual reality and card and board games. From the outset, the franchise has set itself apart in the world of science-fiction/fantasy by putting players inside the shoes — or claws, or wings — of a vast and interconnected coterie of monsters who live amongst humanity, and then forcing them to make complicated moral decisions about how to slake their character’s darkest urges.

Never let it be said that Brian Michael Bendis doesn’t know how to keep busy. The prolific writer has had his hands full since coming to DC in 2018. Arriving with much fanfare on both Superman and Action Comics, Bendis also relaunched Young Justice, co-created a new DC mainstay in Naomi, wrote the excellent Batman: Universe, shepherded the Event Leviathan mini, and more. All of these books introduced new characters, re-tooled existing ones (such as aging up young Jonathan Kent to his mid-teens), and set various wheels in motion throughout the DC Universe.
And in the midst of that he also rebooted the team with the largest roster in all of comics, the one that brings with it the most complex web of continuity, the one that requires the most amount of worldbuilding by virtue of its 31st century setting.

2020, to say the least, has been a complete shitshow. The year has been weird, long, depressing, anger-inducing, and frustrating. But that dumpster fire has made the shiny parts shine bright in a way that made all the crap disappear for a few moments or hours at a time. And for that, I am grateful.
In a year that showed us that time actually has no meaning whatsoever, I know I’m not remembering half of the stuff that I watched and loved, but here are just some of the things that gave me joy, comfort, awe, or just some time away from what has become “the norm.”
Gretel & Hansel
The films of Osgood Perkins are so totally my jam. Gretel & Hansel is no exception. His fantastically creepy and twisted take on the story of two children getting lost in the woods is also a decidedly feminist piece that puts a...

The end is nucking figh. The light is at the end of the tunnel. This is not the beginning or the end, but the beginning of the end. Maybe not any time soon but perhaps some time this year we will be able to gather en masse and in house and go back to the traditional film festival formats. For the moment though we will have to be patient as knock this pandemic crap down a few notches to ensure that we can do so safely. In light of the current situation the Final Girls Berlin Film Festival has chosen to go virtual next month. The four day event will include screenings of Time of Moulting, The Returned, Darkness, The Stylist and 12 Hour...

KollywoodFrom Cs Amudhan's 'Rendavathu Padam' to Seenu Ramasamy's 'Idam Porul Yeval', there are quite a few films that have been delayed for many years.Anjana ShekarDirector Balaji Tharaneetharan’s Oru Pakka Kathai was released on Zee5 on December 25, 2020. The film took shape close to the end of 2014 and the post production was completed by 2016, but it didn't see the light of day. The director, who made his debut with the smashing hit Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom (2012), which also gave actor Vijay Sethupathi his big break, made and released Seethakathi in the meantime. But, Oru Pakka Kathai, starring Kalidas Jayaram and Megha Akash, continued to wait for release. “The pain of it not releasing was always there. A lot of them worked on it and it must have been disappointing for them too. I'm now very happy that it is finally releasing,” the director tells Tnm. Oru Pakka Kathai, a...

KollywoodMore music albums than films released this year but we're not complaining.Anjana ShekarThe year is about to end and cinema lovers have had to forego their usual diet of new films in theatres. However, the good news is that we’ve had more music album releases than films this year, a consequence of producers and filmmakers hoping to keep their fans engaged despite the dry spell. It is only befitting that we chart out a playlist that sums up 2020. More so because the timeline that comes with pre-covid and post-covid distinctions could be disorienting for many, this writer included. After all, if you thought Ilaiyaraaja’s 'Unna Nenachu' for Mysskin’s Psycho released in 2019, can we blame you? Actually, that was a trick question. The film released in 2020 but the album was out in December last year, so worry not. Nevertheless, films that released in theatres before the Covid-...

When DC Comics announced their Black Label offshoot many though it would be a replacement for the Vertigo line, telling all-new stories and creating all-new characters and universes. But in the end it turned out to be something more interesting – a place where writers could explore the familar characters of DC’s stable in new and intersting ways. Sort of an “Elseworlds” universe, only one where writers were free to target a more mature audience and tell more adult stories in a premium format… And it’s turned out to be something of a huge success; right from the get-go with the controversial Batman Damned and it’s bat-dong, to the likes of Superman: Year One and Harleen – a look at the Joker’s sidekick-come-love interest.

ReviewThe film comes with the fair warning that 'the devil is in the details', and the viewer is required to do quite a bit of cerebral work.Sowmya RajendranIn an industry saturated with horror comedies and thrillers with predictable jump scares, V Vignarajan's Andhaghaaram, now streaming on Netflix, comes as a breath of fresh air though most of it is set inside closed spaces. The film revolves around a blind government clerk in a library, a psychiatrist with a troubled past and a depressed cricketer. The title means 'darkness' and often, as a viewer, you're left searching for the light which will make sense of all the details. Beginning with black and white shots of different people receiving phone calls on their Lan line, the film slowly unravels a series of bewildering events. Vinod (Arjun Das), the cricketer, senses a presence in his room that he's convinced is a malevolent...
