'Tis the season for renewals and cancellations! Every May, the major networks and streamers give their Upfronts presentations, which teases their upcoming slate of content, and that usually comes hand in hand with shows being renewed, shows being canceled, and shows left precariously on the bubble. We've recently learned a lot of news about what's to come for Netflix!

While some networks remain tight-lipped about renewals, Netflix didn't waste the opportunity to make lots of announcements. The streamer's Upfronts presentation in May 2025 brought the exciting reveals of newly announced shows and movies, as well as the renewals of six hit and fan-favorite scripted series and two unscripted series. These are the six scripted comedies and dramas the streamer renewed:

If you’re ready for more idyllic scenery, swooning romance and life-or-death drama, good news: “Sullivan’s Crossing” Season 3 is finally here. Based on the novels by “Virgin River” author Robyn Carr, the series follows young neurosurgeon Maggie (Morgan Kohan) back to her hometown in Sullivan’s Crossing after her life in Boston falls apart.

Season 1 found her torn between small town charms and the life she built in Boston, but Maggie started to reconnect with her long estranged father, Sully (Scott Patterson), and found an unexpected connection with a new local, Cal (Chad Michael Murray), who left his practice as a lawyer and came to Sullivan’s Crossing after his own heartbreaking life upheavals.

Season 2 really honed in on Maggie’s pull between the two lives and deepened the roots she set down in Sullivan’s Crossing in Season 1, strengthening her bond with Sully and falling even more for Cal.

Amazon Prime Video’s “Legally Blonde” prequel series has added five recurring guest stars, Variety has learned.

Chloe Wepper, David Burtka, Brad Harder, Kayla Maisonet, and Lisa Yamada have all joined the upcoming prequel.

As previously announced, the show will follow Elle Woods during her high school years. Lexi Minetree stars as Elle. Additional cast members include: June Diane Raphael, Tom Everett Scott, Gabrielle Policano, Jacob Moskovitz, Chandler Kinney, Zac Looker, Jessica Belkin, Logan Shroyer, and Amy Pietz.

Wepper has been cast as Elle’s chemistry teacher and high school cheer team choreographer Ms. Burke. Burtka has been cast as Elle’s neighbor, Chad, while Harder has been cast as Chad’s husband, Charlie. Maisonet and Yamada will play Tiffany and Amber respectively, friends in Elle’s Bel Aire high school circle.

Wepper is repped by Ope Partners. Burtka is repped by Innovative Artists. Harder is repped by Play Management Inc.

Lisa Yamada (The Bold and the Beautiful), Chloe Wepper (The Rookie), David Burtka (How I Met Your Mother), Brad Harder (Supernatural) and Kayla Maisonet (The Rookie) are set for key recurring roles in Elle, Prime Video’s upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series, starring Lexi Minetree as Elle. The series hails from the film franchise’s star Reese Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine banner, part of Candle Media.

Created by Laura Kittrell, Elle follows Elle Woods (Minetree) in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film. The series is set years before the events in the first movie, which kicked off as Elle Woods (Witherspoon) graduated from college and headed to Harvard Law to pursue a legal career.

We might be heading back to the past in Virgin River season 7, according to the latest post from season 6 guest star Callum Kerr. In the post, the actor seemed to hint that he could be coming back to the series for another guest appearance, but his tease also has us wondering if Netflix has finally made a decision about that long in-development prequel series.

Earlier this week, Kerr posted a photo of himself standing in front of a black background with Virgin River and Netflix written on it multiple times. He's all smiles, which seems to mirror the sentiment of his caption: "We running this back?" To further solidify the fact that he's teasing fans about his potential return, Kerr used the smirking emoji before tagging both the show and the streamer.

Exclusive: Paradigm has signed Virgin River and The Good Doctor director Felipe Rodriguez for representation.

Rodriguez – a Montreal-born Spanish director – is known for his work at U.S. networks and streamers, and is currently directing the season finale of Netflix’s romantic drama series Virgin River.

He has directed pilots such as Citytv’s Hudson & Rex, BYUtv’s Ruby and the Well and full seasons of Netflix horror Slasher: Guilty Party and Omni crime drama Blood and Water: Fire & Ice, as directing episodes of ABC medical drama The Good Doctor. Most recently, he completed a stylistical overhaul for Hudson & Rex‘s seventh season.

Of course, that involves their intention to start a family, and we'll get to that season 6 cliffhanger in a minute. But first things first, Mel and Jack have to move into their new home, and thanks to Alexandra Breckenridge, we just got a first look!

According to Netflix insider site What’s on Netflix, season seven is currently in production and will wrap up filming on June 26, 2025.

Filming for season six spanned from February-May, 2024, and that season was able to debut just a few months later in December of 2024. It took a total of 7 months in post-production for season six’s debut.

If we’re using a similar timeframe, it seems like Virgin River season 7 could end up debuting very early in 2026. Following the season six math, season seven could debut as early as late January 2026, which would be seven months after the June 26, 2025 filming end date.

Netflix is the leading streaming platform, there really is no doubt about that! The streamer has so much good original content, and there's so many shows that we're excited to see back on our screens. And though 2025 has gotten off to a great start so far, there's still so many highly-anticipated Netflix shows whose new seasons we're eagerly waiting for.

Of course one could argue that Stranger Things season 5, aka the final season, is the biggest one that has all the anticipation around it. It's been confirmed that we'll return to Hawkins one last time in 2025, but there's still no confirmed release date, or a release month even.

The Writers Guild of America asked members on Friday to uphold disciplinary actions against four of their brethren who are accused of violating guild rules during the 2023 strike.

Three of the writers — Edward John Drake, Roma Roth and Julie Bush — are accused of performing forbidden “writing services” in violation of union solidarity. A fourth member, Tim Doyle, is accused of making an off-color joke in a Facebook group of fellow writers.

The WGA West board voted to expel Drake and Roth, the severest form of punishment for guild rule violations. Bush was given a temporary suspension and a lifetime ban on serving as a strike captain, while Doyle was given a public censure.

All four are appealing the discipline to the general membership. Three other members, who were not identified, were also found guilty by trial committees of writing during the strike. Those members elected not to appeal.

Netflix will no longer make games for “Netflix Stories,” its catalog of interactive fiction games mainly based on romance and dating-focused series. The streamer confirmed that its new gaming strategy will now stick to mobile titles across party games, narrative games, kids games and mainstream games, as well as more games that can be played on TV. As part of the reorg, an undetermined number of staffers have been laid off from the division.

Updated, March 27, 2025: A new trailer, set to “Texas Sun” by Khruangbin and Leon Bridges, has arrived for Netflix’s latest Wester TV series Ransom Canyon, based on the book by Jodi Thomas.

“In Ransom Canyon,” Josh Duhamel’s voice says over shots of ranchers riding horses, the main thoroughfare of the small Texas town, high school football games and more. “Everyone’s running from something, or running to something.”

Duhamel stars as Staten Kirkland, one of the main ranchers in the titular town, who is part of a large ensemble of the new Netflix show, out April 17.

“What’s up with that guy anyway?” Jack Schumacher’s Yancy Grey, who can be seen later on in the trailer risking it all for a rodeo ride, asks Cap Fuller (James Brolin) about the stoic Staten.

Here’s some extra-sweet news you won’t even hear at Paige’s Bakeaway: Virgin River has begun filming Season 7, and it’s welcoming two new faces.

Two photos from the set, which you can see below, show as production starts on the new batch of episodes — which means finding out what’s next for the beloved Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson) as they take the next steps in their relationship. “There’s a lot more to go here with these characters,” showrunner Patrick Sean Smith tells Tudum.

Sara Canning (The Vampire Diaries) joins the cast as ex-cop Victoria, who was shot in the line of duty and now works for the state medical board as an investigator. Victoria comes to Virgin River to look into Doc’s practice but runs into a friend she wouldn’t mind catching up with … or maybe even pursuing something more.

Martin Henderson made the announcement himself with a video shared on Instagram on March 12, in which he unboxes a gift from Netflix in his trailer. The streaming service gifted the cast rechargeable hand warmers for those cold filming days in Vancouver, lip balm, face moisturizer, and a miniature suitcase. But it wasn't just about the gifts from Netflix.

In the video, Henderson tells fans that he wants to make Virgin River season 7 "the best season yet" for the fans, since the success of the show all comes down to those who watch. He expresses his excitement to get back to work and his continued gratitude for all the fans who keep tuning in season after season.

Get ready for some more small-town charm and feel-good drama because Virgin River is officially in production for Season 7. Since its debut on Netflix in 2019, the romantic drama has consistently released a season each year, and it looks like the makers are committed to maintaining that schedule. Charmaine, Charmaine, Charmaine... She's the character Virgin River fans love to hate, and it's been that way from the very beginning. As a foil or "villain" for the main heroes of the Netflix original romantic drama series, she's expertly written and fun to watch. But she's admittedly a character who's hard to root for because she makes a lot of irredeemable decisions, one being lying to Jack about being pregnant with his twin sons. Hammersley on Friday shared a recent text exchange with Virgin River showrunner Patrick Sean Smith in which she presses him for answers about Charmaine’s fate in the Netflix drama’s upcoming seventh season.

Netflix has ordered a new six-part supernatural drama limited series set to be filmed in Newfoundland in Canada.

Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the new limited series today with a quote from Netflix Canada’s content directors, Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury. They said, “Jesse’s bold, ambitious vision offers thrills galore, with the heart of a family drama. We can’t wait to transport our members to coastal Newfoundland with this timely story about community, resilience, and adaptability.”

Plot details are scarce, but the trades state that the series will be set in a remote town in Newfoundland, Canada’s easternmost province. That town is “terrorized by a mysterious sea creature, and a hard-bitten fisherman must fight to protect his family, his community, and his vanishing way of life.”

The series has yet to be titled but is being helmed by Jesse McKeown.

If you're a Virgin River fan, then it's no secret that you're waiting ever so impatiently for the series to make its way back to your watch list. The sixth season made its premiere on Netflix back in December 2024, and before that season was even released, the streaming service had already confirmed the beloved romantic drama would be back with the renewal of season 7.

Unfortunately, the wait for Virgin River season 7 might be a little longer than some fans might have hoped. When Netflix shared its upcoming series releases for 2025, Virgin River was left off that list, meaning season 7 could be delayed for release until 2026. But even before cameras have started rolling on the next season, we're already hearing positive updates about the next next season.

The success of The Night Agent is apparently not a one-season phenomenon.

The Netflix thriller recorded its biggest week to date with the opening of its second season. The show amassed 3.11 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Jan. 20-26 (season two premiered Jan. 23), according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings, topping its previous best of 3.06 billion minutes in March 2023.

Nielsen says viewing of season two accounted for 76 percent of the weekly total, which works out to about 2.36 billion minutes.

After making its debut on the streaming charts a week earlier, Apple TV+’s Severance improved a little on that performance with 622 million minutes of viewing (a gain of about 6 percent week to week). That’s the highest weekly total for any Apple TV+ show since Ted Lasso in 2023.

Netflix‘s popular romantic drama Virgin River is preparing for a prequel series, but not all fans are on the same page following showrunner Patrick Smith’s teases about the upcoming spinoff. In an interview with Variety in December, Smith opened up about how the prequel will focus on Mel Monroe’s (Alexandra Breckenridge) parents, Sarah and Everett, played by Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr, respectively.
