Filmmaker and editorial cartoonist Aurel will follow up his César-winner “Josep” with “Desert,” an animated Western set in France’s Cevennes mountain range.
Pitched between a more traditional oater and an “Indiana Jones” style adventure and set in the late 19th century, “Desert” will follow a Mexico-born gunslinger exploring south-central France with a mysterious mission. Rediscovering his family’s ancestral land centuries after the religious wars forced those kinsmen to flee, our caballero soon steps in to protect a local clan from an oppressive landowner and his abusive henchmen.
“We want to bring together two universes that should have nothing to do with one another,” says the filmmaker.
The project will reunite much of the same creative team behind 2020’s award-winning “Josep,” among them screenwriter Jean-Louis Milesi and producer Serge Lalou of Les Films d’Ici Méditerranée, as well as animation studios Les Fées Spéciales in Montpellier and Tchack in Lille.

For some reason, there has yet to be a mainstream Hollywood feature film about Donald Trump dramatizing any aspect of Trump's life, with an actor portraying him.
There have been countless documentaries about Trump, both for him and against him, and various comedians have portrayed him, including Alec Baldwin and later James Austin Johnson on Saturday Night Live.
The Comey Rule, a 2020 Showtime miniseries based on the memoirs of former FBI director James Comey, starred Brendan Gleeson as the 45th president, opposite Jeff Daniels as Comey.
At the same time, quite a few feature films, like The Oath in 2018 and Irresistible and The Hunt in 2020, have attempted to make dramatic hay out of the political controversies of the Trump years.
However, those who have not featured a Trump-based character have not referenced him directly.
However, what the movies have avoided is a direct dramatization of any part of Trump's life,...

After an exhaustive yearlong search to find the show’s next host, Jon Stewart is returning to The Daily Show on a part-time basis, just in time for the 2024 election season. But he won’t be doing it alone. He’ll host Monday night’s broadcast beginning Feb. 12, with a roster of rotating correspondents from Tuesday to Thursday. For some, his return speaks to the dire state of late-night TV.
Stewart left the chair of the satirical news program in 2015, and ever since his absence, the show has taken a dive.

The Daily Show is bringing back beloved former host Jon Stewart on a part-time basis to shepherd the late-night show through the 2024 election season.
Following Trevor Noah’s exit in December 2022, the series spent 2023 relying on a revolving door of special guests and correspondents to hold down the fort while Comedy Central settled on a permanent host. However — despite Roy Wood Jr.’s very public pleadings at the Emmys — The Daily Show has opted not to bring in a full-time host, and instead will have Stewart return for Monday night broadcasts.

“The Problem with Jon Stewart” will not be returning for a Season 3 on Apple TV+, the New York Times has reported. While the talk show was scheduled to begin filming new episodes in the coming weeks, creative differences between Stewart and Apple executives reached an impasse that led to the show’s abrupt ending.
Per the report, plans to cover sensitive topics including China and artificial intelligence in Season 3 raised eyebrows for Apple executives. It also became clear that the looming 2024 election could create even more editorial headaches. The mutual decision was then made to end the show.

The hilarious and adored period sitcom That '70s Show introduced audiences everywhere to the lovable stoner misfits of Point Place, Wisconsin. The series follows a group of six teenagers living in the grooviest decade of all as they deal with adolescence, romance, and overbearing parents while navigating life’s ups and downs. The sitcom was notorious for its depiction of “the circle,” a recurring scene that illustrated the gang’s use of marijuana in Eric Forman’s basement, but without actually ever showing cannabis paraphernalia. That '70s Show addressed many social issues of the time period, such as generational conflict, sexual attitudes, and both fashion and entertainment trends. The program helped launch the careers of many of its talented leads, as the cast members went on to star in an array of hit television shows and films.

Adapted from a recent page-turner by “Based on a True Story” author Delphine de Vigan, “Les enfants sont rois” (“The Children Are Kings”) follows a reality-tv has-been turned mommy vlogger who fills her social media feeds with daily updates about her two precocious children. Dynamic mother-daughter and best friend duo Ginny (Antonia Gentry) and Georgia Miller (Brianne Howey) return in “Ginny & Georgia” Season 2, which gets even more chaotic than the already very complex first season of the Netflix show. Another of Georgia’s past loves enters the mix, she commits some more questionable actions and many other twists and turns develop within the 10 hour-long episodes.
Ginny and her friends are no strangers to the TikTok scene, so some song choices reflect Gen Z’s poppy preferences. The show is also not afraid to explore both the high, happy feelings of life as well as the deeper, darker, lower ones, and it does so sonically with some beautiful choices. Felix Mallard chose a song for an important scene of his, and actress Brianne Howey easily chose a song to embody her character Georgia.

“The X-Files” was TV’s flagship horror/sci-fi series of the 1990s, and was conceived in part by creator Chris Carter as a way to “scare people’s pants off.” And what’s scarier than a real-life villain like Jeffrey Dahmer?
Two years before the show premiered on Fox in 1993, the serial killer (who’s currently played by Evan Peters in Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”) was arrested and his sickening story struck a nerve with people throughout the world. During the second season of “The X-Files,” Carter penned an episode titled “Irresistible” that was a first for the series: it featured no paranormal elements but instead focused on a killer and necrophiliac named Donnie Pfaster (Nick Chinlund) that was loosely based on Dahmer himself. Watch a frightening clip above.

The most surprising thing about Jon Stewart’s recent defense of the comic and podcaster Joe Rogan might have been that it made waves at all.
Stewart, on a podcast affiliated with his Apple TV Plus series “The Problem With Jon Stewart,” called the reaction to claims Rogan has made about Covid-19 vaccines “a mistake.” Stewart compared Rogan, the podcaster and comic, to “dishonest, bad actors,” and said that identifying such people “is so much more important to me.” He added, “You have to engage. Like, how do you not engage with people? The whole point of engagement is, hopefully, clarification… It might be a fool’s errand, but I will never give up on engagement.”

Like, how do you not engage with people? The whole point of engagement is, hopefully, clarification… It might be a fool’s errand, but I will never give up on engagement.”

The opening titles to Jon Stewart’s Apple TV+ series start with a squiggly old tube TV set. Title after potential title appears on the warped screen, before being torn away like the discarded top sheet of a notepad. “The Weekly Show” becomes “The Monthly Show,” “The Annual Show,” and “The Money Grab Show.” When the 4:3 television expands into today’s typical widescreen format, “America” scrolls across in big, block letters like the title card in “Rocky” — before tacking on an apostrophe and turning into “America’s Next Top Stewart.” “A Fine Mess,” “Shit Show,” and even “I Want to Believe Jon Stewart” eventually give way to the actual name: “The Problem with Jon Stewart.”
It’s a nifty little sequence, featuring presumed shout-outs to the show’s lengthy development cycle (remember when Stewart’s next show was animated and headed for HBO?) as well as guesses as to...

William Smith, the action star who tussled with Clint Eastwood in Any Which Way You Can, made a lasting impression as the evil Falconetti on TV miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man and was a regular on the final season of Hawaii Five-o, died July 5 at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, CA. He was 88.
His wife Joanne Cervelli Smith confirmed the death. A cause of death was not disclosed.
Smith was born in Columbia, Mo, in 1933 on his family’s cattle ranch where he grew up surrounded by many beloved horses. Although the Smith family moved to Southern California before he was 10, it was his time spent on the ranch that influenced the roles he’d take during his more than seven decades-long career in TV and film.
He began his career in entertainment as an extra in 1942’s The Ghost of Frankenstein when he was eight years old.

On Monday, “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” made its long-awaited return to in-studio taping with a suitably high-profile guest: Colbert’s former Comedy Central colleague Jon Stewart.
Stewart, who previously hosted “The Daily Show” and inspired “The Colbert Report” spinoff years later, riffed with Colbert about vaccine science and the renewed interest in theories regarding whether the coronavirus originated in a Wuhan lab.
“I think we owe a great debt of gratitude to science,” Stewart said. “Science has, in many ways, helped ease the suffering of this pandemic, which was more than likely caused by science. There’s a novel respiratory coronavirus overtaking Wuhan, China. What do we do? Oh, you know who we could ask? The Wuhan novel respiratory coronavirus lab. The disease is the same name as the lab. Do the Oscars hate comedies? If you look over their 92-year history, with so many infectious films and performances ignored in favor of more “serious” pieces of art, the assumption could be made. This year, faced with the Covid-19 pandemic, and with theaters not being the normal avenue to watch films, moviegoers and industry professionals are viewing releases more differently than ever.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. pushed the Golden Globes to Feb. 28, 2021, the last day of the eligibility window for the Oscars. Long before “fake news” was a rhetorical cudgel for the President to beat his perceived media enemies with, it was a term of endearment for a new breed of satirical news program. As first popularized by Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, news/comedy hybrids first had their moment in the early 2000s and then just never really went away.
Now, after a lengthy hiatus, one of the genre’s godfathers is finally coming back to television. Today Apple TV+ announced that it has inked a multi-year partnership with Jon Stewart to produce content, including a current affairs series a la The Daily Show.
The as-of-yet unnamed series will feature “multiple seasons” of one-hour episodes that cover topics that are part of the national conversation along with Stewart’s existing advocacy work. Each season of the series will be accompanied by a companion podcast that delves further into the chosen topic.

Each season will be accompanied by a companion podcast which will “continue the discussion.” No word on how frequently the new show will air.
The new project falls under a new multiyear first-look deal with Stewart’s company Busboy Productions. Stewart previously had a deal at HBO, which included plans for an animated cable news parody series that was later scrapped.

‘City of Lies.’
Last weekend’s broad new releases in Australian cinemas included a US crime thriller that was completed in 2018, a political satire that went straight to digital in the US and a melancholy UK drama about a marriage breakdown.
Not surprisingly, ticket sales languished as André Rieu’s Magical Maastricht – Together In Music was the only new title to post a decent per screen average.
Through Sunday, the national box office for the year to date stands at $330 million – a catastrophic 67 per cent decline on the $1.01 billion racked up in the same period in 2019.
Tellingly, the highest-grosser at the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace last weekend was the Netflix-commissioned Rebecca, a remake of a 1940 Alfred Hitchcock classic adapted from Daphne du Maurier’s Gothic novel.
Directed by Ben Wheatley, the romantic thriller starring Lily James and Armie Hammer follows a young newlywed who arrives at her widower husband...

One of the best films of 2020 — and the last one I’ll get to see in a theater for who knows how long — Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow” (Lionsgate) sees the director once again turning to the American frontier to tell a story about America now. John Magaro and Orion Lee play two men in pioneer-era Oregon who go into business selling fried-dough “oilycakes” to homesick miners, but find themselves in the crosshairs of the plutocrat who owns the territory’s only source of fresh milk. It’s gorgeous, elegaic, witty, and powerful — and you’ll crave some funnel cakes.
Also available: Director James Sweeney, who also wrote and starred, makes an impressive feature debut with “Straight Up” (Strand Releasing), about a gay man whose lack of relationship success drives him to give women one last shot; two siblings try to fulfill their grandmother’s dying wish in...

VOD is for more than low-budget action movies. Janelle Monae, Millie Bobby Brown, and Jessica Chastain rule this week, starring in three distinctive films available only to home audiences. “Enola Holmes” on Netflix, and “Ava” are new to VOD this week, while the premium-price “Antebellum” is riding high in its second weekend at $19.99.
“Ava,” released September 25, currently sits at #1 on both AppleTV and Google Play at a standard new-release price of $6.99. It was a troubled production: Matthew Newton wrote the film (originally titled “Eve”) and developed it with Chastain, who stars as an assassin in a secret organization. However, he stepped down as its director about a month before production began in September 2018 after facing public backlash to his past charges of domestic violence and assault. (Newton pled guilty.)
Tate Taylor, who previously directed Chastain in “The Help” and “Ma,” replaced Newton; after the film wrapped, it was retitled “Ava.

Video Version of this Article Photo/Video: Jon Stewart/Comedy Central/Hollywood Insider YouTube Channel Jon Stewart is a late-night legend. He was the heart and soul of one of America’s favorite talk shows for almost two decades and though he retired from his position hosting The Daily Show, he still occasionally drops by other late-night shows, reportedly sleeping under the desk of Stephen Colbert. Of course, he’s allowed to miss his job, but taking up residence under the Late Show desk might be taking it a bit far. Just a little bit. Just because he’s retired doesn’t mean he’s inactive, as Stewart has taken up the cause of ensuring that heroes who risked their lives on 9/11 are properly taken care of and get the help they deserve. He also dabbles a bit in producing and though the Oscars seem to be allergic to comedy,...

Five months after its scuttled April theatrical date, “Antebellum” is showing strong initial response on multiple VOD platforms. The premium-priced horror/thriller (with similarities to Jordan Peele’s hit “Get Out”) scored as the first top studio PVOD release since “Bill & Ted Face the Music” three weeks ago. With about 75 percent of North American theaters now open, they would have benefited from this title.
As always, we don’t have actual revenue totals. For “Antebellum,” however, its opening-weekend status is clear: It found top ranking on charts that rate by total gross (it achieved this in three days on FandangoNow and Vudu) and high placement on two other charts that list by transaction volume. (It debuted too late to place at Spectrum).
Lionsgate retained 80 percent of the take on “Antebellum,” compared to perhaps 50-55 percent for a theatrical run. On that basis, it means that if 500,000 consumers rented it,...
