The hardest thing I've ever had to watch
ejarvis-6575711 April 2021
As far as acting and continuous gripping storytelling goes this episode is a solid 10 but... I'll never be watching this again. This one scene was the hardest thing to watch and I felt like I needed to turn it off but then I'd feel guilty for not sticking with it knowing that this is part of the despicable American history. These are fictionalise versions of real people who had to go through this and to some extent continue to do so. I'll never be able to forget this.

Cat In A Bag!
wandernn1-81-68327416 August 2021
Seeing the reviews ahead of viewing this ep. All I can say is I cant wait to watch it!! Oh please impress me!!!

GO WEST YOUNG MAN! THE FUTURE OF AMERICA IS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA!!!!

+1 Star for the opening scene about the real estate..

+1 Star for various directing tricks and edits

+1 Star for Cat in a Bag scene.

This was a very good ep. Disturbing. It did seem to ignore the paranormal element entirely however. 8/10.

Almost unbearable to watch...
Xamalion9 April 2021
...but too important to not show. I'm binging the series and I'm constantly out of words. I am almost 40 years old, white and from Germany and thanks to my parents, racism was never an issue or part of my childhood. But as I grow older and learn more about it, I realize how privileged I am for simply being born that way. This series makes me mad and aggressive, to see what happened to people, and this is only one family, the tip of the iceberg. I also learn how deeply routed the casualness of racism is in American culture up to this day. Of course there is improvement, but we as a society have still miles (or better lightyears) to go. This show has taught me a lot so far and I'm excited to see where it is going. The bad rating (only 4.8 at the time I write this) of the whole show can only be evidence, that there is still not enough awareness that it's not only about today, but how many lives were destroyed on the way.

Be Prepared - Not An Easy Watch
Critic_For_Life11 April 2021
Watched this episode last night and it was very difficult to sit through it. Just amazed how our fellow Americans were treated this way - black families and women - this would never be tolerated today. I wanted to throw something at those suits.

Sick, twisted and raw.
tomasle199521 April 2021
This series just gets more intriguing and intriguing. The character development is so harrowing and strong that it makes it near impossible not to watch. I've seen reviewers reviewing this episode negatively because of what happens in the episode being so stomach churning and disturbing that they can't bare. I mean, it is rated for mature audiences only and this pushes that to the limits but the message remains the same. This is an everyday lived fear and unfortunately reality that African Americans and many other deemed minority peoples go through. I watched it on Amazon and it gave me a clear warning as what was about to happen so I don't know what you're complaining about. You're the one who kept watching.

Warning: Spoilers
This basically starts with a group of bankers casually redlining neighborhoods and talking about flipping them over to black people to make a profit, drive whites out, and charge black folks five times as much interest than whites.

No, I got that wrong. It starts off with the GI Bill and lending opportunities for whites to become first time homebuyers. Opportunities, whichwere not offered to black veterans at the time. Average working class whites were able to buy homes and start building wealth to pass down.

Then we move on to redlining. And then we move on to the family and the horrific thing that happened to them that drove them up north. This is not an easy watch for anyone. I'm not going to lie, I have to drink wine every time I watch this.

My husband (white) and I are watching this only one episode at a time on Saturday or Sunday - way too much, too deep, to bingewatch, because each episode takes you to a place that you don't want to be, whether you're black or white. And it takes time to absorb and get it out of your system before you can handle it as best you can.

One Of The Hardest Things I've Sat Through
flowerstardust19797 May 2021
I didn't even know how to rate this given the subject and what I felt watching this. It wasn't pleasant in any way. It does deserve a high score purely to cause me to react the way I did and feel the way I did. I would certainly advise caution and a possible trigger warning for many people. I can say without spoilers that the episode is showing you how their baby boy died, which you already know happened from watching the 1st episode. However it was an important part of the story and it highlights the horrific racism that very much occurred before and during migration and still relevant in 2021. I watched this before going to bed and I went to bed rather distressed. As awful as this was to watch, kudos to the writers and actors for making me feel so many negative emotions and complete disbelief.

So that happened

Warning: Spoilers
I admit that I am not a huge fan of horror and this being more of a reality based horror story makes even it even more difficult to watch.

I did start to question if the violence and horror may be leaning gratuitous but it's a horror series, it adds to the story and takes nothing away. Also because this is based on historical atrocities it makes little sense to say its over the top.

Here we have an entire episode of enraging and devastating scenes all plucked from out nations past , if anything they are overshadowed by one of the most visceral 5 minutes most of us can bare.

Reviewers that are upset by what happened here should be ; yet they should also be aware that this type of violence isn't made up. Becoming indignant about people of all ages being killed, assaulted, starved or gassed by the thousands in general is a departure from reality and they should probably stay away from world history and current events for that matter.

The ratings here strengthened my theory about IMDb ratings in general. I noticed many reviewers base reviews on their personal taste and while our taste can change with our mood, it does account for something but not everything- just seems like is an unjust way to review. Next because we can have the greatest story shot on an iPhone or sprawling epic that spans continents with a poor story line It can be hard it really know what to make of ratings overall yet there is a pattern. In the end there is clearly an ebb and flow of ratings based on things like expectations, preference, new releases vs classics and older entertainment that it seem to all come out in the wash so to speak .

Based on this a 7 for a horror film or series a seems to be about as good as it gets.

You will (bleep) your pants!

Look...I know what you are thinking. There isn't anything that can freak me out. You've probably seen Human Centipede and The Green Inferno (shout out to Eli Roth!) and thought...you can stomach anything. Think again! As this Episode starts, a warning flashes the screen. I didn't pay it much mind...ahem...like you will likely do. What. A. Mistake. I mean, the actors were incredible. The directing, cinematography, sound...everything is killer. But PHEW. This is going to be contra-effing-versial. Gave it 5 stars because I want to give it a 1 and I want to give it a 10.

Do not say you were not warned! I was not prepared. #Catinabag.

Warning: Spoilers
I'm not even sure where this show is going and I actually love that. Predictable stuff is what I'm used to. Really cool episode and so far I have never seen a show where they killed a baby by spinning it in a pillow case. Pretty cool stuff. Original and bares no sacrifice to the story. The world is dark and I hate when shows try and hide that.

i hope it all makes sense and this experience isnt all for nothing
sena18319 April 2021
Really confused on what to think, i havent finished it yet and just watched this episode and im gonna finish it just to see if this graphic, disgusting episode was worth for me to see. This really shouldt be okay. It is also surprising that this was the episode that was directed by a black women- the only episode directed by either a women or a black person-. Cause honestly during that scene all i thought was tarantino could make something and it would be more humane, and coming from me, right now, when im kinda traumatized, is not a compliment.

My current thought at ep5: i WISH the whole direction of the show included much less of the racial drama and abuse and more horror. Cause i enjoy those storylines very much.
