The scene in which Maddie (Madison Lintz) confronts Bosch (Titus Welliver) about going undercover and staying out of contact was written to be simple on the surface but emotionally deep. Titus considers it one of the best scenes he's gotten to do in all five seasons.
For the action centerpiece for both the episode and the season, the crew mounted a plane fuselage on a gimbal surrounded by green screen. Director Ernest Dickerson shot video of a fight scene that action coordinator Alex Daniel worked out with stuntmen, then used the video to help storyboard a sequence of hand-to-hand combat in a space smaller than a walk-in closet and too low to stand up in.
Maddie's question to Bosch, "How many people have you killed?", is a callback to season 1 when Honey Chandler asked him the same question on the stand.
Director Ernest Dickerson has experience with skydiving, which informed the way he shot the scene of the guy being pushed out of the plane.
In pre-production for the episode, producer Pieter Jan Brugge and Director of Photography Michael McDonough went to the Salton Sea to do a test flight to get a sense of how best to light the plane sequence.
