Paul Mescal continues to emerge as one of the finest young actors working today. The Irish actor rose to fame for his lead role in the BBC/Hulu miniseries Normal People, for which he earned an Emmy nomination. From there, Mescal transitioned to film with his feature debut in The Lost Daughter and quickly earned his first Academy Award nomination for his quietly devastating performance as a troubled father in A24's Aftersun. He also starred in the LGBTQ+ romance All of Us Strangers, earning a BAFTA nomination for his performance.
However, for his first major action blockbuster, Mescal carefully chose Ridley Scott's Gladiator II, playing the lead role of Lucius, the son of Russell Crowe's Maximus. Despite expanding to big-budget filmmaking, Mescal hasn't lost his identity as an actor and continues to opt mostly for smaller, independent projects that showcase his subtle sensibilities as an actor. Paul Mescal says comparisons between Oliver Hermanus’ The History Of Sound and Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain are “lazy and frustrating”, following the world premiere of the film in Cannes Competition last night (May 21).
Mescal stars with Josh O’Connor in the film about the romance between two men during the First World War.
“I personally don’t see the parallels at all, other than the fact that we spent a bit of time in a tent,” said Mescal with a smile, at the Cannes press conference for the film. “But each to their own. There’s a bigger question there...

Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor build a budding wartime romance in the 2025 Cannes Film Festival premiere “The History of Sound.” What you won’t see onscreen are either a tale directly about queer repression circa World War I or any explicit sex scenes, as much as the internet might be hurting for them. Mescal and O’Connor play music students in love and on the road, recording songs from everyday American people, with circumstances and years that force them apart and together yet again.
South African director Hermanus brings a film to the Cannes Competition for the first time, as does Mescal, the Oscar-nominated actor whose iconic “Aftersun” broke out of the Critics’ Week section in 2022. The filmmaker, adapting a short story from Ben Shattuck who also writes the script, doesn’t make a big gay fuss about the love forming between Lionel (Mescal) and David (O’Connor), demuring in...

Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor made Cannes Film Festival sob on Wednesday night with Oliver Hermanus’ “The History of Sound,” which earned a six-minute standing ovation.
While Mescal received a standing ovation when walking in, O’Connor had to miss the premiere because he was finishing filming his part in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film and couldn’t make it.
Though O’Connor wasn’t present, Mescal carried the weight. One rowdy fan screamed, “We love you, Paul!” seconds before the film started, when the audience usually sits in reverent silence. By the end, moviegoers were weeping and swatting at each other trying to get video of Mescal, who was also tearing up.
“This has been one of the most wonderful creative collaborations of my very, very short career, but this has been a testament to the genius of Paul Mescal,” said director Hermanus.

The false notes are rare in director Oliver Hermanus’ affecting and dustily textured romance “The History of Sound,” written by Ben Shattuck from his own short story about men in love, together and apart, circa World War I and its aftermath. But for a queer love story starring two of the hottest, of-this-moment leading actors around — Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor — “The History of Sound” almost perversely denies your expectations of what a gay romance could be.
The grandiose, sweeping emotional gestures toward repression and latent desire out of something like “Brokeback Mountain” are nowhere here, Hermanus instead following the lonesome Lionel (Mescal) around America’s hidden corners and eventually into Europe for much of this melancholy mood movie.
Mescal and O’Connor play Boston Conservatory music students who meet in 1917, spend winding but limited bouts of time with one another over the years, and on the way to the film’s rueful conclusion.

Acclaimed director Oliver Hermanus is back at the Cannes Film Festival after almost two decades, ready to bring some movie star heat and stir emotions with a lush romantic drama starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor.
“The History of Sound,” first conceived in early 2020 before the onset of coronavirus, instantly generated social media buzz on announcement. At the time, Mescal and O’Connor were fledgling internet boyfriends starring on prestige shows “Normal People” and “The Crown,” respectively. Five years later, and they’re two of the most in-demand actors in show business.
Adapted from a collection of short stories by author Ben Shattuck, the film follows Lionel (Mescal), a talent singer from rural Kentucky with big dreams. Attending the Boston Music Conservatory in 1920, he meets David (O’Connor), who is eventually drafted to war. Unlike its real-life subjects in the news, Good American Family has not exactly made a big splash in Gold Derby's Emmy charts. Following a mixed-to-negative critical and audience reception and muted online buzz throughout its eight-episode run, the Hulu limited series isn't expected to land any major nominations, according to the odds, which currently account for the series and top acting races. But people may be writing off the show too quickly. It's a top priority for Hulu in limited this year, and if the past few years have taught us anything, it's never to underestimate the streamer in this field.
Since becoming the first streaming service to win a series prize, with its flagship drama The Handmaid's Tale in 2017, Hulu has only been growing stronger at the Emmys, particularly in the limited series categories. It finally broke into the Best Limited Series race with Little Fires Everywhere in 2020, and...

Back in 2020, it was big news in film circles when Netflix picked up the original script by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Simon Kinberg for Here Comes The Flood in an undisclosed seven-figure deal. Then, the agreement for this not-so-conventional heist movie seems to have fallen into the shadows, with the early possibility that Jason Bateman will direct an iteration that will never occur.
Five years on, and the whole project is back on track, with the directing duties, production team, and principal cast officially announced. Here Comes The Flood, based on Kingberg’s screenplay, will have a strong cast featuring Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Daisy Edgar-Jones in key roles.
Oscar-nominated Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles takes on directing duties, and Samson Mucke is executive producer. The production is yet to start, so no trailers or release date are available.

Netflix is preparing to develop a new heist film, and it's one that has three major Hollywood stars attached. The studio has announced that Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Daisy Edgar-Jonesare set to star in the upcoming film Here Comes the Flood, a crime thriller that will be directed by Fernando Meirelles. Details of the plot are largely unknown, but the film sounds like it's shaping up to be a large venture.
Specifics remain in the dark on where exactly this project will take us. However, the film will be an "unconventional heist movie about a bank guard, a teller and a master thief in a deadly game of cons and double crosses," according to a logline from Netflix. It is unclear who of the trio will be playing which role. However, it sounds like this is the type of Ocean's-brand heist film that has seen a resurgence in recent years.

Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones are set to lead heist film “Here Comes the Flood” at Netflix. The project was announced during Netflix’s Upfront presentation on Wednesday. Simon Kinberg (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) penned the script for “Here Comes the Flood.” Producers include Kinberg and Audrey Chon for Genre Films and Meirelles. Samson Mucke serves as executive producer. Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones will star in Here Comes the Flood, a Simon Kinberg-penned crime thriller that Fernando Meirelles will direct for Netflix.
Meirelles is also producing the feature with Oscar nominee Kinberg and Audrey Chon, the latter two via their Genre Films banner.
Netflix picked up the original screenplay in 2020, making a splashy seven-figure deal to win a heated spec script auction. It was a markedly different era, with the streaming wars in full swing and the streamer’s film unit being run by Scott Stuber, who always had Netflix’s wallet open. Still, the project survived (at one point Jason Bateman was in talks to direct an iteration but a deal never took), and now five years later has attracted top-shelf talent.

[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in September 2024. It has since been updated with new entries.]
If there’s anything TV is built for, it’s creating a satisfying romance. The prospect of watching the same characters for several episodes, several years potentially, and see them evolve means that fans can watch as a pairing meet, bicker, fall in love, get together (and maybe do those last two steps over and over again for some on-and-off-again tension), and reach relationship milestones that film can’t really cover with the same breadth. One of TV’s very first hits, “I Love Lucy,” didn’t have the word “love” in it for nothing — at its core, it was a story of a loving (if hectic) marriage.
As the medium has evolved, TV has been littered with absolutely iconic couples. Sitcoms like “Cheers,” “The Office,” or “New Girl” mined gold from the will-they-won’t-they between pairings like Sam and Diane, Pam and Jim, Jess and Nick. Soap operas such...

Imagine two actors miles apart during a global pandemic connecting over a Zoom call that sparks a creative fire. That is exactly how Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor’s journey began, leading to The History of Sound, a sweeping historical drama already tugging at heartstrings. Fresh off the emotional whirlwind of Normal People, Mescal was “starstruck” when O’Connor reached out as a fan in 2020.
Now, their on-screen chemistry as Lionel and David, two young men falling in love while recording American stories during WWI, promises to be a tender, decades-spanning tale of connection. Directed by Oliver Hermanus, this film feels like a passion project that’s been years in the making.

Paul Mescal has worked with auteurs and iconic actors alike, but the star is now revealing one of the first future co-stars he was truly starstruck by: Josh O’Connor.
The duo lead “The History of Sound,” which will debut at Cannes after being in the works for four years. The project was first announced in 2021, with a press statement from director Oliver Hermanus (accurately) citing how O’Connor and Mescal were “two of the most promising actors of their generation.”
The shoot was planned for 2022; however, the production was delayed due to financing amid the pandemic and later, guild strikes. The film was instead shot in 2024, after O’Connor and Mescal had already respectively become big stars. Yet Mescal still remembers just how in awe he was of O’Connor at the start of his own career post-“Normal People” success back in 2020.

The Beatles, one of the most iconic bands of all time, is set to receive a cinematic tribute. Director Sam Mendes has announced that this groundbreaking project will be quite different from a conventional biopic.
Instead of a single film, four separate biopics—each focusing on a different member of the Fab Four—will come together as a four-film cinematic event. Mendes believes this will be the “first bingeable theatrical experience.”

Daisy Edgar-Jones is singing Paul Mescal’s praises once more.
The “Where the Crawdads Sing” and “On Swift Horses” actress told Elle that working with Mescal is “like playing tennis with your best friend.” The duo co-starred in “Normal People” together, which now marks its five-year anniversary.
“I have worked with basically all of the internet’s boyfriends,” Edgar-Jones said, citing Mescal, her “Twisters” co-star Glen Powell, and “Fresh” actor Sebastian Stan. “And I’m lucky that every actor I’ve worked with has been incredibly supportive of me being the lead. Glen, Sebastian, Paul, all of them. I think that’s why they’re so successful and so loved and so good: That they are so generous, and they really serve the story and are not serving themselves.”

Daisy Edgar-Jones said in an interview with Elle Magazine that she is quite fortunate her A-list male co-stars have never taken issue with her being the lead star over them. Some casting decisions are so challenging they make you wonder if Hollywood secretly enjoys stress. Trying to find a young Haymitch Abernathy? That’s like trying to find a unicorn that also happens to be a method actor.
We all know Woody Harrelson didn’t just play Haymitch, he became him. The man exuded charm, sarcasm, and just the right amount of “I’ve seen things” energy that made his portrayal unforgettable. Now, with Sunrise on the Reaping, The Hunger Games prequel in the works, the casting gods have their work cut out for them.

But hey, it’s not like this is the first time Hollywood has faced a character recast dilemma. Young Han Solo? That went… let’s just say Alden Ehrenreich tried his best. A new Wolverine post-Hugh Jackman? That debate alone could start a world war.

It's been a strong year for Hulu, between their continued success with shows like "Only Murders in the Building" and "The Bear," as well as new hits like "Shōgun" and "Paradise." However, one original Hulu series that may have flown under the radar of most viewers is "Tell Me Lies," a drama series that premiered back in 2022 and returned for its second season in 2024. It might be the perfect new series to binge-watch if you can't find a movie to watch on Hulu right now, but its 18 episodes might be not enough for fans.
"Tell Me Lies" stars Grace Van Patten and Jackson White as two college students who fall in and out of love over the span of eight years. Based on a 2018 novel by Carola Lovering, the series has been lauded by critics for its performances, nuanced portrayal of toxic relationships, and its modern take on romantic drama.

Since its release, there has been clamor for a sequel to the hit TV drama Normal People, which made breakthrough stars of its two leads Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones when it was released during lockdown in April 2020.
But one of the cast, Irish actor Éanna Hardwicke, has shared he doesn’t like the idea of a sequel, as he’s “not a fan of rehashing things.”
BBC News reports that the actor was speaking at a pre-Oscars party in Los Angeles Thursday evening.
The BBC drama was adapted by writer Sally Rooney from her own bestselling novel and followed the on-off relationship of Irish teenagers Marianne and Connell.
Hardwicke played Rob, a schoolfriend of Connell’s, in the series. He told BBC News: “It’s nicer to leave it in people’s imagination, and leave it as it was.”

Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù has landed a leading film role.
The fast-rising British actor — best-known for “Gangs of London” but recently seen in the third season of “Slow Horses” — will appear in “My Father’s Shadow,” the feature directorial debut of British-Nigerian filmmaker Akinola Davies, whose Sundance-winning short film “Lizard” was BAFTA nominated.
The film, co-written by Davies and his brother Wale Davies (who also co-wrote “Lizard”), is a co-production between “Normal People” and “Poor Things” banner Element Pictures, alongside BBC Film and the British Film Institute, and last year wrapped production in Nigeria, where it shot on location in Lagos. Rachel Dargavel, who produced “Lizard,” produces for Element. Mubi has already acquired the film for multiple territories, including North America, U.K., Ireland, and Turkey.
Variety understands that the film is semi-autobiographical and is about the relationship between a father and his two young boys over the course of a day in the Nigerian city.

The best Daisy Edgar-Jones movies and TV shows highlight just how quickly the star of Twisters, Fresh, and Where the Crawdads Sing has carved out a reputation for playing complex and nuanced characters. Born in London in 1998, Daisy Edgar-Jones found her footing appearing in comedies in dramas in the UK such as Cold Feet, Outnumbered, and Silent Witness. This began to change in 2018 when she led the cast of the indie coming-of-age movie Pond Life - her feature film debut.
From there, Daisy Edgar-Jones found herself taking up central roles in her TV show projects, such as the 2019-2022 adaptation of War of the Worlds, and the 2020 comedy-drama Normal People (for which she was nominated for multiple awards). Disney is working on a live-action version of the classic animated film Hercules, and casting ideas are already making waves. This remake is part of Disney’s ongoing trend of reimagining their animated hits with real actors, giving audiences a fresh take on beloved stories.
Now, a suggestion from a big-name celebrity is adding more excitement to the project. Variety shared that Ariana Grande has someone in mind for the lead role. She believes Paul Mescal, known for his role in Normal People and Gladiator II, should play Hercules.
It’s not hard to see why she’d think that. Paul Mescal has been gaining attention for his strong performances, and his rugged, yet charming look seems to match what we might picture for a live-action Hercules. Grande’s endorsement could add some buzz to his potential involvement.

Have Joe Alwyn and Paul Mescal formulated a tortured man club? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The revelation came during a December 15 interview for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, where the two stars, both of whom starred in TV adaptations of Sally Rooney’s emotionally charged novels, swapped thoughts on their introspective art. You know, Joe Alwyn and Paul Mescal were just a couple of sad boys trying to navigate life, love, and anxiety.
So how did these two get to the name “Tortured Man Club”? It started with a cheeky question from Mescal. “So what’s the name of the WhatsApp group that we’re in?” he asked Alwyn. To which Alwyn deadpanned, “It’s me, you—and Andrew Scott started the group.” Yeah, that Andrew Scott—the Fleabag Hot Priest himself. And according to Alwyn, Scott is practically the group’s unofficial leader, the most frequent texter, and often found messaging himself “good mornings.

Gladiator II star Paul Mescal admits he had to fake it to make it in the acting world, sort of. The acclaimed actor shares how a big lie he told led to him landing his breakout role in the romantic psychological drama, Normal People.
Speaking with W Magazine, Mescal revealed he fibbed when he tried out for and eventually landed his role in Normal People, claiming he could drive despite not owning a driver's license. Mescal recalled his white lie to producers before signing the paperwork to join the Irish series when asked if he had to exaggerate about specific skills to land a part. "I said I could drive for Normal People, and I could not drive. We'd signed the paperwork, I'd gotten the part, and then I'd forgotten about doing my driver's license. So I ended up doing Normal People on a provisional license. I could only drive...

Paul Mescal is opening up about why he enjoys watching The Traitors UK and when he told a little lie to land his role on Normal People.
In a new interview, Mescal revealed that his favorite reality show is the UK version of The Traitors, the BBC One competition series hosted by Claudia Winkleman, which just debuted its third season to a ratings record.
“The Traitors—the U.K. one,” Mescal told W magazine, distinguishing he liked the UK version over the other adaptations. “It’s highly stressful, highly entertaining. Great to see the kind of psychological warfare that goes on. And the manipulation is second to none.”
The Traitors format is an adaptation of the Dutch series De Verraders and features a group of contestants working together as “Faithful” trying to uncover the “Traitors” among them. Peacock adapted the format for U.S. audiences featuring celebrity contestants.

Paul Mescal is looking back on when he fibbed about himself in order to land his role on Normal People.
While appearing on one of W magazine‘s Best Performances covers, the Gladiator II star was asked if he ever lied about having a certain skill to land a part to which he pointed to his role as Connell on the hit Hulu-BBC show.
“I said I could drive for Normal People, and I could not drive. We’d signed the paperwork, I’d gotten the part, and then I’d forgotten about doing my driver’s license. So I ended up doing Normal People on a provisional license. I could only drive the car if there was a fully licensed driver beside me,” he shared.

Paul Mescal Gladiator 2 Insights (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Paul Mescal’s role in Gladiator 2 had everyone talking, and for good reason. The 27-year-old Normal People and Aftersun star stepped into the sandals of Lucius, the adult nephew of Emperor Commodus, a role originally played by Joaquin Phoenix. Naturally, all eyes were on his transformation for the part—because, let’s face it, when you’re in a Gladiator sequel, expectations are sky-high for the actor to look every bit the beast. But Mescal wasn’t interested in letting the spotlight on his physique overshadow the depth of his performance.
In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mescal clarified that while physicality was necessary for the role, he wasn’t focused on the transformation for transformation’s sake. “Of course, there’s a physical robustness required for the character, but past that, I’m not interested,” he said. It was a refreshing take.

Paul Mescal is one of the rising stars among the current generation of movie actors. However, his career trajectory differs from that of his same-age contemporaries like Asa Butterfield, Lucas Hedges, and Tom Holland. After gaining theatre experience in Dublin and London, Mescal got his big breakthrough in “Normal People,” a coming-of-age romance drama series based on Sally Rooney’s 2018 novel of the same name. It became a global sensation during the Covid pandemic. The Hulu series put both him and his co-star, Daisy Edgar-Jones, in the limelight, who has recently starred in “Twisters,” one of the year’s defining summer blockbusters. Like her, Mescal is also set to venture into big-budget projects like Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator 2,” where Mescal is expected to share screen space with Pedro Pascal & Denzel Washington.
