A good, offbeat take on horror convention

The first five minutes are so commonplace as to be blasé and all but boring. Thankfully, the twist that comes after that puts a delightfully different spin on a story familiar to horror fans. The great strength of 'Come be creepy with us' isn't fright, it's comedy.

More than the first few expository minutes, I think the chief flaw here is that the last couple minutes falter. In trying to visualize a still more fantastical, dreamlike sequence of images, the punch of the short is diminished. In this aspect especially and specifically, but also considered as a whole, I don't think this completely lands on its feet. It's certainly not perfect.

Yet the sudden turn from would-be visceral thrill to wonderfully incongruous, blossoming friendship is a zigzag I absolutely love. Stars Adelaide Lummis and Jasmine Kimiko are superb as scene partners, making the unlikely camaraderie feel believably real. The writing in this central portion is aces, with scenes and dialogue that are simply fun, and even endearing. For that matter, the plot would seem to tend in a particular direction, and though I'm unsure of the quality of the end result, I'm nonetheless pleased that expectations were bucked again.

The makeup and subtly shifting set design and decoration are excellent, paramount to realizing the vision. Visual effects, editing, and lighting are great, even when the short loses its step. Camerawork and overall direction is solid; I think from a technical standpoint this is very well made. I just wish the screenplay were a bit more tight.

Still - once again - I love the lead actresses, and the interplay between them. The amusing turn is marvelous, and I do like the very end, for that matter. The longest, middle aspect of the short, its weight-bearing pillar, is grand. Though it's uneven and imperfect, and its approach to renowned horror tropes may be off-putting to some, I love 'Come be creepy with us.' This is well worth watching!
