Rlje Films will release Slash/Back, Nyla Innuksuk's Indigenous Canadian sci-fi horror flick, on DVD and Blu-ray on December 13, 2022. We have three (3) copies of Slash/Back on Bluray to give away next week. Set in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, a sleepy hamlet nestled in the majestic mountains of Baffin Island in the Arctic Ocean, Slash/Back opens as the village wakes up to a typical summer day. No School, no cool boys (well... except one), and 24-hour sunlight. But for Maika and her ragtag friends, the usual summer is suddenly not in the cards when they discover an alien invasion threatening their hometown. These teenagers have been underestimated their whole lives but, using makeshift weapons and their horror movie knowledge, they show the aliens you don't...

(Welcome to Under the Radar, a column where we spotlight specific movies, shows, trends, performances, or scenes that caught our eye and deserved more attention ... but otherwise flew under the radar. In this edition: a road trip dramedy takes a turn for the supernatural in "Next Exit," "Slash/Back" puts an extraterrestrial twist on a cultural coming-of-age tale, and "Something in the Dirt" goes for broke.)
Halloween has come and gone, Thanksgiving is firmly in the rearview mirror, and holiday season stress is already in full swing ... with the end of the year looming right behind it. If you're anything like me, three major seasonal shifts coming right after the other in such short order — combined with the annual scourge of Daylight Saving Time here in the States, of course — is enough to induce a debilitating case of tonal whiplash. Alien invasion movies are often at their most exciting than when they happen in a world we can relate to, which feels like home. That sucks if one happens to be Inuit. Early on in Slash/Back we see its young heroines discussing John Carpenter’s The Thing in that exaggerated, not quite accurate way that sheltered teenagers do, but nothing exciting ever happens in Pangnirtung, in frozen Nunavut. Bored Maika (Tsiana Shirley) is just biding time until she can get out of there and head for the bright lights and glamour of Winnipeg.
Viewers may see the place a little differently, having been privy to a prologue in which a visiting American scientist daft enough to move towards a roaring sound is eaten face first – and not by a bear. There’s something sinister in the snow and before long the girls run straight into it. Inuit myths and science fiction.

The Toronto International Film Festival Primetime program is set to spotlight seven compelling and thought-provoking television series from around the world — including five world premieres. In addition to series premieres, TIFF will present season premieres of established and beloved shows.
Returning to the Glenn Gould Theatre, TIFF’s Industry Conference lineup also announced today will engage and inspire industry delegates from all over the world with a highly curated slate of sessions and inspiring speakers. This year’s festival runs September 8 through 16.
Heading up the series lineup is, among others, Lars von Trier with the return of his twisted dark comedy series “The Kingdom,” revolving around a supernatural hospital. Alexander Skarsgård joins the cast of the series this time.
“TIFF recognizes serialized storytelling as one of the most groundbreaking creative mediums today,” said Anita Lee, Chief Programming Officer, TIFF. “Growing increasingly risk-taking, it continues to attract top writers and directors globally.

Stuck in a town so small and remote that even Walmart won’t open a store there, the girls “borrow” a boat and cruise out to a remote cabin to hang out. Rlje Films have acquired Nyla Innuksuk’s Slash/Back, the indigenous Canadian alien invasion flick, and will release it in cinemas later this year. It will also be available on VOD/Digital and stream on Shudder at that time. Okay, this is weird, but also cool. Just this past weekend I found out that Slash/Back was playing at one of the local rep cinema's here in town. Lamenting the point that I had missed the screening but also pissed that we've heard fuck all about it from its distributor I did end up finding it unceremouniously dumped for rent on another major streamer. But now this news yesterday? The universe has an algorithm all its own. Our own Josh was able to catch its world...

Rlje Films and Shudder have acquired Nyla Innuksuk’s “Slash/Back,” an alien invasion thriller that premiered to raves at this year’s SXSW.
The two companies are business units of AMC Networks. The film is expected to be released in theaters and on VOD/Digital before streaming on Shudder later this year. Shudder is focused on horror, thriller and supernatural content, so the appeal is obvious.
“Slash/Back” is the feature directorial debut of Innuksuk, who also co-wrote the film with Ryan Cavan (“The Secret Goat”). It stars a young cast that includes Tasiana Shirley, Alexis Wolfe, Nalajoss Ellsworth and Chelsea Prusky.
“The brilliant effects, strong female leads and fun, adventurous story make this a film we know audiences are going to love,” said Mark Ward, chief acquisitions officer at Rlje Films.

Teenagers often experience the same emotions across different societies, even in isolated communities at the end of the world, from processing shame in their cultures to wanting to seek fun while pursuing their independence. The settlement of North America is intricately linked with the abuse, conquer, and genocide of the Indigenous people. Not only were these First Nations stripped of their lands, but their individual mythologies, cultures, and languages were eradicated via this settlement, stolen children, and abuses in the reservation and residential school systems. Of course, these myriad atrocities are impossible to list within a movie review, but one of the worst offenses of the North American frontier myth was to strip the North American Native people of their symbolic individuality — lumping hundreds and thousands of unique people and nations into one massive, enemy — the ultimate bad guy in the most popular U.S.

SXSW is still on-going with the music portion at the center of attention, but the films at this years festival were unforgettable. Because SXSW champions independent cinema, it gives move lovers like me the chance to discover movies I wouldn’t have heard of outside of traveling to Austin. Below I provide some quick cut capsule reviews for Aftershock, Woman on the Outside, Slash/Back, and Bitch Ass, which are a few of the films that made an impression on me. Be sure to put these on your radar!
Aftershock
Directors and producers Paula Eiselt and Tonya Lewis Lee’s documentary Aftershock chronicles life in the aftermath of the skyrocketing maternal deaths among Black women in the United States. Black maternal death includes numerous factors regarding race, sex, income, and preventable. Shamony Gibson and Amber Rose Issacs are two Black women with tragic backstories as both women died from medical negligence in hospitals.

Having started SXSW with a family-friendly horror film (of sorts) that didn’t quite hit the mark, it’s invigorating to end the Austin-based festival with another family-friendly effort that not only remembers to have fun, but also refrains from handholding its younger viewers through some serious subject matter. That’s what Nyla Innuksuk, in her feature directorial […]

In the simplest terms, Nyla Innuksuk's "Slash/Back" is "Attack the Block" meets "Reservation Dogs." Innuksuk honors Inuit roots by opting away from another "Stranger Things"-style coming-of-age horror hybrid that takes place on suburban streets. "Slash/Back" transports viewers to the Canadian territory of Nunavut, precisely the hamlet of Pang, highlighted by glacier-created fjords and Baffin Island mountains for incredible natural production values. Innuksuk and co-writer Ryan Cavan write about teenagers processing their Indigenous surroundings as much as global adolescent problems like curfews and crushes, for a uniquely Inuit creature feature that's got enough of what monster fans might crave.

In “Slash/Back,” something sinister from outer space lands a stone’s throw from the Arctic Circle, and humanity’s first line of defense proves to be a group of Inuit girls armed with nothing but their wits and a bunch of traditional hunting and fishing tools. In most low-budget alien-invasion movies, the heroes/victims are fairly generic, whereas the extra-terrestrial threat is what draws the crowd. But Native helmer Nyla Innuksuk (who co-wrote with Ryan Cavan) turns that equation inside-out, making this spunky band of save-the-world teens the main reason to see her movie — although the novel far-north location and reasonably fresh monster effects don’t hurt.
Innuksuk shot her debut in and around Pangnirtung, a tiny fishing community in the Canadian territory of Nunavut, where the sun never sets. Surrounded by snowy tundra, this gorgeous, remote location looks out on distant mountains, suggesting a less-intense version of John Carpenter...

Cinema is a window, not a mirror. I find myself repeating this mantra a lot lately, as some aging corners of cinema culture become more and more myopic, complaining about lack of representation for over represented groups or so-called force diversity. One of the things that has always drawn me to the movies is the idea that I can step into an unfamiliar world and experience it through the eyes of those who live there. Thousands of movies later, one can definitely get jaded and start to feel like they’ve seen everything, which is why it’s so exciting when a project like Nyla Innuksuk’s debut feature Slash/Back comes along. Set in the far northern Canadian territory of Nunavut, a vast and beautiful region that drapes...

Really super jealous of our Josh right now as he heads into the world premiere of Nyla Innuksuk's sci-fi horror Slash/Back at SXSW today. But to be fair, this is coming full circle for him as he chose Slash/Back as one of his top projects that was presented at Frontieres back in 2018. Go ahead, Josh, you deserve this. He's purposely avoided the first footage from Slash/Back that bowed on Deadline yesterday. If you don't feel as adamant about possible spoilers you can have a look for yourself down below. It's a simple clip. In it three of our young heroines come bursting into one of their homes and start stocking up on weapons. It's a wonderful, quick montage of zoom cuts, a familiar...

Ahead of the SXSW debut of their latest film, “Slash/Back,” three of the thriller’s producers —- Scythia Films’ Dan Bekerman and Stellar Citizens’ Chris Yurkovich and Alex Ordanis —- announced the launch of the new full-service production company, Good Question Media.
Bekerman, Yurkovich and Ordanis will serve as partners and producers in the new venture, which will oversee film and television projects, supporting them from inception through distribution and packaging with the Good Question Media development fund.
As one of the very few Canada-based private equity funds, the company is uniquely positioned to access the international treaty funding systems. But that’s just one way the veteran producers aim to use their combined expertise.
“We’ve always been united in the belief that a fundamental strength of storytelling is its ability to challenge how an audience thinks or sees the world,” Bekerman, Yurkovich and Ordanis told Variety in a joint statement.
