Dan Bell films a middle of the night exploration of the long closed and abandoned Frederick Towne Mall in Frederick, MD. In the darkness and desolation of this once thriving mall, the neon signs that remain glowing sharply counterpoint the dead trees, falling apart store décor and general decay. This short documents the decline of a fast fading era and lives up to the surreal mentioned in the title.

Dan Bell visits two dead malls for this latest entry in his ongoing Dead Mall Series. A tour of Crystal River Mall located in Crystal River, FL starts the video. Built in 1990, a large, airy food court is covered by several tents, giving it an unusual appearance with the surrounding mall containing many unique copper sculptures and plenty of colourful late 1980's, early 1990's tilework. The second half of the short features the Warren Mall located in Warren, PA. Opened in 1979, this mall continues to have the rich wood fixtures, large skylights, planters, benches and tilework and lighting of the era. Left without two of its anchors, K-Mart and J.C. Penney, viewers are able to get a very thorough tour as Dan explores the mall and its empty storefronts along with the unattended mall office.

Dan Bell once again invites viewers on a tour of some former retail giants that used to play a large part on our landscapes and our lives. Filmed with an authentic VHS camcorder, this short film documents the slow evolving change of the consumer driven mall era into professional office settings then jolts us into the sadness of the final chapter of the once behemoth children's store as it takes it's final bow and shutters for good due to bankruptcy. Dan does end this journey on a upbeat note though, as he and Rick Serra revisit Glen Burnie's Marley Station Mall. Marley Station opened in the mid 80s and retains the neon aesthetic as well as continuing to bring in business. Viewing the mall today through the VHS camcorder of yesteryear is poignant and perfect, an additional layer of art and depth of feeling.

Dan Bell heads to Florida to film two locations for his latest Dead Mall Series video. The first stop is Regency Square Mall in Jacksonville, FL. This large, colourful and modern mall was the most successful mall in the United States in 1979. Regency Square's now deteriorating interior and mostly closed storefronts reflect this modern retail era's sad decline. Next is a visit to Palatka Mall in Palatka, FL. Though this once busy mid size regional mall is essentially retail dead, the building itself has been mostly converted to medical and government offices, providing a look at an example of a successful mall repurposing.

Built in 1968, this small, single floor regional shopping center remains mostly unchanged and now, sadly mostly unrepaired. Both malls are presented with the humor and unique visual touches that continue to make Dan's Dead Mall series a standout success.
