It’s no surprise that filmmaker David Lynch’s fanbase has, for four decades, continually renewed itself among each new generation of cineastes. Something about the strange alchemy of the multidisciplinary Eagle Scout’s sensuous images, earnest perspective and intuitive storytelling perspective is intoxicating, buoyed onscreen by the talents of great creative collaborators like Mary Sweeney, Alan Splet and Angelo Badalamenti.
The films themselves are often dark but always honest, their perversions expressive and earned rather than bluntly hammered. As we follow the cosmic tendrils of Lynch’s brain backwards toward their origin, it’s only natural to ask: why does this guy see the world the way he sees it?
One answer may lay in Victor Fleming 1939 MGM classic, whose enchantments reach even further back, to its position as an early television staple for impressional baby boomers developing their imaginations and material predilections in the glow of the family’s suburban RCA console.

The documentarian Alexandre O. Philippe, who was born in Switzerland and is based in Denver, has carved out a neat niche for himself. He makes movies about movies — that is, movies about our obsession with movies. He shares the obsession, and as a filmmaker that allows him to overlap the role of superfan, critic, and historian in a way that’s candy for a certain breed of film freak. In “Document of the Dead,” Philippe made a grounded but heady exploration of “Night of the Living Dead” and what the rise of the zombie movie in the late ’60s was all about. In “78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene” (his best film), he penetrated the metaphysics of “Psycho,” starting with the shower scene but extending to the entire film, taking a movie that’s famous for its fear and showing you how its true pleasure and mystique lies in the intricacy with which we watch it.

The backstory of Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi film "Alien" is well-known to its fans, and many details are in the 2019 documentary "Memory: The Origins of Alien." Screenwriters Dan O'Bannon and Ron Shusett intended "Alien" to be a low-budget B-picture, thrown off in a few weeks with fingers crossed that it make its modest budget back. The original title was "Star Beast" (changed to "Alien" because they liked its double-duty as a noun and adjective), inspired by the legend of gremlins that would foul up the mechanical elements of World War II bombers.

The machinery upon the red carpet recalls Bacon's triptych, Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion. I was minded of them having seen Second Version of Triptych 1944 (1988) at the Royal Academy earlier this year. I was minded of them because those paintings appear in Memory: The Origins Of Alien, and Never Look Away also known as Work Without Author. I was minded of them because recursion, religion, repetition are embedded in Karmalink.
Described in some places as Cambodia's first science fiction film, Karmalink is an astonishing piece of work that perfectly captures a set of ideas and presents them to powerful effect. I adored it, from that first stark set piece of equipment on a carpeted auditorium incarnadine. The glow of wires like the spark of lightsabres painted on film directly, lost like tears in the rain falling on Citizen Kane.

After examining the iconic shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho in 78/52 and looking back on the birth of a sci-fi horror classic in Memory: The Origins of Alien, documentary filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe has now turned his attention to one of the most beloved (and notorious) horror films of all time: William Friedkin's The Exorcist (based on William Peter Blatty's novel of the same name).
In his new documentary Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist, Philippe sits down with Friedkin in a one-on-one style reminiscent of the Hitchcock/Truffaut conversations, taking us inside the mind of the brilliant filmmaker as he reflects on the fascinating, multifaceted making of his legendary movie that still sets the standard for bone-chilling cinematic horror nearly 50 years after its initial release.

Amazon Studios is set to turn the 1994 novel “The Memory Police” by Yoko Ogawa into a narrative feature, with Reed Morano directing the project and Charlie Kaufman serving as screenwriter. The news was first reported by Deadline. The National Book Award-nominated novel, an Orwellian tale of the dangers of surveillance, was recently translated and released by Pantheon Books in the English language, more than a quarter of a century after its debut in Japan.
Here’s the book’s synopsis, according to Penguin Random House: “On an unnamed island, objects are disappearing: first hats, then ribbons, birds, roses. . . . Most of the inhabitants are oblivious to these changes, while those few able to recall the lost objects live in fear of the draconian Memory Police, who are committed to ensuring that what has disappeared remains forgotten. Andrew Lloyd Webber has told the Donald Trump campaign to scrub his “Memory,” joining a growing list of musical artists — from Neil Young to the Rolling Stones — who object to the playing of their songs at Trump rallies.
“Excellent news!!,” tweeted actress Betty Buckley, who played the “Memory”-singing role of Grizabella in the original 1982 Broadway production of Cats. Addressing her Twitter followers, she continued, “Thanks to you guys!! Hippetyhaw!!”

Brendon Urie of Panic! At the Disco objected to the Donald Trump campaign’s use of “High Hopes” at a Phoenix event on Tuesday, even using an expletive to make his point.
“Dear Trump campaign,” Urie wrote on Twitter. “F*ck you. You’re not invited. Stop playing my song. No thanks, Brendon Urie, Panic! At The Disco & company.” He then tweeted a link to a voter registration site.

Some have called it the 'gayest horror movie ever made!' But for Mark Patton, the star of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, it was anything but a dream come true.

Always bold to some degree, seldom less than ambitious, William Friedkin’s career as a filmmaker has seen countless awards won; box offices records broken; and left us with more than a few classics. While the director can tell a story behind the camera, he’s also a knowledgeable, entertaining personality in front of one. Gifted with a voice worthy of sports broadcasting, he manages to appear even larger than his resume–in the same way his contemporary Peter Bogdanovich often does, another director who kept a foot in both “New Hollywood” and the gilded past of cinema history. Yet Friedkin is perhaps the only filmmaker so intrinsically linked with both the birth of New Hollywood and, unwittingly, with its ideological demise.
This irresistible combo of charisma, auteurism, and historical clout has inspired a number of documentary filmmakers in recent years. Francesco Zippel’s 2018 movie Friedkin Uncut provided a rollicking career overview,...

The show is going on for the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, even though by now in a normal year we would have known which film would succeed Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” as the new Palme d’Or winner. The original 2020 festival was scheduled to run May 12-23 but was canceled in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Cannes is living on this year as festival president Pierre Lescure and general delegate Thierry Frémaux are announcing the 56 films that made the cut for the 2020 Official Selection. Selected films will be branded with an official Cannes 2020 label that they can take to additional festivals later this year and use when they open in theaters.

Now, in its digitally re-mastered 4K version on the occasion of the film’s 40th anniversary, it still feels contemporary, serious and deadly. 46 years on from its release, “The Exorcist” is not exactly a film that wants for analysis; it’s also not a film people are likely to stop analyzing any time soon. William Friedkin’s horror masterclass is, well, just that: one of its genre’s most irresistibly teachable works, with a clear, clean command of form and theme that lends itself to limitless scholarly scrutiny and interpretation. Alexandre O. Philippe’s simply styled documentary “Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on ‘The Exorcist'” has a lot more of that to offer;Essentially a single interview with Friedkin interspersed with repeatedly revisited clips, “Leap of Faith” chiefly examines — per its title — the film’s spiritual allusions and illusions, distinguishing it from just any old making-of doc.

Alexandre O. Phillippe’s “Memory: The Origins of Alien” isn’t just a documentary about the making of “Alien”; it’s also an act of film criticism. The new film explores the artistic and cultural traditions that led to the sci-fi-horror masterpiece, characterizing the Ridley Scott film as the ultimate culmination of every nightmare that came before it.
And although Phillippe’s documentary oversells its thesis — and suffers from glaring omissions — it’s a thoughtful love letter to a fascinating classic.
Ridley Scott’s “Alien,” written by Dan O’Bannon with a co-story credit by Ronald Shusett, is one of the most celebrated films of its kind. Four decades after its release, it’s become etched in cinema history that Ridley Scott’s Alien was a landmark achievement in not only the science-fiction genre, but horror as well, and specifically the feat of nightmarish imagery that now exists in the deepest corridors of our collective conscious. As the compelling new documentary Memory: The Origins of Alien explores, the space odyssey “didn’t come out a vacuum.” Rather, it was an immensely collaborative effort that drew on paintings, novels, films, mythology, current events, and centuries-old sociological and ideological issues to conjure such a masterpiece.
Coming from Alexandre O. Philippe (78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene), the new documentary features interviews with Veronica Cartwright, Roger Christian, Tom Skerritt, Ronald Shusett, Roger Corman, and more as the history of the making of the film is explored in fascinating ways. Ahead of an October release this October, the first trailer has now arrived.

We’ve got a great trailer to share with you today for an awesome must see documentary called Memory: The Origins of Alien. The doc tells the enthralling behind-the-scenes story of how Ridley Scott’s classic 1979 sci-fi horror film Alien came together and got made. This doc really dives into the development of the film, and it’s filled with so much interesting information.
Here’s the official description:
Memory was a script that Dan O’Bannon started in 1971, abruptly hitting a wall at page 29. But after the idea gestated for several years, it ultimately took the form of Ridley Scott’s masterpiece Alien.
Alexandre O. Philippe’s documentaries—most recently 78/52, about Hitchcock’s Psycho shower scene—have interrogated cinema’s cultural ripples. If Memory—The Origins of Alien were only a comprehensive account of Alien’s origins—ancient myths, comic books, H.P. Lovecraft, sci-fi movies, and parasitic wasps—it would still be fascinating.
