Ugh
anadessma27 August 2022
A self-satisfied screaming bore. The self-congratulatory tone is established practically during the credits and never lets up. Especially worthy of sincere mockery is the character of the "Death Doula"! The hackneyed triteness on display here is inspired. Carrozo's ability to communicate a blessed thing regarding his predicament is, let's be honest, emoji-esque in range and depth. I was particularly unmoved by his canned-spam "acting" in trying-and failing-to articulate the word "morbid" as illustrative of the horrors of Alzheimer's. I yawned so strenuously I nearly dislocated my jaw. Throughout the movie he is as garrulous as Chatty Cathy. One concludes: If THAT'S senility, what's all the damn fuss about? Really, my dog whining to go out has evoked more existential dread.

As Wilde said so aptly about the "Death of Little Nell" in Great Expectations, you'd need a heart of stone to watch "Moon Manor" and not burst out laughing.

A Wonderfully Funny-Sad Journey
fmelish9 March 2022
Moon Manor is a warm, touching look at a life well-lived and one man's choice to end it with a grin. The fact that it's based on the life of its lead actor gives it a special, haunting resonance that stayed with me long after the final credits. A must-see!

Unique and interesting movie
Red-12524 October 2021
Moon Manor (2021) was co-written and co-directed by Machete Bang Bang and Erin Granat.

James 'Jimmy' Carrozo plays himself. In the movie, Carrozo has decided to commit suicide because he's losing his memory. He wants to leave the world in his own way. H e invites his friends to a "fun"eral, and will take the medicines when he decides the time is right.

The plot of the movie is what happens on that evening. Many friends arrive, and there's also an uninvited guest. This as a non-human creature, but it's not Death.

This movie sounds strange, but I would prefer to call it unusual. It was interesting and well acted. I recommend it.

We saw Moon Manor virtually as part of ImageOut, the excellent Rochester LGBT film festival. It doesn't yet have enough ratings to be meaningful. I really liked it, and rated it 9.

Instant Cult Classic
nathancwalker12 March 2022
I'm overwhelmed by the gritty and witty beauty of this film. Moon Manor takes a hard and humorous look at dying and, in turn, shares universal lessons about living. The colorful cast of characters, and the brilliant portrayal of the death doula by Debra Milson, stayed with me long after the film ended. An instant cult classic.

Defying our society's fear of death, Moon Manor showcases how dying on one's terms can be empowering. This touching, quirky film is thought provoking, original and avoids a formulaic plot.

A timely film for the conversation about doing death your way!
kaufgirl12 March 2022
Moon Manor is an endearing look at end-of-life issues and care and contributes to a timely conversation around the death positive movement and doing death your way. The characters are fresh and endearing. The life review as offered through the journalist, and the family dynamics at play, give us depth to understanding Jimmy's life and how this impacts his personal choices around death and dying. The community support for Jimmy's FUN-eral and honoring him are truly heartwarming. This film leaves you never wanting to forget these characters and feeling that you too have been witness to Jimmy dying on his own terms.

Groundbreaking skillful filmaking
info-1039628 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
One of the most important films of our generation, Moon Manor tackles the incredibly sensitive subjects of assisted suicide, Alzheimer's and death with depth, insight and well-placed humor.

I was alternating between laughter, awe and tears for much of the film.

The scriptwriting hit the perfect tone, never preachy, breaking intense moments with irreverent humor and humanity.

Between the campy queens bringing the party vibe to the FUNeral, and the comedic yet tragic story of the estranged brother campaigning against his siblings choice to die outside in a Jesus Saves van, this film is littered with gems of heartfelt wisdom.

The cinematography was masterful, and the use of color, lighting and composition was delightfully creative.

I can't say enough good things about this project. It's ahead of it's time, and yet perfectly timed. The fact that it's based on the lead actors own life makes it even more relevant, as he faces his own mortality.

I can't wait to share this film with everyone I know.

a film that explores death + a gay love story with humor and grace
It's been so long since i've seen an indie film that felt like the way indie films used to be.. Moon Manor explores death, family dynamics, medical aid in dying, a gay love story (finally! More of this!) and does it all with grace and ease.

I was laughing out loud within the first 3 minutes, and by the end, I was weeping with catharsis. WOW. I will be recommending this film to everyone I know. Talking about death is so important, and I love how brave the filmmakers (Erin + Machete) were to tackle such a huge topic, especially in their first film. Bravo!

I happened to see this film by a bit of chance and walked out in awe. The cast, writing, directing, cinematography, the score... it really hits on all notes. Such a perfectly crafted movie that is obviously a labor of love. Reminds me why I love movies, I wish they made more like these.

How movies should make you feel
luxandstone23 April 2022
I felt so many things watching Moon Manor. I was laughing every few moments and then holding back tears. But the movie earned my emotion, Jimmy's journey is one that's brave and inspiring while always winking at the audience. I recommended it to my parents and they loved it too. Soul satisfying.

Great even magical but still real in so many ways
jrneptune6 September 2022
James 'Jimmy' Carrozo might have started his film career later than others, but he reminds me of Willem Dafoe but I am so glad he took on the role instead. I hope to see him in more soon too.

Info-10396 provided a great review as well, so take time to read it.

Produced by Machete Bang Bang and edited as well.

The Directors, Machete Bang Bang and Erin Granatwho also wrote the story did a great job and the cinematography, by Jacob Bojsza, music, special effects, Artwork and more are all first class.

I am tempted to list all of the cast but I don't want to play favorites there. Everyone brought something to the table to make it a better film.

Well worth seeing. Even if you are young now just to give you something to think about later.

A beautiful, must see film.
jmessphoto1 March 2022
We loved this movie. We heard from a friend that it's worth seeing, and we were not disappointed. Poignant, wise, and brave. It's both heartbreaking and hilarious. And the lead actor's performance is startlingly powerful.

Couldn't recommend more highly. Bravo to the humans who made this film.

Beautiful little Gem!!!
li090442620 March 2022
"Moon Mansion" like other gems of 2020/2021 such as Red Rocket, Nine Days, The Novice, Mass, Sand Storm, and The Hard They Fall show uniqueness, creativity, originality in their scripts. They made you think, question life, and reflect on your day-to-day actions.

"Moon Mansion" with direction of Machete Bang Bang & Erin Granata has a beautiful performance by James 'Jimmy' Carrozo as himself. Jimmy decides to gather a bunch of friends, especially the ones who gave him the best memories in life for his last day in this world, a "party" he calls "FUN-eral".

This movie is original, raw, sometimes funny and the ensemble cast enhances the plot.

A MUST SEE!!!

A celebration of community in a comedy about death
therahko4 March 2022
Moon Manor is a touching story about finding a family through being oneself. The diverse ensemble cast deliver memorable performances that immediately draw the viewer into the film's world, and shining brightly among them all is Jimmy Carrozo, telling a larger-than-life version of his own story. The film's bright colors, quirky charm, and homey atmosphere give a human touch to the controversial topics it addresses, such as mortality. The tight script, practical visual effects, and exceptional score heighten the impact of each actor's performance. With doses of comedy, surrealism, and tension, it's a film that will make you laugh and cry, but above all think about the impact you have on others, and how you measure a life well lived.

Brilliant storytelling/Multi-dimensional characters
amydgodwin13 March 2022
This is a beautiful film-from the colorful characters to the glitter and light coming from nature, the costumes and, my favorite, Jimmy's intuition.

My father is dying from dementia so the film was heart-wrenching for me in parts but lightened by the reporter, the doula and wonderful flashbacks. I love Urian Ross who plays a teen Slick-Jimmy's musical friend who is attends Jimmy's big day. A magical moment to see onscreen.

Moon Manor is a film about life in all its complex beauty. One that reminds us that we're all on a bittersweet journey.

Honest and brave storytelling
devingati3 March 2022
Comparable to 'Beginners' and 'Terms of Endearment', this film is brilliantly written, acted, and shot, capturing the unforgettable Jimmy Carrozo as he transitions from this life to the next.

A fearless, funny, and deeply rewarding story, with a great soundtrack and easter eggs throughout. Stream and see for yourself.

My mother & I had an inspired conversation after watching this film and its tender portrayal of one extraordinary day in Jimmy's life. You really feel like you're spending precious hours with him at this party and the guests who form a tapestry around him, highlighting different aspects of his personality. Lovingly made, this film is so expressive and thoughtful about the dignity of death. It's sure to linger with you long after it's over.

A true testament of life.
justin-schwan28 February 2022
While the majority of us have been on the ride of binge-streaming shows for the past two years. This film knocked me back into the reality and what film making is all about. This films origin story is based on the lead Actor of the film 'Jimmy'. A man that from the fist instance he is on screen is genuine and authentic. The writing, directing and film making of this is top tier excellence. To take a this topic of what life is and how it's lived and ended is a tightrope to do well. This film did it. You will be along for this ride; smiling, laughing and crying.
