- Vishnu Trivedi (Vinay Pathak), a failing politician in the small town of Mathura, campaigns to ban live-in relationships, seeing them as a disgrace to the Indian conservative culture. At the same time, his party begins to lead an all-out campaign against film star Nazeem Khan (Abhinav Shukla), who is allegedly in a live-in relationship with his girlfriend, exactly the cause behind his grudge against live-in relationships. Vishnu heads the Sankriti Raksha Mantra or SRM and is not very fond of Muslims. Vishnu leads a campaign to boycott Nazeem's movies as well. The workers of the party harass all couples found on the streets in the name of protecting Indian culture.
Vishnu's daughter Rashmi takes up an internship at a local news channel and starts working with the channel's star reporter Vinod "Guddu" Shukla and his best friend, cameraman Abbas Sheikh. Guddu has been tasked by his boss to interview common citizens and gather their opinions on live-in relationships. Rashmi is assigned to Guddu's team.
Vinod "Guddu" Shukla (Kartik Aaryan) falls in love with Rashmi Trivedi (Kriti Sanon), a headstrong woman. Guddu proposes marriage but Rashmi suggests a live-in relationship as she does want to sacrifice her career for a bit life in small time Mathura. Guddu's family includes father Badriprasad Shukla (Atul Srivastava), Mother Shakuntala (Alka Amin), brothers Vikas Shukla (Himanshu Kohli) & Varun (Vishwanath Chatterjee). The family runs a Saree shop in Mathura. Varun is married to Janki (Neha Saraf). Vikas is elder to Guddu and the family has the tradition that the elder brother gets married before the younger ones.
Abbas Sheikh (Aparshakti Khurana) is Guddu's cameraman and becomes his and Rashmi's friend. Babulal (Pankaj Tripathi) is Guddu's brother's brother-in-law. He is unemployed and ogles on nubile women who come to the Saree shop. Babulal is a real estate agent. Guddu keeps confronting Babulal about his juvenile habits.
Due to anticipated pressure from both families (Rashmi knows that Mathura is not the right place for a live-in as her father is very connected and Guddu is too well known in the city), Abbas suggests that the duo rent an apartment in Gwalior (since they have to travel there for 20 days to cover the municipal election) and use that duration as a live-in. The real estate broker in Gwalior suggests that they both declare that they are married since unmarried couples won't get apartment in city due to fear of SRM. They even have to pay the broker Rs 10,000 as fee, instead of his usual rate of Rs 6000 to keep his mouth shut.
The duo moves in and meet their nosy neighbor Mrs. Soni Srivastava (Sapna Sand). They have sex that night. Things go well as they also divide household chores between themselves, but soon Mrs. Srivastava gets suspicious with the inconsistencies in the duo's stories (as they can't agree on where they come from or when they got married) and gets the entire neighborhood to gather. Rashmi & Guddu handle the situation by preparing all fake evidence of their wedding to show the society.
20 days go by, and one day Babulal sees Guddu & Rashmi together in Gwalior when he brings a woman with him there. Soon he finds the fake evidence at their apartment and believes that Guddu has married Rashmi. He brings the entire family to their apartment. The family is distraught that Guddu has broken tradition by getting married before Vikas. Abbas suggests that the family should get the duo "remarried". The matter reaches Vishnu, who is shell-shocked. Shrikant Trivedi (Ajeet Singh) is Vishnu's right-hand man and is disgusted with Rashmi's behavior. The 2 families decide against another wedding (Vishnu says that in their community the couple only gets married once) and organize a quick "fake" wedding for them for the "Samaj" and soon Rashmi is living with Guddu at his house. From day 1, Rashmi feels stifled in the house as she sees the family's love and think that she is betraying them with her lie. Technically they are in a live-in relationship where the whole family lives with them.
They try to get married in a temple, but the priest sees Rashmi's Mangalsutra and Sindoor and thinks she is already married and calls the goons of SRM. Guddu is beaten up badly. Rashmi escapes without being identified and so Guddu's family thinks he was trying to marry another woman.
In desperation Guddu and Rashmi try to get married in their room, with mantras playing on Abbas's mobile. But then his data plan goes bust and this doesn't work as well. Next, they try to get married at a mass wedding. But unfortunately, Vishnu is the chief guest there and gets suspicious when he stands up to bless Guddu and Rashmi (in wedding attire with faces hidden). He calls Badriprasad and says that he suspects the groom to be Guddu. Badri, believing that Guddu wants to marry another woman rushes to the mass wedding function.
Both families confront Guddu and accuse him of infidelity. But Rashmi comes to his rescue and admits to her father that she wanted the live-in and not Guddu. She convinces Vishnu to give up his conservative plank and adopt liberal values to attract the youth vote. Vishnu agrees and turns into a liberal political endorsing all youth agendas, including live-ins. He wins the next election.
