Enough w the fake reviews already, its a 4 to a 5.
bobkuhl5 February 2020
Not a bad movie, but seriously folks, can't people involved w/ the production STOP giving 10's to their movies just to bump up the aggregate score? 1) you can just tell when someone's making up a review, you don't need ESP. And 2) even those admitting to involvement, a 10?, seriously? If you truly love great movies then stop insulting movies like Casablanca, Psycho, Gone w the Wind, even Night of the Living Dead, etc, by giving your movie better ratings than the classics, it's embarassing. Show a LITTLE objectivity and SOME restraint by giving it what it is, a 4 to a 6.

Aspirational thriller
troy-boulton8 February 2020
The lead antagonist is not the only one suffering from delusions in this film. Adonis, like its Imperfect Host, has a little bit of an identity crisis. The film is unsure if it is a black comedy, a thriller, or a slasher. It never fully commits itself to any of these genres, and instead chooses to slowly oscillate between these three centres of gravity, managing an uneasy orbit through this trinary system of pathos and despair.

Somehow, this works. The acting is lumpy, and the pacing is a little deranged, yet it is watchable from start to finish. There are attempts at obfuscation, of layered narrative and meanings within meanings; all of this is fairly trite, but not so malodorous that I was compelled to rage-quit the movie.

There is little originality in this film, but that really isn't what this melange of genres is about. It does manage to engender feelings of unease and tension, and this is what counts. Watchable, if you have the time to give to an imperfect, but adequate, low-budget attempt.

"A Perfect Host": This guy ain't Sellin' Soap, Suckers
jtncsmistad13 July 2020
The new horror thriller "A Perfect Host" reveals a couple things.

One, that many of us still remain unfailingly polite even when faced with ABSOLUTE jerkdom.

And, two, there actually ARE even worse MLM rackets than Amway out there.

And if this flick is any indication, it's enough to raise the dead.

Very Low Budget Poorly Written Movie
zac-682748 February 2020
Apparently the people that gave high ratings are related to the remedial writers & movie crew! Very poor acting with a senseless storyline!

Not worth the time to stay

I seldom write a BAD review, I am open minded to artistic license and the attempt to write a decent screen play. But I will say to all those "under 18's" who gave it a 10 star you have never seen a Good movie in your life. If anyone rated this above a 1-2 star I wonder what films you have seen to compere it to.. it deserves not even a HALF star out of 10 just for the waste of money and time it took to of produced it. The plot was minimalist, the concept intent was good but missed the mark in dialog , blocking, Camera angle direction, ,etc etc... Even having to have the Director and screen writer try to star in it show just how low budget and lacking it was of merits. None of the one dimensional Characters (except the final plot twist in the end) were even believable and the on screen acting showed just how bad it is as a piece of "art" . There lack and inevitability that anyone would not be aware of their surroundings is more than suspension of disbelief. There are School and art house and lower budget films out there who merit more than this waste of time. It is abysmal at least and I kept looking at how much longer of the 1:13 min it was until it was over. I would Highly suggest watching it if you enjoy bad quality cinema. And it does not even enter in the category of a cult bad film, just simply a time waster.

Fit For Life!!!!!!!

+1 Star for the weirdness of the beginning......

But now the movie is going to have to start showing some substance.......

Weird, home owner / health nut, and really NUT in general shows up and weirdness ensues....

-1 Star that Ben and Ave sit still for the foolishness of Tad.......

Okay the movie is kinda silly....

-1 Star for some serious unbelievable silliness, but really there's not that much to kill the score on

The ending wasn't impressive... but....ah well...

Meh

Not great but I watched the whole thing. Some comments are mentioning comedy. I did not pick up on any Intentional humor in this film, I don't think there is any. The production value is low, camera work is pretty good though. 4 out of 10.

Boring
noahschoonderwoerd27 March 2024
I watched alot of low budget, low quality movies lately. Some were pretty good, other couldnt entertain me. But then i stumbled across this movie. And turned out it wasn't that bad at all what i watched in the past.

The movie is boring. There is no horror in it. Absolute 0. Not even a jumpscare, altough there were some pathetic tries.

The story was hard to figure out and even if i could figure it out, i didn't care less to do it. The characters are boring and i had no feeling at all through the whole movie with any of them.

The 1 star is already too much but i think it is for the acting which was close to be okey.

Not that bad actually
helldesk66626 May 2020
All this talk about the ratings people give... Admittedly, giving this film a 10 is quite far-fetched. And checking out the profiles of those who do, you will most likely find their account was created recently and this is the only film they have reviewed.

Could be, could be. After all, we all started at some point and maybe this is a gem that got people off their sofa and onto IMDB.

And then there are those that purposefully rate it a 1, "to counter the ridiculous 10 ratings", which basically is doing just the same thing, but in the opposite direction. Funny.

Anyway, I expected nothing, but this movie is really not that bad. The storyline, the acting, soundtrack and the pace all felt right to me. Loved the little twists too. Also, keeping it brief at 1 hour and 13 minutes. Which I respect.

I never read reviews or watch trailers before I watch a movie. Because I want to go in "blind". And this one pretty much did well for me. Minimalistic and low budget yes, but well staged. Not a flick that I would wildly recommend to friends, but not something I would advise against either.

Tastes and preferences differ, and as always that is a good and perfectly natural thing.

I don't get this movie or it's reviews
madmanblue5 September 2023
I want to start by saying that in general I love bad movies. This movie is not bad in the fun way.

Every single character has extremely vague motivations, is an absolute moron and doesn't make sense even in the context of the universe the movie is set in.

There is absolutely no comedy (either intentional or otherwise), it's just characters being incredibly stupid/confusing.

There are a couple of creepy moments (only thing that earned this movie a 2) but they are generally ruined by the following scene.

The ending isn't a "twist" it's just another thing that happens that's confusing and poorly explained.

All in all, I honestly don't know who I could recommend this movie to, it's just an annoying, confusing mess with characters that feel just real enough to be unlikable but not silly enough to be funny.

Just do yourself a favour, live an extra 83 minutes of your life and skip this movie.

I quite liked it
Opacus_Music4 February 2020
Mind you, this is not a great movie nor is it anything we haven't seen before but they sure did a good job at keeping it interesting. Even dough the movie does not advertise itself as a horror comedy, it boasts a great deal of dark humor but never at the expense of the unsettling dynamic and atmosphere. The acting is not award winning level but fair. The movie score is effective. Overall, there is no boredom here and the film does not suffer from its obvious low budget. Its a good little movie to watch when you're in the mood for something dark and you just don't know what to put on.

Enjoyed this movie very much!
ericaadenny6 February 2020
So many things I liked about this movie. I love thrillers, I love comedy's, and this blended those two really well. It's actually very fun/thrilling to watch, beautifully and uniquely shot. You don't see movies shot like this everyday and I loved that about it. I really enjoyed the dialogue, it had me laughing and the characters are fun to watch. In a way you can relate with the characters, we've all had a weird airbnb experience at some point! Overall thought this was very well done.

Really amazing film.

Was engaged the whole time, and surprised. I was scared but also audibly laughing. It didn't feel like a film where they were trying to do too much. Awesome artistic taste!

A Perfect Host: Creepy Airbnb Horror Worth Booking
kevinthecritic-1520025 January 2020
Thank you to Tricoast Entertainment and Uncork'd Entertainment for reaching out to me on this review. I have had many pleasant experiences with Airbnb. On paper, the idea of paying someone to stay in a home or apartment (with a potential social circle of roommates) sounds great, but it can also go very wrong. Chad Werner's A Perfect Host (also known as Adonis Complex) is one such example of the latter, offering a creepy, mostly believable horror movie with an 80'sesque synthesizer score and characters who act realistically rather than the morons who normally populate these things. Longtime friends Sam (Jeff McQuitty) and Avery (Koko Marshall) have booked a lakeside Airbnb for the weekend and are looking forward to a good time with friends despite some messy personal history. All seems well until they meet their host Tad (Brady Burleson Johnson), a fitness fanatic who proceeds to interrupt their weekend at every turn. Tad's increasingly boundary-pushing behavior leads Sam and Avery to realize their perfect host may be anything but. I've always enjoyed films about sinister people psychologically messing with others, and A Perfect Host fits that bill. Writer-director Chad Werner gets believable performances from his cast and slowly creeps up the tension via the natural sounds of the area as well as a synthesized score. Some of the camera choices are a tad confusing (Occasionally the camera will focus on seemingly random objects), but it is overall well-shot and builds to a solid finale. The jump scares are slightly overused but always effective, and the film has occasional humor to offset the tension. Overall, A Perfect Host is a solid horror movie with believable characters and a creepy vibe. Book A Perfect Host. Likely would be rated PG-13 for Some Violence and Brief Strong Language A Perfect Host will be available on DVD and VOD February 4th, 2020.

Fun Little Flick for Spooky Season
hagentimothy21 October 2020
Fun little film! It made me squirm, it made me jump, and it also made me giggle. Worth the quick watch during spooky season.

To me it felt like some scrappy, young filmmakers got together and used what they had to make something happen.

A creepy take on a vacation getaway
neemak4 February 2020
A totally believable story, with the main antagonist (Tad, the host) popping up throughout the film in a creepy, yet believable, manner. The suspense in the film built well, with good development of the characters so that you felt invested in what happened to them. Would definitely recommend!

Never saw that coming!!
scottsmail-399203 February 2020
This is a creepy but fun movie that really makes you think about the fact that in the world of AirBnB that we live in, this really could happen! Probably has. There is a lot of suspense and a twist that we never saw coming. I read that this was the directors first feature film. If so, great job! If not, great job! Creepy fun storyline that we really enjoyed. PS-we now only stay at the Hilton.

A FRESH TAKE ON HORROR
will-296894 February 2020
This movie feels like a Kubrick film with a completely new voice. It's chilling. The story moves with such precise filmmaking that it's clear Werner is always three steps ahead. The acting is wonderful. The leads are natural while Tad (Brady Johnson) excelled at remaining grounded but terrifying. Highly recommend!
