Those of us seeing wild ducks waddling . . .

, , , through our yards every now and then are prone to be on the lookout for good waterfowl recipes. Just as some of the neighbors around here are known for their squirrel stew, raccoon ribs or possum pot-luck, we all believe that it's always open season on trespassing turkeys, geese, peacocks and ducks. A few of us may draw the line at swans, owls, hawks or eagles, but such mean birds really are not designed for good eating, anyway. On the other hand, as THE UGLY ALMOND DUCKLING illustrates, many critters including cattle, chickens and pigs behave as if they're fully aware of their prime objectives: To become our lunch or supper. ALMOND DUCKLING depicts such creature behavior very accurately.

Film historians often cite this episode as the one . . .

. . . containing the moment which would soon be referred to as The Bullwinkle Show "jumping the shark." The said infamous outrage is pinpointed, of course, with the egregious repeat of Bullwinkle's Corner: PAT-A-CAKE, which was one of the more maligned entries in said series of one-minute films. PAT-A-CAKE is NOT authored by Edgar Allan Poe, or even that old standby, Bob Lou Stevenson. It kind of sounds like something Gertrude Stein may have said, if she had been born 400 years earlier and came done with an even worse case of dementia. This terse verse is too juvenile for Louisa Mae Alcott to feature during LITTLE WOMEN. Its best use would be as cannon fodder.

That's One Smart Moose!

Bullwinkle finally puts on the Kirward Derby and begins to spout advanced mathematics. Boris and Fearless Leader continue to fight over who will wear it after it blows off Bullwinkle's head. In extras we have a tale of ancient China and the Ugly Almond Duck, where all the ducks compete to be put in the king's casserole. Peabody and Sherman visit Lawrence of Arabia.
