Hollywood writers have some notes after Mattel revealed its Barbie Women in Film toy line for the annual “Career of the Year” collection.
Following the widespread popularity of Greta Gerwig’s Warner Bros. summer release Barbie, which topped a billion dollars at the global box office, Mattel announced this week that it will release Barbie dolls in four film-related career paths: studio executive, director, cinematographer and movie star.
Not included in the line is a doll representing screenwriters, which is particularly notable following the recent Writers Guild of America strike that saw scribes pounding the pavement to remind the industry of their importance in the filmmaking process. A number of Hollywood writers took to social media to point out that the pivotal career path is not a Barbie option.

We’re now at the end of 2023, and the list of canceled Netflix shows for the year is now complete. Below, we’ll look at all the high-profile cancelations (that have been announced anyway) as of December 2023.
Cancelations are a painful part of being a Netflix subscriber. There’s nothing worse than starting a show only to discover that it’ll never properly conclude. Netflix isn’t the only network by any means to cancel, but given the scale of the service globally and the amount of content it produces, it’s easy to see why Netflix is the boogeyman.
With that said, Netflix does renew plenty, with over 150 shows at any given time set to return for future seasons.
There will also be lots and lots of shows that fall outside of this list into two camps.
Naturally ending shows include The Crown, Firefly Lane, and Never Have I Ever.

First debuting on Netflix in 2021 and releasing its second season in March 2023, the fantasy series Invisible City, created by Carlos Saldanha, has been announced not to return for a third season.
Numerous Brazillian X accounts were Tweeting about the show’s cancelation, but most didn’t name the source. Thankfully, we dug and found that the actor Marco Pigossi was ultimately behind the cancelation news. Pigossi plays the main character, Eric, in the show.
In a post on Instagram on December 16th, the actor doesn’t explicitly say the show was canceled but does bid farewell to his character.
Translated into English Rank Week in Top 10 March 19th, 2023 to March 26th, 2023 11,130,000 9 1 March 26th, 2023 to April 2nd, 2023 7,850,000 (-29%) 6 2
Sadly, those numbers likely weren’t enough to warrant future seasons. Google Trends suggests the global interest in the show was over 50% less going into the second season.

“The Night Agent” might not be pulling “Wednesday” numbers, but the new thriller series had a very strong first week on Netflix.
The Shawn Ryan-created thriller topped Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV series list in its first week of availability, with 168.71 million hours viewed. That’s the most for Week 1 of a new Netflix series, English-language or otherwise, since “Wednesday.” And we’re only counting four days of viewing, as “The Night Agent” debuted on a Thursday; Sunday night is Netflix’s weekly cutoff.
Beyond new debuts, “The Night Agent’s” start was the single best week for a show since Season 2 of “Ginny & Georgia” premiered to 180 hours viewed. Last week marked the third-biggest week for the debut of a Netflix show since the streamer started publicizing the Top 10 lists.

A second season of the Brazilian series “Invisible City” just dropped, with only five episodes to cover some massive new characters and half-baked storylines. While season 1 follows Eric’s story of figuring out the mystery of his wife’s death, this one takes place in a different city with different mythological creatures and a new ‘gold’ problem in town. A lot goes down in the five short episodes, leaving us slightly confused and losing interest in the unique ideas that the show set out to present to us. Let’s try and break down “Invisible City” Season 2.
Spoilers Ahead

“Invisible City” is a Brazilian Netflix original series that came out two years ago now. The first season follows the story of Eric and his daughter Luna, who go through a rollercoaster of events that finally leads Eric to stab himself in the chest. Long story short, he was possessed by the central antagonist of the show, the “dry body,” who wanted to harm the entities and the forest. Season 1 had an interesting premise and was a retelling of Brazilian folklore with a modern twist. The underlying message is don’t mess with nature, or she’ll get back at you, and mixed in this fantasy setting, it was pretty smooth sailing. The mystery was enticing, making us wonder who these entities were. Our biggest qualm with the series was that they killed off our favorite character, Isac, leaving us bitter to watch season 2. Either way, there’s still a lot to learn,...

Invisible City (Cidade Invisível) is a series directed by Júlia Pacheco Jordão and Luis Carone. It stars Marco Pigossi, Alessandra Negrini and Jéssica Córes.
The Invisible City is a very original fantasy and thriller series that knows how to swim wonderfully between the waters of the spiritual and criminal worlds, between the supernatural and the detective genre, and it also has an original aesthetic proposal.
About the Series
A murder thriller that gets lost in local legends, in the world of spirits and magic, and then presents us with a message of environmental conservation.
Very entertaining, well handled and accomplished visual effects (CGI), achieving an attractive series on several levels and one that knows how to continue the successes of the first season in these five new episodes.

March is a time for madness, whether it comes from basketball, Mercury retrograde, or a person’s home streaming habits. Netflix joins in on the chaos by updating its library with all three “Hangover” movies, a whole lot of workout content, “Magic Mike Xxl,” and much, much more.
On March 9, the streamer will premiere Part 2 of “You” Season 2, starring Penn Badgley, Charlotte Ritchie, and Ed Speleers. The five remaining episodes find Joe (Badgley) trapped in a volatile dance with London mayoral candidate and serial killer Rhys (Speleers), trying to prevent more murders but also not go down for the many he’s committed in the process. The trailer shows Joe and Kate (Ritchie) growing closer, more brushes with Kate’s wealthy socialite friends, and the return of Victoria Pedretti as Joe’s wife Love — or maybe the ghost of his wife, and of sins past.

Netflix is readying the debut of crime original “Santo,” which bows Sept., 16, marking a new milestone for the U.S. streaming giant – its first fiction project shot between Spain and Brazil, two of its key overseas markets.
A major undertaking, the series packs experienced partners and behind-the-camera talent. Produced by Nostromo Pictures (“Through My Window”) with support from Prodigo Films (“Invisible City”), the six-episode series is created by Carlos López (“La Embajada”) and directed by Vicente Amorim (“Yakuza Princess”), an auteur who has consolidated in the last few years as one of Brazil’s foremost action series helmers, having been attached to direct Netflix banner title “Senna.”
“Santo” follows two dogged but divergent cops, Cardona and Millán, as they chase an elusive drug trafficker implicated in occult-linked crimes occurring between Salvador de Bahia, Brazil and Madrid.

The Boys is one of the biggest shows on streaming.
It premiered at a time when the superhero genre was saturated, offering viewers a fresh and exciting spin.
Now, with three seasons under its belt, the franchise is taking viewers to a college for supes.
We've known about the show for a while now, but it was essentially in development hell for some time as changes were made to the cast.
Prime Video on Friday confirmed the series will be titled...
Gen V.
It's not a bad title, but it won't exactly make any of the casual fans of the original series associate the two shows.
That will leave an almighty job for the marketing team. Then again, maybe Prime Video will call it The Boys: Gen V, or something.
Time will tell.

Netflix commemorated five years of local production releases in Brazil last November announcing a drive into production outside the country’s two traditional powerhouse bases of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
Last week, Netflix Brazil revealed more productions set across the country’s vast terrain to bring compelling and fresh narratives to the platform.
“Ricos de Amor” relocates to Northern Brazil for a second season. Produced by São Paulo’s Prodigo Films, “Invisible City,” the first live action title from “Ice Age” creator Carlos Saldanha, has direction and production teams working out of Belém, Pará, in northern-most Brazil.
“This is a very special series, with diverse artists, with accents from all over Brazil,” said Lucy Alves of “Só Se For Por Amor,” in which she stars. “When we see something this big being done in the countryside we identify a lot… it’s immediate,” she added.

L.A.-based, Brazilian filmmaker Carlos Saldanha, director of “Ice Age” and “Rio” franchise movies and creator of Netflix series “Invisible City,” is joining forces with Brazil’s outfit Ventre Studio and Warner Bros. Pictures to co-create and direct superhero feature project “Iemanjá – Ocean’s Goddess.”
“Iemanjá” is planned as the first movie in a series that transports the Brazil’s Candomblé gods to a superhero universe, being a pioneering Brazilian production of this genre.
Following a crucial theme in Brazilian culture, “Iemanjá – Ocean’s Goddess” will tell the story of Iemanjá, an Orixá or goddess adored by the Brazilian people and also known as the Queen of the Sea. With Ogum, the King of War, as her mentor, Iemanjá, who has psychic abilities, battles with Iansã, an Orixá worshiped as the Storm Goddess.
“Iemanjá is a symbol to all Brazilian people, independently of the religion or faith of each one of us.

Photo: ‘Invisible City’/Netflix The last decade has seen a resurgence in fairytale narratives - and not just the live-action, Disney-flavoured kind. The culture saw a shift to darker interpretations of this folklore, with films such as, ‘Red Riding Hood’ (2011), ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ (2012), and ‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’ (2013). Television got in on this trend too, with the lighter fare of ABC’s ‘Once Upon a Time’ and the darker, police procedural ‘Grimm’, the latter of which traced fairytale creatures back to their European roots. ‘Invisible City’ is Brazil’s answer to this trend. Taking prompts from Brazilian folklore, program creator Carlos Saldanha weaves an environmental police officer’s investigation into his wife’s death with carefully crafted mythology, stunning visuals, and a talented cast. Tribes was among them, and tells the story of a group of siblings in 2074, separated after a global disaster that leaves Europe riven by warring factions. Also sounding like a good time is South Korean comedy Space Sweepers, about a spaceship crew tasked with cleaning up intergalactic trash.
There’s also the arrival of Parks and Recreation in full – perfect for a lockdown rewatch, new stand-up, all of The Vampire Diaries, and Jason “It’s a megalodon” Statham in The Meg.
We’ll update this list with new arrivals as they’re confirmed.

February may be the shortest month, but that doesn’t mean streaming services can ignore their duty to entertain us at all times. In that mission, Netflix is making a decent effort in February 2021. This isn’t the most jam-packed month the major streamer has trotted out just yet but there are plenty of new originals to get the job done.
Netflix has a few original series of note this month. The party begins with Kid Cosmic on Feb. 2. This animated series is a comic-tinged adventure from Craig McCracken, creator of the Powerpuff Girls. That’s followed by the Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl-starring Firefly Lane on Feb. 3 and Behind Her Eyes on Feb. 17. Perhaps the biggest sleeper this month, however, is Tribes of Europa. This post-apocalyptic adventure series premieres on Feb. 19.
There are also quite a few intriguing Netflix original movies in February 2021. Malcolm and Marie stars John David Washington...
