Smith describes the atomic bomb as "like a thousand suns". This is a reference to J. Robert Oppenheimer who described the first atomic test as being "as bright as a thousand suns".
The title, French for "bad faith", is a concept from existentialist philosophy. The concept is that human beings adopt false values and act inauthentically (in bad faith) under pressure from social forces. it describes the situation the main characters faced after losing the war.
When Childan thinks he is about to be killed, he recites part of a 16th century Japanese death poem by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-98). A rough translation of the original poem is "As dew it fell / As dew it vanished / My transitory self / What happened in Naniwa / Was all a dream inside a dream." In his version Childan skips the fourth line mentioning Naniwa, the original name of Osaka and site of Hideyoshi's Osaka Castle, which was completed just a year prior to his death.
