When you got romantic even in the middle of meannesses
kevindaroit26 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It is not a movie that induces you to like the main character from the beginning, and you wonder many times whether Andrej has any common-sense capability of judgement in discerning between right and wrong, good and bad. While in the first minutes you get struck by the coldness and maybe meanness showed by Andrej's mother, you can't help think that he is a lazy lad, interested only in parties, and with criminal tendencies and no sense of responsibility, and that he probably deserves all which he's going through; but you also wonder why he has grown like that: can his parents be really devoid of responsibilities in what their son is at present?

The "centre" reality is quite what you expect: a place of mutual violences among the "guests", but it is also appalling the totally lack of autority in those who are supposed to rule the centre, but who can't at all, with their gentle manners, gain the respect of the most violent (we can say, the most dangerous) among them.

Andrej's wilful involvment in Zhele's traffics makes you feel that there is no hope for Andrej's redemption. Meanwhile, however, you got affectionate with the main character and you begin to understand that Andrej has a strong partiality for Zhele and that, perhaps, it's for love that he follows the "bad guy" in his oppressions and thefts. Actually you get so involved in Andrej's feelings that you start throwing away any moral sense (which begins to be a burden, given the continuous injustices and infamies done by Andrej for Zhele's sake, above all the infamous treatment Andrej uses with his roommate, who had always been kind towards him) and just hope what he hopes: that his love is returned, even if the beloved really seems to have no goodness at all.

The scene when Zhele talks to Andrej about going to Amsterdam together, which contains possibly the only really sweet moment (there are other kisses in the movie, but none of them is really more than either merely lusty or induced by alcohol and drugs), marks the zenith of the romantic fancies and it's perfect to put you at the right height for the final quick fall. When Andrej visits Zhele, saying he was there just "to see him", you have the very last moment of warmness; Zhele's reaction stops everything, and sudden Andrej shows some moral sense, finally, and you get back yours just in time to feel all the wickednesses of the ending.

Andrej's outing on the social media is one of the part the very sly revenge by Zhele, but mates' teasings are nothing compared to the telephonic reaction of Andrej's mother, who finally shows with no doubt who she really is (quite an insensitive and hard-hearted person); Andrej's two (and I say two) tears are impeccable, and his "I am what I am" is quite moving. By the way, it is highly noticeable that the mother was always harsh about her son's bad behaviours, but the only thing she is not disposed to forgive at all (so that she basically rejects him as a son) is his being homosexual (which, unlike all the other things, was not a choice, and therefore not a guilt).

The revenge on Zhele (alas it is not clear whether he got just hurt or killed, but I'm speaking as if it were the former case) really appears the only possible form of justice Andrej could try to obtain, and maybe also the only language Zhele may understand as a punishment for his abuses, if he ever is capable of repentance.

The movie is well acted and quite plausible in depicting situations and dealings. It is not a happy movie at all, but it is not so violent as one may expect (it strucks you more by showing degredations and meannesses than through heavy violence). I don't think it has many clichés: indeed when Andrey put the hands in Zhele's trousers I dreaded a very tough beating up, but unespectedly things took another turn. Of course you know somehow from the beginning that things will end up badly, but you really don't know how and the plot is not so predictable.

Severe reality
inarocks9826 December 2019
The movie portrays the severe and brutal reality of the still very present mindset in the Balkans, which includes toxic masculinity, delinquency, drug-abuse and homophobia, and which can have especially dark consequences for LGBTQ+ youth in these countries. Heartbreaking, heavy and at times very hard to watch, but unfortunately a story which is real life for many young adults.

A glimpse into another world
laduqesa5 August 2021
I'm sure there are boneheaded, knuckle-dragging yobs in every country but it looks like Slovenia has more than its fair share of them. The actors playing the thugs were perfectly suited to their roles especially Matej Zemljic playing Andrej who we realise from the beginning is different from his amoral fellows even before he lands in the institution. He's not wicked per se, just lost in a sea of contradictions regarding his lower middle class origins, his sexuality, his running with a richer pack while having no money. He wants to fit in.

He is the same in the juvenile centre. He wants to be mates with the bad boys to the extent of surpassing them but we can see it's not really in him. And he gets infatuated with Zele, the leader of the guys.

The story follows Andrej's desperate wish to be a part of the gang and how this is manipulated by the sociopathic Zele. The group commits worse and worse crimes and assaults and the one who gets into trouble for absconding is always Andrej.

Zele wields his sexuality like an axe to ensnare Andrej but in a couple of scenes he looks as though he cares, but the portcullis comes crashing down again. The final disillusion leads to the shocking events of the final scenes. The ending is as perfect as it could possibly have been with Andrey contemplating his future after burning his bridges with his colleagues and, indeed, society.

I didn't look at the clock once during the film. The casting and dialogue were perfect, the length was just right. A definite "must see".

Slovenia does US TVM
euroGary30 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In his late teens, Andrej is a handful: smoking, drinking, doing drugs etc. After he assaults a girl with whom he can not 'get it up', he is sent to a reform school where the ineffectual bearded social workers who are supposed to run the place are cowed by the inmates, whose ringleader is Zele, a hard-partying, sexually-ambiguous bully-boy. Andrej, attracted to Zele, is eager to please him; it can only end in tears.

To anyone who has seen any prison/reform school film, there is nothing really new about this except a) it is set in Slovenia and b) there is no shower-based male rape scene. Apart from that, plotting is strictly by-the-numbers: Andrej is at first ostracised by the other boys but gradually wins their acceptance; there's the ultimate betrayal; and Andrej's pet rat goes the way of almost all animals who have the misfortune to find themselves in this kind of production.

Fans of husky East European boys will be pleased by the numerous shirtless scenes (although may be disappointed that that is pretty much all that is on display, skin-wise). The roles do not stretch the young actors, all of whom are simply required to play the tough guy, but as Andrej, Matej Zemljic's facial reaction when he opens a shoebox containing a nasty surprise is pretty effective. (Unfortunately IMDb does now allow the correct spelling of Matej's surname!)

A bit like a US network TV version of a much tougher film - there is not even much swearing! - but worth seeing once. I saw it at the 2018 London Film Festival.

loneliness portrait
Kirpianuscus29 May 2020
I saw it as a film about parenthood and the lost of connections between family members. In same measure , as the fall of the prestige of teachers. Not the less, as realistic portrait of a teenager life, reduced as a sort of deep loneliness by parents, social system , society. Two details are real significant for me- the refuge in the yard of kinder garden and the return of money to the Gipsy family. Short, a heardbreaker film about deep loneliness.

Brutal
Neon_Gold13 January 2023
This is a bleak movie. I don't know why I didn't realise that when I saw the title. I thought it was gonna be like a gay drama, it's not!

It takes risks that are very tricky to pull off and I'm not 100% sure it does. Making the majority of the leads horrible people is tough, it makes you unable to root for them. They try and counter act this with our main lead but I think they needed to develop him a little bit more at the start, this would have endeared us to him a little more.

The end is quite a gut punch tho and it does kinda frame the movie a little bit different for me. It's just such a helpless and dark movie. Super super depressing but definitely watchable.

Excellent film on youth detention center . Brutal and powerful. Matej Zemljic gives an incredible performance as a tormented young man trying to find his way in life. The director keeps things tense and involving and it is a remarkable character study of conflicted youth. Saw this at TIFF 2018 and was blown away. Congrats to all, especially Matej who gave a breakout performance!

Fun, but superficial
markyslair1 December 2019
The movie was OK to watch, there were things that just passed and could have been deeper, or simply less superficial. What about emotions, what about showing contemplation, what about providing some small additions to give the characters more character?

About the protagonist and supporting actors, I have to say, I never really was convinced about the role he took upon himself. I also did not feel a gay vibe and wasn't convinced there was true homosexual attraction. The movie might have just been about men experimenting as I did not feel a genuine engaging spark between those interacting. The move is superficial in so many ways, you can easily fall asleep. This is a television movie.

Subtle reality
JimineyCricket15 July 2020
The acting was probably the best part of the movie, consistently above average throughout the film. The plot was not mind blowing but it kept the feeling of the movie relatable which I think had a better overall impact for what the director was going for.

I do recommend watching this because it provides insight into Slavic youth culture and the barriers, hurdles they are facing in these times.

Consequences
CinemaSerf5 January 2023
This has quite an interesting premise to it. It centres on "Andrej" (Matej Zemljic), a young man whose life is pretty adrift. His parents and his school cannot manage him so he is sent to a detention centre where he initially falls foul of, then befriends "Zele" (Timon Sturbej). Now this fella is the local drug dealer, money lender and general hoodlum and "Andrej", though wayward, isn't that type of guy - he loves his pet rat! What seems to cement their bond is that the former becomes infatuated by the latter, and is soon acting as his enforcer. Thing is, is he just being used as a puppet by a "Zele" who is fully aware that his friend is smitten with him - indeed, even indulges it now and again - or might something meaningful come of it? Zemljic is on good form here. He presents his character's confused naivety and his struggle for self-identification and affection well. Sturbej is also effective as his manipulative pal, but the story itself is a bit rudderless. The plot could have been developed more had Darko Sante allowed the two principal characters more screen time on their own. I don't mean in-the-sack screen time, but some more opportunity for us to understand a little more about how "Andrej" became a pawn so easily/readily/willingly. The ending is not unexpected, but I couldn't help but feel rather let down by it's angry simplicity - it really does snuff out any semblance of hope or optimism. The production and direction are fine, though, and overall I think it is well worth a watch.

Story just doesn't work.
mooveephantom6 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I know that European sensibilities are different, but the screenplay is just terrible. The main reason, the lead is 100% non-sympathetic. He is an awful person and doesn't give an indications that there is something redeeming about his character. This tanks the story and made me lose interest really quick. The closeted gay boy theme/tragic ending is so tired and clichéd. The other main actor "villain" is weak as well as a character. I don't know why this film has such mid to high ratings. Hot European boys on screen does not make for a good movie.

A Total Surprise
SwollenThumb20 June 2020
A film that just gets better and better as it goes along. Acting, directing, story all superb. We don't see many movies from Slovenia, that's a pity if this is their standard. And Matej Zemljic in lead role - is in every scene, a powerhouse performance. (Directed & written by Darko Stante)

Tiresome
TheGryph26 July 2023
I suppose there is a story being told in this film, but as the movie drags on it becomes increasingly tiresome to watch it.

Endless bullying and thuggery! Yes, we get it guys, you are pretending to be tough. Yawn. Who cares? What is the point to this story? Is it meant to be a commentary on out-of-control youth in Eastern Europe? That story could have been told in a 15-minute short.

A feature-length film should go somewhere, and this one doesn't, unless you consider nowhere to be a destination. Haha.

Complicating the viewing experience, I found that the subtitles lagged behind the dialogue. This added to the tedium and frustration of watching.

As for the advertised gay storyline, it is very minor and doesn't become evident until late in the film. So I am not sure shat this movie was meant to be. Regardless, it doesn't achieve it.

A movie with not many clichés
minimaster-6773425 August 2019
The first opinion I have on the movie is that it has not many clichés in it, which is something you usually see, and it surprised me for not having too many. I usually don't mind clichés and I even hoped for some more in this movie, but I did appreciate the lack of it nonetheless.

Leaves me wanting more

The characters are real bad, but they are not repulsive. In fact, I connect with them and feel for them. The story is good. I wish the film was longer. The ending just leaves me wanting more.

Clean clear powerhouse
sjanders-8643029 November 2020
Slovenia masterpiece. If you want to know how to spot a masterpiece don't use subtitles. Here is exactly what every film could be One vision. He hits the girl and is sent to a youth detention. How does he, Matej Zemljic, grow in this environment to handle his secret. He learns. He fights the bullies. He conquers his fears and survives. Such a clear, unstoppable train. Masterpiece of work.

Powerful and disturbing
chipwcrow11 June 2020
This is what it's like to live in parts of Slovenia. The portrayal of how criminal behavior is conducted. The portrayal of how people are taken advantage of is disturbing. The acting is powerful.

usnavynuke13 June 2020
I actually didn't see that exact ending, and the subsequent acting from the main character in those finale few moments, coming at all. Fantastic. Loved this. Didn't realize it was from Slovenia until reading reviews. Understood the ending perfectly when I discovered this fact.

It wasn't your average clichés of prancing around "MISS THING" type of flick. The actors did great job playing low life trash that just happens to be gay.
