More like love will tear us apart
Stanlee1076 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is an intentional confusing indie film about a couple whose seemingly great relationship gradually falls apart. However, I did figure out the twist before it was revealed. It is super low budget but it may have a lot of people guessing up until the end. It shows the protagonist's decent into madness/ psychological distress and flashback, present & future scenes are shown purposely out of order. This helps the viewer put themselves into the protagonist's shoes or at the very least sympathise with him.

Suffers from Second Act Atrophy
medelste28 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
No hardcore spoilers, just covering my behind.

"Mentally Apart" is a not-bad low budget film that suffers from its construction. As a failed writer myself, I can tell you firsthand that this type of story carries a tremendous challenge of "second act atrophy". This means the second act consists of a lot of Sound And Fury, but doesn't advance the plot one bit -- you could effectively fast-forward the middle 45 minutes, and not miss them at all. The story desperately searches for ways to fill run-time before it gets to the Big Reveal. This is always a near-fatal script flaw, and M.A. doesn't escape it. The middle act is dreadfully slow, with nothing to show for it.

Speaking of the Big Reveal, I saw it coming after 30 minutes. Maybe you will, maybe you won't. But (minor spoiler) -- there is a serious Cellphone Hole at the end of Mentally Apart. Cellphone location can be tracked minute by minute, even years after the fact. Please tell me how months could have gone by without a knock on the door? You'll understand my point when you watch the film.

its pretty dull
jamiegates-284711 May 2021
I'm assuimng the 10/10 are all from either friends or makers of this film. Its didn't hold my attention, it wasn't a pyscholigical mind melt, it was in fact pretty dull, I switched it off after an hour of painful waiting for something to grab my enquiring mind. I'd skip this one if youi've read that this is a twisted mind warp, its not!

It's not for everyone but it's definitely for everyone who like to use their brain!

I don't know how to write a review without giving spoilers away. Let's just say this is a psychological masterpiece. It isn't a one time watch. The suspense holds your attention from the moment you hit play. Every single moment is connected to one thing and you'll just have to watch it to see. There is no movie like it in this generation for sure. Watching it a second time you start to realize all of the symbolisms, it's like watching a whole new movie. I highly recommend it.

I loved this movie's style and soundtrack. It kept me engaged and trying to guess what was going on. I also loved and enjoyed the actors' performances. It was such an artistic film all throughout.

Every word has a purpose.

Warning: Spoilers
Before watching I read the latest reviews and the one written about "second act" I just need to let those know about how the reviewer mentioned the cellphone (they got it wrong). I'm not going to spoil it for anyone and I'll keep the spoiler warning on just in case but what they said revolving around the phone is false. It's not a one time watch. Mentally Apart is a thinker at all times. When you think there's nonsense being discussed between the two characters actually is very symbolic to the story. Once you get it, you'll start to attach every word and moment to the finale. I gave it a 10/10 because yes it sounds like a broken record but the cost of the budget is really impressive on top of keeping myself engaged at every second. There are so many films with far bigger budgets and you are just ready to turn it off 5 mins in. On top of that it's beautifully crafted from the cinematography to the soundtrack. The performances are award winning. It would be nice to see what they can do with a studio backing them. A lot of indie films look the same typical shots closeup wide shot, medium, 3/4. This film the camera tells the story for you. Give it a chance.

Great movie and with such a small budget. Definitely something you'll need to watch a second time.

A riveting cinematic experience.
decouteproductions30 August 2020
The onscreen chemistry and performances of Christine James Walker and Larry Bernardo keep the viewer enthralled to the story. For an intimate Kammerspiel, there is always an important detail or event that enriches the experience. One can't overlook the impressive score made by Sascha Blank. Lastly, the director's style shares some positive similarities with the works of Christopher Nolan.
