Anime content has become increasingly popular among streamers over the past several years. Data from Parrot Analytics in January 2022 found that global demand for anime content grew 118% over the past two years, making it one of the fastest-growing content genres by that metric during the pandemic.
So it should be no surprise that AMC Networks’ anime-focused streaming service Hidive is looking to significantly up its content library. AMC has announced a deal with Japan’s Mainichi Broadcasting System (Mbs) to grant the exclusive rights to broadcast a portion of Mbs’s future schedule in all international markets outside of Asia. One Piece Film Red rocketed to the top of the box office chart in Saudi Arabia over the weekend, achieving the biggest-ever opening for a Japanese anime in the territory and dislodging Black Adam from the top slot.
Middle East and North Africa distributor Front Row Filmed Entertainment, which holds all rights to the film in the region, said its opening weekend in Saudi Arabia, including previews, drew 61,000 admissions for a box office of 1.04m.
The weekend runs across Friday and Saturday in the territory so the figures are calculated from Wednesday previews through to end-Saturday.
Japanese anime has a strong following in Saudi Arabia and One Piece Film Red is the third feature in the genre to top the box office in the territory over the past 18 months.

What if there was a device that allowed the user to enter other people's dreams? What if one of the devices was stolen by someone who could implant ideas in people's minds to control them? What kind of story could come out of this concept?
If your first thought is Christopher Nolan's "Inception," then congratulations, you played yourself. That film became the rare example of a movie that becomes a shorthand term for its premise — entering people's dreams. Still, it pales in comparison to the film it so blatantly rips off, Satoshi Kon's "Paprika," an anime movie adapted from Yasutaka Tsutsui's 1993 novel of the same name.
That novel was almost adapted to live-action over a decade ago by the late, great Wolfgang Petersen, but now Deadline reports that Tsutsui's "Paprika" is getting a second chance at becoming a live-action project, on the small screen. Cathy Yan has...

This Promised Neverland article contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 5, as well as the manga source material.
While Netflix-watchers eagerly anticipate The Promised Neverland Season 2, fans who watch the anime on Hulu or elsewhere are five episodes into the second season, and—for the most part—are increasingly nervous about the series’ narrative choices. After the latest episode, The Promised Neverland anime seems to be making major changes from the manga… and, by “changes,” I mean skipping entire arcs of the story, seemingly without any plans to replace them with narrative that bridges the beginning of this story with the end.
For anime-only fans (like this one), who have yet to read the manga, it is confusing. For fans of the manga who have been eager to see this full story adapted in anime form, it’s probably even harder to watch. Let’s talk about some of the major...

It’s been amazing to witness the growth of the anime industry in America. It used to be extremely difficult to find anime in the country and even then, it was a very select handful of programs that were only available with questionable dubs. Over the course of a few decades this niche genre of animation hasn’t just become a mainstream obsession, but it’s now actively sought by streaming services. Anime’s popularity in America has reached a point where there are now multiple streaming services that offer ways to consume this content. There’s no need to get unnecessarily overwhelmed with all of these options for where to get anime. Here’s a helpful breakdown of not just the anime-exclusive streamers, but also the services that you may already have that are full of satisfying anime content.

It’s the first day of September and you know what that means? Yes, Netflix has dropped its usual gigantic haul of new titles to kick off the month with. This time around, the streaming service has added over 30 movies and TV shows to its library. And amongst them are a huge number of bonafide classics from all different kinds of genres.
Most notably, the entire Back to the Future trilogy has returned on Netflix, allowing fans to rewatch all three parts of the beloved sci-fi franchise. Alternatively, if you’re in the mood for a musical, Grease is also up on the site from today. But wait, maybe you have a hankering for horror instead. September is nearly upon us, which means that Netflix will be adding a whole host of new movies and TV shows to their content library on the first day of the month, as they continue to assert their dominance over the competition in the streaming wars. If anything, the company could do with the focus shifting to pre-existing titles after finding themselves in the headlines for all the wrong reasons recently.
As well as the huge backlash that greeted the controversial first poster for French coming-of-age drama Cuties, Netflix drew criticism after canceling popular shows I Am Not Okay With This and The Society despite previously announcing that both had been renewed for second seasons, while Altered Carbon was also axed in what looks to be just the latest in a long line of cost-cutting measures.

The Promised Neverland, a story about a twisted orphanage, has built quite a following in a short period of time—first as a Vertigo manga series, then as an acclaimed anime series. Now, the Japanese franchise is getting a live-action television series with retail/streaming giant Amazon.
An English-language live-action television event series adapting The Promised Neverland is in development at Amazon Studios, which will produce with Fox 21. Promisingly, the studios have appointed Rodney Rothman to direct and executive-produce the series, coming off a successful Oscar-winning outing as co-director/co-writer of animated hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The script will be written by Meghan Malloy, who will also exec-produce, having worked with Rothman as a production consultant on Spider-Verse. Also onboard as executive producers are Heroes and Hawaii Five-0 actor Masi Oka, and Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon.
