Worth a watch!

It's not perfect. Don't expect intelligent writing or deep characters. Just accept it's a goofy show, good for some laughs and chuckles! It's not gonna be for everyone, but I think it's worth a shot

It deserves a fair shake.
ronniewhitedx13 June 2020
This show is immediately going to turn people off in the first 2 minutes of the first episode. Its definitely a aquired taste sorta show. I stuck around till the end for the stunning stop motion which is consistently impressive (not much of a surprise given the talent on board this project) and the juvenile humor slowly grew on me. It doesn't always hit... I'm fact I'd say most of the time it doesn't but when it does it's a pleasant surprise.

In conclusion it's not gonna change the world or anything, but if you go into knowing that you might be able to appreciate what's there.

A mixed bag!
jmgcrest19 June 2020
This show leaves a lot to be desired in terms of comedy. But when it works, it WORKS! For the most part, the jokes don't land well, often falling flat. Though there were moments throughout that had me laughing to the point of tears. Sadly those moments are far and few between. A saving grace for this show is the beautiful and clever art style. The toy aspect that the whole show has kept pulling me coming back in. The story had a great starting off point, however; eventually the over-the-top insanity derailed the main point of the story. The hole purpose the characters served became nearly lost by the end. Also there is character development, but it is sparse. And on one final note, the voice acting is excellent, (Thankfully!) Overall this show is worth watching if you have nothing else to do. It has enough going for it as to not be a waste of time. Also if you are a Robot Chicken fan, this will scratch that itch. If there is a second season, all I wish for is higher grade comedy.

Aside from loving the animation, I love the cast!! Some of my favorite actors in this. The characters crack me up. I love it! I don't know what people are expecting? It's ridiculous and that's funny! I can't stop laughing at the naked characters!!

Beautiful art style, unfunny writing

The trailer looked good, but sadly the first episode was unfunny and boring. The style is great though and works well.

It's a fun watch and has some really clever jokes but it could do a lot better
crazelord17 June 2020
EDIT: The show throughout the season gets better with character development and even having a few genuinely heart felt moments

There are a number of lines or jokes that are just absolutely hilarious and I like the idea and premise. The main problem I have is that it's another comedy show where basically except the main character everyone is either an idiot or a irredeemable assshole.

It takes me out of it at least. What makes these things funnier and flow better imo is when you have good or capable people as well to juxipose it.

Not really for me
BoxwoodExpress12 June 2020
Now I know I'm going to get ratioed for this but I don't care. Anyways I thought this show was going to be good. An adult animated medieval comedy with a deceiving art style seems right up my alley. But the show, in the end, was kinda sucky in my opinion.

Animation and Art Style: This is the best aspect of the show. The show reminds me of this obscure toon called Rick And Steve, The Happiest Gay Couple In All The World in that it has a cute stopmotion art style but the show itself is very crude and raunchy. Stop motion is rare and stop motion shows for adults are even rarer, so this show, in a sense, is a breath of fresh air.

Writing: The writing kinda stinks. The whole appeal of the show is just, oh look at us! We say bad words and have sex even though our art style looks like a 2000s PBS show! They also try to cram jokes in every nanosecond. I think this show would work if it was a bit more serious. Not super serious, but with a balanced mix of comedy and serious moments.

Characters: Patrick is a sympathetic protagonist, he clearly didn't want to break the dragon eggs and set fire to the town, but was coerced into doing so by his mean siblings. Patrick is determined to atone for his sins by becoming a knight/squire, but he stumbles along the way. However, I hate all the other character. They're painfully undeveloped, mean to Patrick, and don't give us a reason why we should care about them. However, I do like the Coral/Tulip pairing since it would rare positive lesbian representation in adult animation.

Music: There's not much to say about the music. All I can say is that it suits the medieval setting of the show well. I just wish the theme song would be longer, these days it seems like cartoon creators are too lazy to put full theme songs so they just put a title card with a bit of music.

Enjoyment: One thing we can all agree on about the show is that it's definitely not for everyone. If you enjoy crass humor, check this show out. If not, perhaps you shouldn't watch it. I feel sorry for whatever clueless parent thought this was a kids show and put this on for their kid, only to be appalled at the nudity and cussing.

How Am I Surprised
nasdagoodshepherd16 June 2020
The previous Hulu adult animated series was Solar Opposites and it was pretty funny as hell. Now they have a next one that is just as funny as Solar Opposites and that's Crossing Swords. This show was made by the same crew who worked on Robot Chicken, Titan Maximum, Hot Streets and Super Mansion and this show made me feel pretty positive when it comes to crazy and funny ranchy humor. The characters are funny, the writing is legit, the stop-motion animation is perfect and that is all I can ever say about it. I give Crossing Swords a 9.5/10

It took some time
KOOLAIDBRO14 July 2020
When I started it I struggled to not shut it off because it was not enjoyable or humorous at all. I pushed through and at the end of the first episode I actually let out a chuckle. That's kind of the way the season run is. It gets funnier and more entertaining as it goes. I actually started laughing here and there more and more and actually I wanted to keep watching where at the beginning it felt more like a chore. The animation and voice acting is fantastic. The script and comedy became better with each episode. This is dirty adult humor so if you're not into that stay the F away and wtf are you doing watching this in the first place? If you're looking for something life changing? Not for you. Do you want to sit down shut off your brain, have a few chuckles, and enjoy some stupidity? For you.

I tried to like it.
willieno28812 June 2020
After watching the first two episodes I thought, "I don't think I like this show." Then after watching the third episode I thought, "This show is terrible." The animation is fine but not very interesting. It's like a 90's kids program. The voice acting too was fine. The thing that annoyed me the most was the script. There are so many stupid, pointless and unfunny "jokes" in this show. They revolve around sex, gore and douchery. They sound like things that teenagers would talk about. It gets tiring very quickly. And finally, the characters are so unlikeable that I literally hate all of them. They have no redeeming features. Your main character should be flawed yet funny like Michael Scott in the Office or a quick witted rogue like Black Adder not some whiney, pitiful wannabe knight who shows no interesting chartacteristics at all. Every character is mean and stupid and ultimately so repelant that you end up hating every one of the weird looking peg dolls.

irreverent fun
SnoopyStyle25 December 2022
Patrick (Nicholas Hoult) is pushed by his friends into a quest to find a golden dragon egg. They smash up the eggs and the dragon takes revenge by burning down their village. Ten years later, he wants to redeem himself as a knight with King Merriman (Luke Evans). He wants to do good, but he's not that good. Broth (Adam Pally) is an even more incompetent knight wannabe.

It's a Lego-like animated show on Hulu. It's irreverent fun. I'm not sure if it's Hulu material. It's silly. It's ridiculous. It's blood splattering. It's Lego style. I like Patrick although sometimes he is frustratingly annoying. Despite some crazy turns, the show has plateaued after two seasons. It is as good as it's going get and they canceled it.

Fun Show
michaelpapelman5 December 2020
The first few episodes are basically "Medieval Robot Chicken" but it quickly finds its' own groove. It's a funny series with pretty interesting stories and a charm art style to boot. The last three episodes in particular are brilliant, and the main characters actually grow throughout. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it's great popcorn entertainment .

This show keeps getting better.
ereiss-2803714 December 2021
This is a short review. But this is how you do "claymation" - it's clever, different, and the jokes really do hit most of the time because the execution is done well. I've been binging on season 2 and cracking up. HULU we want more!

Gorgeous to look at but not funny
residentvl16 June 2020
Its just vulgar humor coming from child characters that's been done for decades. If you like seeing kids yelling insults at each other then you are treated to the wonderful visual design this show has but the characters and writing are not for me. I'd much rather see something less "mature" and more focused on genuine character. So I hope whoever worked on the visuals gets to make something adventure time/gravity falls like in the future.

Tries too hard... And fails
purusha-2312115 June 2020
Very unique art style, but bad, predictable writing. Few actually funny lines, sprinkled with way too many jokes. I would recommend if you're looking for a stupid show to watch for maybe some laughs and frustration at the horrible writing. It seems to get only a bit better after episode 5, but not by much.

Vulgar, Crass, lowbrow, and above all gut bustingly hilarious.
IonicBreezeMachine26 December 2020
Set in the dilapidated kingdom of Kingstown, Patrick (Nicholas Hoult) lives in the shadow of his siblings Reuben, Blarney, and Coral who all flaunt their "successes" as a bandit leader, alcoholic clown, and pirate queen respectively. Patrick tired of being seen as the black sheep in his family decides to become a squire with dreams of glory and knighthood, but his position more often than not leads him to suffering abuse and insults from the corrupt, incompetent, and cruel King Merrimen (Luke Evans) or his spoilt, angry, mischievous daughter Blossom (Maya Erskine). However when an assassin begins picking off ranking members of the kingdom's aristocracy, Patrick finds himself as the one person who can save the kingdom.

Created by John Harvatine IV and Tom Root and produced by Seth Green's Stoopid Buddy studios, Crossing Swords will feel pleasantly familiar to those who've seen the group's other stop motion comedy series. The show while still based around similar madcap over the top crass and vulgar humor seen in their other productions, finds itself anchored to a narrative (albeit a somewhat loose one) and I'm pleased to say that the results are actually pretty entertaining.

Nicholas Hoult as Patrick is perfect as the show's lead as he's constantly abused not just by his needlessly cruel siblings, but also the oppressively cruel world of Kingstown, it's citizens, and surrounding environments. Patrick isn't the bravest, smartest, and sneakiest of the characters, but he has an inherent goodness in him that he never allows the world to crush even when he's at his lowest point. Patrick's frustrations with the world and his desire to do good are often met with varying degrees of disaster in one form or another (even when Patrick is victorious, it's usually Pyrhic in one form or another) he still manages to find some piece of optimism in his situation that motivates him to keep moving forward. But all this would be for not were the show not filled with a good supporting cast.

The cast of Crossing Swords is filled with all manner of comic/character actors giving good comedic voices to the citizens of Kingstown be it Luke Evans as King Merrimen, Seth Green as charlatan magician Blinkerquartz, Adam Pally as Patrick's dimwitted best friend takes everything in stride, and Alanna Ubach as horny, acerbic, and vindictive Queen Tulip who gets a lot of laughs from her annoyance at King Merrimen's antics.

The animation as expected from Stoopid Buddy is really good. The characters in Crossing Swords are limbless and all look like Little Tikes peg people with square bodies and big round heads, but the producers put enough detail and movement surrounding the character models that style feels charming and fitting with the aesthetic choices. Also as expected the humor is lowbrow and based on all manner of sex references and four letter words, but the show keeps itself moving at such a quick pace and never drags on any particular gag that it feels like it's using these elements effectively and organically as part of the comedy rather than just relying on them wholesale as we've seen so many other lesser series try to do. Not every joke works as there's a scene involving peaches and semen that I thought was more cringe inducing than funny, but the jokes are so rapid fire that I never felt like they were overly drilled in and quickly moved on from them.

Crossing Swords is funny show that manages to bring the raunch and the funny. While it probably doesn't rank with some of the best shows in adult animation, I had enough belly laughs in the course of the 10 episode first season that I'm excited for a second installment.

Absolutely hilarious! Love the animation style
skimancole18 June 2020
This TV show is absolutely hilarious and I think everybody should give it a shot. I just wish they marketed it a little better as I had no idea about it for the longest time.

Yes, it has crude humor and acts but anyone seriously complaining about a little dark humor is just a little too old or in the wrong genre altogether. I mean it's literally by robot chicken, you're asking for it when you click on it. It's always no "hamilton" or whatever to them. Unfortunately with these types of shows, there's always the "posh" critics that hate these sorts of jokes and plots, that's just part of it nowadays.

The jokes are great (almost no orphan jokes like the guy spewed out below) and the plot is unique as I'm usually stuck with the same old boring shows nowadays and loved the breath of fresh air. I also love the animation style!

It's a show for a younger adult audience but definitely not too young. Don't mind the haters and keep going! This show is addictive. Great work guys and I hope to see season 2 very soon!

One of the best of the adult cartoon fare
brandonssmith220 October 2020
This show is different and thank God that it is. while so many shows attempt to copy the Rick and Morty concept and fail (including Rick and Morty lately) this show plows it's own row.

The voice casting is done very well and you even like the main character - something that seems to be lacking amongst shows like Solar Opposites where the main characters are just hateful.

If you like raunchy comedy but are sick of the Roilland model then give this one a try. IT's a breath of fresh air.

Refreshing Without Reinventing the Wheel
deepfrieddodo22 December 2020
Daft comedy series with some refreshing animation. You follow a relatable character through the absurdity of his kingdom in Medieval times, and it's fairly unique, somewhat similar setting to Disenchantment with a different approach.

It's not gut-bustingly hilarious but it is consistently funny, and definitely something you couldn't watch with an audience you're not 100% comfortable with. The jokes are 'outrageous' in a way, more on the South Park wavelength than the likes of Family Guy. Plus, the entire cast seems to be made up of actors you recognise from somewhere that you can't quite remember. It's worth the watch, and make your own mind up, I know a lot of others will hate it!
