A sliding stop is a maneuver used on a reining horse event. reining, horse and rider are judged on how well they ride a pattern on a light rein (minimal cues), including turnarounds, rundowns (required movement prior to a sliding stop), rollbacks (180 degree change in direction), flying lead (switch in the lead front and hind legs, left or right, in mid-air) changes between fast and slow circles. Some call it "Western Dressage".
One of the mementos John was looking at was a photo of the Orphan Train which stopped at Concordia, Kansas. From 1854 to 1929, over 250,000 orphaned, homeless, or abused children were taken from New York and other large Eastern cities and transported by train to new homes out West. An organization called the Children's Aid Society, helped move these children from the treacherous city influences to rural settings where work, family, and education would mold these children into productive adults. The Orphan train eventually morphed into the "Fresh Air Fund" and other similar programs that provides free summer vacations in the country to New York City children from low-income communities
