Years & Years is dystopian fiction done right... It's a bit on-the-nose but has the same amount of subtlety & relevant bleakness as Black Mirror, balancing things incredibly so as not to cross the line of realism & into the realm of fantasy; Charlie Brooker certainly has a competitor in Russell T. Davies for the most cynical television show of 2019.
Both are uncomfortably familiar depictions of societies not far from our own in the future, exploring the complexities & faults of our species through the perspective of flawed human characters who mirror the viewers: ourselves.
Where the two diverge is from the method of entrances into the narrative - Black Mirror chooses to explore these errors in our progression through the spyglass of technology, whereas Russell has always concentrated on characters. Thus, that's where the noticeable separation begins & that's what sets Years & Years apart, retaining its originality - so as not to feel like an echo chamber of an idea that's already been done.

Warning: Spoilers
After the first episode, I needed some comedy. I put on The Silence of the Lambs for some light relief!
Light relief in Years and Years is having sex with a robot called Keith.
I did wonder after the death of his partner. Whether Russell T Davies would look to the dark side of human nature and in the last 10 minutes it reached meltdown.
This is the Doctor Who episode Turn Left with the dial turned up to 11. Davies takes potshots at a future where intelligent thinking is old hat and anyone can become a leading politician by talking sensationalist garbage. Emma Thompson certainly plays an amalgamation of Katie Hopkins and Nigel Farage.
It starts off in the present, in fact with last minute editing the first episode had this morning's news headlines including the death of Doris Day. We are introduced to the Lyons family in Manchester. So far it could be Queer as Folk. We then fast forward to the future. Things are not that rosy for the Lyons siblings and their families, at the edges there are tensions. Then again there are tensions in a world.
Davies offers sharp writing in this episode, a fast moving state of the nation piece. He does inject this drama with humour but the outlook might be pessimistic.

My TV pick for 2019!
OzHorrorCon13 November 2019
This show will hopefully rock the world. Terrifyingly believable, if you could imagine a recipe made of 'When the wind Blows', Black Mirror, and the most frightening episode of the Nine o'Clock News, then add a side order of your favourite family drama series, a smidgen of Doctor Who, and dollops of black humour on top, this is what's being served up here! Don't wonder about it, just savour it...
I cannot believe my eyes...

So this tv show is from 2019
I'm just discovering it now in february 2024. This show starts in 2019 and talks about the future...so it's no spoilers but what the hell ???
In the show it's 2022 and we see a brief "long live the King" means Queen Elisabeth passed away, sure it was predictable. But 2022 is all about War in Ukraine with Russia...about Ukrainian refugees. 2024 starts with thousands of Ukrainian refugees....did these guys had cristal balls or what ?!
I'm pretty shocked so far...and to be honest I am really afraid or what could come next in this show...
Totally Black mirrored !!!!
