Years & Years is dystopian fiction done right... It's a bit on-the-nose but has the same amount of subtlety & relevant bleakness as Black Mirror, balancing things incredibly so as not to cross the line of realism & into the realm of fantasy; Charlie Brooker certainly has a competitor in Russell T. Davies for the most cynical television show of 2019.
Both are uncomfortably familiar depictions of societies not far from our own in the future, exploring the complexities & faults of our species through the perspective of flawed human characters who mirror the viewers: ourselves.
Where the two diverge is from the method of entrances into the narrative - Black Mirror chooses to explore these errors in our progression through the spyglass of technology, whereas Russell has always concentrated on characters. Thus, that's where the noticeable separation begins & that's what sets Years & Years apart, retaining its originality - so as not to feel like an echo chamber of an idea that's already been done.
