"I will accept the fish to honour the orphan"
hwg1957-102-26570417 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Whatever the historical accuracy this movie is mainly beefy, hairy guys riding horses (sometimes in slow motion) and stopping on the way to mouth underwhelming dialogue about... I'm not sure. It was difficult sometimes to tell the characters apart particularly in the fighting scenes, which are over edited and confusing. It looks good and some of the locations are picturesque but on the whole it was a chore to watch. At the end a sequel was threatened.

I did find the warrior with the wings looked sillier the longer the film went on. Not a wise costume choice.

I am glad you exist

Warning: Spoilers
This is an incomplete story of Vlad the Impaler. It starts in childhood and jumps to the end. It reminds me of the Monty Python skit, "The Death of Mary Queen of Scots." A group called "The Deliler" is sent out from the Ottoman Empire to go against Vlad. Deliler is movie speak for "The Magnificent Seven" complete with swagger, dramatic music, and wings. Yes, one wore large black wings that extended up high. He had to watch out for low branches.

The film is told from the Turkish point of view and Vlad, so Vlad was not a hero who protects his land for the Pope. The characters were poorly developed so the story had no hook. At one time it was almost a love story, but that ailed to take root. The dialogue was a poor attempt to be philosophical.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

Interestingly bad...
erenuyanik16 July 2019
Eventough it is really meaningless on one hand, on the other hand it was quite interesting. What makes this movie unique is about the Tengri belief. Turks believed in single god even before Islam. God was called the god of the skies and all universe as his creation. This movie is nothing even close to todays beliefs and can not be categorized as a propaganda because they are not usual muslims. They do magic, they pray as shamans, they combine Islam with Tengri which may be categorized as being close to Alevi belief in Turkey which todays ruling party hates. So, I think this is a fantasy movie which has no meaning other than showing some blood and some Tengri. And probably if the guys were named as Vikings, the movie may have been more meaningful :).

Poorly Done Anti-History (aka. Agitprop)
mrkevinjmiller28 November 2020
Fanciful complete inversion of history; depicting Ottoman invaders as noble and good, and Romanian defenders of their land as evil. The acting is as stilted as you'll ever see, too bad to even be comical. The pacing, action and plot flow is confusing and choppy, lacking any continuity. Not worth the time of even a free viewing.

This is a bad joke
viper-987838 July 2020
Besides the fact it is fictional and has nothing to do with history, other than perhaps some of the names, it is also absurd and lacks any logic to it. It's like looking to a movie about pigs that have some beautiful butterfly wing and that fly around from flower to flower. This is the amount of logic used in this movie.

Not bad

It is far better for Turkish cinema , this is obvious , so i recommend this film. But if your goal is global , you need to improve yourself. Before watching the film , i was hoping more action/war . Not only action but also the story about "Deliler" troop is weak. It could be better with this huge supply.

turkish propaganda film
Kontroversial25 May 2020
Like "Valley of Wolves" just another turkish trash propaganda film best avoided. What this boils down to is
  • invading genocidal turks good, defending Romanians bad
  • islam good, Christianity evil
What remains is an ottoman FANTASY film that has nothing to do with history or reality.

fantasy history and the truth
tengiz-4912624 November 2018
A great movie about "Deli" the Ottoman cavalry unit. They were brought by the Ottoman Army to fight against the enemy. They were formed in mid 15th century and existed until 1829. Deli means crazy in Turkish which was given to this warriors representing their courage and brave. The movie does great job connecting the history, religion and culture of that time. Its a high quality movie. I recommend everyone to watch it.

Certainly not a Vampire tale.....
Bpaxson0027 October 2020
While looking for Dracula movies (free, because I am a cheap person), I came across this movie. It certainly wasn't what I expected. It is interesting to see a modern movie depicting Vlad Tepes as a bad guy.

I am not up on on the history of between Vlad and the Ottoman Empire, so I can not say how accurate it is, but it does make for an interesting story. If not a bit hard to follow. The cinematography and direction are very good. What really sucks is the the english dubbing. The dialog seems off and the voice actors did a really bad job.

If you are looking for vampires, stay away If you want something on the level of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves with bad dialog, spend some time with this one.

Cannot be placed outside the Turkish community. Historically incorrect, politically dubious and zero entertainment.

Don't mind the authors that knows nothing about history!
Skirbas130 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Please Don't mind the authors that knows nothing about history! It was better than I expected. I thought this movie would be a classic action movie but it wasn't. It was a very good movie that contains shaman culture on the Turks. Nobody that I know have noticed THAT. It must be known that the Turks had this unit on their army which called "DELILER" They were wearing wings on them so because the enemy would frightened them. The lack of the film was unfortunately vlad character they could have made this more efficient. It wasn't fit for the character. But other than that everything was just amazing. Thank you for this wonderful film. I hope the Turkish cinema would do a lot more wonderful movies to watch like this.

Not too shabby
dworldeater24 February 2020
As a devotee to the horror genre, I could not pass on this movie. The Hunt For Vlad The Impaler or Defiler is a Turkish language period action film about 7 warriors who are set out to kill Vlad The Impaler. As a film, this was pretty well made, nicely shot with great period costumes. The battle scenes were done well enough, but needed more gore for maximum impact. There is a nod to The Magnificent Seven or The Seven Samurai as it borrows that a bit for its story structure. The film does drag on a bit at times, but for the most part this is pretty decent for the genre. If you want to take the film seriously I would advise against watching this with the English overdubbing as the job on that was horrible and watch this in its native Turkish language with subtitles instead for maximum authenticity.

Shallow piece of work.
enis-basol10 May 2021
I regret to say that this movie is so superficially made and lacking historical accuracy that I could hardly stand to watch it till the end as a Turk. You can clearly see the abuse of viewers' interest in historical movies. The subject matter and the title arouse interest but content is terrible. A good way to waste your 2 hours.

Imagine the African slaves defending themselves against their American enslavers and somehow the Africans are the bad guys...
Now take that skewed perspective and substitute the African slaves with the defendind Romanians and the Americans with the Ottoman Empire. How exactly is this movie accurate and where is the reality and truth of history I don't know. What is more surprising is that in the age of technology and social media someone thought that a movie like this is suppose to bring sympathy towards Turkey.

Talk about sore losers, sore losers till the end, even 500 years later. At least those that put this movie and this version of history on a pedestal.

There are NO VAMPIRES in this movie!
rippleleena1 September 2019
If you're looking at this movie to see vampires, don't waste your time because there are not any. Plus, it is a completely fictional betrayal of the Ottoman history wherein the Romanian empire is fighting for its own land. In other words, the Romanians really are the good guys and the Turks, being the Invaders, are really the bad guys. So, don't waste your time either way: 1) looking for vampires or 2) looking for true historical accuracy.

oldschoolmech11 October 2020
This Movie shows that Vlad still sparks fear in Ottomans (Neo-Ottomans now) otherwise it wouldn't have needed to be made. it may be an interesting movie for a more the people that needed it, but for everyone else hiding the Facts of History and re-writing it to be about how the Ottomans Fought against the vile Blasphemes against them by Blaspheming against others is Ridiculous.

this movie does show that Vlad Won though. i did like the Locations and Scenery though,

Deliver my review. I have
jeffreyc-3256723 April 2020
Right ho off we go. Deliler, for a foreign country film i really enjoyed it. The dubbed English was okay, so that helped the movie along. The actors played their parts very well and also quite entertained me with the action. The battle scenes were handled with dexterity and looked very realistic. Spent £7 on the dvd so money well spent. So I say a good couple of hours was well spent. Jacey says peace out.

Cheap Neo-Ottomanism
seth201217 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It is a well known fact that the Ottomans invented C4...

I just watched the movie. The brigade known as deliler were well known fighters that played roles in the conquest if Istanbul(Constantinople if you're picky) and Ottoman-Persian wars. Although they most likely did not wear wings on their backs but feathers on their helmets and shields, guess Hussars seemmed more visually attractive so the director put wings on the leader but history is not just bent a little bit in this movie to fit to a well sketched out plot but put warped into something unrecognizable... Turks using C4s to blow up a cave, blowing haystacks, and Vlad creating a bio weapon... Bending history is something but using remote controlled explosives in 15th century is a travestite...

The problem with Turkish cinema especially concerning the movies with heroic themes is that the directors can never tell a thousand stories with visuals but rely on pointless motivational talks that screw up the pacing and there's plenty of it here. Pointlessly talking men trying to pump up each other, pointlessly screaming men with no purpose, the movie is a potpourri of all that.

And the last battle scene, you watch a few men running into an army is not something we haven't seen before. Men achieving the impossible in a battlefield is a cornerstone for these kind of movies but haystacks blowing up in the fore and backgrounds? Seriously? If the director could come with only that solution to create the battle atmosphere for a 15TH CENTURY MOVIE that is a disappointment in the lightest way of saying it.

It seems to be movie that takes itself serious and tries to boost Neo-Ottoman ism and Turkish nationalism but it is something not to be taken serious by the viewer otherwise it is a disappointment and a waste of time...

NOT a Vampire Flick but also Not Too Shabby
talkingfeathers10 March 2022
If you're looking for a vampire flick, you're in the wrong spot. This is more of a historical account of the "special forces" the Sultan sent to take out Vlad the Impaler. I use the term historical loosely. Did this group of warriors exist, yes, but the historical accuracy of how everything happened, good vs. Bad, is a little off-kilter and heavily biased towards this being from the Turkish point of view. I really enjoyed that it was from the point of the old beliefs as well, not what modern cultures believe.

Don't get me wrong though, it was definitely entertaining, the cinematography was very nicely done, the soundtrack was fantastic, the costuming fantastic, and the mostly short battle scenes were well done. Now, if they could just do something about the voice-over actors. You can see the fantastic acting, but the voice-over does it no justice. If you can find this with English subtitles, then watch it in Turkish... SO much better.

Pathetic
TigersLair12 March 2021
Over 2 hours of big fat and boring historical lies. Imagine "300" reversed with the Persian invaders portrayed as the heroes and the Spartans as the ugly villains. Dracula (played by a Turkish actor of course), looks like a bad parody of the Joker from Batman, grimacing and grinning all the time in an extremely irritating way. Interesting to note though, that someone in Turkey feels the need to sully Vlad's figure even after centuries.
