Anna Sawai
Anna Sawai joins the heist for Amazon MGM’s How to Rob a Bank from director David Leitch
Anna Sawai
Anna Sawai is coming off of her Emmy win for Shōgun and continuing to ride her soaring star. The actress will be returning for monster mashing in the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters for Apple TV+ and says that the upcoming episodes will be a huge journey for the characters. She stated a couple months ago, “I don’t know if I’m allowed to tease anything at this point, but I can say we go on a huge journey. We’ll go in different directions, we lose some people, we find some people… I think that’s kind of it. But it’s very exciting.“

Deadline is now reporting that Sawai is set to star in How to Rob a Bank from Amazon MGM Studios. The movie will be helmed by David Leitch, director of Deadpool 2, Bullet Train and The Fall Guy. How to Rob a Bank...

The Fall Guy Director David Leitch Sets 87North Action Movie Fight At Universal
Image
It's been a fortnight now since we got official word that the Academy are set to finally recognise the stunt community at the 2028 Oscars with a new award for Stunt Design. Fast forward to now, and Deadline is reporting that 87North filmmaker David Leitch, whose 2024 ode to stuntmen The Fall Guy may well have given the Academy the final push it needed to get in on the action, er, action, has set a new veritable stuntapalooza called Fight at Universal.

Spawned from a spec script by Tales From The Loop and Legion scribe Nathaniel Halpern, Fight's plot details and shooting/release plans are being kept under wraps for the time being. But given Leitch, 87North, and Leitch's longtime producer Kelly McCormick's involvement in the project — as well as the movie's blunt call to action title — it would be safe to assume that we're not in for a tearjerking melodrama with this one.

David Leitch to direct Nathaniel Halpern’s spec script for Fight at Universal
Image
Genuine Question: Has anyone ever seen David Leitch sleep? I ask because the John Wick and Bullet Train filmmaker is attached to more projects than I can track. Whether he’s directing, producing, consulting, coordinating, or acting, he’s got his hands in a lot of Hollywood cookie jars, and his latest project is Fight, a mysterious feature based on a spec script from Legion and Tales From the Loop writer Nathaniel Halpern. Fight is getting set up at Universal and 87North, with David Leitch directing.

Plot details for Fight remain a mystery, but knowing Leitch’s 87North is involved is enough to tell us the project is another pulse-pounding roller coaster ride of spectacle and coordinated violence. Kelly McCormick, who produced The Fall Guy, Bullet Train, and Nobody for 87North, will join the team to sweeten the pot. John Schoenfelder and Russell Ackerman produce, with Jay Schuminsky as an executive producer through NeoText.

Universal Lands Hot Nathaniel Halpern Spec ‘Fight’ From 87North With David Leitch Directing
Image
Exclusive: Universal Pictures and 87North are continuing to build on their strong relationship as sources tell Deadline the studio has landed Fight from the company, with David Leitch attached to direct from a spec script written by Nathaniel Halpern.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but given Leitch and 87North’s involvement, expect high-octane thrills with over-the-top action pieces.

Kelly McCormick and Leitch, producers of the action films The Fall Guy, Bullet Train and Nobody, will produce Fight via 87North’s first look-deal with Universal. John Schoenfelder and Russell Ackerman will produce, and Jay Schuminsky will executive produce for NeoText.

EVP Production Development Jay Polidoro and Director of Development Tony Ducret will oversee the project for the studio.

87North and Universal previous collaborations include Hobbs & Shaw and Fall Guy, which Leitch directed, as well as Nobody and Love Hurts. Universal will release 87North’s next film with the studio,...

10 Best Movies To Watch Instead Of The Electric State
Image
"The Electric State" has generated nothing but trouble for Netflix.

The streamer spent a whopping $320 million on the film –- which boasts the expensive but wasted talents of Chris Pratt, Millie Bobby Brown, Stanley Tucci, and the blockbuster titans Joe and Anthony Russo –- only for it to debut as an almost immediate viewership flop on Netflix. This was no doubt due to the poor reviews it received upon release (sharing little in common with its lauded source material), as even the platform's own subscribers had already seemingly passed on it in favor of a little-known natural disaster documentary.

But if tornadoes aren't your thing -– and you're not looking to get involved with an overlooked sci-fi series like "Tales from the Loop" –- we've found loads of films currently available to stream or rent online that offer more compelling stories, more impressive visuals, and more human performances than "The Electric State" has to offer.

Is ‘The Electric State’ Based on a Book?
Image
Three years after their last feature film, “The Gray Man,” premiered on Netflix and one year before they make their return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directors Anthony and Joe Russo are back. Their latest offering, “The Electric State,” is a sci-fi blockbuster with a hefty price tag. The film, which continues the Russos’ ongoing creative partnership with Netflix, has a reported budget of $320 million — making it one of the most expensive movies ever made.

Only films based on pre-existing pieces of intellectual property typically get that kind of financial support in Hollywood these days. Is “The Electric State” based on a book, though? Here is what you should know about the new, expensive Netflix film’s origins.

Is “The Electric State” based on a book?

Yes! “The Electric State” is not, however, based on a traditional book. It is, instead, loosely based on a 2018 illustrated novel by acclaimed Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag.

The Electric State Book Is Completely Different (And Way Better) Than The Netflix Movie
Image
Spoilers for "The Electric State" to follow.

There are great film adaptations, like Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and there are bad film adaptations, like Tim Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Then there's 50 feet of crap (as Brad Pitt puts it in "Moneyball"), and then there's "The Electric State." Netflix's allegedly $320 million Russo Brothers extravaganza is a complete disaster from start to finish, filled with unnecessary cameos, embarrassing screenwriting, and set pieces that beg the question: What happened to all that money?

Under normal circumstances, a movie like this would just go down as a simple misfire, and that would be that. But it's even more upsetting because the book on which it's based, Simon Stålenhag's "The Electric State," is incredible. It's also still pretty niche despite Stålenhag's work having become a bit more mainstream over the last several years. That means that for many,...

Watch This Overlooked Sci-Fi Series Instead Of Netflix's The Electric State
Image
Netflix's "The Electric State" isn't very good. By most metrics, it's a complete disaster — a movie so expensive and so devoid of purpose that it honestly defies logic. That's especially true if you've read the book it's based on by Swedish writer and artist Simon Stålenhag.

Stålenhag's books each center on different sci-fi ideas, but the format generally stays the same. They're big books filled with gorgeous digital art of worlds very like our own, but also different. These images are accompanied by one manner or another of prose, telling a linear story or at the very least adding context to the scenes being shown. Where "The Electric State" shows an American landscape devastated by drone warfare and VR addiction, "Tales from the Loop" and "Things from the Flood," Stålenhag's two prior books, follow a Swedish town and the mysterious scientific research facility it holds, as well as the...

The Electric State
Image
In 2018, Simon Stålenhag released The Electric State, a “narrative art” sci-fi book which depicted, with darkly understated beauty, a retro-futurist sci-fi vision of America, a strange land traversed by a teenage girl and a cute, yellow-headed robot pal. Unlike another Stålenhag adaptation, Tales From The Loop, made into a similarly understated TV series in 2020, this feature-length take on The Electric State borrows the aesthetics but not the tone of its original text, evolving from a haunting dystopia to quippy action adventure.

Quippy action adventures, of course, are the modus operandi of the Russo brothers, the filmmaking siblings currently in their inter-Marvel era (they return to assembling Avengers imminently). They direct this with the confidence born of the second-biggest film of all time, even if the script from their regular scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely needed a bit of a polish.

A breathless opening montage brings us up to speed.

Y2K (2024)
A24’s apocalyptic comedy Y2K gets a digital release next week
Y2K (2024)
A24 delivered the “disaster comedy of the millennium” when their film Y2K (you can read our review at This Link) reached theatres on December 6th – but not a lot of movie-goers turned out to see it. The movie has only made $4 million at the domestic box office. Maybe it will be better luck when viewers have the option to watch the movie in the comfort of their own homes… and that option is arriving very soon. Next week, in fact. Y2K is set to receive a digital release on December 24th and is available for pre-order on Apple TV and Amazon.

The feature directorial debut of Saturday Night Live veteran Kyle Mooney, who also crafted the screenplay with Evan Winter, Y2K has the following official logline: On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Years Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy.

The Beauty: Rebecca Hall joins Ryan Murphy FX series based on Image Comics series
Image
Back in September, it was announced that Evan Peters (Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Anthony Ramos (Twisters), Ashton Kutcher (That ’70s Show), and Jeremy Pope (Hollywood) are on board to star in The Beauty, the latest show that American Horror Story and Monster co-creator Ryan Murphy has in the works at FX. Now, Variety has broken the news that Rebecca Hall of Godzilla x Kong: New Empire has also joined the cast.

Filming on The Beauty is already underway. FX has given the show an 11 episode order. While the series is based on the Image Comics series of the same name by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley, plot and character details are being kept under wraps. So for now, we can only go by the description of the comic book series to get an idea of what the show is going to be like: Modern society is obsessed with outward beauty.

Rebecca Hall has joined the cast of FX’s The Beauty, Ryan Murphy’s latest drama series under his Disney deal, Deadline has confirmed. She joins previously cast Evan Peters, Anthony Ramos, Jeremy Pope and Ashton Kutcher.

Co-created, written and exec produced by Murphy and Matt Hodgson, The Beauty is based on the comic books by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley. Per usual for a Ryan Murphy project, no official details about the premise and the characters are provided.

The 2016 graphic novel The Beauty is about an Std that makes those affected beautiful. But the disease, dubbed “the Beauty,” eventually kills its hosts as part of a suspected sinister government plot. The main characters in the comics are detectives Drew Foster and Kara Vaughn, partners on beauty crime cases who have to find their way past corrupt politicians, vengeful federal agents, and a terrifying mercenary out to collect the price on their heads.

Daniel Zolghadri in Talks to Star in ‘The Temple’ — A Sci-Fi Horror Thriller About a Millionaire’s Quest for Ghosts
Image
Daniel Zolghadri is best known for his roles in independent films and television. He started gaining attention for his role in the movie ‘Eighth Grade’ (2018) and later starred in ‘Funny Pages’ (2022), where he played a quirky aspiring cartoonist.

For our readers, however, the actor is recognizable for his role in ‘American Horror Story,’ and Prime Video’s ‘Tales from the Loop.’

Now according to Deadline, the actor will star in a new horror movie with an interesting premise. Zolghadri is apparently negotiating for the lead role in The Temple, a sci-fi horror movie by Canadian writer-director team Yonah Lewis and Calvin Thomas.

‘The Temple’ – Daniel Zolghadri in Talks to Star in Sci-fi Horror Film About Ghost-Seeking Millionaire
Daniel Zolghadri
Actor Daniel Zolghadri, star of upcoming disaster comedy Y2K and American Horror Stories guest star, is currently negotiating for the lead role in sci-fi horror movie The Temple, Deadline reports today.

Temple hails from the Canadian writing and directing duo Yonah Lewis and Calvin Thomas.

The sci-fi horror film follows “an orphaned millionaire (Zolghadri) dedicates his life and considerable fortune to finding the ghosts of his parents with the help of a skeptical radiation scientist.”

There’s not much to go on here, but what little there is intrigues. A ghost-seeking millionaire? A radiation scientist? It sets up the potential for an interesting cross between science and the supernatural.

Zolghadri also recently appeared in Prime Video’s Tales from the Loop and A24’s Funny Pages.

Katie Bird Nolan and Lindsay Tapscott will produce for their Babe Nation Films, alongside the writer-director duo’s Lisa Pictures. Production is gearing up to begin soon,...

The Sticky Trailer and Key Art Revealed
Image
Prime Video today released the official trailer and key art for The Sticky, a fast-paced, dark comedy series from Blumhouse Television, inspired by a real-life heist that made global headlines in 2012, which saw more than $18 million worth of maple syrup stolen from Quebec’s national reserves.

From showrunners Brian Donovan and Ed Herro, The Sticky combines moments of culture-clash hilarity, edge-of-the-seat excitement, and heartbreaking drama. All six episodes premiere on Good December 6 exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories around the world.

The Sticky follows Ruth Landry (three-time Emmy Award winner Margo Martindale), a tough, middle-aged maple syrup farmer who turns to crime when the bureaucratic authorities threaten to take away everything she loves.

She teams up with the hot-tempered Bostonian mobster (Chris Diamantopoulos) and a mild-mannered French-Canadian security guard (Guillaume Cyr) to carry out a multi-million-dollar heist on Quebec’s maple syrup surplus.

In the deliciously devious trailer,...

Image
“The Electric State” is alive.

The new sci-fi adventure, from Anthony and Joe Russo (the directors of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame”), stars Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt — and you can get a first look at the wild, robot-filled world in the brand-new trailer out Thursday. Watch it below.

We Now Have A Good Look At The Electric State Movie, And….Whoa
Simon Stålenhag
We’ve written several pieces about the tabletop game Free League is developing based around Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 picture book The Electric State. Each time, we’ve mentioned offhandedly that someone was working on a Hollywood adaption, but since we didn’t know much about that, we kept it brief. In any event, we didn’t expect much because someone already adapted Tales From The Loop, Stålenhag’s other book, for Amazon Prime and nobody noticed. That show barely existed. But The Electric State, um…well. The first image from the movie was released through Vanity Fair today and….it’s gonna be hard for people Not to notice this one. It’s an image of Millie Bobby Brown surrounded by giant mascot robots, each taking a defensive stance while holding some kind of exotic weapon. The Electric State was an overall mellow book about an alternate apocalyptic 1990s where...

‘The Electric State’ Ttrpg Adaptation Coming October 1 [Trailer]
Historias del bucle (2020)

The standalone book contains all the tools you need to play and create short to mid-length campaigns in a society on the brink of apocalypse.

‘The Listeners’ Review: Rebecca Hall Is Riveting In Janicza Bravo’s Excellent Adaptation
Image
When discussing the story of “The Listeners,” both the novel by Jordan Tannahill and now the BBC Studios series from Janicza Bravo, the emphasis must be placed on the emotional rather than the literal. Yes, the premise centers on a woman who begins hearing a humming sound that nobody else can, but it’s also about the way isolation can create the conditions for otherwise ordinary people to become vulnerable to finding answers in dark places. Some completely fall down a rabbit hole of conspiracies, leaving those who loved them wondering what even happened to the person they thought they knew. For all the ways we believe ourselves to be fully rational and incapable of falling prey to this, “The Listeners” calls this into question in unsettling fashion.

These thorny yet critical ideas are expressed through the sharp eye of Bravo who, just as she did in the underrated “Lemon” and the brilliant “Zola,...

Rebecca Hall On Getting Into Character For ‘The Listeners’ & Why The BBC Series Is A “Four-Hour Movie”
Image
Exclusive: Rebecca Hall has revealed how she got into the character of a woman who hears a constant, low humming sound in BBC series The Listeners.

Adapted from the Jordan Tannahill novel, Hall plays English teacher Claire, tormented by the sound and desperate to make it stop.

Speaking to Deadline on the eve of TIFF, where it is world premiering, Hall said she developed a trick to help her get into character.

“What was helpful was we were shooting on film,” said the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire star. “Digital is silent but with film you can hear the sound of the whir. Sooner or later I latched onto that as my hum. It was comfortable and helped me be where I needed to be.”

After a while, Hall said “it became the thing of the character, I knew it was there and it was a sort of companion.

Ti West Loved The Homesman So Much He Wrote an Essay About It
Image
Ti West began his career as an independent filmmaker in the early 2000s, slowly climbing the industry ranks to become more mainstream. Although firmly steeped in the low-budget horror genre early in his career, West has graduated to bigger-budget commercial projects, including cable TV shows The Exorcist, The Resident, and most recently, the X trilogy. While steeped in the horror genre, the most off-brand movie West has made thus far in his career is the 2016 western In A Valley of Violence, starring Ethan Hawke and John Travolta.

Although In A Valley of Violence is inspired by several movie westerns, in 2014, West professed his undying admiration for a little-known western called The Homesman, directed by and starring Tommy Lee Jones. To trace the dramatic roots of In a Valley of Violence, it's worth exploring what drew West to The Homesman, why he feels it's such a great must-see movie, and perhaps most importantly,...

Jodie Foster Says Directors ‘Don’t Listen to Me’ Sometimes and ‘I’ll Work on a Movie Where I Have to Do 120 Takes’ and Respond: ‘Alright, Bye’
Image
Jodie Foster recently chatted with “The Bikeriders” star Jodie Comer for Interview magazine and got honest about her relationship to acting. The two-time Oscar winner for best actress admitted that she’s “never fell in love with the acting part” of her career and the “technical sides of filmmaking” have always interested her more.

“I’ve always made movies by myself, where it was just about my character, and I didn’t have to deal with the other actors,” Foster said. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to understand that was selfish of me, jealously guarding something that I didn’t want to share. Now I’m learning to enter in and say, ‘How are we together and dynamic?’ Instead of it all being about me. It has been so interesting, because now I meet all these actors that do everything differently.”

Jodie Foster Says She Would Leave a Set If Ever Asked to Do ‘120 Takes’
Image
Even though Jodie Foster worked with multi-take director David Fincher on “Panic Room,” that doesn’t mean she necessarily enjoys that kind of process. Speaking with Jodie Comer for Interview magazine, Foster admitted that she tends not to get too in her own head about acting and, at one point in her career, would even insulate herself from her co-stars.

“I’ve always made movies by myself, where it was just about my character, and I didn’t have to deal with the other actors,” Foster said. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to understand that was selfish of me, jealously guarding something that I didn’t want to share. Jodie Foster Spirals Into The Icy Heart Of Darkness In The True Detective Season 4 Trailer
Image
Trust no one! "True Detective: Night Country" is just around the corner. The fourth season in HBO's anthology series, created and executive-produced by Nic Pizzolatto, is coming to the small screen in January, and there are plenty of reasons to be excited. I could spend this entire piece focusing only on one: the star casting of Jodie Foster. Foster is an absolute legend, a versatile powder keg of performance power who has taken some wild career swings as of late -- directing episodes of "Black Mirror" and "Tales From the Loop," executive producing and appearing in a documentary about pioneering filmmaker Alice Guy-Blaché, and leading the ensemble of the incisively political 2021 film "The Mauritanian."

In "True Detective," as we know from the previous trailer, Foster will play Detective Liz Danvers, who, alongside partner Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis), is investigating a particularly gruesome and bizarre crime. Per that trailer: "We've got...

Jodie Foster Candidly Shares Her Opinion on Superhero Movies: "Hopefully People Will be Sick of It Soon.”
Image
Jodie Foster believes that superhero movies have lasted a little too long and hopes people will soon be sick of them. While she thinks some superhero movies are entertaining, they don't change her life and she doesn't consider them life-changing. Foster encourages young actors to look beyond franchise work and have faith in their own talent, as there will always be work for them outside of superhero movies.

It seems everyone in the film industry has something to say about superhero movies these days. From Martin Scorsese calling them a danger to our culture, to John Woo claiming he doesn’t watch them because he prefers “real cinema," the debate over superhero fatigue continues to rage on. Now Academy Award-winning actress, Jodie Foster, has added her voice to the discussion.

Speaking with Elle, the two-time Oscar winner who first rose to prominence in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver in 1976 didn...

‘God’s Country’ – Maria Bakalova to Encounter Biblical Terror in Matt Reeves-produced Genre Pic
Egor Abramenko
Director Egor Abramenko gave a new twist to the creature feature in 2020’s Sputnik. He’s now set to take on biblical terror in God’s Country, marking his American directorial debut. Deadline reports that Bodies Bodies Bodies star Maria Bakalova will lead the Matt Reeves-produced genre pic.

God’s Country will follow “a young woman who travels to Kentucky to meet her fiancé, subsequently uncovering something sinister beyond comprehension, as her American dream curdles into a nightmare of biblical proportions.”

Will Soodik (“Westworld”) wrote the script.

Bakalova takes over for Melissa Barrera, who reportedly exited the role due scheduling conflicts. God’s Country is set to go into production in Romania under a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement in March. Barrera was announced to lead the project in February earlier this year, where her character was described as a Salvadoran woman.

What’s most fascinating about this is that Reeves told Deadline at the time,...

Hear a Track Off the Philip Glass and Paul Leonard-Morgan Score for Errol Morris’ John le Carré Doc
Image
Philip Glass has been composing soundscapes of ambient intrigue for documentary filmmaker Errol Morris for decades, from the groundbreaking true-crime doc “The Thin Blue Line” to the Robert McNamara portrait “The Fog of War.” Now, the three-time Oscar-nominated modernist composer and co-writer Paul Leonard-Morgan have crafted the original score for Morris’ John le Carré documentary “The Pigeon Tunnel,” the Apple TV+ documentary that opens Friday, October 20. Also premiering that day will be the film’s original soundtrack from Platoon, and IndieWire shares an exclusive track off the album below.

“It is our pleasure to share ‘The Pigeon Tunnel’ soundtrack,” said Philip Glass and Paul Leonard-Morgan, adding that “the orchestral journey this score took us on, combing the cimbalom of ’60s espionage soundtracks with symphonic orchestral work, led to 80 minutes of score, almost the entirety of the film.”

The film centers on four days of interviews with le Carré in 2019 that...

The Creator Review: A Visually Stunning Yet Emotionally Stunted Sci-Fi Epic
Image
Gareth Edwards entered the film scene with "Monsters," a fantastic sci-fi movie that used its limited budget to tell a thrilling, suspenseful story. After that, however, Edwards went the route of many an indie director in the 2010s and was tapped to direct two huge blockbuster franchises, "Godzilla" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." While both had their merits ("Rogue One" even has some of the best moments in all of "Star Wars"), there is definitely something refreshing and exciting about Edwards finally overcoming his blockbuster fatigue and going back to his roots with "The Creator," a visually stunning piece of science fiction with big ideas and big performances.

In some ways, this is Gareth Edwards doing his version of "Star Wars: A New Hope" — a story of rebellion complete with a magical child, an evil battle station with a weapon that can completely obliterate planets, and a band...

Best Sci-Fi Anthology TV Shows Of All Time
Image
Television has never been more daring and genre-friendly, but this is particularly true when it comes to science fiction. Sci-fi is in the middle of a Renaissance where streaming services finally have the budget to indulge in expansive sci-fi series that don’t have to sell themselves short. Additionally, anthology storytelling has become a popular formula for modern television that allows a powerful theme to link together otherwise disparate episodes or seasons of content.

Related: 10 Best Anthology Series, Ranked

Science fiction works well with anthology series because episodes can get in and get out with compelling ideas that don’t need to be able to sustain multiple seasons of storytelling. Sci-fi and anthology fans have many appealing options, but some sci-fi anthology series stand out more than the rest.

Blumhouse's Soft & Quiet: Cast & Character Guide
Image
This article contains discussions/references to murder and racism

The Blumhouse-produced horror thriller Soft & Quiet involves a limited cast for its claustrophobic settings. The choice of relying on only a handful of main cast members makes sense given how the entirety of the movie takes place within a matter of a few hours. Building upon horror movies with social commentary, like Blumhouse’s Get Out, Soft & Quiet seems to show a women's get-together. However, things soon take a dark turn when these women reveal their white supremacist views, which set off a chain of chaotically violent events. Helmed by Beth de Araújo in her directorial debut, Soft & Quiet is a haunting insight into the race relations plaguing modern America.

While the Soft & Quiet cast might not include mainstream names, each of the main actors chillingly showcase their dramatic prowess. Ranking among the best horror movies filmed in one continuous shot,...

‘The Penguin’ teaser: Max streaming service showcases Colin Farrell in series spinoff of ‘The Batman’ [Watch]
Image
Colin Farrell was virtually unrecognizable as Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, in 2022’s gritty “The Batman” film from Matt Reeves. Now they’re bringing the character to the new Max streaming service for an eight-episode series in 2024. An in-production preview of the series was unveiled on April 12 exclusively during Warner Bros. Discovery’s unveiling of the Max streaming service on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles. Watch it above.

In “The Batman,” Farrell played the Penguin as a lieutenant for crime boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) who ran Falcone’s Iceberg Lounge. Spoiler alert: Falcone doesn’t make it to the end of the film, perhaps opening the door for other criminals to take control of Gotham City’s underworld. The film earned a trio of Oscar nominations: Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, the last of which was largely in recognition of the extensive prosthetics worn by Farrell.
